Passover is right around the corner.
Our Seder on the second night is
promising to be a scrumptious
success. If you haven’t made your
reservations, times a wasting.

10th and our Duck race on May
29th. WE NEED YOUR HELP. We
need all types of volunteers and
merchandise for the yard sale and
please buy and sell Duck Tickets.
You will notice when you come to
Temple, the new spring plantings and
freshening of the gardens, Thanks to
Bruce Barenbaum, Santos and
everyone else who helped.
Condolences to Jerry Meyer on the
loss of his beloved wife Jackie, who
was our Minyanaires president. If
anyone is interested in serving in that
position and comes to the Minyans,
please let me know.
Congrats to our Rabbi for being
approved for a contract extension
hired by the congregation. As our
fiscal year is coming to a close with
only a few months to go, let me
remind everyone that we all have to
pull together to make our Temple a
better place.

“In the spring a young man’s thoughts turn lightly to love…” those
words written by Alfred Lord Tennyson could just as easily be
applied to Judaism. In the spring, Judaism turns to love. As we
have been studying in my Monday morning class the underlying
theme of Passover is God’s love of Israel. The redemption of the
Israelites from Egypt is a reflection of that love. It occurred
b’chodesh haaviv – in the first month of spring. Seven weeks later
we have Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks, which celebrates God’s
love of Israel by giving us the Torah. On Passover, we read the Song of Songs, an
allegory on the love between God and Israel; on Shavuot we read the Book of Ruth,
the story of the love between Ruth and Naomi, her mother in law, and Ruth’s desire
to follow her and adopt her religion. It is not insignificant that Ruth is the
grandmother of King David.
Here at Temple Israel, spring has been greeted with new enthusiasm, new
beginnings and a feeling of hope. Thanks to the initiative of Bruce and Paula
Barenbaum, the foyer has been redecorated with the intention of making the space
both more attractive and more conducive to a welcoming congregation. It seems to
be working; because this year for Purim we had a greater turnout than last. In the
evening we read an abbreviated Megillat Esther and had lots of fun drowning out
Haman’s name with our groggers. The next morning (Sunday), we read the entire
Megillah with lots of laughter and noise. Both events were followed by the
opportunity to relax and socialize after services. On Sunday morning, the service
was followed by a delicious brunch prepared by Joan Meres and Ellen Klein. Thanks
to the incredible work led by Dr. Sharon Goldish, with help from Barbara Glickstein,
Millie Kinbar, Morrisa McCoy, Joan Meres and Deena Stein, the hamentashen were
absolutely delicious. (When you come to the Duck Race on May 29th, if they don’t
sell out before then, you will have a chance to taste them again!) Our Community
Seder on April 19th will be another fun filled opportunity for all of us to share a
memorable, religiously significant occasion together. Our exodus from Egypt and
our formation as a people that has lasted over 2500 years is definitely an event to
be celebrated by services followed by a Seder.
On June 7th at night, we continue the Jewish tradition of honoring the giving of the
Torah at Mount Sinai by beginning the Shavuot holiday with short services and then
an evening of study called Tikkun Leyl Shavuot. There is nothing more traditionally
Jewish than an evening of study followed by food; in this case, cheesecake. So mark
your calendars and plan to join us on June 7th.
Keep the Jewish love of learning and the spirit of Temple Israel growing!

Sisterhood activities are winding down and I want to take
this opportunity to thank the team that held it together this
year. You all know I’m famous for what I like to call “team

Thank you, Amy Boswell, for being my right-hand
treasurer, financial secretary, on call for the kitchen, and
taking charge and completing our yearbook this year,
including the great cover.
Thank you Joan Meres, Ellen Klein and Sharon Goldish for
preparing the onegs and kiddushes all year.
All of us in Sisterhood give a special thank you to “Joanie”
for all of her help throughout the year. She is the glue that
keeps the temple together.
Thank you, Midge Solomon, for all your support and input
as our Fellowship Vice President and helping in the kitchen
whenever called upon.
Lastly, thanks to all our members who supported us.
Without all of you, we could not have had a successful
year. I wish you all good health and a great summer.

you put together for us, including this very last one by
Robert Moore, who advised us on safety and hurricane
awareness. He was very knowledgeable and a great
speaker.
We will sadly miss the friends who have departed. They will
be remembered.
This May, we will be installing a new board. Please give
them all of your support. Sisterhood is a strong arm of the
temple, they need our support.

