Thanksgiving
Trumps Black
Friday for Deals
Report by Associated Press
NEW YORK — Thanksgiving could
be the best day to shop all year.
An analysis of sales data and
store circulars by two research firms
contradicts conventional wisdom that
Black Friday is when shoppers can
get the most and biggest sales of the
year.
Turns out, shoppers will find
more discounted items in stores
that are open on Thanksgiving. For
example, there are a total of 86
laptops and tablets deeply discounted
as door buster deals at Best Buy,
Wal-Mart and others on the holiday
compared with just nine on Black
Friday, according to an analysis of
promotions for The Associated Press
by researcher MarketTrack.
And on the Web, discounts will
be deeper on the holiday. Online
prices on Thanksgiving are expected
to be about 24 percent cheaper
compared with 23 percent on Black
Friday and 20 percent on Cyber
Monday, according to Adobe, which
tracks data on 4,500 retail web sites.
The data is the latest proof that
retailers are slowly redefining the
Black Friday tradition. It’s been
the biggest shopping day of the
year for years, mostly because it’s
traditionally when retailers pull out
their best sales events. But in the
last few years, retailers

(AP) — Late at
night, the two
convicted sex offenders exchanged
text messages debating whether to
kill their next victim or spare the life
of the pretty, young woman they had

Window Washer Fights for Life After 11-Story Fall
Report by
Kristin J. Bender
SAN
FRANCISCO
(AP) — A
58-year-old window washer who
fell 11 stories from a building onto a
moving car is “fighting for his life”
and opens his eyes when relatives
speak to him, his family said.
The man’s name and hometown
have not been released.
San Francisco General Hospital
released a statement from his family,
who asked to not be identified.
“We are amazed that he fell
from such a high distance and still
survived. Landing on the car really
helped, and we are so thankful for
that,” the statement said.
Police said the man was moving
equipment on the roof of a bank
building in San Francisco’s financial
district and not on a window-washing
platform when he fell at 10 a.m.
Friday.
“He is a stubborn, strong man, and
he is fighting for his life. He has had
several surgeries and is still in critical
condition, but doing a little better,”
the statement says. “We would also
like to thank San Francisco General
Hospital and all the doctors that never
left his side. They have exceeded
anything we could have hoped for
him.”
In the statement, the family
thanked a nurse and firefighters who
helped him.
“This is a hard time for our
family, and we ask for privacy. We
appreciate everyone’s concern and
hope to give another update when he
is doing better,” the statement said.
The man, who has a wife and
three daughters, remains in critical
condition but is doing better than
doctors expected, according to the
statement.
Many came forward to help the
man when he fell. But it was not
clear Friday if people are coming
forward with cash donations or if a
bank account has been set up to help
his family. Hospital spokeswoman
Rachael Kagan said she was not
aware of such an account.
No one else was injured, including
the driver of the car the man fell on.
The man was working for
Concord, California-based Century
Window Cleaning, said Peter Melton,
a spokesman for the California state
Division of Occupational Safety and
Health. A company official declined
comment Tuesday.
The company was cited for one
serious violation and three other
violations in 2008, one of them
related to instructing windowcleaning employees in the proper
use of all equipment provided to
them, and supervising the use of
the equipment and safety devices to
insure that safe working practices
are observed, according to federal
records. The company was fined more
than $6,500, though the fine was
eventually reduced to about $2,700.

Joey Chestnut Devours Turkey to
Win Eating Contest
Los Angeles Freeway Sign
Unveiled with Typo
MASHANTUCKET, Conn. — Competitive eater Joey
Chestnut has won a turkey-eating contest in Connecticut,
setting a record by devouring an entire bird.
Ten contestants vied to see who could eat the most of
a 20-pound turkey in a competition Saturday at Foxwoods
Resort Casino.
Chestnut ate 9.35 pounds of meat off the bone in 10
minutes. According to Major League Eating, the food
equivalent of the NFL, he bested the previous record,
which was held by Sonya Thomas, who ate 5.25 pounds
of turkey in November 2011.
Chestnut, a San Jose, California, resident who turns
31 on Tuesday, is ranked the top competitive eater in the
world.
He took home a $5,000 check after stuffing his face
with turkey. The remainder of the $10,000 purse was
divided among other contestants.
LOS ANGELES — No one noticed the mistake until the
morning after the sign was installed above Interstate 710
in Southern California.
A subcontractor had misspelled Olympic Boulevard
with an “I’’ in place of the “Y.”
The large green exit sign was covered with a tarp and
eventually removed but not before drivers snapped and
tweeted photographs of the mega-typo earlier this month.
Caltrans spokeswoman Kelly Markham tells the
Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1vb4P8T ) that the
subcontractor will pay for a new sign.
The sign was one of many improvements underway on
the freeway as part of a pavement rehabilitation project.
Iowa Woman Locked Up
After Locked Out of Home
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Police say an Iowa woman who
was locked out of her apartment has been locked up after
officers who helped her regain entry found pot plants and
drug paraphernalia inside.
Iowa City police say 19-year-old Jailin Turner is
charged with possession of a controlled substance and
other crimes. Jail records showed she was in custody on
Monday. It’s unclear whether she has an attorney.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports the officers were
sent to investigate a report early Friday morning about a
woman yelling and banging on an apartment window. She
told them she’d lost her keys.
The officers said in the complaint that when
firefighters broke into the apartment, two bongs were in
plain view. Officials also said they found a scale, potted
marijuana plants and grow lights.
City’s ‘Ugly’ Christmas Tree
Prompts Public Outcry
READING, Pa. — A Christmas tree that might make
Charlie Brown think twice is getting kicked to the curb
a little early after residents of a Pennsylvania town
complained it was too ugly.
Reading’s (REH’-dingz) spindly 50-foot spruce drew
the ire of residents who said it was ruining their holiday
spirit.
Now a group led by the city council president is
raising money to buy and decorate a more impressive
replacement. The current tree is topped with a lighted
pretzel, a nod to the area’s many bakeries.
The puny pine was a last-minute stand-in taken from a
city park. The city had planned to get its tree from a farm,
but the owner wouldn’t let the crews drive on the wet
ground when they went to pick it up.
Officials are hoping to have a do-over tree lighting
ceremony next weekend.

