Many people remember Chuck Colson,
who recently went home to be with the
Lord, as one of the “hatchet men” who
attacked the enemies of President Richard Nixon and was convicted and imprisoned for his misdeeds, but to me,
Chuck Colson is a hero. Following his
conviction and sentencing to Federal
prison, he trusted Christ as his Savior.
Shortly after his release from prison he
felt the call of God on his life to establish
a Christian ministry to inmates called
Prison Fellowship. This ministry grew
and eventually spread around the world
into over one hundred countries. His
daily radio broadcast and timely Biblical messages on world events were of
great inspiration to hundreds of thousands of people. Here at FCS Mr. Arnold often forwarded his daily message,
Breakpoint, to the high school faculty.
His testimony of how God used him,
even though in the eyes of many he will
always be a villain, is inspiring. To me,
he indeed is a hero.
A hero is someone who we look up to
and want to emulate, someone whose
life represents something we would like
to be. Of course our heroes can represent something good which will add
value and meaning to our lives, or they
can epitomize wrong values and poor
judgment. In today’s world, heroes are
sports stars, movie idols, and musicians, probably not unlike our childhood
heroes in the past. In the battle for the
minds and hearts of our students, Satan
often uses the desire to have heroes as
a tool to keep our young people from following Him.
One of the qualities of a true hero is
someone who will not compromise their
beliefs, no matter what the cost or circumstances. This criteria fits every category from the pro athlete to the movie
star. Unfortunately, many of the high
profile “stars” have their price, and are
more than willing to sell out to whatever
will benefit them, even if it means choosing immoral or harmful ways. The same
is true in the spiritual influence that im-
pacts our students. Who
can they look to who will not
compromise their beliefs,
who will stand true to God in
the worst of circumstances,
no matter what the cost?

Bible is full of examples of individuals
who had such a price. Esau, David, Judas and Peter sold out their beliefs for
very little in return, and paid the price.
This generation of young people today,
perhaps more than ever before, faces
the pressure to compromise their faith,
to go along with the crowd, to apply the
truths of God’s Word only when they are
beneficial, and to remain silent when
those around them are violating God’s
truths. They desperately need heroes.
In the Bible when Nebuchadnezzar
invaded Palestine and took the most
promising young male Hebrews back to
Babylon as hostages, four young men
distinguished themselves. They faced
the same temptations our kids face today. They faced Satan’s lie that there
would be no harm in being like the society around them and participating in
the sinful activities of the world by trying
to convince them that since everyone
else was doing it, it couldn’t be so bad.
Daniel and his friends developed moral
and spiritual convictions before the testing started. They knew, according to
the scripture they had been taught, that
it was forbidden to worship other gods
and they were willing to die for their convictions regardless of the consequences. They believed that God could rescue
them from the fiery furnace, but they
also considered the possibility that God
might not choose to do so. Theirs was
an example of true faith and surely is a
group of true heroes that can be looked
up to.

opportunity to demonstrate integrity and faithfulness in our own lives,
even when faced with the temptation to
compromise, which can serve as an example to them. We can also be assured

we keep our faith in Him He will always
be with us. God is looking for heroes of
the faith, like Chuck Colson. Wouldn’t it
be great if He found him or her right here
within the student body of FCS?

LITERARY FAIR
Congratulations to the middle school students for a great
year!!! This year’s literary fair was held on Monday, May
14th, 2012. The theme was Dr. Seuss. The fair was a success!!!
To begin, the students and their families looked at the exhibits (which was the work the students did throughout the
year), ate snacks, played games, and took pictures with the
drawings of Dr. Seuss characters. Awards were given for
creativity in writing and good work in grammar, vocabulary,
and reading. The highlight of the night was when the special
guest, Christina Diaz Gonzalez, author of The Red Umbrella
and A Thunderous Whisper, spoke and answered questions
that a panel of middle school students had prepared in advance. The event ended with an author-signing session.
Mrs. Diaz Gonzalez signed her book, The Red Umbrella and
bookmarks of A Thunderous Whisper. The book will be out
on October 9th, 2012.