Disaster Planning Guide
At the Sisterhood General meeting held in March,
Mr. Robert Moore, with the Volusia County Division
of Emergency Management presented the group with
valuable information on how to plan for a hurricane
or other natural disaster.

Office Notes…
I hope you had a chance to see the
beautiful new furniture recently added to the lobby, and the
new landscaping out front the Temple. Thank you so much
to Paula & Bruce Barenbaum for adding a springtime
“spark” to Temple Israel. You are both very much
appreciated.
If you look up the meaning of “loyal”, you will come up
with words like: faithful, devoted, dedicated and constant.
Now, look up “fan” and what do you find? – devotee,
supporter, follower – two words that have a lot in common.
If you’re loval, you’re faithful, devoted, constant and
dedicated. And if you’re a fan, you’re devoted, supportive
and a true follower.
By now, you should have received the information for the
Temple Yearbook/Directory. Please be sure to send the
information back as soon as possible. We would like to
encourage everyone to sell at least one ad, whether it’s
your favorite restaurant, barber, hair salon, doctor, etc.
Everyone knows someone who would be willing to place
an ad in our directory.
Do you see where I’m going with this? I’d like to think that
all members of Temple Israel are loyal fans. Devoted to
their synagogue, constant in their attendance, dedicated to
the work that has to be done. True supporters of
fundraisers, faithful volunteers, and realistic enough to
know that not every season may be a “winning season.” Be
a fan of Temple Israel. Don’t give up on your team!
As I’m writing this, the sports world is in the midst of
“March Madness” – I do not like to watch basketball and I
do not have a favorite basketball team. I save my “loyalty”
for the Yankees! Just about everyone is a fan of a particular
team or player. And being a fan means you stick with your

Dear Congregants:
Sunday, April 10th @ 7:00 p.m. the movie Defiance will be shown at Temple Beth-El brought to you by the
Federation. The daughter of Tuvia Bielsky, Ruth Bielsky, will be our guest. The movie depicts three brothers
who escaped the Nazis into the woods and they built an elaborate village for rescued Jews. They saved 1,500
men, women and children and now their offsprings total over 20,000. We were fortunate to learn that one of the
Bielsky Holocaust survivors, Miriam Taub, will be visiting this area and she will be introduced. She and the
other Holocaust survivors will light candles in memory of the 6 million that perished. Please join us in this
Holocaust observance. This is free and open to the public.
We thank Cantor Zev Sonnenstein of Temple Beth-El who had a successful fundraiser concert for the Jerry
Doliner Food Bank and everyone who attended said they had a good time.
We also want to thank Lynne Ritter and her committee for having a very unique fantastic Pre-Passover
Chocolate Seder for the Women’s Division of the Federation. It was absolutely gorgeous. Funds for this event
went to the Passover Appeal. Unfortunately, we are helping 97 Jewish families who are having a hard time and
we at the Federation are glad we can help them in their time of need.
Three times a year, this Federation doesn’t forget our seniors and we invite them to a holiday lunch. On April
13, a pre-passover seder will be held at Indigo Banquet Center. Entertainment and the traditions of the holiday
will be observed for this event. This entails a lot of work, but the joy it gives the seniors makes it all worth while.
We need your help. For our local school supply project, we are blessed with receiving a one
time matching grant up to $25,000. This means that for every dollar that we receive, it will
be matched up to $25,000.
We are still very busy assisting families receive the basics to exist like food, clothing, etc.
But we also realize that if families can't afford the basics, they won't be able to purchase
quality backpacks filled with school supplies for their children. Youths who go to school
with the proper tools to learn enables them in the long run to become productive citizens. During these 15 years,
we have helped over 47,000 youths. One backpack with supplies retails for $80.00 and the cost to us wholesale
is $25.00. Please find it in your heart to help these kids.
Please help at least one economically disadvantaged local student be a recipient of this program. It is a big
mitzvah. Send your checks to:

