MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
U.P. College of Music
In what will be a remembered event in the future
pages of Philippine music history, I am thrilled
with joy and proud of the achievements of my
colleagues in the UP College of Music for their
skill, determination, hard work, and cooperation
that enabled the production of this first Filipino
jazz rendition of the classic Handel's oratorio
Messiah (Christmas portion) in the country.
Deciding to embark on this herculean project
barely two months ago, it was not easy for Rayben Maigue (conductor), Jai
Aracama (Choirmaster), and Krina Cayabyab (arranger) to immediately accept
the project given the limited time left before now. But they did. Thanks to
Pete Lacaba who finished the Filipino translation with speed and assurance,
this triumvirate of musicians from the College was enthused with the idea
that, back then, was quite fuzzy, except that they had the collective will to
surmount the artistic requirements. To tell the truth, the project was a
constant obsession for Rayben who already expressed intention to initiate this
last year. As dean, I bit on the bullet because I am aware of the symbolic
meaning of what a translated Messiah can mean in this current interconnected
world order--especially from the point of view of the Filipinos. As things now
stand, there has to be a push in our culture, moving our tradition by injecting
new ideas to it. Coupling excellence with innovation is the way, I believe, for
culture to have a bright future. This Pinoy jazz Messiah is an example of this
for it moves culture to the steps of time and it puts an end to the passive
inertia of tradition's routines that stifle creative and critical thinking. The
project could not have happened without Pete and our triumverate jazzers
who mediated the vision. I thank them for taking on the challenge of making
this music become different--driving it forward to new-ness and therefore
rejuvinating our ways of doing things. I am awed at how brilliant these music
teachers from the College of Music really are. Rayben, Jai, and Krina are
absolutely some of the finest professional Filipino musicians today. I thank this
wonderful trio plus Pete for his salinawit who has been, in a way, a lynchpin
to this on-going Filipino culture of excellence and innovation.
Congratulations to Pete, Jai, Rayben, Krina, and to all the choirs tonight who
are truly part of this dynamic way of viewing culture. We, in UP, are lucky to
have the support of administrators who value innovation and the freedom to
artistic expressions.
Mabuhay to us all!

The Cherubim and Seraphim is the official children’s choir of the University of the
Philippines. Founded on September 21, 1971 by Flora Zarco Rivera of the College of
Music, the group was intended to be a laboratory for experiments on children’s choral
singing in the Philippines. In the 42 years of its existence, the choir has championed the
development of a unique Filipino repertoire for children, regularly commissioning new
works and drawing on the expertise of artists from various colleges of the University. It
shares this repertoire with children all over the nation in the form of live performances,
workshops, recordings as well as appearances on television for various networks. The
group also serves as a laboratory choir for the U.P. College of Music, regularly lending
its services for student recitals. Finally, it acts as a service choir for U.P. concerts,
programs and other official functions. Its present director is Elena Rivera Mirano of the
College of Arts and Letters.

The UP Staff Choral Society (UPSCS) is a musical performing group that is composed of the
University employees--administrative staff, REPS, and faculty--of the Diliman Campus.
Since it was formed in 1973, the UPSCS has taken its mission to heart and brought its gift of
music to audiences as close to home as the UP Diliman campus and as distant as Canada and
the United States.
Under the aegis of its able conductor, Chris M. Reyes, the UP Staff Chorale has mounted
several concerts that included shows in venues within and outside of Metro Manila. Among
the Chorale’s major concert productions were: Lipad ng Pangarap; Kayod, Kayod, Kayod…;
Babalik Ka Rin; Like an Eagle; Bituing Natatangi; Unchained Melody; Isang Daan sa Sandaan;
Tinig at Paglingap; and Dalawit.
Aside from its own productions, the UP Staff Chorale also took part in other important
events in the University, including the Gawad Chancellor sa mga Retirado, the Philippine
Independence Centennial Celebration in 1998; and the Pamantasang Hirang, UP Centennial
Concert. To date, the UP Staff Chorale has embarked on four international concert tours in
North America and Southeast Asia. With their songs, they have assuaged the nostalgia of
homesick Filipinos, as well as showcased the popular and traditional culture and musical
heritage of the Philippines to audiences abroad.