Final Victim
(Continued from page 1)
of the crimes by an Anaheim police detective who says Gordon confessed to killing the
women during a 13 ½ hour interview after his arrest in April.
Starting in October 2013, Gordon would pick up the women in his car while Cano hid in
the back seat and then overpowered him when they got in. The two took the women behind
an Anaheim paint and body shop where Gordon and Cano camped out and raped them, Det.
Julissa Trapp told the grand jury.
Cano strangled the women and Gordon punched them in the stomach “to get the air
out faster,” she said. At one point, he grew enraged when one of the victims noticed his
electronic anklet, she said.
“He ultimately made a statement that once he started, he couldn’t stop,” Trapp said.
The grand jury returned four rape and murder indictments against Gordon and Cano. A
fifth victim described by Gordon has never been identified.
The men both pleaded not guilty. Cano’s attorney, Houman Fakhimi, and Gordon’s
attorney, Denise Gragg, did not return calls and emails.
Gordon told Trapp that he didn’t want to kill the last woman, 21-year-old Jarrae
Nykkole Estepp, because she was beautiful, but when she refused to stay, he decided that
she had to die, too.
Estepp’s naked body was found on a conveyor belt at a recycling plant — a discovery
that would lead police to link her death to the missing women and ultimately help
investigators solve all four cases.
A fingerprint lifted from a caulking tube found in trash near Estepp’s body led
investigators to a window installer who worked in the industrial area where authorities say
the suspects disposed of their victims in a trash bin.
Detectives then searched a database of sex offenders wearing tracking devices and
found that Cano had been at the locations where all four women disappeared at the times
they vanished and also near the bin.
They collected Cano’s DNA from a water bottle and discarded gum and honed in on
Gordon as a second suspect after a search of Cano’s cellphone records showed he texted
with Gordon constantly.
DNA samples from Estepp’s body matched Cano and Gordon’s genetic material.
Police believe Cano and Gordon have known each other since at least 2010, when Cano
cut off his GPS device and fled to Alabama, where he was arrested with Gordon.
Two years later, in 2012, they again snipped off their monitoring devices and boarded
a Greyhound bus to Las Vegas using fake names before being arrested two weeks later by
federal agents.
Cano and Gordon were registered sex offenders after being convicted in separate cases
of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14. Gordon was convicted in 1992 and also
has a 2002 kidnapping conviction, while Cano’s conviction dates back to 2008.
Police searched extensively for the other victims’ bodies at landfills but never found
them.
Nobel Prize for DNA Discovery Going to Auction
Report by Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — The 1962 Nobel Prize James Watson won for his role in the
discovery of the structure of DNA is going on the auction block.
The auctioneer says the gold medal could bring $2.5 million to $3.5 million on Dec. 4.
Christie’s says it is the first Nobel medal to be offered at auction by a living recipient.
Watson made the 1953 discovery with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins.
He says part of the proceeds will go to the University of Chicago, Clare College
Cambridge, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Long Island Land Trust and other charities.
The auction also includes several Watson papers. Handwritten notes for his acceptance
speech are estimated at $300,000 to $400,000. Crick’s Nobel medal sold at Heritage
Auctions for $2.2 million last year. He died in 2004.
Thanksgiving Deals
(Continued from page 1)
like the Gap, Target and Toys R Us have started opening their
stores and offering holiday discounts on Thanksgiving to better
compete with online rivals.
“I was surprised, but it really shifted one day,” said Tamara
Gaffney, principal analyst at Adobe, which is based in San
Jose, California.
Shoppers already are noticing the deals on Thanksgiving.
Corey Grassell, 34, of Appleton, Wisconsin, said he plans
to shop for deals on Thanksgiving and bypass Black Friday.
That’s after he grabbed bargains last year on the holiday,
including a washer-dryer combination at Sears for about $800,
a 50 percent discount.
“I feel guilty for going out on Thanksgiving, but the deals
are so much more attractive to me than on Black Friday,” he
says.
But some industry watchers fear others won’t shop
on Thanksgiving, choosing to keep the day sacred. Those
who wait instead to shop on Black Friday could wind up
being disappointed with the leftover deals, they say. In fact,
according to Deloitte Research’s recent survey of shoppers,
about two-thirds say they’re not motivated to go out to stores
Thanksgiving because it’s important to be with family and
friends.
“Shoppers could be disappointed and find that the hot items
on their list are not in stock on Black Friday because of the
early push by retailers,” says Traci Gregorski, MarketTrack’s
vice president of marketing.
She says she’s conducting a survey of shoppers after the
holiday shopping weekend to see how retailers fared. “We
want to get shoppers’ perception of these deals,” she says.
Most big retailers acknowledge that they’re starting to offer
deals on Thanksgiving that previously were reserved for Black
Friday.
Jeff Haydock, a spokesman at Best Buy, the nation’s
largest consumer electronics chain, said the best deals become
available Thanksgiving when its doors open at 5 p.m. For
example, one of Best Buy’s Thanksgiving specials is a $899
55-inch LED Smart TV, the lowest price it has ever offered on
a Samsung ultra-high definition TV of this size. That will be
available on Friday —if supplies last.
“Naturally, more of the deals are being pulled into
Thursday because our stores are open,” says Haydock.
Brian Hanover, a spokesman at Sears, which is opening
at 6 p.m. Thursday, also says Thanksgiving specials spill into
Black Friday. But the quantities for the 1,000 door busters are
limited. They include Nordic Track treadmills for $699.99,
or an $800 discount, and a 36 percent savings on a Whirlpool
laundry machine, regularly priced at $549.99.
“It probably behooves the customer to shop earlier on
Thanksgiving,” he says.
For its part, Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, says it’s
spreading out discounts online and in the store. But Gregorski,
of MarketTrack’s says its “evident” in Wal-Mart’s circular that
“the best deals are on Thanksgiving.”
To be sure, for its two sales events on Thanksgiving,
Wal-Mart devotes 36 pages of its circular to discounted TVs,
computers and other items. On Black Friday? Wal-Mart has
four pages of deals.

