Canadians embracing luxury travel,
Virtuoso sees 93% jump in five years
TORONTO — For years Canadian travellers were viewed as stingy, almost
inevitable when the dollar was worth
little more than 60 cents.
But times have changed and suppliers from 4- and 5-star hotel chains to
luxury cruise lines have noticed.
Not only has Canada recently surpassed the U.S. as having the most affluent middle class per capita in the world,
according to the New York Times, the
Canadian Tourism Commission’s (CTC)
most recent Travel Snapshot shows Canadians spent more than $30 billion on

a favourite in the Canadian market
travel in 2012, one of the highest per
capita expenditures in the world.
And the Canadian agency members
of Virtuoso, the best-known group of
agencies specializing in luxury travel,
have seen their sales soar.
Some 13 Canadian agencies are
part of the Virtuoso network, and in
the past year these agencies saw 12%
growth, and in the past five years,
they saw 93% growth, said Becky
Powell, Senior Vice-President, Global
Member Sales, who was in Toronto to
update media on Virtuoso.
It began in 1951 as a small co-op
of Mid-Western U.S. agencies. Now
Virtuoso has some US$12 billion in
buying power, more than 340 agency members with 600 locations in
20 countries worldwide and a brand
that’s become a powerhouse in the
luxury travel market.
With close to 9,000 travel advisors
across the globe, Virtuoso has member
agencies in the Americas, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand and, by the
end of 2014, Europe.
Virtuoso has “customized the Virtuoso experience for Canadian travellers,”
added Senior Vice-President for Virtuoso’s Consumer Group, David Kolner.

charts” at 140% growth, said Kolner),
Australia (59%), Mexico (35%), the UK
(30%), Turks & Caicos (23%), Jamaica
(23%), Cuba (19%), Italy (18%), the D.R.
(15%) and France (11%).
While these figures show big rates
of increase in travel to certain destinations, some of the base numbers for
those destinations were quite low to
begin with, said Kolner.
Members of Virtuoso’s executive team as well as several Toronto-area Virtuoso travel agents
attended a luncheon at the Shangri-La Hotel. Pictured here are (left to right): Wendy Davis,

Powell, Senior Vice-President, Global Member Sales, Virtuoso; Stephen Smith, Vice-President,

Both Kolner and Powell along with other members of the Virtuoso team, plus
several local Virtuoso agents, were part
of a media lunch in Toronto last week.

com website in October and Canadian agents along with their colleagues
worldwide are listed in the site Luxury
Travel Advisor Catalog, a search tool for
clients. Hotels, cruise lines and other
product get client ratings on the site,
and Virtuoso agents do too, with directives like ‘100% of 22 people recommended’ displayed next to an agent’s
profile. Clients can also post reviews of
each agent, and agents can respond.
Another tool on the site, called
Meet Your Advisor, acts as a filter for
would-be clients looking for a travel
agent, using travel preference questions about destinations and trip type
(e.g. honeymoon, family getaway, etc.)
to steer the business to the most appropriate agents.
Luxury clients are still travelling as
much as they ever did, but the 2008 recession had an impact on how those clients want to vacation, said Kolner. “Value
didn’t necessarily become the driver but
it is expected now,” he said. “That’s what
the recession taught us. Luxury travellers
expect to be treated a certain way.”

