Arts Cultural News is published
three times a year by the
Huntington Arts Council, Inc. and
is made possible, in part, with
public funds from the New York
State Council on the Arts, the Suffolk
County Office of Cultural Affairs, the
Town of Huntington, corporations,
foundations and individuals. The Arts
Council gratefully acknowledges the
support of Town Supervisor Frank
Petrone and Council members
Mark Cuthbertson, Susan Berland,
Eugene Cook, Tracey Edwards
and the Suffolk County Delegation
of the New York State Assembly
and Senate and the Suffolk County
Council members.
Summer at the Huntington Arts Council
continues to showcase the arts and artists. I
am very pleased that the Huntington Summer
Arts Festival kicks off with a performance
by Ann Hampton Callaway on June 25. I
wanted a strong Cabaret performer to open
the season, and Callaway was my first
choice. Prior to her performance, HAC
will honor Anthony (Tony) V. Curto, Esq.
at a reception at Heckscher Museum. We
will present him with our Harry and Sandy
Chapin Arts and Humanitarian Award in
recognition of his continued services to the
Long Island community (see below). The
festival continues with an outstanding array
of talent, including Rita Coolidge, Roy
Haynes, ETHEL, Samuel Torres Group
and theatrical performances of All Shook
Up, Sondheim by Sondheim and A Funny
Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
Thank you to our performing arts director
John Chichiero for his continued good work
in programming 44 nights of performances
in Heckscher Park with something for
everyone to enjoy.
In addition to the Huntington Summer
Arts Festival, the Main Street Gallery will
showcase works of our members and Long
Island artists (see page 15). Please visit the
gallery often and enjoy the fine work. The
Grants for the Arts program has concluded
its panel reviews, and awarded grants to
Nassau and Suffolk arts organizations to
improve the cultural landscape of Long
Island [see page 14].
Our Arts Education Journey program
is adding a Greek Chest as an additional
resource to support teachers, students
and curricula across Long Island. The
Greek Chest is being developed by teacher
Frangista Bertos with major funding from
the Harry Chapin Foundation and an
anonymous donor. It will include artifacts,
resource guides, texts and media to aid
students and teachers to effectively support
sequential learning in the arts, develop
literacy and make connections with people
using community and cultural resources.
HAC continues the vision of Journey’s
founder, Sandy Chapin, supporting the belief
that the arts are a discipline with specific
and rigorous content, and that effective arts
learning should be tied to school goals.
Summer may mean holidays, but it is a
busy time for Huntington Arts Council. I
hope you will be a part of many of the arts
opportunities we have to offer.

Board of Directors News
July 1 starts a new fiscal year for
Huntington Arts Council with a new slate of
officers. We welcome some new members
(more about this in the Fall edition). We also
say goodbye to several long term members,
and thank them for their service.
Our Board President Debbi Honorof
steps down on
June 30.
Her
guidance and care
have helped the
Huntington Arts
Council to move
forward and think
more strategically.
Debbi’s enthusiasm
and passion for
the arts have been
a major asset, and her knowledge of nonprofit arts organizations is first rate. Debbi
oversaw the search for Executive Director
that brought in Marc Courtade. She has
been a terrific colleague and mentor,
helping to insure a smooth transition. Her
accomplishments for HAC are too numerous
to list, but they are all deeply appreciated.
Other long-term members Susan Miller
and Lisa Arden also step down. Susan has
been active in many fundraising projects,
including this year’s Opening Night
Reception of the Summer Arts Festival
honoring Anthony Curto , Esq., our annual
Art Auction and our very successful 50th
Anniversary celebration of the Summer
Arts festival honoring Sandy Chapin last
June. Lisa finishes her term with HAC as
Secretary on the Executive Committee. She
has graciously lent her expertise on legal
matters, and was instrumental on updating
the By-Laws of the organization.
Debbi, Susan and Lisa will remain as exofficio members, allowing them to continue
to contribute their expertise and experience
as we move forward.
The arts enhance our communities and our
lives. It is only through the assistance and
guidance of our Board that we are able to
continue the many programs at Huntington
Arts Council. Please join me in extending
thanks to all members, past, present and
upcoming for helping to enrich the lives
of Long Islanders with quality visual and
performing arts programs.

