Beneath the Spire...
WHERE THERE IS A VISION . . .
I love telling the story of how our 2015 Vision Statement came to
fruition. It was this past May and our Session was hunkered down at
Davidson College Presbyterian Church one beautiful Saturday afternoon
for our Annual Session Retreat. Art Ross, my pastoral coach and our
Session’s consultant, was leading a discussion on how, as the spiritual
leaders of the church, our Session is tasked with honoring the past while
leading forward into the future. And as the sun shone through the large
windows of the church’s Congregation House, it was as if the light
revealed exactly what our elders needed to see…
Over the next few months, through follow-up meetings and numerous
emails, the members of the 2014 Session created a bold vision for the coming year – one that lays out why what we
do matters, as well as what we plan to do. As someone who has gone through this process with other churches, I
was struck by how well the group coalesced around the task at hand and how quickly the vision materialized. What
this tells me is that this vision had already been there for some time, waiting for the right moment to be tapped into
and revealed. Indeed, God is good!
For months since, I have been telling you how proud I am of the Session and the strength of their leadership, which
is absolutely crucial for any church desiring to move forward. But what I want to make clear is that I not only
support the Session, I support their vision as well. In my opinion, it is a perfect blend of continuing meaningful
traditions and ministries while being very intentional about pursuing new initiatives that match well with our
congregations’ culture. The plan to eliminate the budgeted deficit in four years is a particularly bold but very
necessary goal that thrills me to the core. I’ve shared this vision statement with many ministerial colleagues of
mine, and they agree – this is the sign of a strong session and a strong church, and a God who is in the midst of
doing great things with both.
There is nothing in this vision that is too much of a reach; too “out there” for us to attain. At the same time, there is
much in this vision that cannot be realized if we as a congregation simply maintain our normal levels of giving and
support. Make no mistake: this vision will require a lot of us. It will require us to become “generous givers” in our
time, talents and treasure. But this vision is undoubtedly worth our individual and collective efforts to bring to
fruition – of this, your Session and I are convinced. If there has ever been a time in Trinity’s history for something
like this to take place, it is now.

As I shared in the Montreat worship service, I love that our church refers to the conclusion of our Stewardship
journey as “Response Sunday.” The language makes the correct theological assertion that God has acted first
– in this particular case, providing our spiritual leaders with a vision for the coming year. Thus, it is our turn
to respond. And my hope and prayer is that, if you haven’t already as part of our worship service, you will in
the coming days.
We have a vision, my friends – and where there is a vision, the people most certainly flourish. And for that,
thanks be to God!

We believe in providing a solid,
consistent and comprehensive
foundation for the church as it
seeks to worship, study and serve.
We will strive to effectively and
faithfully manage our resources of
people, treasure (our financial
support) and our physical plant.
We will support Trinity’s mission by
sustaining our infrastructure, while
at the same time responding
proactively to inevitable change.
We believe in rooting people in the
living story of the Christian faith by
fostering community among those
who strive to grow through
worship, study and service, and to
live as God’s faithful people. We
believe in telling the story in a way
that transforms us so we may be
open to each other, care for one
another, and worship with music
and poetry – all of which enhances
our relationship with God and with
each other.
With your support and with God’s
blessing, in 2015 we will:





Continue faithful stewardship
of our Capital Campaign as it
relates to the buildings and
campus;
Make the successful transition
from a temporary associate
pastor position to a permanent
and called associate pastor
position;
Begin a four-year effort to
balance annually generated
income with annual expenses;
Actively work toward growing
the endowment and increasing
its positive impact on the
overall mission of the church;
and
Actively work to address
specifically identified smaller
capital projects and begin to
establish a reserve for major
repairs.
With your support and with God’s
blessing, in 2015 we will:





Create a comprehensive
Sunday School ministry that
includes a variety of adult
learning opportunities and
church-wide fellowship;
Grow our youth ministry by
expanding youth mission
experiences during the annual
congregational retreat at
Montreat and providing
summer conference
opportunities for our middle
schoolers;
Implement a comprehensive
new member ministry that
involves informal gatherings
and New Member Sundays to
integrate new members into
the overall life of the church;
Continue to expand our
church’s communication via
our new website and the use of
the Constant Contact Program;
and
Create a new proactive care
and comfort ministry with our
new Parish Associate Minister.