Agreement: LA Jails
to Improve Wheelchair
Access
LOS ANGELES — A federal judge has given initial
approval to an agreement that requires the Los Angeles
County Sheriff’s Department to improve conditions in its
jails for inmates using wheelchairs and others with mobility impairments.
Monday’s preliminary approval of a 23-page settlement agreement with the
ACLU of Southern California comes six years after attorneys filed the class-action
suit alleging discrimination and violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act
and the Eighth and 14th amendments.
Now former jail inmates and people who can arguably claim to be future inmates
can submit objections to the ACLU through Jan. 12. Objectors may appear before
the court at a March 23 hearing and be allowed to
testify before the agreement is finalized.
Improvements include equal access to jail
programming, more wheelchair-accessible cells
and showers, and that wheelchairs are provided
when needed. The agreement also creates an
Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator
specifically for inmate issues who will interact
with people in the jails as well as their family
members.
The Sheriff’s Department did not immediately
provide comment. The law enforcement agency
has denied the allegations in the complaint, but it
is already making changes as required under the
agreement.
The department is constructing more mobilityimpaired accessible jail cells, more than doubling the number from 200 to 450,
with a great number being built in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, ACLU
staff attorney Jessica Price said. Grab bars are also being added throughout the jail
facilities, she said.
There is also a new complaint process through the chief physician in the jails
so that if any deputy requires an inmate to get out of their wheelchair, there is the
option of a secondary review to ensure medical issues are part of the decision, Price
said.
The complaint detailed stories of inmates who were held in the inmate-reception
center for three days with no access to a wheelchair-accessible bathroom. Inmates
soiled themselves and had to wait a long time to get a change of clothes. Inmates
who wanted to shower in the jails often couldn’t access it with their wheelchairs and
needed other inmates to carry them in, Price said.
“If you needed a walker or crutches or cane and you went to county jail, you
were screwed,” Price said.
Price said that because there weren’t enough wheelchairs, inmates were ordered
out of theirs to provide it to others. Those who didn’t do so were sent to “the
hole,” or solitary confinement. And wheelchairs that were in use often didn’t have
functional brakes or weren’t well maintained, she said.
The agreement requires the department to maintain the wheelchairs and make
sure they all have brakes.