Letter From The Supervisor
Dear Friends:
Summer is always a season full of arts and
cultural activities and the Town of Huntington
helps to ensure that there are many free and
low-cost opportunities for entertainment and
cultural enrichment close to home. We’re
certain that you won’t be disappointed with
what Huntington has to offer.
A perennial favorite is Huntington’s
Summer Arts Festival, now in its 51st year.
During this year’s Festival the Huntington
Arts Council will present performances every
Tuesday through Sunday evening from June
25 through August 14 on Heckscher Park’s
Chapin Rainbow Stage, with five additional
Thursday evening performances in Northport
Park by the Northport Community Band. The
details of this exciting summer cultural event
can be found elsewhere in this newspaper. I
am really excited about this year’s roster of
top-notch performers and theater productions,
including “You’re A Good Man Charlie
Brown,” “Sondheim by Sondheim” and “A
Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum.”
Of particular note is Coltrane Day on
Saturday, July 23rd, a special daytime
program associated with the Summer Arts
Festival.
This Annual Coltrane Music
Festival presented by The Coltrane Home in
cooperation with the Arts Council includes a
variety of jazz performances and workshops in
celebration of the legacy of jazz saxophonist
and composer John Coltrane, whose signature
album A Love Supreme, was inspired and
created while he lived in Dix Hills in 1964.
This year Coltrane Day will culminate with
the Summer Arts Festival performance of
legendary jazz drummer Roy Haynes and
Fountain of Youth on the Chapin Rainbow
Stage. Additional information can be found at
TheColtraneHome.org.
The Heckscher Museum of Art is
offering terrific exhibitions and programs
to the community over the summer months.
Experience the magical paintings of Gary T.
Erbe in the exhibition Master of Illusion, on
view through August 28. Also, enjoy seeing
Cornucopia: Still Lifes from the Collection,
and Synapses: Threads for Thought. Opening

September 3 is the Long Island Biennial,
a juried exhibition showcasing artists from
Suffolk and Nassau Counties. Public programs
include a June 3 evening performance by
Brass Blast of Long Island with classical
music and a dash of pop and jazz. In July,
art workshops for ages 7-11 explore original
works of art that inspire children to create
their own paintings, sculptures, and edible art.
Finally, on September 18 I urge you to join
the free family arts festival, Draw Out!, which
takes place in both the Museum and outdoors
in Heckscher Park. Visit www.Heckscher.org
for more information.
In addition to regular “Family Night”
performances featured at the Summer Arts
Festival on Tuesdays, another cultural
program much-beloved by families is the free
“Movies on the Lawn” series established at the
initiative of Councilman Mark Cuthbertson.
A complete listing of the dates, locations, and
scheduled movies can be found elsewhere
in this newspaper or by calling Councilman
Cuthbertson at 631-351-3112.
These are just a few of the most popular
offerings. For additional listings of diverse
cultural opportunities throughout the Town
browse the pages of this newspaper and
discover the cultural treasures in your own
“backyard.”