Events, Mission & Outreach,
Stewardship, Weekday School
We believe in putting our Christian
faith into action - being not only
believers in Jesus but followers of
Jesus. We believe in a faith that
“reaches out” both within our
church and outside its walls,
seeking to enlarge the embrace of
Christian love and practice.
Through serving our God, we unite
and inspire God’s people to love, to
be disciples and to give back to
God what we have received from
God.
With your support and with God’s
blessings, in 2015 we will:






Share Trinity’s campus to further
develop our many outreach
programs, including Room in the
Inn, Freedom School, and
Friendship Garden, that utilize
the talents of our members;
Coordinate and implement a
multigenerational service project
to foster a greater sense of
Trinity’s mission;
Host at least two events on our
campus geared toward the
surrounding neighborhood and
larger community;
Maintain and grow
the Weekday School ministry by
focusing on our surrounding
neighborhood, increasing
enrollment and engaging existing
families so they feel more
connected to our church
programs;
Provide the opportunity for
participation in meaningful acts
of stewardship, while offering a
variety of new legacy gift options
to help fund our ministries; and
Continue to learn about Trinity’s
impact on individual members of
all ages through their shared
personal stories.
IMPACT STORY - Keeley O’Keefe
One Sunday per month during the worship hour congregation members share an “Impact Story”. Please find
below Keeley O’Keefe’s story shared September 21.
Every week before church, our youth group meets
for Sunday School. Each Sunday brings a new
lesson and a new breakfast. The Bojangles biscuits
or muffins are always a favorite and are demolished
quickly. It's awesome to have a place where no one
judges you for eating that second muffin or the third
biscuit. When 6:00 rolls around, our youth group
comes back together to eat dinner, laugh with friends
and play a game like Stackers. We all leave our
phones and car keys on the table as we walk in,
unplugging for the short hour and a half.
Every summer, our Youth group travels to a city
in the United States, but out of North Carolina.
Mission trips are the best. I get to see a totally
different way of life, a side I knew existed in my
head, but had never seen in my world of south
Charlotte. Through the trips, I learned that a life
can change in the blink of an eye. When we worked
in Atlanta, Denver and San Antonio through DOOR,
I met new people, each with their own story, their
own experience, their own life. Last year in Denver,
all the participating youth were given a challenge.
Each youth member and advisor was given a dollar
and two hours. With the money we had, we had to
buy our dinner. Andy Tong, George King, Brent and
I walked down the streets brainstorming ideas for
what we could buy with four dollars. We ended up
with two cans of soup and a pack of tortillas.
Coming out of the store, we noticed two homeless
men sitting on the edge of the park, prompting Brent
to ask if we really needed the tortillas. We gave
them to the man who calls himself the Avatar and
listened as he told us about how he was an English
major before dropping out to care for his sick
mother. From the Avatar's story, I realized how one
seemingly inconsequential decision can have
devastating effects, but also what people are willing
to go through for their family.
One of the best parts of the mission trip, is being
able to really get to know the people I live with for a
week, either in a house, in a gym or the basement of
a Mennonite church. You get to know people when
you live with them for a week. You learn their
sleeping habits, whether or not they snore, how long
it takes them to shower or get dressed, and so many
other things. Waiting in the shower line brought out
some interesting conversation and the excitement for
the next year as Ellie and I moved on up through the
ranks.
Through games of Egyptian Rat Slap at eleven
o'clock or hacky sack or mattress surfing on the gym
floor, I got to know our youth group much better
than I ever thought I would. No matter what, I
always know that I will always have the friends that I
made on these trips.
Doctor Brent, our resident hacky sack surgeon,
gives his signature “Talks” on everything from the
purposes of highway lanes to Gatorade versus water,
to seatbelts saving lives. Brent has them all. All of
these “Talks” have given me real world, practical
knowledge. I will always know that the right lane is
for merging and trucks, the middle lane is for
cruising and the left lane is for passing thanks to
these “Talks”.
Trinity and the congregation have been a special
part of my life from day one. I grew up here and
Trinity has given me a safe place where I can be
myself, knowing I will be accepted for who I am.

Where There is a Vision, the People Flourish!
You will have no doubt read or heard this sentiment many times during this - Trinity’s 2015 - Stewardship
season. You will have received a mailing containing an introductory letter from the Stewardship Campaign Co
-Chairs, Lynette Neel and Phil Blount, a 2015 pledge card and a brochure detailing the Vision Statements
created by the Session Cluster Groups.
Indeed, Trinity Presbyterian Church began as a vision; a vision in the 1940s of a forward thinking group of
Christian leaders. A vision of a new church “somewhere way out Providence Road.”
And, as was so artfully described in the letter from Lynette Neel and Phil Blount: “Trinity is still here, still
hopeful and vibrant, because generations of members had a vision for this faith community.”
And, I submit to you, because generations of members have carried on that vision of Trinity as the House of
God and their spiritual home. Here, babies are baptized, children are instructed and confirmed in the faith,
persons united in marriage, and mourners comforted. Here, from divergent paths, we come to pray for God’s
blessing and to give thanks for His tender mercies.
All those generations of members of Trinity Presbyterian Church who have gone before believed - really
believed - in that 1940s vision and supported Trinity with financial commitments, large and small, week in and
week out, year in and year out, decade in and decade out.
Their faithful and generous support was made, to again quote Lynette and Phil, not “out of duty, obligation, or
guilt; these motivations do not sustain a church.” At least, not for 60 plus years. Rather, the faithful and
generous support of Trinity by all who were and are blessed to be a part of this community of faith has been
made freely, with love and gratitude and joy.
Join us as we journey on into the next, new, exciting chapters in the life of Trinity Presbyterian Church. Join us
in support of the vision statements so clearly detailed by the Session Cluster Groups. Join us with your time,
your talent, and with your renewed financial commitment to this, our church home.