A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO PASSOVER
MECHIRAT CHAMETZ – SELLING THE CHAMETZ
No matter how carefully we shop before Passover, often there is some chametz (non-Passover food) left
in our homes. While Jewish tradition stresses the need to remove all leavened food from our homes, its
wanton destruction is forbidden. Therefore, we transfer our ownership of the chametz to the rabbi who
sells it to a non-Jew for the duration of Passover. Please fill out the attached form and mail to the
synagogue office.
BEDIKAT CHAMETZ – THE SEARCH FOR LEAVEN
BEE-UR CHAMETZ – DESTROYING THE LEAVEN
Removal of the leaven includes an interesting formal ceremony. On Sunday evening, April 17th
immediately after supper, the head of the household should gather the family together and conduct the
ceremony in a solemn way. Accompanied by the family, he/she proceeds to search for leaven. The
rooms are darkened and with a candle in hand, they search for and gather together small pieces of
bread which have been carefully placed in strategic places in advance. These crumbs are to be burned
on Monday, April 18th before 12:00pm. The short prayers, which are said as part of these ceremonies
may be found at the beginning of the Haggadah.
SIYUM BECHOROT – CEREMONY OF THE FIRST-BORN
The deep compassion of our faith staggers the imagination. Notwithstanding our long history of
suffering and persecution, we have always shown great compassion even towards those who would
destroy us. This is particularly evident in the Passover ceremonies.
On the day immediately preceding Passover, first-born Jews, young and old alike, are required to fast
as a sign of mourning for the Egyptian first-born who died in order that we might attain our freedom.
Such a gesture of sympathy towards enemies is without parallel in the annals of religion.
This obligation to fast can be suspended by attending a special service and ceremony of Talmud study
on Monday, April 18th at 8:30am. The entire service and ceremony will be concluded by 9:30am. and
will be followed by a light breakfast.

Protocol in the Sanctuary
6. Not leaving a Holy Book on the floor.
7. If a Holy Book should fall onto the floor, we pick it up and
kiss it as a sign of respect.
We remind everyone about the following traditional guidelines
for showing respect in the Sanctuary:
1. No eating, drinking, or chewing gum, even when no
service is in progress.
8. When called up to the Torah, we touch the Torah with our
Tallit, then kiss the Tallit, and then proceed to chant the
blessing at the Torah.
2. No running from one place to another – parents please
monitor your younger children.
9. Not sitting in Cantor’s chair or Rabbi’s chair unless invited
to do so.
3. Standing when the Ark is open.
10. Unless you are a doctor on call, please do not bring a cell
phone into the sanctuary.
4. No leaving a Holy Book (prayer book or Chumash) open
as we take a break from the service.
We thank you for abiding by these guidelines. You will discover
that these guidelines will enhance your spiritual experience and
enjoyment of the Synagogue.

PERFORM A MITZVAH – JOIN THE CHEVRA KADISHA
Just as there is a Jewish way of life, there is a Jewish way of death. Judaism requires us to treat every human being with dignity,
respect, and modesty, because we were created in the image of God. It is toward this goal that we strive at the moment of greatest
grief. Dignity and simplicity are the core of a proper Jewish burial.
In Daytona Beach, as in other Jewish communities, we have a dedicated group of men and women known as the Chevra Kadesha
or Sacred Society who properly prepare the deceased for burial by performing a Tahara, the physical and spiritual cleansing of the
individual. It is important for our Jewish community to know that this group is available to all, and we accept the responsibility for
this final kindness to the deceased. Our members give of their time and energy with genuine generosity. There are no rewards other
than that which comes from having done a mitzvah.
Our numbers are few. The old are getting older, transportation and other difficulties abound, the young work, people schedule their
travels, or are busy with personal commitments. Death comes unexpectedly. We must be there for them.
We need many volunteers, more hands to assist in this, the greatest mitzvah of all. Call me, it will be on the spot training.
