A newsletter for and about the fastener industry.
Celebrating 70 years of commitment to the fastener industry.
MWFA AWARDS ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS
On November 5th, the MWFA held their
32nd awarding of MWFA scholarships.
They take great pride in this meeting as
they work very hard all year to build their
scholarship fund in order to continue to
award scholarships annually. It is mainly
the MWFA shows and membership
donations which provide the funds for this
outstanding program. MWFA takes their
motto: ‘Where education is a priority” very
seriously.
The guest speaker
was Ryan Chiaverini.
Ryan Chiaverini is cohost of ABC 7's news,
talk and entertainment
show, Windy City LIVE,
which airs weekday
mornings at 11 AM.
Ryan's quick wit,
work ethic and reputation as someone you
can't help but like, has made him the
perfect choice for ABC 7's new local show.
Chiaverini came to ABC 7 from KUSA-TV in
Denver, Colorado, where he had been the
station's sports reporter since 2002.
During his tenure there, Chiaverini covered
the Denver Broncos and other sports teams
for KUSA's newscasts.
Chiaverini attended college at the
University of Colorado at Boulder, where
he majored in Broadcast/Journalism and
played strong safety for the Buffalo
football team. One of Ryan's fondest
memories is being able to play football
with his twin brother in both high school
and college. A native of Corona,
California, Chiaverini's hobbies include
playing hockey and guitar.
Ryan was very motivational to students
and adults alike reminding them to build
on their strengths and pursue what they
enjoy. He didn’t have an easy childhood
nor did he find success as a professional
football player like his twin brother. He
looked at what he enjoyed and did well to
pursue his career rather than continue to
try to play football professionally. Ryan
reminded attendees we all strive for
achievements in life whether it be in our
college or professional careers. The
presentation, given by Ryan, was
entertaining as well as inspirational.
XL Screw Corp. Scholarship$4,000.00
Thank you to XL Screw for donating
a full scholarship for the 17th year,
which is unprecedented.
XL has been a great proponent of our
motto: MWFA where education is a
priority. Their support has allowed many
students additional assistance to their
college education. One of their employees
was instrumental, many years ago, in
developing the MWFA Scholarship Program.
We thank XL for being one of our many
members to help keep this program alive.
This year the XL
Screw Corp Scholarship
award went to Rachel
Bohrer, daughter of
Keli Bohrer of EFC
International. Rachel is
a College Freshman at
Missouri State
University pursuing her
Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She has
an extensive list of High School Activities
as well as Community Service. Her
volunteer work with Lakota Sioux people
of the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation
in South Dakota confirmed her desire to
become a counselor.
Raul Torres Memorial Scholarship$4,000
Raul recently passed away, a couple of
years ago, after spending 50 years in the
fastener industry. He started with
Schnitzer Alloys in the 60’s then went on
to Albany Products, Action Threaded
Products and Star Stainless Screw. He was
a gentleman who mentored many. Raul
spent several years on the MWFA
Scholarship Committee. We thank Star
Stainless and Fall River for continuing to
fund this scholarship.
The Raul Torres
Memorial Scholarship
was awarded to Riley
Lynch, daughter of
Richard Lynch of
Enthone. Riley is
senior at Belchertown
High School in MA.
She plans to pursue a
Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science at an
East Cost University. She challenged
herself through High School with the most
difficult honors classes striving to be at the
top of her classes. She was able to achieve
this while playing several sports. She looks
forward to an actuarial career.