Grants for the Arts
2016 Long Island Arts Grant Awardees
The 2016 Long Island Arts Grants had a
successful year with 66 arts and cultural
organizations and individual artists being
funded for their community minded and arts
driven projects. The Huntington Arts Council
will be following four of this year’s grantees
throughout their yearlong creative processes to
shed light on the important ways that they are
enriching the greater Long Island community.
of documentaries, one library in particular,
the Hampton Library in Bridgehampton,
created a film night on the last Monday of
every month, which is free and open to the
public. The Director of the Hampton Library
in Bridgehampton also has assembled a
documentary film section of HT2FF films,
which are available to circulate with local
library patrons.
An exciting new component has been added to
the Long Island Arts Grants for the 2017 cycle.
The Creative Curriculum category will now be
called Creative Learning to include projects
for lifelong learners. The Creative Learning
category will now offer two funding strands:
K-12 In-School Projects and After-School
and Community-based Learning. Funds can
support arts education projects that take place
in-school during the school day and/or in
after-school and community-based settings
for youth and/or senior learners. This change
was made in an effort to expand collaborative
opportunities for teaching artists and to provide
meaningful arts education programming to
people of all ages. More on this change will be
publicized later this summer (August) in the
Creative Learning guidelines, which will be
available at www.huntingtonarts.org.
HT2FF hopes that this project will be able to
further promote the documentary film genre,
broaden the exposure of filmmaker’s films,
and guarantee a steady supply of top-notch
documentaries to both libraries and other
likeminded organizations.
The Long Island Art Grants are made possible
because of The New York State Council on
the Arts (NYSCA) Decentralization Program,
which was established in 1977 to reach out
communities that might not otherwise be able
to access state funds. The Huntington Arts
Council administers the DEC Program to
Long Island to make arts support available to
geographically, economically, and ethnically
diverse populations, and to increase the vitality
of and livability in our local communities and
neighborhoods.
Creative Communities
BRIDGEHAMPTON,
NY
— The
Hamptons Take 2 Documentary Film
Festival (HT2FF) champions and celebrates
the rich, diverse and challenging world of
documentary film. Their aim is to bring the
work of talented and deserving documentary
filmmakers to new audiences. This year
HT2FF received funding to expand its
“Take in a Take 2 Film” project. The project
started as a collaborative effort between the
festival, filmmakers and local libraries and
organizations to offer year-round access to
quality documentary films.
With its grant funds, HT2FF will develop
and formalize this program by compiling
a ‘festival collection’ that includes over 50
documentary films from its 2008 to 2015
festivals, film synopses, and branded DVD
cases to make available to the public. They
also have collaborated an outreach initiative
with local libraries to offer their archived
festival films without charge. With this trove
HT2FF applied to the Long Island Arts
Grants because of its emphasis on community
engagement. Their outreach project is geared
towards reaching the many hamlets and towns
on the East End of Long Island, and they look
to extend its reach to a broader audience who
seek out quality programming and films.
FREEPORT, NY—The Long Island Arts
Council at Freeport (LIACF) is a nonprofit organization that is committed to the
idea that the power of the arts is to touch the
mind and enrich the soul of the individual and
community through advocacy and education.
With their grant funds, LIACF is collaborating
with Operation S.P.L.A.S.H., a volunteer nonprofit chartered by the Town of Hempstead,
which patrols the South Shore of Long Island’s
urban waters to remove debris and monitor and
identify pollutants, as well as their sources.
Together LIACF, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H
will be working on the “Recycling Art”
project. The goal of the project is to teach
Long Island youth about environmental
sustainability and conservation by creating
art out of materials that are overlooked,
discarded, broken, or forgotten and
transforming them into artwork. LICAF will
showcase how trash can be magically altered
in to something beautiful and sustainable by
anyone! They expect this project will help
students realize the need to raise awareness
of the community’s relationship with the
Earth by being caretakers and stewards of it
through environmental sustainability. LIACF
also wants to impart to the students that art is
all around us and can be created by anyone,
even with every day recycled objects not
generally considered as useable for art. By
making children aware of this, LICAF hopes it
will change their perspective to look at aspects
of daily living differently and creatively. The
student’s artwork will be exhibited and double
as citizen education about the issues of Long
Island-based ecology, conversation, and solid
waste pollution.
LICAF applied to the Long Island Arts Grants
as they felt receiving funds would provide
the avenue to fully realize their project and
administer it properly. They hope that the
grant will also act as a springboard to help
the community recognize the worthiness and
importance of this project and its goals.

