Center Grove Presbyterian Church holds annual Fall Festival
with its homegrown atmosphere and free family fun

Carnival games, bounce houses, food, prizes and candy –all free to the community at
Center Grove Presbyterian Church’s Fall Festival on Oct. 31, 6-8 p.m. The annual event is
expected to provide entertainment for more
than 500 community members, though the
more the merrier, says organizers and CoFamily Ministry Directors Amy Hyman and
Laura Helvie.
“We love the connection it brings us to the
community,” Hyman says. “It’s a safe alternative to trick or treating at houses. It’s just a fun
fall family time. It’s our biggest event. There’s
just so much to do. You almost can’t get it all
done in two hours.”
Hyman and Helvie helped begin the annual event in 2000 when Hyman worked in the
children’s ministry and Helvie volunteered.
The event began with handmade games from
church members. Many of the games are still
handmade, and some of the original games
are still being used. Since the beginning, the
event has added bounce houses, costume
contests, concessions, a hay ride around the
church property, photo booth and has 42 different games including putt-putt, darts, football, ring tosses and more.
“We’ve tried many different things through
the years,” Helvie says. “That’s kind of its atmosphere, too; it’s home grown.”

selected to join UE's Leadership Academy,
a student organization dedicated to
developing leadership abilities in students.
Simpson is a major in Nursing. The University
of Evansville Leadership Academy (UELA)
is a two-year program that seeks to enrich
the student organizations on campus by
developing, training and nurturing student
leaders. Members of this organization
develop leadership skills and techniques
through activities such as lectures, leadership
workshops, and community service projects.

Evan Swhear of the Southside of Indianapolis
was one of 13 students who received the 2013
Provost's Student Academic Achievement
The Southside Times
Award for their outstanding contributions to
Miami University's intellectual environment.
Swhear is a marketing and supply chain and
operations management double major and
rhetoric/writing minor. The recipients were
selected based on nominations from Miami
faculty. Students were awarded a $1,000
scholarship and certificate of recognition
during a ceremony in September. Swhears
contributions to Miami include being
president of Miami's Forensics Society,
receiving several top honors in forensics
competitions and being a member of
the university honors program. He is also
director of recruitment for Alpha Kappa Psi, a

things. That’s why I like to do
maintenance around the city
of Southport. Growing up I’d always help friends, neighbors do
yard work, things like that. I always have to be out being constructive, doing something.
• Halloween is my biggest hobby. You could call me in January, say you need the hearse

going to St. Louis, Missouri in
March to the national Halloween show, where everyone is
dressed in costume with everything imaginable. I’ll take a couple of friends with me.

can’t still be fun. Bettcher owns a hearse that
was used at Fright Manor. It was suggested
to him to drive it around, passing out candy.
Thinking that was a great idea, he has done
just that for five years, dressing up as Captain Spaulding which was inspired by the film,
House of 1000 Corpses.
“That’s kind of my mobile haunt and I have
fun doing that now,” Bettcher said. “Everybody seems to enjoy it. That’s my whole goal,
to see people smile and I enjoy that.”
Southport will introduce two new events to
the city this year. Mayor Jesse Testruth said he
wants to bring the old holiday traditions back
to the city.
“A city that is a family oriented city, should
have family events,” Testruth said. “It’s working out like I was hoping it would. If you let
the people use their heads, do what they want,
they come up with amazing ideas.”
On Oct. 25, the city and University of Indianapolis students have partnered for a Southport Road Zombie Haunt, 6-9 p.m. on Southport Road from Madison to McFarland Road.
Interested participants can still sign up at the
Community Center, 6901 Derbyshire
Rd. through the day of the event. The
Halloween Party will take place Oct.
26, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Community Center, with live music, a photo
shoot with Captain Spaulding, a costume contest, games, food and a parade starting at 6 p.m. with Captain
Spaulding as Grand Marshal and the
Mayor of Lawrence riding with him.
On Halloween, Bettcher will pass
out 500 treat bags of candy. The bags
are labeled with The City of Southport so families know where they
came from. For those who don’t know who he
is, his hearse will have a sign on the side with
Southport’s name.
“I think it’s great,” Bettcher said. “Maybe it
will bring the community closer and they can
see Halloween can be fun.”

