States Attorney
Opens Art Contest
A Note From
A. Alvarez
Substance
abuse
plagues our communities
in
numerous
ways.
Whether it is street violence caused by drug turf
wars, traffic accidents
caused by those driving
under the influence or
missed work or school
days from the affects of
use, it has the potential to
directly affect every one
of us.
Education about the
consequences of substance abuse needs to
start early. Many schools
offer awareness and prevention programs either
through health class curriculum or by inviting
guest speakers, such as
representatives from the
State’s Attorney’s Community Outreach Unit, to
talk to students about the
dangers of drugs.
As parents, we need to
set a positive example for
our children and keep the
$65.00 Per Year By Mail in U.S.
15c Per Copy at Newsstands
lines of communication
open and honest about
drug use.
We should encourage
children to get involved in
other activities that will
keep them occupied and
make it less likely that
they will experiment with
drugs and alcohol.
The State’s Attorney’s
Office holds an annual
art contest where middle
school
students
are
encouraged to create
posters demonstrating
healthy and positive
alternatives to drug use.
Thirteen posters are chosen from the hundreds of
entries we receive and
then featured in the next
year’s calendar.
The contest for the
2014
calendar
was
recently announced and
the entry deadline is
March 29th. I look forward to this event as I’m
always amazed at the creativity and talent that is
displayed by our young
contestants!
For more information
on the contest, visit our
website: www. statesattorney.org.

MPC Promotes
Flooding Solutions
The
Metropolitan
Planning Council which
forges innovative solutions, bringing together
government, industry and
community leaders has
set forth an ambitious
2013 policy agenda focused on five regional outcomes: Vibrant neighborhoods and a competitive
regional economy; Responsible use of Chicago’s
water assets; A transportation network that
serves people and the
economy; Innovative financing that unlocks regional growth and Quality
homes in attractive communities.
Rain is a free resource,
but it becomes a costly
nuisance for communities

and property owners
when it overflows sewers,
flood streets, and ruins
basements. Part of the
problem comes from more
frequent and intense
storms due to climate
change. Aging infrastructure can’t manage such
large volumes of rain.
MPC is researching
and advocating for appropriate revenue streams to
fund necessary investments; and working with
communities to explore
“green”
infrastructure
strategies, such as rain
barrels, rain gardens,
green roofs, permeable
paving and other inexpensive ways to contain rain
where it falls.

“Participants will submit designs for a new program to educate adults,
teens and liquor retailers
on the consequences of
underage drinking.”
For contest guidelines,
instructions and submission procedures visit