Creative Individual
Creative Curriculum
PORT WASHINGTON, NY—Elise May
is an independent Teaching Artist, educator,
actor, singer and storyteller who has performed
and taught in the U.S. and internationally.
May works with school districts, libraries
and corporations on communications skills,
community development and developing
educational programs using theater arts for
vocal empowerment. Using her degrees in
Theatre and Communicative Disorders and
Sciences, May developed the funded program
Multicultural Voices—I Have a Dream, which
she is teaching in the Port Washington School
District at the Carrie Palmer Weber Middle
School and Paul D. Schreiber High School.
All of May’s programs are focused on helping
students of all ages find their voice. While
this can be difficult for many, May has found
students who were not raised speaking English
or those who have recently immigrated have
the most difficulty. Finding inspiration through
her mother’s immigration story, May has
worked with the English-Language Learner
population for many years using theater voice
exploration, improvisation and dramatic
enactments to help these students find their
voices and become as comfortable expressing
their stories and dreams in English as in their
first language.
Multicultural Voices—I Have a Dream draws
inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s
“I Have a Dream” speech as an example
of inspired writing, embracing diversity
and impassioned presentation. By the end
of May’s program, students witness their
growth by comparing an initial taping of their
presentation to a final one. It is May’s hope to
increase students’ comfort level with spoken
English so they may perform better in the
classroom and have fun using language for
expressing their hopes and dreams!
May chose to apply to the Long Island Arts
Grants as the Creative Curriculum grant
opportunity is a perfect match for her program,
Multicultural Voices—I Have a Dream. The
school district, administration and parent
organizations show as much support as they
can but, unfortunately, it isn’t always enough
to support this growing program. This year’s
funds have allowed this program to grow from
the middle school to include the high school
as well. In these times, schools rarely have
the budget to fully support a teaching artist or
arts education program. The Long Island Arts
Grants program helps make it possible to bring
this vital program to deserving students.
ST. JAMES, NY—Chanika Svetvilas is a
visual artist who through her artwork utilizes
personal narratives to share experiences in order
to disrupt stereotypes and reflect on contemporary
issues and cultural identity to create meaningful
dialogue. Svetvilas was awarded for her project,
The Space In Between, which addresses mental
health differences.
The inspiration for Svetvilas’ project comes from
being diagnosed at the age of 25 with bipolar
disorder. As an artist, Svetvilas wanted to create a
multimedia installation for others to gain a deeper
understanding of the condition and the diversity
of lived experiences dealing with mental health
difference, and as someone who has encountered
stigma and prejudice due to her disability.
Part of Svetvilas’ creative process for this project
is including the community in to her final piece.
Svetvilas is gathering conversations between
loved ones where either a person self identifies
with a mental health difference or a loved one
is supporting a person with a mental health
difference. Svetvilas is also giving artist talks,
sponsored by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental
Illness), at Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson and
at North Shore University Hospital in Plainview
to introduce people to her work and project.
Currently, Svetvilas is collaborating with Sarah
Boles, Coordinator of Mental Health Services
at Suffolk Community College Counseling
Center-Ammerman Campus and Lisa Melendez,
Professor of Library Services and Library Gallery
Curator to involve their college community in
the project and to launch The Space In Between
during Mental Health Awareness Week at the
beginning of October 2016.
The Space In Between will be a site-specific
installation that will feature these collected
conversations and gathered objects and images
that relate to a community that self-identifies with
a mental health difference.
Svetvilas’ hope is that her project will resonate
with the audience and that it will initiate and
stimulate conversations and dialogue amongst
families and communities about mental health
difference, while also dispelling myths and
breaking stereotypes.
Svetvilas applied to the Long Island Arts Grants
program so that she would have greater resources
and therefore increase her ability to reach a
larger audience, as well as participants, and to
ultimately fulfill the true potential of the project,
which is to be a catalyst to create a safe place
for these important conversations about mental
health difference to take place.
Svetvilas is open to participants located anywhere
who wish to share their stories. Please contact her
at [email protected] if you would like to
participate.