I was so impressed by the Oct. 10 edition of The
Southside Times, in particular the Johnny Sons’
article and his efforts concerning Autism and the
benefits of archery. My 16 year-old son, diagnosed

Shame on vandals
We’ve seen our Southside neighborhoods,
especially within the last couple of years, make
a large push to beautify the neighborhood – a
necessary thing to bring in new businesses,
residents and to keep existing residents happy. Unfortunately, even in the nicest of areas,
there are still those who counteract this endeavor. It was reported Oct. 22 just days after a sign was installed at a Johnson County
nature preserve scheduled to open in November, vandals sprayed paint on it. It’s unclear
exactly when the vandalism occurred, but the
sign was installed last Thursday. Neighbors
noticed the paint and reported it on Sunday
to the Central Indiana Land Trust, which filed
a report with the Johnson County Sheriff ’s department.
The Blossom Hollow Preserve will open
to the public in mid-November and feature a
trail and small gravel parking lot. The property is particularly important as a conservation site because it is part of a large unbroken
hardwood forest block, which is key for migratory birds and forest interior nesting birds.
The preserve is home to three rare species:
the worm-eating warbler, hooded warbler
and Eastern box turtle. Contributions of approximately $500,000 to the Central Indiana
Land Trust made it possible for the land trust
to purchase the property and provide for the
ongoing maintenance so it will forever be protected and conserved.
It’s a shame that vandals attempt to destroy
beauty in a neighborhood before anyone even
gets a chance to enjoy it. We are excited to see
the new preserve after it opens and to enjoy
some more of the beauty the Southside holds.

calendar, page 8) - what a fun and exciting time.
It has been interesting for us Baby Boomers to
witness in recent years just how popular Halloween has become, not only for youngsters
but for adults as well. Drive by local drinking
establishments and you will see specials advertised for the 31st. In fact, adult Halloween
celebrations have become big business. Take a
look at any large retail area and you are sure
to find a place that will help you celebrate Halloween in the most ghoulish fashion. We hope
you and your little ones enjoy Halloween this

Mary May Arbuckle Church, 90, of Indianapolis, died Oct. 16, 2013. The daughter of Ezra
E. Sr. and Verna Brown Arbuckle, Mary was
born Aug. 22, 1923 in Indianapolis. Mary was
a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church.
Over the years, she was an assistant manager
in the restaurant industry; drove a school bus
and worked as a custodian for RISE Learning
Center. Mary is survived by her husband, Joseph W. Church of Indianapolis; son, Steven
R. (Don Cross) Church of New Albany and
Kathy J. (William) O’Connor of Indianapolis;
a brother, Kenneth Arbuckle of Arizona; two
grandchildren. Besides her parents, Mary was
preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. No services are scheduled. Forest Lawn

Angela M Hartman, 90, died Wednesday, Oct.
16. She was born in Indianapolis on Dec. 24,
1922 to Joseph and Josephine LaPinta. She
was a loving mother and wife. She is preceded
in death by her husband, Wilfred Hartman.
She is the mother of Wilfred (Brenda) Hartman, Joe (Sue) Hartman, & Tony (Terri) Hartman. She had six grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren. Visitation was held Oct. 19 at

Michael J. Hayes
Michael J. Hayes, 82, died on Oct. 18, 2013. He
was born on Nov. 13, 1930 to James and Gertrude Cain Hayes. On May 5, 1956 he married
Margaret McLafferty Hayes, who preceded
him in death. They were married for 54 years
and had eight children. Besides his wife, Mike
was preceded in death by his parents; and a
daughter, Colleen Hayes. Survivors include
his children, Shannon Hayes, Kelly (Shelly)
Hayes, Casey Hayes, Brian (Carol) Hayes, Michael D. (Theresa) Hayes, Erin Ellis and Shawn
(Ed) Gann; and eight grandchildren, Kyle, Alison and Kelsey Gann, Meghan and McKenzie

Hayes. Mike was a Korean War veteran with
the United States Marine Corps Recon unit.
After the Marine Corps, Mike joined the Indianapolis Fire Department where he was

Mike enjoyed playing the bagpipes. He was a
member of the Indianapolis 500 Gordon Pipers until he started his own bagpipe band,

Arnold Ernest Lynn, 78, of Franklin, died Oct.