Bank Teller Suspected of Stealing
from Customers
HUNTINGTON BEACH — Orange County authorities say a
23-year-old bank teller has been arrested on suspicion of stealing
hundreds of thousands of dollars from elderly bank customers.
The Orange County Register reported Sunday that Jake Chih
Wei Cheng could face charges including embezzlement and money
laundering.
The arrest on Friday occurred about a year after Huntington
Beach detectives began investigating.
An elderly man reported told police he was defrauded of almost
$200,000 by a teller who befriended him at a Huntington Beach
Wells Fargo Bank branch.
Investigators say Cheng is suspected of forging temporary
checks from the victim’s account over the course of a year.
Investigators also suspect he took more than $40,000 from
another person’s account after being transferred to a San Clemente
branch.
It wasn’t immediately known if Cheng has an attorney.
OC Traffic Stop Turns Up Assault
Rifles, Ammo
NEWPORT BEACH — A routine traffic stop in Orange County
ended with an officer arresting two people and seizing seven
automatic rifles and a large cache of ammunition.
The Orange County Register reported Wednesday that the
Dodge Caravan was pulled over last week in Newport Beach
because it had expired tags.
During the stop, the officer determined that 42-year-old Andrew
John Cardiel Jr. was driving on a suspended license. His passenger,
30-year-old Heather Magun Gurule, was on probation.
Police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella says officers uncovered
seven AK-47 assault rifles, 16 magazines and more than 350 rounds
of ammunition.
She says all of the guns were modified to fire in fully automatic
mode and one had been reported stolen in Georgia.
Police also found drug paraphernalia.
The two face several weapons and drugs charges.
Uber driver Stabbed, Robbed in LA
LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police arrested a female suspect
and searched for a male suspect in the robbery and stabbing of a
driver for the car-booking service Uber.
Officers found the victim before dawn Tuesday in the VermontSlauson neighborhood with stab wounds to his face and neck.
Officer Drake Madison tells the Los Angeles Times that the
male driver is expected to recover. The driver told investigators a
man and woman robbed him and fled.
Officers later arrested a woman suspected in the assault and
robbery. They are still searching for a man they believe is connected
to the attack.
Madison says it is unclear whether the man and woman were
passengers who requested the Uber driver. Uber says it is looking
into the incident and will work with investigators.

No. 9 UCLA Eager to Overcome
Struggles vs Stanford
A 6-5 team
is all that
stands
between
No. 9 UCLA and the Pac-12 title
game, but Stanford is no average
team.
Well, no average defense,
anyway.
The outstanding play of
the Cardinal defense has been
overshadowed by the team’s
offensive shortcomings, but the
Bruins are well aware of the
challenge they face on Friday at the
Rose Bowl in their regular-season
finale.
“They just play football,”
quarterback Brett Hundley said.
“Big, physical team and they get at
it.”
Stanford is allowing just 16.5
points and 290.2 yards per game,
ranking seventh in the FBS in both
categories, despite the graduation
of several players that formed the
backbone of consecutive conference
champion and Rose Bowl teams.
That group held the explosive
UCLA spread offense to a total of
51 points in three meetings over the
previous two seasons, all Stanford
wins. Last season’s 24-10 loss at
Stanford was particularly ugly, with
UCLA held to 266 yards of total
offense and Hundley throwing two
interceptions and taking four sacks.
“We just have to play better,”
UCLA coach Jim Mora said of his
team’s Stanford struggles. “If that’s
the common thread, yeah, we have
to play better. We have to protect
the ball. We have to take care of our
quarterback.”
Hundley’s protection has
improved dramatically during
UCLA’s current five-game winning
streak, allowing eight sacks during
that span. Not coincidentally,
redshirt sophomore Conor
McDermott became the starting left
tackle after consecutive losses to
Article by

Associated Press
Utah and No. 3 Oregon in which
Hundley was dropped 12 times.
Factor in the dominant one-two
punch of Paul Perkins and Hundley
running the ball and the UCLA
offensive line is playing as well as it
has during Mora’s three seasons in
Westwood.
“Something happened after
that Oregon game for our team,”
Mora said. “If they want to say it
relieved the pressure, that’s fine. I
just feel like we refocused and gave
ourselves a break maybe. We’ve
been playing pretty good football
since then and getting better on a
weekly basis.”
One fewer day of preparation
might limit opportunities to continue
that improvement, but could come
with its own advantages. After
dismantling crosstown rival USC
38-20, UCLA had to immediately
transition to preparing for Stanford
rather than soaking in the admiration
following a dominant win.
“Our players recognize this is a
short week and we don’t have any
time to spare,” Mora said. “I thought
they came out with tremendous
focus and I appreciate that maturity
to put a big win behind them and
move on to the next challenge.”
That challenge is all about a
Stanford defense that is among the
best in the nation, even if no one has
noticed.
And while Mora wouldn’t rank
where Stanford compares to other
defenses his team has played this
season, his praise and admiration for
the Cardinal may have revealed the
answer.
“I just look at what they do
and they are a very good defense,”
Mora said. “They are solid, they
are physical. They play with their
shoulders square. They are good
tacklers and disciplined. We’re
going to have to be very precise in
everything that we do in order to get
yards against them.”