Juror Kevin W. McEvoy-Artist statement
“Beyond the Veil”
“Authors,
poets,
mythologists,
theologians, and artists have for millennia
pondered the disparity between the inner
world of humanity and the outward surface. The visual art of
portraiture is an
extraordinarily
powerful
exploratory
tool by which
we
reconcile
or expose the
chasm between
the inner and
outer workings. A paintbrush
in the hands
of a skilled
portrait painter
Maurizio
is as a scalpel
by
Kevin
McEvoy
in the hands
of a skilled surgeon- a rolling back of the
uppermost layers, to see the workings
beneath- whereby we see beyond the veil.”

Fall 2016 Cultural Workshops for Teachers
Huntington Arts Council’s Arts in
Education JOURNEY Program offers
a series of Cultural Arts Workshops
for teachers each fall. The program is
implemented in partnership with the school
districts of Cold Spring Harbor, Commack,
Harborfields, Huntington, Northport/East
Northport, Plainview/Old Bethpage and
South Huntington. The goal is to foster
understanding of cultural diversity and
traditions through the arts.
Teachers gain in-service credit and
professional development in accordance
with their district’s policy.
Workshops provide tools for teaching with
the following approaches:
• An introduction of worldwide cultures
for making curriculum connections at all
grade levels.
• Teaching students to exhibit empathy and
respect the diverse perspective of others in
the community.
• The connection to NYS learning
standards for Arts.
• The use of artifacts in the classroom to
support ELA and Social Studies learning
standards.
• Professional Development for both
classroom and special area teachers.
Workshops are FREE for teachers within
our partner districts and available to teachers
outside the Journey partnership for a small
fee.
Huntington Arts Council’s Fall Cultural
workshops for Teachers will run on the
following dates: October 19, 26 and
November 1, 9,16 of 2016. Times on each
date will be 4:30 to 7:30 pm.

A Creative Aging Professional Development
Program for Huntington Arts Council
Organizational Members.
In an effort to broaden our offerings to
our non-for-profit members, the Huntington
Arts Council is partnering with Lifetime
Arts Institute in professional development
for arts-in-education programming called
Creative Aging.
Creative Aging...What is it?
Every day more than 10,000 Americans
will turn 65. They are living longer, healthier
lives. They want and need community
based programs that go beyond passive
entertainment, combat social isolation
and provide engaged, meaningful learning
opportunities.
The field of Creative Aging, which
focuses on the beneficial and powerful role
of arts-in-education in enhancing the quality
of life for older adults, is increasingly
recognized as an important contributor
to positive aging efforts. Creative Aging
programs with Lifetime Arts Institute are
conducted by professional teaching artists,
build art-making skills in all arts disciplines
and encourage social engagement – keys to
positive aging.
If your organization is a Huntington
Arts Council member, your organization
has older adults (55+) patrons and you are
looking for innovative ways to reach this
community – this is an opportunity for
your organization to get training in Creative
Aging. The $75 fee includes up to 2 people
in your organization and will run 2 full days
in October.

L.I. Spotlight Concerts
The Huntington Summer Arts Festival
has earned a reputation for adventurous
programming. Those who attend regularly
know we like to mix things up – presenting
a tapestry of musical genres performed by
local and touring artists and ensembles
from different parts of the country and from
around the globe.

This year, we’ve had an opportunity to turn a

bands who merit special attention - young
emerging artists
of and for the new
millennium, if you
will.

On Sunday, August 7, Ladies Drink Free
bring their blend of gritty funk, modern pop,
sultry R&B, arena rock, and world rhythms
to the Chapin Rainbow Stage. The group,
many of them graduates of Huntington
and Walt Whitman High Schools, have
been making a name for themselves and
generating a grassroots following with a
string of notable performances including
Webster Hall, the Great South Bay Music
Festival, and a northeast tour. In 2016,
the band released their highly-anticipated
debut album, simply titled Ladies Drink
Free. The record captures the versatility
of the band’s collective style as well as the
individual prowess of each member. Armed
with a passion for their craft, a clear vision
for their future, and a disciplined approach
to self-management and promotion, Ladies
Drink Free continues to gain notoriety as a
massive musical force in the making.
Cloud Caverns arrives Thursday, August

