Late Breaking News
• Pink ? ? ?
This weekend the universal Church celebrates the fourth Sunday of Lent called
“Laetare Sunday.” We unofficially
mark the midway point of Lent, which
is a moment the church celebrates. As
a result, pink cloth and simple flowers
were added to our simple Lenten environment to reflect this moment of joy.
The Church’s joy flows from her expectation that all of us have grown closer
to God through our Lenten prayers and
kind works. For some of us, we don’t
share in this weekend’s excitement since
we have not been as successful as we
had hoped in our Lenten journey. If
that’s the case, it’s not too late! Let’s
make the most of this second half of
Lent!
• Coffee and Conversation
Thursday, April 7 at 9:00 am in the
Adult Education Center. All are invited to come share food and fellowship.
• Almsgiving for Lent
Please remember to bring with you
to Mass each Sunday non-perishable
food items for our food pantry ministry to distribute to the poor. We
are also especially in need of gift
certificates so that we can continue
to help the poor among us. Thank
you for your continued generosity.
Welcome

Bulletin for the week of April 3, 2011
n
Saint Mary Magdalen Mission
“It’s All About Love And Service, Baby!”
On Friday evening, March 25 we enjoyed the crab soup, pbj’s and grilled
cheese. The presence of many Confirmation Candidates raised the spirits and
the hopes of all. We greatly enjoyed the
remarks that two of the members of the
Saint Margaret Youth Substance Abuse
Ministry (SAM Team) made. Erika Lipford (9th grade, John Carroll School)
spoke of education and awareness as
keys to her journey in learning about her
chosen ministry. Thomas Gardner (10th
grade, John Carroll School) explained
how he has come to a greater understanding of the disease of addiction and
how it starts. Evan Zimmer (10th Grade,
Calvert Hall College), as an intern for
the Catholic Review, beautifully captured
photographs from the evening, and
many other Confirmation Candidates assisted in the preparation and serving of
the meal.
“Preparation” and “Serving” or “Loving
and Serving” these were truly the themes
of the entire evening. “It’s all about Love
and Service, Baby!”
Saint Francis de Sales tells us that
throughout life we seek God, in death we
come to know God, and through eternity
we come to love God. Be it
achieving recovery from the
disease of addiction or just
daily living; through gaining
knowledge and consequently taking action, we achieve
transformation. This was
one of the elements which,
as an Oblate of Saint Francis
de Sales, Father Mark Hushen (President and CEO of
Father Martin’s Ashley) visited during his presentation
at this Saint Margaret SAM
Team Lenten Supper.
Father Mark said that the way to find
God is to embrace our brothers and
sisters. By this he meant that with the
exception of our siblings, all males we
ever encounter are our “Brothers from
other Mothers” and all females are our
“Sisters from other Misters.” He related
that since we are all created in His image
and likeness when we truly see and love
our brothers and sisters we see the face
of God.
Relinquish your pride, let it go. Make
still your ego for it springs purely from
your imagination. Be His instrument and
be open to the fact that all things originate from Him and all things return to
Him. He is our Beginning and our End.
Learn how to better love and serve your
brothers and sisters and in this way love
and serve God, our Creator and our Redeemer. Knowledge!—Action!—Transformation!
To save souls is our mission in life. To
save addicted souls is a higher calling.

Jesus: The Word Became Flesh
This is the topic of a four-session discussion
that is planned for April 13, 27 and May 11
and 25 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am in the
Adult Education Center. Join us as we discover who was this carpenter who changed
the course of history – of eternity, explore
the places where Jesus lived, taught and
performed his miracles, journey through
the streets of Jerusalem to Calvary and the
tomb; and encounter the Resurrection and
Pentecost.
These sessions will help you gain a deeper
appreciation for our Savior and the price he
paid for our salvation.