Immigrants Wait, Hope, Plan
for Obama Order
Immigrants
in the
country
illegally
already are flooding attorneys’
offices with calls to see if they can
qualify under President Barack
Obama’s yet-to-be-announced
plan to shield as many as 5 million
immigrants from deportation.
Obama said he’ll reveal the
long-awaited order on Thursday.
Alex Galvez, an immigration lawyer
in Los Angeles, said he’s going to
need to add phone lines to keep up
with the demand. Orange County,
California-based immigration lawyer
Annaluisa Padilla said she’s getting
twice as many calls as usual since
buzz intensified over the plan, which
would also grant the immigrants
work permits.
“It’s like the golden ticket,” she
said. “Everybody who is calling my
office is asking how can I get a work
permit under Obama’s program? I
am like, there is no Obama program
yet.”
Obama is expected to take
executive action to protect many of
the estimated 11 million people in
the country illegally from deportation
after Congress failed to pass an
immigration overhaul. Republicans
are vehemently opposed to the
president’s likely actions, with some
conservative members threatening to
pursue a government shutdown if he
follows through on his promises to
act on immigration before the end of
the year.
While Obama has yet to reveal
the details of his administrative
order, immigrant advocates are
gearing up to help millions determine
if they are eligible to apply and steer
them clear of fraudulent consultants
and so-called notarios, who have
been known to take immigrants’
money and promise to deliver even
when they don’t qualify for benefits.

Southern California are planning
workshops to inform community
members about the order, including
a 12,000-person forum at the Los
Angeles Convention Center in midDecember, said Jorge-Mario Cabrera,
a spokesman for the Coalition for
Humane Immigrant Rights of Los
Angeles.
The New Mexico Immigrant
Law Center is planning a to start
a text messaging system targeting
immigrants across the state,
especially those in rural areas where
legal services might not be easily
accessible. Immigrant advocates in
Florida are planning the same, and
will also start a hotline in English
and Spanish to keep community
members informed.
In New York, immigration
lawyers and nonprofits are preparing
to hold clinics to help screen
immigrants for the program.
Mayra Gallegos, a 33-year-old
mother of two and trained nurse, is
pinning her hopes on Obama’s plan.
She came from Mexico a decade ago
to join her husband, who has since
gotten a green card. Her younger son
was born here, and is an American.
But she and her elder son have not
been able to get their papers.
“What Obama is going to do,
if he does it, would really help me
and my son,” said Gallegos, who
hopes to find a job as a nurse should
she receive a work permit. “We’re
always watching to see if there’s any
news.”
But some advocates warned
immigrants not to get their hopes up
yet — especially with lawmakers
threatening to thwart Obama’s plan.
“What I am telling my families
to do is be prepared for war. We’re
going to see a legislative arm
do whatever they can to stop the
president,” said Jessica Dominguez,
an immigration attorney in Southern
California. “I am not going to let my
community be saddened again by
words. We need action.”

Anger at Ferguson Case
Base on Emotion, Evidence
Article by
Jesse Washington
Associated Press
Anger and despair swept
through many parts of
America after a Missouri
grand jury decided not to
indict Darren Wilson for killing Michael Brown.
What was behind the wave of emotion? Why do so
many refuse to accept the grand jurors’ choice not to
charge the white cop with a crime in the death of the
unarmed black teen? Why is there such disregard for the
new evidence released with the decision?
Interviews around the U.S. show that these roiling
emotions spring as much from America’s troubled racial
history — which in many eyes has drained the justice
system of legitimacy — as from a rational examination
of all the evidence.
For many people, this history is the inseparable
context for the 90 seconds of Brown and Wilson’s
fatal encounter — and a rationale for the fury that has
followed.
“It feels like the lynchings that happened in the last
century. Racial profiling is the 21st-century lynching of
black males. We need to call it what it is,” said Kevin
Powell, head of the BK Nation advocacy organization,
who has worked in Ferguson since Brown was killed in
August.
“I’m depressed and numb, even though I expected
the verdicts,” Powell said. “I don’t condone violence
in any form, but I certainly understand all the anger out
there. I’m very angry myself.”
Since the St. Louis County grand jury decision
was released Monday, the anger has manifested itself
in various ways across America: raucous protests in
several cities; sharp conversations at work and between
friends; raging on talk radio; impassioned comments on
social media. And, of course, the anger erupted into the
burning, looting and gunshots that wracked Ferguson for
hours on Monday night.
Many took issue with the way Prosecutor Bob
McCulloch chose to present and frame the evidence, or
with the shifting explanation of why Wilson first stopped
Brown. Others were upset that only three of the nine jury
members were black in a scenario that did not require
unanimity or permit the possibility of a hung jury.
Then there were the emotional reactions, and a
preexisting lack of confidence, for many, in the fairness
and integrity of the U.S. legal system.
“I’m very disappointed and angry,” said Shakealia
Finley, an economics teacher in Atlanta. “It’s a
miscarriage of justice.”
“More than anything, as a citizen of the United States
you want to feel you can rely on the justice system to
get it right,” she said. “I keep observing instances where
the justice system gets it wrong when it comes to the
black community. They find every kind of loophole and
technicality to find that the murderer will go free.”
Finley firmly believes that Wilson should have
waited for backup instead of chasing Brown after they
struggled inside the police cruiser. She does not believe
the testimony, from the officer and several eyewitnesses,
that Brown was advancing toward the officer when he
was shot.
“I don’t believe that he charged someone who had a
gun pointed at him,” she said. “No scenario in my mind
makes me think that. It just doesn’t make sense.”
Is Finley reacting rationally or emotionally?
“I think it’s both, and I think it’s OK to be both,”
Finley responded. “It’s OK to say this is another example
of black people in society are not afforded justice. I am
able to separate the fact that Mike Brown made a bad
decision in that situation. It still shouldn’t have cost him
his life.”
That idea was echoed by Malaika Adero, a book
editor in New York City. She said that Brown bore some
responsibility for what happened, and that police have
the right to defend themselves, “but still, there is nothing
to me about this case that justifies that young man
dying.”
“It’s part of a disturbing pattern that’s been going on
for a long time,” Adero said. “It’s heartbreaking because
of what it represents in the direction the country is going
in.”
Adero acknowledged that she had not read all the
grand jury evidence that had been released the night
before, including previously unheard witness accounts
said to support the officer’s story.
“I have a suspicion that (Wilson) is a criminal. More
important to me is that the police force is the criminal.
Police leadership is the criminal,” she said. “I don’t
know about Wilson. But I know that systematically there
are crimes being perpetuated by the state.”
“My outrage is not about Wilson,” Adero said. “It is
about the accountability of our law enforcement system.”
Jo Cabey, a fourth grade teacher from Blytheville,
Arkansas, drove to St. Louis early Tuesday with two
teaching colleagues. She said that Brown’s death long
ago came to represent much more than a single death of
a young black male.
“I’m frustrated and disappointed in this justice
system that says there’s liberty and justice for all. But
black males keep getting killed at the hands of people
who are supposed to protect us,” Cabey said.
So the anger springs from many elements, from
how the grand jury weighed points of law and pieces of
evidence to how an officer’s gunshots ended a young life
— and yet there’s more.
The case is bigger than simple guilt or innocence,
said Charles Gallagher, chair of the sociology
department at La Salle University in Philadelphia.
“That Officer Wilson was legally justified in shooting
Michael Brown is both beside the point and irrelevant
when it comes to understanding the triggers of civil
unrest,” Gallagher said in an email.