The UP Jazz Ensemble is a university based jazz group that was founded in 1977. Prof.
Rayben Maigue, the musical director of the group is an accomplished trumpet player,
composer and arranger. He is also the present chairman of the UP College of Music Winds
and Percussion Department. He has helped establish the group then and now and
continues to widen jazz appreciation in the country. . For his work in the field of jazz, he
and the group have garnered awards three of which are worth mentioning.
In 1989, The First City Jazz Achievement Award was given them for their meritorious
contributions to the Field of Philippine New Age and Jazz Music. Also in the same year,
by Petron Corporation for being the prime movers of jazz in the Phil; for 21 years of
virtuosity as a group; and for being dedicated leaders in developing Filipino talent in
the most diverse field of music, thus providing the Phil and the world a life-long source
of artists who are aware of their unique mission to instill a deep love for what is noble
and exemplary about being Filipino.
In 2010 Prof. Maigue was awarded by the University of the Philippines Board of Regents
on recommendation of the university president the UP Arts Productivity Award for his
work in the field of jazz, for his highly varied repertoire of both Filipino and traditional
contemporary works
The Band has 30 members consisting of students and alumni of the UP College of Music.
The group’s repertoire ranges from well known works of composers and arrangers like
Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Sammy Nestico, George Gershwin and Count Basie as well
as contemporary composers such as the Beatles, John Williams, Dave Gruisin and even
Pinoy jazz works of Filipino composers like Angel Pena, Richie Quirino and Jon Palacio.
Aside from the main group, smaller groups of about three to ten members are active
professionally. In effect, the UP Jazz Ensemble has served as a training ground for
student arrangers, composers and conductors and has spawned many of our country’s
young professional jazz musicians like the Ugoy Ugoy Band, Side A, Brass Monkeys,
Parliament Syndicate and the AMP Big Band.

The University of the Philippines Singing Ambassadors (UPSA) is one of the Philippines' foremost choral
groups today. Founded by Conductor Ed Manguiat, UPSA initially comprised members of 5 batches of
the Kalayaan Choral Crowd (KCC), a freshman dormitory choir. Years of hard work and persistence
under Ed’s leadership brought the group to a bright spot in the local Philippine choral scene, eventually
equipping them to pursue international tours, competitions, and festivals. Now on its 34th year, UPSA
has so far garnered five (5) Grand Prizes, 23 First Prizes and various other prizes in competitions in
Arezzo & Gorizia, Italy; Debrecen, Hungary; Tours, France; Varna, Bulgaria; Llangollen, Wales;
Neuchatel, Switzerland; Torrevieja and Cantonigros, Spain; Sopot, Poland; Trencianske Teplice,
Slovakia; Maasmechelen, Belgium; Wernigerode, Germany; Arnhem, the Netherlands; and Prague &
Pardubice, Czech Repaublic. Similarly, Ed Manguiat, a choral clinician, composer/arranger and
musical director - was awarded the Special Prize for Excellent Conducting Performance at the 25th
Bela Bartok International Choirs Festival (2012) in Debrecen, Hungary, following the Dirigentenpreis
(Conductor‟s Award) at the 2nd Johannes Brahms International Choir Competition (2001) in
Germany. UPSA is the first Asian choir to win the Grand Prize in the most prestigious “Concorso
Polifonico Guido d’Arezzo” in Italy in 2001. This triumph qualified the choir to compete in the14th
European Grand Prize (EGP) for Choral Singing in 2002, the most coveted choral prize in the world.
UPSA is one of only 4 Filipino choirs (Philippine Madrigal Singers, UST Singers, Ateneo Glee Club, and
UPSA) to have reached an EGP Round.