band centered around the duo of Brandon
Peterson (“Hotel of the Laughing Tree”) and
producer Dan Bouza, Cloud Caverns teeters
somewhere between folk, experimental,
and progressive rock, experimenting with
a variety of genres and brooding lyrical

album Gypsy Loft, reviewer Richard
Moses wrote in Mundo Musique, “If you’re
a fan of indie folk, acoustic music, or folk

from East Islip, the pair demonstrate a very
DIY work ethic, self-producing/mixing/
releasing/promoting all of their work.
Finally, thanks to the efforts of David
Stewart Wiley and members of the former
Long Island Philharmonic, we are also
blessed to present the premiere all-classical
concert by the new (and perhaps temporarily
named) Concert Orchestra of Long
Island on Saturday, August 13. Wiley, an
enormous talent who needs no introduction
to local audiences, will conduct and
perform on piano. He will also give a brief
pre-concert talk about the program and to
introduce the orchestra. His colleagues, all
freelance musicians from the Philharmonic,
will then perform under an agreement with
the Local 802 AFM, Associated Musicians
of Greater New York.
“The annual appearance of the Philharmonic
has always been an artistic highlight of
the Summer Arts Festival and often drew
each Festival’s largest audience,” said
HAC Performing Arts Director John
Chicherio. “The closing of that cherished
institution was a devastating loss, not only
to Huntington’s, but to the entire region’s
cultural life. I sincerely hope this concert
marks the emergence of a new classical
music organization to carry on the legacy
of the Philharmonic.”
Maestro Wiley, Music Director of the
Philharmonic for 15 years, is planning a
program that will fit the instrumentation of
a baroque chamber sized orchestra. “Music
Under the Stars: Classical and Baroque
Fireworks” will include selected classical
and modern works such as Mozart’s
Symphony No. 41 in C Major “Jupiter”;
Franz Joseph Haydn’s Piano Concerto
in C Major; Handel’s Suite from “Music
For Royal Fireworks”, and “Water Music
Suite”; Gershwin selection TBD: Scott
Joplin rags; Wiley – film Music from Lake
Effects. The evening will include guest
soloist Jillian Coscio, an award winning,
sixteen year-old flutist from St. Anthony’s
High School. Ms. Coscio is another
exemplary talent we are privileged to shine
a L.I. Spotlight on!
Coltrane Day Festival
Photo of Michelle Coltrane
On Saturday, July 23rd, The Coltrane
Home will stage an all-day, familyfriendly “Coltrane Festival” of live music
and music workshops held in conjunction
with the Huntington Summer Arts
Festival at Heckscher Park. The event is
a collaborative effort with the Huntington
Arts Council and the Town of Huntington.
The event’s theme, “Building Community
through Music,” celebrates the legacies
of music giants John and Alice Coltrane,
who lived in Dix Hills. The festival
will host workshops, master-classes,
community jams and live performances
for all ages and levels. Great live music
performances, including jazz, funk, blues,
hip-hop and electronic music will be
featured, with top local music talent on
display. The best of local arts and food
will be included this year along with
many opportunities for young musicians
to play with professionals.
Representing the Coltrane family in 2016
will be vocalist Michelle Coltrane, Ravi
Coltrane’s sister and John Coltrane’s
daughter. The day will culminate in
an evening performance by legendary
drummer Roy Haynes who played and
recorded with John Coltrane (Newport
63, Impulse Records). Haynes brings
his exciting band, the Fountain of Youth,
which even with their incredible energy
work hard to keep up with the intensity of
the 91 year old master.
Event organizers plan to highlight local
music talent, including high school
and college bands performing on a
special stage. Renowned jazz bassist
Matt Garrison, from groundbreaking
Shapeshifter Labs in Brooklyn, has
signed on to curate the daytime programs.
Garrison is the son of Jimmy Garrison,
John Coltrane’s extraordinary bass player.
Additional information will be announced
in the coming weeks. Pre-registration
for workshops is strongly suggested as
seating will be limited for some activities.
Please check www.thecoltranehome.
org for more information, updates and
registration.