Session Highlights
Stated Session Meeting on September 21, 2014:
A motion from the Buildings & Grounds Committee was approved to award the contract to replace the

HVAC contract.
A motion from the Capital Campaign Construction and Weekday School Committees was approved for the
expenditure of $6,000 ($4,000 from the Capital Campaign Construction Fund and $2,000 from the
Weekday School operating funds) for needed technology upgrades to the “L” Building and the Weekday
School Administrative Assistant's office to include telephone and internet.

The Spirit Moved Us…
Those of you who were in the Fellowship Hall for Sunday School on September 28, heard our Haitian guest
Pastor Actionnel Fleurisma and his wife, Yolande, begin the morning, in their native French, singing The
Battle Hymn of the Republic. And after that first refrain, you too joined in the refrains that followed, singing
boldly. And those of you who were in the church service heard Pastor Fleurisma’s sermon about Moses and
the Good Samaritan acting boldly when they saw injustices.
Pastor Fleurisma’s story compels us to be bold in Bayonnais, an impoverished area of subsistence farmers
high in the mountains of Haiti. We can be bold by joining this ongoing, Haitian led mission. Haitians in
Bayonnais are creating hope by breaking the bonds of Voodoo, fighting starvation with improved nutrition,
expanding educational opportunities and initiating community-based health care.
Over the next weeks and months interested Trinity members, under the direction of the Mission and
Outreach Committee, will consider ways to form a relationship with Organization of the Force for Christ in
Bayonnais Ministries (OFCB). At this point the Mission and Outreach Committee has designated a line item
to support a teacher in the Bayonnais schools. The amount of support Trinity can provide will depend on the
generosity of our pledges.
Actionnel Fleurisma invited us to come to Bayonnais to see what is happening. In January we have an
opportunity to join a mission trip planned by South Mecklenburg Presbyterian Church. If you are interested in
details about this trip, please contact Terry Vardell at 704.364.8449. More information will be forthcoming
about activities of OFCB, ways to become involved, and its impact on the lives of individuals and families in
Bayonnais.
“GIFTS TO THE MANGER”
The Mission and Outreach Committee is focusing this Advent season on
several organizations and programs that have specific needs during Christmas. The
following five opportunities for giving will be familiar since you have been so
gracious and generous in previous years. We hope you and your family will share
in the joy of bringing “Gifts to the Manger”. Please place your new and unwrapped gifts in the designated
display boxes in the Cloister.
Alexander Youth Network Each year, Alexander serves
over 5,700 children with, or at
high risk of, serious emotional
and behavioral problems often
induced by neglect or abuse. A majority of the “kids
of Alexander” come from low-income homes, some
are separated from their natural families, and many
live in the care of therapeutic foster parents.
Alexander’s Angel Network provides Trinity with a
way to make these children’s holiday special. All
items should be new, unwrapped and delivered to
collection boxes in the Cloister , with car d
attached. Deadline for donations is December 3.
Room in the Inn – Tr inity is one
of many churches that provide onsite shelter for the homeless during
the winter months. Provisions for
food, shelter, simple toiletries and
basic clothing such as socks, underwear, hats and
gloves are given to approximately 100 men and
women (our neighbors) each season.
Needs: Look in the Cloister for a small tr ee with
card ornaments carrying a specific request from a
child. General donations are also welcome.
Christmas
Thompson Child & Family
Focus – Wish List –
Thompson
provides
dormitories and group housing
for children that are displaced
from home due to abuse and
mental problems within their families. Trinity’s
congregation brings love and joy to these children by
donating one gift for each child. Please bring your
gift to the office by December 11. Please note: do
not wrap gift and tape the card to the package.
Needs: Alter native Chr istmas Gift Car ds will be
available at the Room in the Inn display in the
Cloister. Make a donation in someone’s honor or
memory to this important ministry at Trinity and
give them a gift they won’t forget!
Joy Offering – A Pr esbyter ian
tradition for almost seventy years,
providing congregations direct ways of
supporting specific causes that help
those in need. Fifty percent (50%) of
the Christmas Joy Offering is
distributed to the Board of Pensions for
assistance programs that provide support to retired
and active church workers, their spouses and
families. The other 50% supports Presbyterianrelated racial ethnic education through the National
Ministries Division of the General Assembly
Council.
Needs: J oy Offer ing envelopes will be available
in the pew racks and in the Cloister.
Needs: Ther e will be a boar d in the Cloister with
display cards describing specific items/gifts.
Emergency Winter Shelter - provides
winter shelter, food, and referrals to
various social services in the Charlotte