Report by Associated Press
3 LA Arrests in
Ferguson Protests
LOS ANGELES — Police Chief
Charlie Beck says only three people
were arrested in protests across Los
Angeles following the announcement
that a Missouri police officer would
not be indicted in the fatal shooting of
a young black man.
Beck said Tuesday there were
no injuries and no property damage
during hours-long demonstrations.
Police watched as protesters
marched through streets, blocked
intersections and entered freeways.
Beck says officers did fire foam rounds
to keep demonstrators from returning
to a freeway.
Beck says the three arrests were for
assaulting an officer, failure to disperse
and public drunkenness.
The demonstrators chanted “hands
up, don’t shoot” in memory of Michael
Brown, the 18-year-old shot to death
by a police officer Aug. 9 in Ferguson,
Missouri.
Beck says the LAPD will facilitate
further lawful protests.
“Justified or not, what the shooting
brought to light once again was a white
power structure (the police force, the
school board, city council, mayor)
treating blacks as second-class citizens.”
He said that, as a result of things
like racial profiling, inflated fines for
minor violations that made up a large
percentage of Ferguson’s budget, white
flight and declining education budgets,
“Michael Brown became a symbol of
simmering mistrust and racism.”
Which encouraged people to respond
as much to the symbolism of the grand
jury decision as the facts of it.
“We’re traumatized and hurt,” said
Powell, the activist. “It’s almost like
being part of a family where you are
forever outside of the house. You think
you got in the house because President
Obama is in the White House, you
have Oprah and other successful black
people, and then this happens. You
wonder: Are we ever going to be treated
as equals in this country?”
“We’re not asking for much,” he
said. “Just to be treated as citizens.
That’s it.”

Assistant US Attorney
Named to State High Court THE INFORMATION
IDEAS AND
INTERACTION
YOU NEED TO STAY AHEAD
OF THE CURVE.
In his effort
to diversify
the judicial
branch, Gov.
Jerry Brown on Monday nominated a
deputy assistant U.S. attorney general
to fill a vacant seat on the California
Supreme Court.
The governor selected Leondra
Kruger, a 38-year-old Los Angeles
native, to replace Associate Justice
Joyce Kennard, who retired earlier
this year.
If approved, Kruger would become
the second African-American woman
to serve on the high court.
“Leondra Kruger is a distinguished
lawyer and uncommon student of the
law,” the Democratic governor said
in announcing the nomination. “She
has won the respect of eminent jurists,
scholars and practitioners alike.”
It’s Brown’s third appointment to
the court this term.
Earlier this year, he nominated
Mariano-Florentino Cuellar, 42, a
Mexican-born Stanford law professor
to be an associate justice on the sevenmember court. In 2011, he appointed
University of California, Berkeley
law professor Goodwin Liu, 44,
after Republicans in the U.S. Senate
blocked his nomination to the 9th U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals.
Kruger serves in the legal counsel
office of the U.S. Department of
Justice. Previously, she was acting
principal deputy to the solicitor
general and argued 12 cases on behalf
of the federal government before the
U.S. Supreme Court.
“I am deeply honored by Gov.
Brown’s nomination,” Kruger said
in a statement provided by the
governor’s office. “I look forward
to returning home to California and,
if confirmed, serving the people of
California on our state’s highest
court.”
Kruger is a Democrat but that was
not a consideration in her nomination,
Brown spokesman Evan Westrup said.