Donald L. Steffen, 88, of Indianapolis, died
Oct. 18, 2013. He was born Sept. 23, 1925 in
Indianapolis to the late Lynn Thomas and
Eugenia (Adams) Steffen. Donald was in the
10th Mountain Division of the Army having
served in WWII. He was a member of the 10th
Mountain Division Midwest Chapter and the
Brookhaven Euchre Club. He retired after 30
years from Daum Trucking. He is survived by
his daughters, Anita (Jim) Carter, Janet (Tom)
Jackson, and Ethelyn (Herbert) Schlueter;
24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren;
and three great-great grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his wife, Juanita (Waggoner) Steffen on April 18, 2009; his son, Kenneth Lee Steffen on July 23, 1998; and by two

Donald Lee “Jack” Trinkle
Donald Lee “Jack” Trinkle, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.,
formally of Greenwood, died at the age of 80
on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013. He was born on Nov.
7, 1932 in Patriot, Ind. to Vernon and Hazel
Trinkle. He was married to Nancy Martin for
31 years before her passing. He was formerly
married to Retta Parrott and JoAnn Nipper.
He was a member of the U.S. Air Force from
1951-1955, and a member of the Indiana Reserve for an additional four years. He worked
at Citizens Gas for more than 30 years. He was
an active member of the Masonic Lodge and
Moose Lodge. He is survived by sons Keith
(Karen) Trinkle and Greg Harris; daughters
Mindi (Steve) Jones, Dawn Reynolds and Denise Ransom; grandchildren Chelle Ransom,
Lisa Phillips, Leila Phillips, James Gunter, Randi
Reynolds, Jessica Harris, Kyle Jones and Robin
Jones; and brother Edward Trinkle. He was
preceded in death by brother, Randall; sisters,
Vera Price, Jane Mays and Libby White; and
daughter Robin. Visitation was Oct. 21 at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory,

Center Grove’s Motsenbocker chosen
for All-American Marching Band
The National Association for Music Education has chosen Alex
Motsenbocker, a Center Grove High School senior, for the 2014
U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. Motsenbocker is a bass
drummer with CGHS’ marching band. Motsenbocker is one of 125
students selected from across the nation based on their outstanding musicianship, marching skill, academic standing, leadership
potential and maturity. As part of his selection, he will receive an
all-expenses paid trip to San Antonio where he will participate in

has reached an agreement in principle with
Amtrak and local communities to keep the Hoosier
State passenger rail service operating between
Indianapolis and Chicago. Once agreements

payments will renew the existing service for

Two Haunts in One
The Asylum haunted house and Historic Hannah House partner
for the first time this Halloween season

The Asylum is haunting at a real-life
haunted house this Halloween season, partnering with the Historic
Hannah House for the
first time in the 18 years
since Patrick Greathouse formed The Asylum. At some point, visitors will get chased, have
their phobias tested and
stories to tell after their visit.
“This
is the first year here and it’s
been working out really well
so far,” Greathouse said. “The
(Hannah House) family has
been quite accommodating. The management staff and
their volunteers have been great.
We’ve had people say this is a great
match-up. Our style of haunting
combined with Hannah House. So
we’re hoping to have a good season. We’ve moved from a volunteer staff to a paid position. We
had more applicants than we had
positions.”
The Asylum started out at German Park, moved into Johnson
County and is now in Indianapolis. The walk through the Hannah
House starts at the entrance, moves
upstairs, travels through the basement
and ventures outdoors.
“The thing about a haunted house is
there’s a mystery behind the doors,” Greathouse said. “Haunters and haunted house
owners should be playing on phobias; that’s
our business. The tradition is haunted
houses should be haunted. People want to
come and see a ghost. We went more tradi-
tional old school this year with the haunt.”
Behind the scenes, a group of makeup
artists, 65 actors and building staff and other personnel help run
the event and provide a
thrill for everyone that
comes through. Greathouse says the staff enjoys the haunting just as
much as attendants do,
telling stories at the end
of the night about their
favorite reactions.
“One of my rules is,
if you can’t scare ‘em, make ‘em go wow,”
Greathouse said. “If they don’t go wow,
make ‘em laugh. You’re there to entertain
them. It takes a ton of people’s hard work
and they need to be recognized.”
In addition to the haunted house, The
Asylum donates part of its proceeds to nonprofits. On Oct. 26, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. it will
host Thrill the World Indianapolis, a worldwide simultaneous dance event of Thriller
for a world record. Funds raised will benefit Wild Heart and area programs for domestic violence prevention. Sign up at wildheartassociation.com. All must report one
hour before performance time to be counted. The world record attempt will begin at
4 p.m. sharp. Entrance fee is $5 in advance,
$10 at the door.
As it gets closer to Halloween, Greathouse said attendance has begun to pick up.
He encourages everyone to dress comfortably and be prepared for an “intense” thrill.
“Our job is to scare you,” Greathouse said.
“We are not going to harm you at any time.
It’s like being on a roller coaster. You think
you could fall out, but you won’t. We pay for
a trill and we do the best we can to give it to
them… I am thrilled with this year.”
Brief history of
Hannah House
The story is told that one night, a group of
slaves were cramped in a dark, dirt-floored
cellar, waiting to head for the freedom of
Canada. One of them tipped over an oil
lamp, lighting a fire that trapped them
there, many killed by smoke inhalation
and burns. The dead are buried in
that cellar. Ever since then, the cellar
of the Hannah House is known for
paranormal activity. Read more at

