Hi there from the principal!
As this first week of winter hits us hard with the sudden
cool change we have so many great activities happening in
our school.
Fundraiser at Masters for Ellen Ditton Year 9
Ellen will be touring Canada in the Sports Travel Australian
Tour to compete in the Jack Brow meet and the Trevor
Craven Carnival in June and July. She needed to raise $15
000 to assist with her trip both staff and students united
forces, on a beautiful Sunday a few weeks ago to keep the
masses fed at Masters Heatherbrae. The BBQ raised over
$1500 in just one day, what a fantastic effort. Thank you to
all students and staff who assisted to help Ellen’s trip
become a reality. This was a fabulous example of the
positive culture and support we enjoy at our school.
Working Bee
On Sunday just passed, we held another Working Bee to
continue the improvements being made to our school
environment. Again, it was amazing to see over 40
students, parents, grandparents and staff here on a cold
Sunday morning to weed, plant, paint, mulch gardens and
much more. Our school is really looking good and your
children/our students often comment positively on the
improved environment and how much it is appreciated. A
very special thank you to those who gave their time so
generously last week, to help make our school a better
place.
Water Ski Champion – Sierra Nowlan Year 8
Fortunately this week I learnt of the success experienced
by Sierra Nowlan in Water Skiing. In March Sierra
competed at the NSW Water Ski Titles where she won the
Under 14 girls Slalom and broke the Australian Under 14
girls Slalom record. Over the Easter break, Sierra gained
more success at the Australian Championships where she
won the Australian Under 14 girls Slalom and equalled her
Australian Under 14 girls Slalom record. Sierra has been
selected to train with the Australian Junior Development
Squad for possible selection in the Australian team to
compete at the World Under 17 Championships in the USA
in July. Congratulations Sierra on your success and we
look forward to hearing more great news.

It’s Not Okay To Be Away or Late To School
Later in this newsletter you will find an article written by
Michael Grose from Parenting Ideas. Michael is an author
of 9 parenting books and his parenting columns appear in
newspapers and magazines across Australia and he
regularly appears on television. We will include one of his
articles with each newsletter for your reading interest. We
can all learn from experts such as Michael Grose.
This article addresses the importance of attendance and
as a school, we could not agree more with the content of
this article. The first paragraph contains the most vital
message, “One of the most important things you can
do to ensure your child has a bright future is to make
sure he or she goes to school every day – and gets
there on time.”
School Uniform
We are a proud uniform wearing school with a uniform
endorsed by our P&C. The addition of an everyday polo
has improved the wearing of correct uniform tremendously.
Unfortunately, with the cold weather we have seen a slip in
uniform compliance and have noticed a decline in the
positive culture we have worked so hard to improve.
Wearing our uniform shows pride in our school and helps
us to work together as one. Please assist us by ensuring
your child attends school every day in the correct uniform.
The school has student assistance available for those who
find the cost an issue and we also have a supply of new
and clean uniforms available for those without the correct
uniform for a day or two. Please work with us to maintain
the high standards we have all worked so hard to gain.
Yours in education,
Deb Dibley

Pre-service Teachers
During Weeks 2-5 of this term we have had six Preservice teachers with us working in English, Music,
Science and TAS faculties. They have been
teaching classes under the guidance of our staff and
completing Quality Teaching Rounds to allow them
to reflect on their practice.

TEACHING AND LEARNING
Staff Development Day
The central theme of our Term 2 Staff Development
Day was Aboriginal Education with a focus on
improving outcomes for all students at Hunter River
High School.
The day began with a moving poem from Aunty
Margo and was followed by activities facilitated by
staff trained through the Stronger Smarter Institute.
Staff then revised the 8 Ways of Learning framework
and evaluated their learning and teaching programs
to identify opportunities to include/strengthen this
pedagogy. Many thanks to our staff facilitators for
sharing their knowledge and expertise: Rob D’Elboux;
Tracy Jones; Pete Harget; Kimbalee Hodges; Leo.
Kolmajor; Brooke Roach, Adam Trace; Leza
Wheeler.
Our Library
We are currently in the process of considering ways
in which to make our school library one which
supports 21st Century Learning. Parents and carers
are invited to have input into its redevelopment via
the following link:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3ZWTB7P
Focus on Writing
The team driving this initiative have finalised a
poster that will be placed in classrooms to guide
students in developing strong paragraphs when
writing. There is a scaffold attached to this
newsletter that parents/carers could use with their
children to encourage them to complete their
homework with or to reflect on the learning that took
place during the school day.
If you would like any further information about our
Staff Development Day, Focus on Writing strategies
or our library initiative please contact me.