that will enhance California’s stature
through its diversity, said Gerald
Uelmen, a Santa Clara University
law school professor. If approved,
Kruger will further bring down the
court’s average age and California
will have one black, one Hispanic and
three Asian justices. Four women will
serve.
It’s also Brown’s third selection
of someone without prior judicial
experience and will likely continue to
tilt the conservative-leaning court to
the left, he said.
“The only thing missing is some
California background,” Uelmen
said of Kruger. “I guess she grew up
in L.A. but has never practiced in
California and really has been out of
state for the last 20 years really.”
She worked briefly as an intern
at the U.S. Attorney’s Office Central
District of California in 1999 and as a
summer associate at Munger, Tolles &
Olson in 2000.
U.S. Attorney General Eric
Holder said he will miss working
with Kruger. He said she will be an
excellent and thoughtful Supreme
Court justice.
Kruger graduated from Yale Law
School, where she was editor-in-chief
of the Yale Law Journal. She earned
her bachelor’s degree from Harvard
University, where she graduated
magna cum laude and was a member
of Phi Beta Kappa.
Kruger’s nomination will
be submitted to the state bar’s
commission on judicial nominees
and must be confirmed by the
state Commission on Judicial
Appointments, comprised of the state
Supreme Court chief justice, the state
attorney general and the presiding
justice of the California Court of
Appeal.
The high court position pays

Immigration and the New Executive Order
United States immigration policy has long been a
complicated intersection of laws.
The Executive Branch heads the agency in control
of immigration, the Department of Homeland
Security. For the Legislative Branch, this creates a
gray area for who has authority. For the President,
Mandy Luper
UC Irvine Law Student it provides an opportunity to further influence
international foreign relations. But, more importantly,
the Supreme Court has repeatedly held the President has the power to
initiate deportation proceedings.
When it comes to immigration policy, Congress has the “power of
the purse,” meaning Congress controls funding for immigration related
issues. Additionally, once Congress passes a law on immigration,
the President is required to execute it, unless he believes it is
unconstitutional. Add the politics surrounding the Latino vote in
upcoming elections and immigration becomes the perfect storm of
competing power.
Because of the recent influx of immigrants claiming asylum
from Central American countries, immigration has become an even
more visible topic. Earlier this year, approximately 52,000 children
crossed the Texas-Mexican border, quickly overwhelming Border
Patrol resources. President Obama immediately requested 3.7 billion
dollars in aid to build more facilities and hire additional officers and
immigration judges.
During this week, President Obama issued numerous Executive
Orders to revamp the immigration system, forcing Congress’s hand to
act on comprehensive immigration reform. An Executive Order is an
order issued by the president and has the effect of law. However, a new
president can easily rescind an executive order, making this type of lawmaking a more short-term solution to long-term problems.
President Obama’s recent executive actions will affect
approximately four million individuals, which is why it is important we
take a closer look at its five primary initiatives:
(1) Expands the population eligible for Deferred Action for
Food/Fitness Activities

Childhood Arrivals to cover individuals who were under the age of 16
upon arrival to the U.S. and have been present since January 1, 2010.
This means individuals who meet the expanded eligibility criteria, can
request to defer deportation proceedings for three years, and receive
work authorization.
(2) Creates a new Deferred Action for Parental Accountability,
which allows parents of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents to
request deferment of deportation proceedings for three years and work
authorization, if they have been present since January 1, 2010.
(3) Expands the Provisional Unlawful Waiver program, which
allows spouses, children, and parents of U.S. citizens who unlawfully
accrued more than 180 days of unlawful presence, to more easily obtain
a waiver for those 180 days. This will decrease the length of time
individuals are separated from their families.
(4) Modernizes immigrant and nonimmigrant programs intended to
grow the economy and create jobs. The goal is to implement regulations
that will ensure the work visas are given where there is sufficient
demand and remove unnecessary restrictions and adjustment delays on
natural career progression and general job mobility.
(5) Promote the naturalization process by promoting citizenship
education and assessing the possibility of partial fee waivers.
Together, President Obama’s actions take into account the
executive’s existing prosecutorial discretion and focuses on addressing
one of the more important problems of immigration: the separation of
family members. The executive orders are unprecedented and will have
the more impact on immigration policy than orders issued since the
1980s.
House and Senate Republicans are currently denouncing the
policy reform, but have not yet come up with a legislative solution.
Congress’s main options are to sue the president, put in place their own
congressional immigration reforms, or refuse to fund the new programs.
The President gave Congress six months to respond before the
orders become effective in May 2015, effectively telling them that “it’s
your move.”