and you could see the candy in the back window piled up through the back glass hatch of
that Pinto. We kept loading it in there. We had
to throw a lot of candy

of the mouth, this defiles a man." ~ Matthew
15:9-11
I remember a little chorus we learned
when we were children
in Sunday School. The
chorus went something like this: "Be careful little feet where you
go. Be careful little feet

I thought then and I still feel that this little
chorus illustrates the doctrine of holiness quite
well. It is impossible to draw from the same
well both sweet water and bitter. Either one is a
child of God or he is not.
There is a trend today (and I read it a lot from
what is sent to me via the internet) to compromise our holiness in our speech. Whether we
are saying what we say in print or by conversa-
tion orally, our language should reflect the holiness of life within. I don't like getting vulgar
emails but there are those who insist on sending them to me anyway. I believe that a Christian's language should be kept clean and undefiled with gutter terms and vulgarities.
Christ told His disciples that those things
that come out of the mouth are the things that
defile a man. More precisely Christ was saying
that those things that
come from a person's
mouth are the things
that the person is defiled with and are identifying markers of such.
He was warning His
disciples to be aware
of and to beware the
words of the Pharisees.
The Pharisees were offended by what Jesus
said. Of course they did.
It specified sin in their
hearts which was betrayed by their speech.
I don't use profanity in print or in verbal communication. I
believe it demeans the
person speaking and relates to the one hearing
that the one speaking has little or no respect
for them.
We need to clean up our language whether it
is being spoken or written. God the Father up

Members of Community Church at Murphy’s
Landing gave a week of their Fall Break
vacation to be missionaries. 12 members of
this Southside church are in LaUnion Ecuador
visiting this small rural village to bring God’s
Word to the people in a vacation Bible school
format as well as personal evangelism. They
will even be shown a Christian themed
movie in the tropical wilderness. On the
trip are Damon Disch, Lynette Disch Wilson,
Bethany Disch Mauser, Shelby Covington, Dan
Matthews, Darla Matthews, Derek Matthews,
Brandon Awrey, Jennifer Awrey, Samantha
Awrey and Tony Linton. This mission trip will
help these members to grow in their faith
by serving others in their environment. The
trip is coordinated by One Mission Society
of Greenwood and it’s “Men for Missions”
outreach program.
On Oct.15, Lutheran High School competed
in the Area Competition of the 28th Annual
Indiana Academic Spell Bowl. Lutheran was
one of the 18 sites across the state to host the
event. Over 6000 Indiana students competed
in the Indiana Academic Spell Bowl. The
schools competing at Lutheran High School
included class 1 schools Greenfield Central,
New Palestine, Mt. Vernon, and Roncalli;
class 2 Beech Grove; class 3 schools Cardinal
Ritter, Park Tudor, and Speedway; and class 4
Lutheran. The Indiana Academic Spell Bowl is
a team concept with no individual winners.
Each round consists of one team member
writing the correct spelling of nine words
while competing against one team member
from each other school. Each word is graded
immediately and an individual scoring
chart maintains a running team score as the
evening progresses. At the Lutheran site,
Greenfield Central, Beech Grove, Park Tudor,
and Lutheran all placed first in their respective
classes. Lutheran High School placed 15th
overall in the state in class 4. Senior Sarah Deitz
received a near perfect score award. Team
members for Lutheran High School include
Kailyn Turner, Ryan Kanning, Nick Arnett,
Sarah Deitz, Benton Turner, Katherine Krupski,
Nina Milivojac, Rachel Lawson, Branden
Adams, Jon Knippenberg, Drew Settlemyre,
Ross Richardson, Blake Sobieralski, Joey
Wilkins, Emily Hopkins, Kyrie Seying, and Jake
Kent. The top teams with the highest scores in
each of the four enrollment classifications will
converge on the Purdue University campus
on Saturday, November 10, 2012, for the
