Software Calibration
Both the 850M and 8505A have a 'software
fealure thai makes it easy 10 store
correction factors lor every range 01 any meas,
urement lunction. You can update the 24· hour
accuracy specifications daily, or whenever the
need arises Without having to remove the cov·
ers. Nor do you need to use a card inal point
standard for a reference. Any reference having a
SUitably accurate value belWeen 60% of range
and full scale will do. This -software calibration'
is managed with a lew keystrokes on the front
panel or even remotely when used as part of a
test and measurement system.

Measurement Speed
(NSN 6625·01 · 126·3154)
(NSN 6625·01 ·234·4 134)
Most system DMM manufacturers use an inte·
grating technIQue for A-to-D conversion . That
means there must be a compromise between
resolution and reading speed. The 8505A and
8506A use a Fluke patenled "recirculating reo
mainder" technique for A·to-D converSion that
does not compromise 6 '1~ digit resolution at
reading speeds up to 500 per second for de
voltage measurements. Flont or rear measurement inputs are SwitCh-selectable from the front
panel. For system applications the position of the
switch can be sensed through the interface. An
external trigger if1lUt is included 10 control the
liming ot measurements remotely . And, to c0ntrol the SWitching time of an external scanner,
scanner-advance output pulses are available at
the rear panel.
Either GPIB!tEEE-488, ' AS-2J2·C , or an 8·b!V
IS-bit parallel intertace option may be used tor
systems applications. The parallel interlaces will
work with DEC computer intertaces DAltC or
DAVIL
Math Power
The 8505A and 8506A Digital Mullimeters are
Fluke 's most advanced bench/system OMMs.
Both models excel in de accuracy, r8SOlullon ,
versatility and speed.
1lle 8506A uses a last thermal rms sensing
technique for measuring ac which very slgnifi·
cantly advances the state-o!·the·aJ1 for ac measurements using a system DMM. 1\ is several
times more accurate than the calculating type of
Ifue·rms convener and is unmatched by any
other OMM. Basic ae accuracy uncertainty is
reduced to 120 parts per million, 24 hours 101
trequencies from 40 Hz to 20 kHz . Thai approximates the accuracy you can expect using traditional thermal trans/af techniques that typiCally
take several minutes for each measurement.
Shon term slabiiTy is 25 ppm. AooJracy is speC1lied f rom 10Hz 10 1 MHz and non-sinusoidal
waveforms having crest factors as high as 8 to t
can be measured with lull90·day accuracy.

The 8506A and 8505A are conlroMed by an
intemal microprocessor and have built in malh
power to add, subtract, multiply. and divide as
weU as store and compare numerical inlorma·
tion . Each measurement may be made a part of
a calculation before being displayed or recorded.
Slored HI andtor LO lim~ values may be repeat·
edly compared 10 measured values 10 determine
out'oHolerance cooditlons, HI. LO, or PASS
indications may appear directly in the display,
The highest and lowest values in a series 01
measurements may be stored and later displayed. And measurements may aJl be In terms
of ::: deviations Irom a stored "oNset" value . In
general. anycatcufation is possible based all the

8505A & 8506A
8506A & 850SA Differences
The 8505A is Fluke' s lowest cost OMM having
top de accuracy, resolution, aJ'ld speed. Two
options for measuring ae voltage arA available.
either a n ae average-sensing, rms-indicating
option (-01) lor sinewaves or an ae lrue-rms
option (-09A) for either sinewaves or non-sinusOidal wavelorms_ An option for measuring current (-03) and an option tor measuring resistance (-02A) are also available for the 850SA.
For measuring ae cu rrent , an ae voltage option
(·01 or 09A) must also be installed. An 8505A.
when fully equipped, will measure de and ae
voltage, de and ae cu rre nt. and resista nce.
The 8506A and 850 5A have identical de
measurement ca pabilities bu t the 8506A requires no option tor measuring acvoltage. Stateof-the-art ac voltage measurement capabilities
are built in. An option for measuring de current
may be installed (-03) or an option fo r measuring
resistance may be installed (-02A). but not both
at the same time. Any external dc re terence
voltage up to 40 vol ts that is applied at the rear
panel may be compared and the relative values
d isplayed as a ratio. The same intertace options
are available for Ihe 8S06A as lor the 8S0SA.

RS-232 Interface Option (--OS)
This interiace is a bit serial asynchronous inter·
face providing either voltage or 20 mA current
loop level signals. The interiace allows selection
01 baud rate lrom 50 to 9600. either one Of two
stop bits, and odd or even parity. Up to 40 ASCII
character readings per second are possible with
Option ·06, No handshakes are provided.
Bit·Paraliellnterface Option (--07A)
Permits you to connect the instrument to DEC
PDPII minicomputer interlaces (DRIIC and
DRVll ). The interface permits either 8· or 16·bit
parallel ASCII translers or 8· or t6·bit parallel
binary transfers. In the binary mode the instru·
ment is capable 01 up to 500 readings per sec·
ond.