INCOMING PRESIDENT'S NOTE
This year will mark our 70th year
anniversary; yes, we started the same year
as some famous people like Bill Clinton,
Laura Bush, Steven Spielberg, Donald
Trump, Sally Field, Reggie Jackson and
Cher were born. Just like our membership,
this group is quite diverse and they have
been around for a while. They are well
respected and at the top in their fields /
careers, same as MWFA is to the fastener
industry.
Our membership participation is what
has fostered our success. This newsletter
features pictures from one of our recent
premier events, the Holiday Party. As you
spend time checking out the pictures, the
fun and the networking we enjoyed, I hope
that you are thinking about how you can
become more involved. You can do this by
volunteering your time, talent and energy
as we roll out the New Year. We welcome
and encourage participation at all levels.
Robert Baer/
Abbott-Interfast
Welcome to 2016!
I want to thank all of
the Board of Directors
and Association
Members who have worked so hard to
make the MWFA the success it is today. In
addition, I would like to thank Rich Cavoto
for his dedicated service as the president
for the past two years. We have some of
the best people in the business making up
our membership, attending our events and
contributing to the association in so many
ways. I want you all to know that I
welcome and need your continued
assistance and support as I begin to serve
the MWFA in the role of President. A great
foundation has been laid and with all of us
working together I am certain that we can
continue to make the MWFA an important
force in our industry.
There are a number of committees,
dinner meetings, networking and
educational events that fit into everyone’s
schedule. Please visit our website,
www.MWFA.net to find them all and see
which ones interest you. Please email
Nancy Rich, one of our Board of Directors
or myself directly when you are ready to
jump in.
It’s going to be a busy year here in the
Midwest, with familiar events, like the
Table Top Show, the industry’s largest Golf
Outing, dinner meetings and education
seminars. But we also have some special
things planned for our 70th as well and I
am committed to working to make this
year memorable. I hope you will support
me in these efforts and I look forward to
working with and for each of you. Please
get involved and let us know what you can
do to help improve your Association.
OUTGOING PRESIDENT'S NOTE

I’d like to extend my thanks our
outgoing board members; Rich Pease –
past President who’s been a board member
for 10 years and was our education chair
for the past 10 years. His leadership has

Amanda Clark – an alternate board
member who also contributed greatly to
our meetings and events. At the same
time, I would like to welcome our newest
board members, Jeff Adams and Tim

MWFA SCHOLARSHIPS (
CON’T)
Richard S. Piskoty Memorial
Scholarship-$3,500
Clarcorp has donated the Richard S.
Piskoty Memorial Scholarship. Richard
Piskoty was one of those all around kind of
men. His life led him in many directions
and every path he took he made an impact
on the people around him. He was a
teacher, a coach, a mentor and a friend.
Each of those aspects from him was
present in every job he ever had. The lives
he touched along the way ranged from the
kids he taught and coached to the
salespeople that worked for him. With a
young family in tow, he worked in the
fastener industry until his retirement. It is
because of his devotion to his family,
dedication to his career, and desire to pass
on and give back to others that this
scholarship is dedicated.
This scholarship was
awarded to Megin
Budacki, daughter of
Robert Budacki of
Abbott-Interfast Corp.
Megin is a H.S. senior

day knowing she did everything to improve
the circumstance of each child she treats.

college freshman in
Michigan. She plans to
get into the medical

into an exceptional doctor.

MANUFACTURING TRENDS
Below are some highlights from a recent
article printed in the Chicago Tribune
business section:
• Chicago area and national
manufacturing surveys point to
continued weakness
• Manufacturing makes up 12 percent of
the U.S. economy
• According to analysts jobs could be cut
if the trend continues
• November activity showed a slump far
worse than analysts were expecting
• Business Barometer, focused on the
Midwest's business activity, and the
national ISM Manufacturing Index, are in
contraction
The article also pointed out:
• The pressures could lead to "further
disruptions in hiring and potential
income gains
• Pressures could be heightened if the
Federal Reserve raises interest rates
• In September, Caterpillar announced
plans to eliminate 10,000 jobs
• In November, Deere this week
announced about 220 cuts in Illinois
• Illinois based Navistar, reported in
September a $28 million drop in 3rd qtr
profits as sales of trucks and parts fell
• Both Caterpillar and Deere predicted that
difficult times would remain for 2016
• In November, The Chicago Business
Barometer, showed new orders dropping
sharply to a 44.1 level compared to 59.4
in October
In November, the National ISM
Manufacturing Index dropped from 50.1 in
October to 48.6 and continued to drop in
December to 48.2.
Other economists' reactions to the ISM
manufacturing report:
IHS Global Insight:
"It was the first trip under the 50 mark
since November 2012, and the weakest
reading since June 2009”
JP Morgan Economic Research:
"Export orders continued to look weak ...
the main bright spot in the ISM survey was
the 3.7 point pop-up in the employment
index to 51.3."
TD Economics:
Softness in manufacturing activity was
also apparent across industries, with only
five of eighteen industries reporting
growth in November
Credit Suisse:
"The all-important new orders index ...
fell four points”