U14’s Rugby League
Port Stephens Youth Week
Congratulations to our U14's Rugby League boys
who played so well at the beginning of May. They
went through the day undefeated and topped the
gala day. They are now through to the Super 8
Finals which will be held later in the term. We're
very proud of you boys! Thank you for upholding
our values and showing such sportsmanship!
A showcase of the best short films, stories and
photographs created by the Port’s youths capped off
a week celebrating the contributions young people
make in their communities.
Port Stephens Council’s Youth Advisory Panel set
residents aged 12 to 24 a challenge on April 7 – the

Miss Woloschyn
Star Struck 2016
Thank you to Mr Kolmajer for mentoring some of
the activities throughout the day, along with staff
from the Cultural Room and Mr D’Elboux, the GATS
coordinator.
Star Struck 2016 is underway. The 32 Dance
students involved had their first rehearsal at the
Newcastle Basketball Stadium on Monday 16 May.
The dancers learnt their performance to Heal the
World involving three other high schools. This was a
great day with our students performing incredibly
well. We are looking forward to the performance
week in week 8 on the 17 and 18 June.
A huge congratulations goes out
to Stacey Price in Year 10 for
being one of the thirty students
accepted into the Regional Tap
Ensemble.
Music News:
GATS Day 7P
Mrs Carroll
On Tuesday 3 May, students from 7P GATS class
were involved in a Cultural Day, focusing on music
within Aboriginal Culture. The aim of the day was to
enrich the students with Aboriginal Culture through
making and playing instruments, singing and
dancing. Students will then perform for NAIDOC
Week at HRHS. This year the theme is SonglinesThe living narrative of our nation.
The students were given a brief talk from Brooke
Roach about our focus for the day. Some students
were then in the outdoor learning area at the Cultural
Room preparing didgeridoos, clap sticks and emu
callers, whilst other students were learning the vocal
parts and a final group developed a dance for our
performance based on traditional ideas. After lunch
the group came together to perform and share the
knowledge and experiences about the day.
This activity provided an opportunity for students in
the Year 7 GATS class to further develop the
knowledge learnt in class about Aboriginal music
and culture. There will also be an opportunity for 7P
to perform at the school Showcase Night, in Term 3,
and to perform at our partner primary schools for
NAIDOC Week.
Mrs Carroll and Mrs Hungerford
In music this term, our students are busy preparing for
assessment tasks in performance. Since the
introduction of an additional performance class in Year
10 we have noticed significant development with our
musicians and their skill level. Students are also
preparing for the upcoming auditions for our school
Showcase Night to be held on 30 August. Auditions
will be held early in Term 3.
This term we have welcomed Grace Parker, from the
University of Newcastle, for a four week teaching
experience. Grace has shared her skills in
performance and is assisting some of our senior
students with pieces for the HSC.
As part of the transition program with our partner
primary schools, four students from Karuah Public
School are joining the ukulele group. We are looking
forward to this link and providing the students with
new skills in performing. Ukulele group rehearsals
occur in Break 2 each Wednesday. See Mrs
Hungerford if you have any questions. Any new
members are most welcome.
Vocaleague is running again this term under the
direction of Sarah McLennan, the students will
continue to develop their skills singing in harmony and
developing their vocal techniques. There are still
places available if anyone is interested. This term is a

five week program.

CAPA NEWS CONTINUED:
Brass Ensemble
Each Tuesday morning we have a brass specialist
teacher visiting our school to provide a small group of
students with the opportunity to learn how to play brass
and woodwind instruments. These students have been
provided with loan instruments from the school and are
preparing for a performance piece for the Showcase
concert in Term 3. If you are interested in joining this
ensemble please see Mrs Hungerford in the CAPA
staffroom. There is no cost involved with this program.
given a guided tour of the studio and home of
Whiteley. They then spent two hours drawing from a
life model. The experience was amazing as the tutor
helped the students unpack the shape of the figure
with a series of drawing experiences. The range of
works highlighted some talented drawers in Year
11, and the experience was enjoyable. The staff at
the studio were impressed with our art students; the
quality of their work, their energy and willingness to
have a serious attempt at a new experience.
HSC Music Day
On Friday 6 May a number of Year 11 students
attended the HSC Music Day at the Newcastle
Conservatorium of Music. The students attended a
variety of workshops throughout the day, including
composition, musicology and a performance Master
class. This day provided our students with valuable
knowledge and skills to prepare for their HSC next
year.
Visual Arts News
Ms Peters
Wow! What a busy start to the term. We have so
many talented students in our classes who are doing
beautiful work. HSC students have all started their
Body of Works and are busily working on them in
B2. Their concepts and planning have been really
exciting and I am looking forward to seeing them
finished. Year 8 Mandatory hours are all working on
an Aboriginal Art unit. We are investigating local
artist practice. We have found examples of stunning
rock engraving which Year 8 will be looking at, whilst
making an artwork based on this idea. Year 9 art are
getting ready to start the Hunter River Archibald
Prize.
A reminder to all families that art materials are
expensive and your art contributions go straight to
materials. If you need to seek students assistance,
please see Admin 1 staff.
Year 10 Graphic Art
Ms Van Ede
Students in the Year 10 Graphic Art class have
completed their skateboards that they started last
term. Students initially investigated different
skateboard designs and the significance of these.
They were then asked to draw their own design and
transfer this design onto a board.
The results are fantastic! Ms Van Ede would like to
congratulate the students on the quality of the work
produced.
Year 11 Visual Arts Excursion:
In the last week of Term 1 Year 11 Visual Arts
students visited the Brett Whiteley Studio in Surry
Hills for a drawing workshop. The students were