From Father Mike
Dear Friends,
I am writing this column on March 27 in
anticipation of returning to the parish
this Friday April 1.
As you know, I am
completing a threemonth
sabbatical
which began on January 2. Let me say
at the outset: I am looking forward to returning to Saint Margaret.
The root of the word “sabbatical” is
Sabbath, which means rest. Our Jewish
brothers and sisters look upon the Sabbath (which is Saturday) as their day of
rest, comparable to our Sunday. For university professors and clergy, the word
sabbatical has a somewhat fuller meaning. Yes, it does mean rest. For these
three months, I was free of my responsibilities as pastor. Frankly, at this point in
my life, at age 64, that was great! For us,
sabbatical also means a time for renewal.
So, how did I go about renewal during
these three months?
I shared my plan back in November and
December when I announced my sabbatical to you. Allow me to repeat it
now. And by the way, all of this was approved by Archbishop O’Brien, and I am
so grateful to him for that.
First, I wanted time to do some serious
reading and study – something that my
schedule here just does not allow. I bet all
of you understand that in your own lives
too. So, I asked Father Robert Leavitt,
a recognized scholar and professor of
theology at the seminary in Baltimore, to
be my mentor. I gave Father Leavitt a
list of topics that I wanted to read on,
and he supplied me with a bibliography.
I was to read at the pace of about one
book a week and we met once a week for
discussion. This was the agenda for the
months of January and February.
Then my third month, March, was a 30day retreat at the Jesuit Retreat Center
in Los Altos, California. This retreat
is largely based on a plan developed by
Saint Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits,
in the sixteenth century. I will talk about
this in a future column.
Visit our website at www.stmargaret.org
What reading did I do in January and
February? My first topic was: What is
happening to Catholicism? Why has
there been some decline in Catholicism
and, for that matter, in many other Christian denominations as well? And by the
way, this decline is not related only to the
sexual abuse scandal. That is a horrible
problem, but the decline was happening
before this. Why are some people leaving Catholicism? Why are some Catholics not really practicing and by that I
mean not coming to Mass and receiving
the sacraments? I wanted to read and
study and think more in depth about this.
I felt almost called by God to do this as
part of my responsibility as a pastor.
ad page
Could the main issue be that we live in a
very secular society, a society that has a
lot of values that compete with religion?
Could it be that secularism leaves little or
no room for God and faith? Or could it
be us, the Church? Could it be that we
need to adjust to the times and minister
differently or celebrate liturgy differently
or teach about God and the Christian life
differently?
And then, as if the above were not
enough, I also wanted to read about our
country. What are we to make of the polarization in our country? What are we to
make of the lack of civility in American
politics, in at least some American news
networks, and maybe even in ourselves?
And what contribution might we as a
Church make in this situation?
That was the plan for the sabbatical. In
future weeks, I will share more about
what I read and what new or different
ideas I gained.
I am thankful to the parish staff for
all the extras that they did in the three
months I was away. They are terrific! I
am also grateful to the parishioners on
leadership committees who continued to
guide and contribute their time and talent to the wonderful mission of Saint
Margaret Parish. I am especially grateful
to the men and women of our Pastoral
Council who were so supportive of me
in taking this sabbatical. Blessings to all
of you!
Father Mike

Liturgy Corner
Signs and Symbols in the Liturgy
No other religion is as deeply rooted in the tradition of using signs and
symbols as our Catholic Church. In the
Church’s wisdom, she uses ordinary
items such as water, fire, wine, colored
clothes, oil and so many other things to
communicate, as well as to offer us an
opportunity to grow in our relationship
with God. Yet signs and symbols are not
like a math equation where everything
is explained and equals a predetermined
total. Rather, signs and symbols draw
on our unique and individual life experiences and our relationship with God.
This means that the power and use of
symbols cannot be limited to a simple
explanation, as that greatly minimizes
the power these items can individually
have in our lives.
For example, we sometimes here the
limiting explanation for incense, that it
only symbolizes prayers rising to God.
Although this idea is true, it really is only
one aspect of incense. As you see and
smell the incense, perhaps you are reminded of a loved one’s funeral, and it
brought you comfort to see the honor
with which your loved one’s body was
being treated. Maybe incense reminds
another person of a liturgy where they
truly felt God’s presence in their life.
Still, another person might see the symbol of incense as a reminder of past holiday liturgies, a sign of special occasions.
These are just a few examples from innumerable possibilities.
So, allow yourself not to seek a very
calculated approach to Liturgy. Don’t let
it become a checklist of what you think
you know and what you don’t. Allow the
Liturgy to touch you in a very personal
way. Don’t limit the Liturgy, but let it
speak freely, so that you and I will benefit from the Liturgy, the continual sign
of God’s awesome love for us.

There are actions that parents can take to
ensure that test results truly reflect what
knowledge their children have and can apply
to solve problems.
• Have a talk with your children about why
the standardized tests are important. Emphasize that results do matter and that they
should take their time and do their best on
the tests. Rushing leads to careless mistakes.
• Tired and/or hungry children do not concentrate and focus as well as those who are
rested and fed. Therefore, get your children
to bed early. Feed them some protein for
breakfast so they are not hungry just as testing begins. Have them bring a healthy snack
to school.
• Another reason for making sure your children are rested has to do with the length
of the tests. These tests require an hour or
hour and a half of sustained reading and
thinking, very different than working for a
class period. Therefore, fatigue can really
impact a students’ ability to answer correctly.
• Be on time for school. All testing begins
first thing in the morning.
• Do not send a sick child to school. Sickness impacts test results negatively.
• Do not keep your child out of school for
any reason other than illness. Make up testing
requires students to miss instructional time.
• Reassure your children that they are not
expected to know all the answers. However,
they will know most of them and should be
reassured that they can solve the problems,
think through the questions, and choose the
right answers.