MWFA MAILBOX
I wanted to personally reach out to you
and thank you for selecting me for the
MWFA scholarship. I appreciate all the
work the Midwest fastener association
does. The scholarship will truly help me
continue my college path at Iowa State
University and help me achieve my future
career goals. I am sincerely grateful to you
and the board!
Sincerely,
Isabelle Larson
To the Mid-west Fastener Association,
Thank you for providing this scholarship.
I appreciate it a lot mostly because I know
that college is quite expensive. My goal
after high school is to become a large
animal veterinarian, which requires
7-9 years of post-secondary education.
This scholarship will definitely help out in
paying for that. Thank you for your
support!
Ariel Graveen
Dear Mid-West Fastener Association

in my future. I am very appreciative to be
chosen as a recipient for a scholarship to
go towards a college that I will be attending
next fall. I am currently a senior in high

Dear Members of the MWFA:
I would like to thank you very much for
your generosity. Although I was unable to
attend the November 5th meeting for my
award, please know that I greatly
appreciate the consideration for selecting
me as a MWFA scholarship recipient.
Receiving a scholarship from a wonderful
organization is an incredible honor. This
semester, I am attending Marist College and
studying Finance. During the past few
months, I have been away at school. I
joined many clubs and have been
volunteering through my school’s Campus
Ministry. One of the clubs I am involved
with is Beta Alpha Psi, the honor society for
Finance and Accounting majors. After I
graduate in 2019, I hope to further my
education and earn a Masters Degree. The
scholarship will certainly help with the
expense of my tuition. Thank you again for
selecting me for the MWFA scholarship in
the a mount of $1,500.
Sincerely,
Kaitlyn Amoresano

HOLIDAY PARTY FESTIVE TIME FOR MWFA
Proof the Holidays are a time for
giving….
The MWFA holiday party held on
December 10th at Medinah Banquets was
an awesome fun event for nearly 200
attendees. This event is also a time to
collect toys for less fortunate children.
Tables were piled high with toys and a
bowl was filled with checks and cash
providing toys to delight many children.
Over $2,000 is cash was also presented to
the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots program.
Everyone’s favorite Holiday guest of
honor, Santa Claus, was present to help
celebrate. Music That Moves provided fun
music for listening and dancing pleasure as
well as karaoke. It’s amazing the music
talent in the fastener industry. Fastener
voices shared many well know melodies
with the attendees. To add even more fun
to the event, a Photo Booth was available
for pictures creating fun memories for the
attendees! Enjoy the Holiday party photos
at www.mwfa.net).
Food and drinks were great but the joy
of the group being together was the best.
This year’s party is scheduled for
December 8th. So as we move into 2016Happy New Year!! Remember, it’s never too
early to start shopping for your toys for
Toys for Tots to be collected at December’s
Holiday Party!