Year 10 Café Fundamentals:
Mrs O’Rourke
A wonderful opening of our Cafe occurred during
week 2. The Year 10 Cafe Fundamentals class,
have been working exceptionally hard on gaining
culinary and front of house skills to run our first cafe
at HRHS. The students and their teacher Ms Green
did an amazing job, the staff who dined in enjoyed
the food and atmosphere of our 'shabby chic' cafe.
The Café is open every day 8 break 1 to staff and
will be open to Year 12 students as well during term
3.
St 5/6 have been very busy this term.
Year 12 CAFS Class:
Our Yr 12 Community and Family Studies class have
been learning about the homeless and other groups
within our society who are disadvantaged. The
students decided to make a small difference and help
the homeless in the Hunter, by putting together a
hygiene package donated by the students. This was
gratefully received by Terry White Chemist at Raymond
Terrace and will be passed onto those in need.
English:
Students are studying Aboriginal Dreaming Stories
and have examined the stories ‘Moonman’ and ‘The
Wagalak Sisters’. They have visited Brooke in the
Cultural room and have also practiced using some
Gathang language in their writing.
HSIE:
Currently students are examining some of the
geographical and cultural features of Vietnam. At
present, the students have been looking at a lot of
Vietnamese crafts. They found out what their
Vietnamese Zodiac sign was and have produced a
pottery version of this, similar to the pottery whistles
made for children.
Maths:
In the unit ‘Money and Sense’ the students are
consolidating their money skills to become more
proficient at handling money.
Work & Community:
This term the students are completing a
special program every Friday which has
been develop by Mrs Kim Moore (TSP
co-ordinator) and Mrs O’Rourke. The
students are learning about a lot of
practical issues associated with finding
and keeping a job, such as, dressing for
interviews, workplace PPE and clothing
requirements, communication skills and
dealing with workplace conflicts. They
have also had sessions up in the school
hairdressing salon and Mrs Kim
Gorman has shown them how to style
and care for their hair and skin.

AGRICULTURE NEWS
Mr Abercrombie
Calves to shine a light on Dairy Careers
Calves are helping to shine a light on dairy industry
careers through Dairy Australia’s innovative school
program, Cows Create Careers – Farm Module.
Cows Create Careers - Farm Module is a six-week
program that aims to increase the awareness of
dairy industry careers in a very hands-on way.
Secondary students are educated by rearing two
three-week-old calves at school and the school is
provided with dairy industry curriculum for years 7
and 8 and years 9 to 11, at no cost.
This year, nine schools in the Hunter Valley region
will participate in the program including Mount View
High School, Newcastle High School, Gloucester
High School, Singleton High School, Morisset High
School, Rutherford Technology High School, Hunter
River High School, Cessnock High School and
Tomaree High School.
Since 2006 Dairy Australia has worked with
thousands of students, teachers, farmers, industry
advocates and communities through its investment
into Cows Create Careers – Farm Module.
alone volunteers gave 1,652 hours of their time
across 23 Australian dairying regions. The National
Centre for Dairy Education (NCDE) also plays an
important role by being an educational link for the
schools.
Locally, the project is funded by Dairy NSW and
receives additional support across the state from
local companies Vella Stockfeeds, Maxum Animal
Nutrition, Tocal College, NSW Department of
Primary Industries and Genetics Australia who have
continued to support the program in the Hunter
Valley region.
“Volunteers play a vital role in encouraging and
supporting students and their career decision
making,” Ms. Lloyd said. “The program has
dedicated volunteers who have knowledge of the
industry and links to education and employment
sectors.”
Upon completion of the program, students and
teachers will be recognised at a Presentation Finale
where prizes are awarded to the winning schools
and students.
The Finale will be held on Monday 27th June 2016 in
Patterson.
Dairy Australia’s Industry Capability Program
Manager, Tracy Lloyd, said the program started in
2004 with dairy farmers in the Strzelecki Lions Club
in Victoria and nine Gippsland schools. With support
from Dairy Australia, Regional Development
Programs, dairy farmers and sponsors, the program
has now grown to over 216 schools across Australia
with 9,949 students completing the program in 2015.
“Cows Create Careers – Farm Module is a program
that builds awareness of dairy industry careers –
from teaching students about educational and
vocational pathways, to profiling the diverse range of
professional careers in the dairy industry,” said Ms.
Lloyd. “By bringing calves into schools, students
have fun learning about the different skills required
in the dairy industry.”
The program has gained strong support from dairy
farmers and advocates across Australia. Last year