Teach Your Child to Be a Good Friend
Proverbs 17:17 “A friend loveth at all times.”
In order to have a friend you have to know how to be one. • Get honest. Friends can be honest with each other without

adult teaches children how to develop friendships.
Dr. Fred Frankel points out in his book Good Friends Are
Hard To Find that, “Children who had chronic difficulties
making and keeping friends were more likely to drop out of
school and have drug problems in adolescence.”
Friendships teach children social skills that they need in order to fit into society. Research shows that children who lack
friends can have emotional problems later in life.
• Empathy. The younger children learn how to understand
the feelings and respect the point of view of others the easier it will be for them to get along with their friends. We can
help our children understand this by talking to them about
different situations they experience in school or while playing with other children.
Ask your child how he or she thinks another child felt when
they were treated unfairly? Have your child describe what he
or she thinks that child felt, and how they would want others
to react if they found themselves in that situation.
It is difficult for parents to watch their children get hurt by
friends, but dealing with conflict is inevitable.
It is essential that children learn how to communicate, cooperate and solve problems in order to be able to develop and
maintain relationships.
Parents should avoid getting involved in children’s conflicts.
Always let them try to solve it on their own. Step in only if
your child is in physical danger.
The following is a list of skills parents can teach their children
that will help to promote children’s friendships.
It does not matter how many friends your child has; what is
important is that he or she is comfortable and happy with the
ones they have.
• Be respectful of others. Children learn this by the way their
parents treat them. When we are being firm, but kind and
respectful we are teaching are children how to set limits and
follow rules.
• Friends share. At a very young age children need to learn
how to share their toys and how to be happy for their
friends.
• Friends trust each other. A good friend does not gossip or
divulge information that was given to them in trust. The only
time this rule should be broken is when a friend is in physical harm. Then the child should seek guidance from a trusted adult.

FLORIDA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL’S TECHNOLOGY
The coming year provides us with yet another opportunity
to provide the excellence in Christian education the community has come to expect. Because FCS is committed
to providing our students with the best possible resources
which will help them to be fully prepared for a technologically advanced culture, we will begin a technology initiative,
to be known as FCSMART, which will revolutionize the delivery of our academic program in the classroom. In doing
so, we are committing to preparing students to be literate,
responsible members of a technologically advanced world.
We will immerse our students into a technologically rich instructional environment, so that they can become effective
users and communicators of information in the technological
culture in which they live. This initiative will include the use
of Smart Boards in every classroom, expanded availability
of Mac Book Air laptops and Nook tablets through our media center, equipping and training our faculty in the use of
the technology available to them and their students, and an
iPad initiative which will place an iPad in the hands of every
middle school and high school student. We will release the
details of FCSMART during the coming school year detailing
how faculty and students will utilize technology in our classrooms, this year and going forward in the future.

The Florida Christian Middle School Girls Softball team for
the second time in two years won the South Florida Middle
School Conference Championship. They went into the one
day tournament listed as the number two seed after losing
twice in the regular season to the number one seed Ransom Everglades. In the first game we were paired to play
the number three seed of Carrollton School, we won the
game with the score of 14-3. In the Championship game we
played Ransom Everglades in which our bats came alive,
with not one player striking out. We won the game with the
score of 13-5. The girls put a lot of hard work into the season and the championship was well deserved. The Championship Most Valuable Player was Madison Irvine and we
also had two players named to the All-Tournament Team,
Victoria Alonso and Megan Rodriguez.
Gabriel Carreira
Gabriel has been a source of joy to have in class from the
first day of school. Gabriel’s calm and gentle spirit endear
him to teachers and students alike. He is dependable in
every way, from his promptness in attendance to his conscientious completion of all homework assignments. His work
ethic is exemplary, wisely using his time, and doing all things
as “unto the Lord.” This has brought him the distinction of

Nicole stands out in a crowd, but not in a typical way. You
can spot her out because she is helpful to all and is always
looking for ways where she can serve others. She asks
teachers to hold things, get the door, and is polite and friendly to everyone. Nicole’s kindness is exemplified in her sunny
disposition which can be counted on the minute she walks
into a room. Nicole is honest and hard-working and she
consistently demonstrates great commitment to the quality