MWFA MAILBOX (
CON’T)
Dear Midwest Fastener Association
members,
I want to thank you so much for this
incredible donation to my college fund.
I am so thankful to have an opportunity to
attend a university and this generous
scholarship will help make this dream of
mine a reality. As I have been applying to
colleges, I realize the financial commitment
this entails and I am even more grateful for
the gift you have awarded me. I would like
to study to become a nurse, focusing on
pediatrics. The medical field has always
been something I have been interested in
and I am so excited to be able to explore
this rewarding area of study.
Unfortunately, I am unable to attend the
scholarship ceremony because I am
attending Kairos, a three day religious
retreat through my school. Please know
that I will work hard to be deserving of
this gift.
Sincerely,
Brittany Jackson
Dear Mid-West Fastener Association
Scholarship Committee,
I am writing to express my sincere
gratitude to you for making the Mid-West
Fastener Association Scholarship possible.
Months after applying for the scholarship,
my parents gave me a phone call one day
just to check on how I was doing living in
my very first apartment and how my
classes for the semester were going. They
told me they had some news for me and I
had no idea what they were about to say.
I’ve been so caught up with school and
devoting my time to my sorority that I had
forgotten about applying for this
scholarship. I asked them what the news
was and when they told me I received the
scholarship, I screamed with excitement,
literally! I am so thrilled and honored to be
selected for this special and generous
award.
I am currently a senior at Northern Illinois
University majoring in Psychology with
hopes of becoming a School Psychologist. I
plan on graduating in December of 2016,
and then I’ll continue my education by
attending graduate school to earn my
School Psychology Degree. Thanks to the
Mid-West Fastener Association, I am one
step closer to that goal.
By awarding me this scholarship, you
have helped with my financial burden
which allows me to focus more on the most
important aspect of school, learning. In the
middle of my college career, I made a huge
decision in changing my major from
Nursing to Psychology. As a Nursing
major, I had no satisfaction by going to
class and studying because it was
something I wasn’t quite devoted to and
interested in. Since I switched majors, I
have found a new appreciation and a true
love for learning. I’ve noticed that I’ve been
living at the university’s library and it’s not
because I’ve procrastinated or I’m behind
my work. It is because, there is so much
amazing knowledge that I have yet to
discover. I want to understand and retain
the information that has been generously
given to me by my professors and my
textbooks. All my life I wanted to be great
at something and following this career
path. I believe I can achieve that goal.
Your kindness in awarding me this
scholarship has inspired me to support and
make a difference in student’s lives. I hope
one day I’ll be able to help students achieve
their ambitions just as the Mid-West
Fastener Association has helped me.
With sincere gratitude,
Samantha K. Blank
I would like to extend a very sincere
thank you for the award of the MWFA
Scholarship in the amount of $4,000 in
which I graciously accept.
These funds will help to pay for my
undergraduate degree I am currently
pursuing at Missouri State University in
Springfield, Missouri. I am working on my
undergraduate degree in Psychology. I
have plans of continuing my education and
working towards a Masters and eventually
a Doctorate in Psychology. I plan on
becoming a Psychologist or Psychiatrist as I
want to help others.
Again, a very heartfelt thanks for
selecting me as the recipient of this
scholarship. I am very honored and
humbled to have been chosen.
Best Wishes,
Rachel Bohrer

IN MEMORIAM
Arthur “Art” Salani, Jr.
February 5, 1946 – October 29-2015
On October 29, 2015 Art landed on the Eternal fairway where
every shot is a winner. Art was the cherished husband and best
friend of Susan Salani and the loving father of Christopher Salani.
Art will also be lovingly remembered by the Salani family, his
business associates and many dear friends.
Art was the President of Global Fastener & Supply Inc and GF&D,
Grease Fitting Solutions.
Over the years, Global Fastener & Supply has won numerous
awards. The awards Art was most proud of were the Huffy Sports
Partner of the Year award and two consecutive years in a row
Lifetime Products named Global Supplier of the Year.
Art served on the Board of Directors for the National Fastener
Distributors Association from 1995 to 1998.
His career was based on many good business
principles; especially the one that treated
employees with respect and concern. Art truly
felt like they were family and they, in turn felt
the same.

FASTENER DISTRIBUTOR INDEX NEEDS YOUR INPUT
MWFA members are urged to participate
in the Fastener Distributor Index (FDI). The
monthly index provides performance and
sentiment statistics within our industry,
and has become an important
benchmarking tool. The online survey
takes less than two minutes to complete,
and the information is completely secure.
Association president, Bob Baer of
Abbott-Interfast, has contributed to the
survey with expanded data analysis and
chart which appears monthly on the FDI
and MWFA websites. Bob has also appeared
on Fully Threaded Radio to discuss the
index with representatives from BB&T
Capital. Going into its 6th year, the FDI has
been operated as a service to the fastener
industry. Therefore the more surveys
completed the more meaningful and
valuable the FDI data becomes.
Survey participants will receive the
monthly index report, compiled by BB&T
Capital Markets, prior to publishing. For
additional information, and to register for
participation, see the FDI website at
www.fdisurvey.com, or contact Eric
Dudas at [email protected].