Weight Loss and Exercise,
According to Rick Ross
Rick Ross had two
Article by
Jonathan Landrum Jr. seizures in a single
Associated Press
day, sending him to the
hospital three years ago.
Health didn’t concern the 300-pound rapper
then, but he’s shed nearly 100 pounds in the
last seven months by eating healthier foods and
embracing a high-intensity workout plan.
Ross, 37, says he continues to work long hours
creating music, including his seventh album,
“Hood Billionaire,” released Monday. It’s the
second album Ross has put out this year after the
March release of “Mastermind,” which debuted at
No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
But in the middle of making music and
running his Maybach Music Group record label,
Ross has made his health a main priority.
And now, he believes if he can drop pounds,
you can, too. In an interview with The Associated
Press, the Grammy-nominated rap star offered tips
on how to lose weight.
NO SODA ON THE SIDE
Ross has given up a few things since changing his
lifestyle.
First, the rapper stopped drinking soda, unless
it’s diet. He also said it’s better to eat heavier
meals earlier in the day. As a result, he said he’s
able to burn calories faster.
“I used to eat big meals at 2 a.m. and base it
on my schedule,” he said. “But I don’t do that no
more.”
Ross said you should drink water throughout
the day. He also said to treat yourself when you
work hard.
“I just went to Prime 112 (in Miami) the other
night, and I had some fried Oreos and fried velvet
cake,” he said. “I treated myself. You wake up in
the morning, you might regret it. But you got to
get back to work.”
EVERY DAY HE’S HUSTLING
Ross credits a CrossFit program introduced to him
by Reebok last year — calling it “Ross Fit” —
with helping him lose weight. It’s a highly active
workout plan where Ross completes a series of
exercises within a 20-minute span, including
pushups, sit-ups, boxing, squat jumps and
Olympic-style weightlifting.
“CrossFit overall is more of an intense
workout,” he said. “So instead of doing 20
minutes on the treadmill, you’ll (do) a 20-minute
CrossFit workout and you’ll be not only building
your endurance, but also muscle simultaneously.”
Ross said the number of people who work out
with him has grown from four to 20, including
hitmaker DJ Khaled and producer E Class.
Enduring a tough workout isn’t foreign to
Ross, who played offensive line at Albany State
University in Georgia.
WINNING WITH WINGS
Ross stopped eating certain foods such as bread,
white rice and fish fillets, and began drinking
less alcohol. But he hasn’t eliminated one of his
favorite foods: lemon pepper wings.
The rapper, who owns nine Wingstop
franchises around the country, said he stops by
the restaurant at least twice a week when he’s in
town. He’s trying to keep a good balance, though,
by eating foods like Branzino and fruits such as
pears.
“I’m not under no stress of what I’m eating,”
he said. “There are no restrictions. I’m not trying
to make a particular weight. I’m just working out
and doing what’s best for Rozay.”
At the Box Office:
1. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1,” Lionsgate, $122 M, 1 week.

NOTICE OF PETITION TO
ADMINISTER ESTATE OF
DOMINGA PEREZ
CASE NO. 30-2014-00748128-PRPL-CJC.
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors,
contingent creditors, and persons who
may otherwise be interested in the will or
estate, or both, of DOMINGA PEREZ.
A Petition for Probate has been filed by
Rose Ann Peralta in the Superior Court
of California, County of Orange. The
Petition for Probate requests that Rose
Ann Peralta be appointed as personal
representative to administer the estate
of the decedent. THE PETITION
REQUESTS the decedent’s will and
codicils, if any, be admitted to probate.
The will and any codicils are available
for examination in the file kept by the
court. THE PETITION REQUESTS
AUTHORITY to administer the estate
under the Independent Administration
of Estates Act. (This authority will
allow the personal representative to take
many actions without obtaining court
approval. Before taking certain very
important actions, however, the personal
representative will be required to give
notice to interested persons unless they
have waived notice or consented to the
proposed action.) The independent
administration authority will be granted
unless an interested person files an
objection to the petition and shows good
cause why the court should not grant
authority. A hearing on the petition will
be held on Dec 4, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.
in Dept. No. C8 located at 700 Civic
Center Drive West, Santa Ana, CA
92701. If you object to the granting of
the petition, you should appear at the
hearing and state your objections or file
written objections with the court before
the hearing. Your appearance may be in
person or by your attorney. If you are a
creditor or a contingent creditor of the
decedent, you must file your claim with
the court and mail a copy to the personal
representative appointed by the court
within the later of either (1) four months
from the date of first issuance of letters
to a general personal representative, as
defined in section 58(b) of the California
Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the
date of mailing or personal delivery
to you of a notice under section 9052
of the California Probate Code. Other
California statutes and legal authority
may affect your rights as a creditor. You
may want to consult with an attorney
knowledgeable in California law. You
may examine the file kept by the court. If
you are a person interested in the estate,
you may file with the court a Request
for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the
filing of an inventory and appraisal of
estate assets or of any petition or account
as provided in Probate Code section
1250. A Request for Special Notice
form is available from the court clerk.