ART GALLERY
Esther Jordan & Cristina Parodi, Art Department
Florida Christian School’s Art Department presented the
15th annual Art Gallery on Friday, April 13, 2012. The theme
was “God Still Speaks”. This is a very well attended event
and this year’s turnout was outstanding.
Students and
their families came to enjoy and admire the artists’ work.
1st through 12th grade had works on display that evening.
The night was a celebration of talent; from the artwork to the
service and food prepared by Sherry’s Sizzling Sides (our
own Home Economics department directed by Mrs. Brod),
to the worship music performed by the group “In Him”. This
year’s graduating class was honored and recognized publicly for their outstanding talents. Many pieces were available
for sale and proud parents and other art collectors bought
pieces in support of the Vander Wal Art Foundation. The
Art Gallery was a testimony to the God-given talent so many
students here at FCS have. A special thanks to all who participated, from beginning to end; we are so blessed and look
forward to next year!

ELEMENTARY NEWS
Maria Lehnhard, Elementary Principal
The month of May brought celebrations of honor for our teachers and parents. The first week of May was Teacher Appreciation
Week in which teachers received a treat every day; breakfast, luncheon, massages, ice cream socials, dessert crepes and gifts. It
was a great week and much deserved. I want to especially thank
the room mothers who took care of classes, gave special gifts and
made it possible for the teachers to enjoy their luncheon and other
activities.
Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are also special days that we set
aside to honor our mothers and fathers and tell them how much
we appreciate and love them. We count it a privilege to be able to
honor our parents here at school with breakfast and gifts from the
children. In every celebration there were tears of joy as the teachers read books about a mother’s love, showed videos of the children and shared devotionals. Just recently, we have had three faculty members experience the passing of their mother. Even though
this is a sorrowful time, they are also rejoicing in knowing that these
wonderful moms have entered the gates of glory and they are with
the Lord. What a great Mother’s Day gift. We will remember them
in prayer. Elementary classes also made special gifts and cards.
The Bible says that God is Love, and moms and dads reflect that
love and blessings that the Lord has given them.
The K4 classes honored both parents Saturday, May 19th with a
luncheon at the West Campus. The celebration started with the
children singing songs for their parents. One song that always
brings tears is “Fingerprints”. It shows us how precious those little
“fingerprints” are that are left on the walls…children grow so quickly
that we want to appreciate each moment when they are little and
depend on us. Mrs. Lehnhard read two special books; My Mom is
Great and My Dad is Great. Some dads were picked to act out the
dad that was described in the book. They were fantastic and good
sports. The picnic ended with a great lunch and fellowship. We
thank the Dads for making it so much fun and the Moms for their
part in making this picnic a success.
The 3rd and 4th grade Patriotic Program was presented May 11th
at 7:30 PM. The children did a terrific job, playing their recorders
and singing songs of the past. They proclaimed our Christian
Heritage and our motto “In God We Trust”. Let’s never forget our
Christian Heritage and the writers of the greatest document ever,
our Constitution, which involved God in prayer and the principles
of God’s word. Please pray for our country, “without ceasing”, as
we are facing a presidential election this year. May God illumine,
guide and give us the wisdom to cast the vote according to His
precepts.