The University of the Philippines Madrigal Singers was organized in 1963 by National Artist,
Professor Andrea O. Veneracion. The choir is one of the world’s most awarded, having
consistently won all the top prizes in the world’s prestigious choral competitions: Concorso
Polifónico Guido d’Arezzo (Arezzo, Italy); Concorso e Festival Internazionale Di Canto Corale
“Seghizzi” (Gorizia, Italy); International Chamber Choir Competition (Marktoberdorf,
Germany); International Chorwettbewerb (Spittal, Austria); Festival Choral International de
Neuchatel (Neuchatel, Switzerland); Florilège Vocal de Tours (Tours, France); International
May Choir Competition Prof. G. Dimitrov (Varna, Bulgaria); Béla Bartók International Choir
Competition (Debrecen, Hungary); Festival Internacional de Música de Cantonigròs
(Cantonigros, Spain), Certamen Coral de Tolosa (Tolosa, Basque Country, Spain) and
Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonia (Torrevieja, Spain). They hold the
distinction of being the first choir in the world to win the European Grand Prix for Choral
Singing twice (1997 and 2007).
The influence of the UP Madrigal Singers on the Philippine and international choral scene
has also been far-reaching. Since 1963, more than 200 singers have joined the choir, many
of whom are now choral and vocal pedagogues actively involved in organizing and
conducting choirs. This eventually led to the organization of the Madz Et Al, a network of
choirs who gather regularly for festivals and workshops. To date, the network has a
membership of almost 60 choirs from all over the country. This contributes to the now very
active choral life in the Philippines. The UP Madrigal Singers also maintain an active
outreach and concert tour schedule, performing in far-flung areas of the Philippines seldom
reached by choral artists. With an average of two overseas concert tours a year, the UP
Madrigal Singers is the country’s most active ambassadors of goodwill and perhaps, also
one of the world’s most-traveled choirs.

Messiah is an English-language oratorio composed in 1741 by
George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), with a scriptural text
compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible, and from
the version of the Psalms included with the Book of Common
Prayer. It was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742 and
received its London premiere nearly a year later. After an initially
modest public reception, the oratorio gained in popularity,
eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently
performed choral works in Western music.
Jose Maria Flores Lacaba, Jr. (1945 - ), popularly known as Pete
Lacaba, is a Filipino film writer, editor, poet, screenwriter,
journalist, and translator. His poetry collections include Ang Mga
Kagilagilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Juan de la Cruz (1979), Sa
Daigdig ng Kontradiksyon (1991) and Sa Panahon ng Ligalig (1991).
Cristina Maria P. Cayabyab or Krina to many, is a singer, arranger,
composer and teacher. She finished Bachelor of Music (2010) major
in Choral Conducting at the University of the Philippines, summa
cum laude. Since 2008, she is the arranger composer, and soprano
1 of the female vocal trio Baihana. In 2011, she began her career
as a university instructor at the College of Music at New Era
University where she taught Philippine Music and Introduction to
Conducting. Krina works as an instructor at the University of the
Philippines Arts Studies Department. She is currently taking Masters
in Music major in Musicology at the UP College of Music.
Reinventing a large-scale work of such inherent constitutionality is a rather precarious
privilege that poses critical challenges for an arranger. Handel’s Messiah, being one of the
most popular and long-lived compositions in the Christian tradition, has overwhelmed me as
if being dared to jump at an edge toward an abyss of contradictions: Shouldn’t the piece be
left to be performed in its whole sanctity? How far is permissible for the piece to be broken
and mended? Who do I cater to, the pleasure-seeking audiences or the critical minds? Can I
do both? And then the contemplation of jazz as a genre and its various forms has consumed
me as well. There are so many definitions and qualities of what the real jazz sound is. But at
the end of the day, the arrangements have tended to simply feature something new. This
kind of material is very appropriate for the UP Jazz Ensemble. It has become more of a trial
to suit this type of arrangement for the choral idiom, and to modernize the originally
classical attack of the soloists. The general vocal range of the work is so wide, and the
acrobatics also extensive that I decided to just use the same key signatures for all the pieces
-- even if this can in turn limit the comprehensiveness of the jazz idiom. The duration of
working on this piece became the toughest to face, receiving the task in September this year
and having to finish almost all songs of the Christmas section in November. It seemed, even
up to now, such a foolish decision to climb on this almost impossible undertaking. But by
God’s eternal grace and plan, the arrangements were produced for this year’s December
performance. If allowed to be performed again in the future, the arrangements will
definitely have revisions and enhancements to further explore the scope of the playing
techniques of the instruments; and to solidify the style of each number by suitably changing
the necessary elements like range, dynamics, rhythm, harmonic progression and melody. It is
an incredible opportunity to be working with Prof. Rayben Maigue, Prof. Janet SabasAracama, the UP Jazz Ensemble, and all the choirs of such high distinction to produce this
fresh project spearheaded by Dean Jose Buenconsejo. I do hope as well that we are able to
achieve the Dean’s vision for this project, “to convey a message that beyond cultural
borders, a heterogenous social world harmony is achievable if alternative voices – jazz and
Tagalog – are heard in the global ecumene” (Buenconsejo). May this new arrangement stir in
us the cheerful spirit of Christmas!