Liturgy Corner
Signs and Symbols in the Liturgy
No other religion is as deeply rooted in the tradition of using signs and
symbols as our Catholic Church. In the
Church’s wisdom, she uses ordinary
items such as water, fire, wine, colored
clothes, oil and so many other things to
communicate, as well as to offer us an
opportunity to grow in our relationship
with God. Yet signs and symbols are not
like a math equation where everything
is explained and equals a predetermined
total. Rather, signs and symbols draw
on our unique and individual life experiences and our relationship with God.
This means that the power and use of
symbols cannot be limited to a simple
explanation, as that greatly minimizes
the power these items can individually
have in our lives.
For example, we sometimes here the
limiting explanation for incense, that it
only symbolizes prayers rising to God.
Although this idea is true, it really is only
one aspect of incense. As you see and
smell the incense, perhaps you are reminded of a loved one’s funeral, and it
brought you comfort to see the honor
with which your loved one’s body was
being treated. Maybe incense reminds
another person of a liturgy where they
truly felt God’s presence in their life.
Still, another person might see the symbol of incense as a reminder of past holiday liturgies, a sign of special occasions.
These are just a few examples from innumerable possibilities.
So, allow yourself not to seek a very
calculated approach to Liturgy. Don’t let
it become a checklist of what you think
you know and what you don’t. Allow the
Liturgy to touch you in a very personal
way. Don’t limit the Liturgy, but let it
speak freely, so that you and I will benefit from the Liturgy, the continual sign
of God’s awesome love for us.

There are actions that parents can take to
ensure that test results truly reflect what
knowledge their children have and can apply
to solve problems.
• Have a talk with your children about why
the standardized tests are important. Emphasize that results do matter and that they
should take their time and do their best on
the tests. Rushing leads to careless mistakes.
• Tired and/or hungry children do not concentrate and focus as well as those who are
rested and fed. Therefore, get your children
to bed early. Feed them some protein for
breakfast so they are not hungry just as testing begins. Have them bring a healthy snack
to school.
• Another reason for making sure your children are rested has to do with the length
of the tests. These tests require an hour or
hour and a half of sustained reading and
thinking, very different than working for a
class period. Therefore, fatigue can really
impact a students’ ability to answer correctly.
• Be on time for school. All testing begins
first thing in the morning.
• Do not send a sick child to school. Sickness impacts test results negatively.
• Do not keep your child out of school for
any reason other than illness. Make up testing
requires students to miss instructional time.
• Reassure your children that they are not
expected to know all the answers. However,
they will know most of them and should be
reassured that they can solve the problems,
think through the questions, and choose the
right answers.

• Pink ? ? ?
This weekend the universal Church celebrates the fourth Sunday of Lent called
“Laetare Sunday.” We unofficially
mark the midway point of Lent, which
is a moment the church celebrates. As
a result, pink cloth and simple flowers
were added to our simple Lenten environment to reflect this moment of joy.
The Church’s joy flows from her expectation that all of us have grown closer
to God through our Lenten prayers and
kind works. For some of us, we don’t
share in this weekend’s excitement since
we have not been as successful as we
had hoped in our Lenten journey. If
that’s the case, it’s not too late! Let’s
make the most of this second half of
Lent!
n
On Friday evening, March 25 we enjoyed the crab soup, pbj’s and grilled
cheese. The presence of many Confirmation Candidates raised the spirits and
the hopes of all. We greatly enjoyed the
remarks that two of the members of the
Saint Margaret Youth Substance Abuse
Ministry (SAM Team) made. Erika Lipford (9th grade, John Carroll School)
spoke of education and awareness as
keys to her journey in learning about her
chosen ministry. Thomas Gardner (10th
grade, John Carroll School) explained
how he has come to a greater understanding of the disease of addiction and
how it starts. Evan Zimmer (10th Grade,
Calvert Hall College), as an intern for
the Catholic Review, beautifully captured
photographs from the evening, and
many other Confirmation Candidates assisted in the preparation and serving of
the meal.
“Preparation” and “Serving” or “Loving
and Serving” these were truly the themes
of the entire evening. “It’s all about Love
and Service, Baby!”
Saint Francis de Sales tells us that
throughout life we seek God, in death we
come to know God, and through eternity
we come to love God. Be it
achieving recovery from the
disease of addiction or just
daily living; through gaining
knowledge and consequently taking action, we achieve
transformation. This was
one of the elements which,
as an Oblate of Saint Francis
de Sales, Father Mark Hushen (President and CEO of
Father Martin’s Ashley) visited during his presentation
at this Saint Margaret SAM
Team Lenten Supper.
Father Mark said that the way to find
God is to embrace our brothers and
sisters. By this he meant that with the
exception of our siblings, all males we
ever encounter are our “Brothers from
other Mothers” and all females are our
“Sisters from other Misters.” He related
that since we are all created in His image
and likeness when we truly see and love
our brothers and sisters we see the face
of God.
Relinquish your pride, let it go. Make
still your ego for it springs purely from
your imagination. Be His instrument and
be open to the fact that all things originate from Him and all things return to
Him. He is our Beginning and our End.
Learn how to better love and serve your
brothers and sisters and in this way love
and serve God, our Creator and our Redeemer. Knowledge!—Action!—Transformation!
To save souls is our mission in life. To
save addicted souls is a higher calling.