Class of 2012 College Acceptances
Dear Parents,
As the school year comes to a close and the class of 2012
graduates, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the
college preparation process that has taken place to bring the
seniors to their graduation day! Oftentimes parents ask me
the question: “Are FCS students well-prepared for college
admission?” This is an important question to raise and one
that I answer often on an individual basis for parents. In this
final issue of the Declaration Newsletter, I would like to address this question and provide some reasons why I would
answer that query with a resounding yes!
The college admission process is a complex one and each
college has its own individual review process. However,
generally speaking, colleges are “holistic” in their approach,
meaning that students are assessed based on a series of
factors including: academic grades, high school course work,
school and extra-curricular involvement, volunteer service,
and SAT or ACT test performance. Furthermore, college
admission offices review each student within the framework
of the school they attend. Thus, high school transcripts are
reviewed based on the curriculum available to students at
their individual high school.
With the above admissions process in mind are FCS students being reviewed positively by the colleges of their
choices? Overall, FCS seniors who applied to universities
that matched their academic profile have been very successful. The admission percentage rates to individual universities for FCS seniors either meet or exceed the acceptance rate of these institutions. Review of the data during
the past four years shows that the majority of FCS students
have applied to: the University of Miami, Florida International University, Florida State University, Miami Dade Honors College, the University of Florida and the University of
Central Florida. Of these universities, the acceptance rate
for FCS students has fallen within or exceeded the overall
percentages of admitted students to these universities. To
give a few examples, FSU’s 2011 acceptance profile for all
incoming freshman applicants was an average of 45%-48%.
Our acceptance rate for the 2012 graduating class was at
47%. The University of Miami’s 2011 acceptance rate was
at 38%. The acceptance rate for the FCS class of 2012 was
61%, with 17 of 28 applicants receiving offers of admission.
Of those students, 9 were offered academic scholarships to
attend the university.
Although the majority of FCS students prefer to attend Florida universities, many have received offers of admissions
to out of state institutions. The class of 2012 has been accepted to outstanding universities such as: Baylor University, American University, Boston University, Drexel University, University of Chicago, Vanderbilt University, University
of Notre Dame, Texas Christian University, and Texas A&M
University. Thus, both in and out of state, FCS students are
being accepted to the universities and colleges they wish to
attend. Individual student discipline and commitment to the
process is pivotal, but for those students who make wise

academic choices throughout high school, they can feel confident that they will be reviewed favorably by the universities
of their choice. As a school, we are also committed to providing all of our high school students with the tools they need
to transition to higher education.
As I close, I would like to commend the Class of 2012 for
all of their hard work and dedication during their high school
years. I extend my heart-felt congratulations and pray that
God will continue to guide and direct all of their future endeavors.

On Saturday April 28, 2012 in support of 6 year old Justin
Brigman, Mrs. Padron’s 5K class along with members of the
Key Club, and The National Junior Honor Society participated in the Florida Edition of The National Hemophilia Walk.
The walk was held at Jungle Island.
Team “Justincredibles” raised over $4,300.00. A grand total
of $88,000.00 was raised to bring both awareness and research to the bleeding disorder community. A special thanks
to Mrs. Padron, Mrs. Quinlan, Mrs. Delgado and TEKNO for
helping make this event a huge success.
Mrs. Quinlan would like to thank the 8th grade students who
sponsored her walk.

Congratulations to the Florida Christian School Women’s Chorus for earning straight superiors at the Florida Vocal Association State Choral Music Performance Assessment on May 1, 2012. The assessments were held at Palm Beach Atlantic
University in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Florida Christian Honors Women’s Ensemble also earned superior ratings in
both the popular and serious categories. The Florida Christian SATB Chorus earned an Excellent Rating. Five vocal soloists
also earned superior ratings.

who score very high on the Stanford Achievement Test.
Duke University has a Talent Search Program which identifies these students and asks them to take either the college
SAT or ACT during their 7th grade year. The students who
score well on the college tests are then recognized for their

SANCTUARY OF MOSES
Garrett Wicks, FCS sophomore, coordinated, with the assistance of Coach Dan Pruessner, a 3 on 3 basketball tournament to benefit the Sanctuary of Moses. Sanctuary of
Moses is a non-profit organization to provide assistance and
education to Benin West Africa residents to help prevent
child trafficking and child slavery. The tournament was held
on April 21, 2012 and raised approximately $600. The tournament was won by the team of Luis Garcia, Matt Collazo,
Alex Sosa and “Laz” Fernandez. Coach Steve Byers, Coach
Laz and Alex Sosa assisted in running the tournament.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWS
The National Honor Society partnered with Touching Miami with
Love this year. They collected over
500 toys for the TML Christmas
Store and also hosted their Easter
Celebration. The additional $1,800
that were raised, will be donated to
TML to sponsor a summer fieldtrip
for the children in the program.

The bookstore will be open, August 6-10 and
August 13-15, from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and
1:00-3:00 p.m. for the purchase of textbooks
(if specified on your schedule information
papers), planners, P.E. Uniforms, locks, Bibles
and parking registration packets for the 20122013 school year.
Books not available for purchase through Follett.
com (direct link available at www.floridachristian.org) may be purchased at the bookstore.
Students will need to bring their schedule with
them in order to purchase books.