Travel for the 50+
Transat Discoveries perfect option for
‘Zoomers’ wanting adventure
by Kathryn Folliott
Transat Discoveries wants to remind
agents that the brand’s mix of escorted
tours, ‘Mini Discoveries’ and ‘Seaside
Discoveries’, are perfectly suited for the
50+ passenger looking for a small group
tour atmosphere to an exotic destination such as Asia, Africa, South America
or Eastern Europe and Scandinavia.
Transat Discoveries offers fully escorted tours with just about all the
services provided: international and domestic airfare, transportation by coach,
mini-bus, 4WD vehicle or even private
car, transfers, local English-speaking
guides, almost all highlight sightseeing
with very few optional excursions and
meals throughout, with some tours offering virtually every meal.
“This semi all-inclusive formula offers
clients absolute value,” says Dan Prior,
Sales Director, Ontario. “I receive feedback
from the public on a regular basis on how
much they appreciate not having to pay
out of pocket while on tour, and this is especially true for the 50+ or ‘Zoomer’ (i.e.
active Baby Boomer) clientele.”
The 50+ clientele of today are extremely savvy in terms of technology, and they do a lot of research so
they know the destination, adds Prior.
“We’re seeing a very well-travelled 50+
clientele and while they appreciate the
inclusions they also enjoy travelling in a
small group atmosphere,” he says.
While Transat Discoveries’ maximum
group size is 25 for most tours, some operate with a maximum of 16 in Europe.
For those 50+ clients who don’t travel
as part of a group, Transat Discoveries custom designs packages for clients
to not only the brochure destinations
but also destinations not listed in the
brochure. “We can tweak existing tours
for a customized experience for clients
wanting private tours or custom groups
as well as build packages right from the
ground up. Agents can work with our
FIT and groups departments to work on
getting a package that is right for their
client,” says Prior.
“I still believe that the pre-packaged escorted tours in the brochure are the easiest products for agents to be offering. We
have designed them to ensure clients get
the most out of their holidays.”

Gateways
International’s preand post-cruise
add-ons include hotel
accommodation, tours
With Gateways International’s pre- and
post-cruise packages, agents can customize add-on stays in cities including
Nice, Rome, Venice, Athens, Barcelona
and Istanbul with transfers, hotels and
tours as per their clients’ specifications.
Travel for the 50+
Prices start from $449 per person
including private transfer to and from
the pier/airport, two nights accommodation with breakfast daily and a classic
half-day tour.
“We build packages based on clients’
personal travel preferences and interests,” says Gateways International’s director, marketing and operations, Talia May.
“Specific travel dates can be accommodated no matter how short or long
the itinerary. Private transfers are always
included, hotel categories range from
three to five star and tours can either be
shared group tours, small group tours or
fully private tours with a personal guide.”
If clients are looking for off-the-beaten-track ideas, the team at Gateways International “loves to dream with them
and come up with unique tour ideas
and stops at special places, wherever
they may be,” adds May.
Hotels include the Hotel La Perouse
in Nice, Barroco Hotel in Rome and
UNA Hotel Venezia in Venice, all fourstar. The Athens property is the five-star
Electra Palace Hotel Athens.

Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun
Award-winning hotels just the start of
resort, attractions news in Riviera Maya
by Kathryn Folliott
Four hotels in Riviera Maya have received AAA’s Five Diamond Award,
which strengthens this destination’s
prestige. They are: Grand Velas Riviera
Maya, Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera
Cancún, Fairmont Mayakoba and Rosewood Mayakoba.
Grand Velas Riviera Maya received
this award for the third consecutive year
for its excellence and its high standards
of luxury and its world-class quality.
Meanwhile, Mexico’s largest cluster
of construction companies and beach
hotel developers, The Vidanta Group,
has started the construction of what
will be the Vidanta Theatre. With an investment of $20 million the aim is to be
the permanent host of what will be the
first Cirque du Soleil production outside of Las Vegas and Orlando. The goal
is to launch in November 2014.
The theatre will seat 600 people and
it will be adapted especially to develop
the Cirque du Soleil production. It will
also offer dining and other services.
In other hotel news, the opening
of the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya
brings the iconic Hard Rock brand to an
already highly popular destination, with
a multimillion dollar renovation to the
former Aventura Palace.
Miles away from the raucous bigresort lifestyle of Hard Rock, there’s
La Semilla, small boutique hotel located in the tourist centre of Playa
del Carmen. Each of its nine rooms
is a trip to the past, for furniture and
decorative items were purchased
at flea markets around Mexico and
carefully restored in order to become
useful and functional.
The nine rooms are divided in four
different categories: small rooms, standard rooms, rooms with a terrace and
suites with a terrace.
One of Riviera Maya’s most luxurious
properties, Rosewood Mayakoba, has
received the AAA Five Diamond Award
for the fifth consecutive year.
After establishing six years ago in
the Mexican Caribbean as a luxury retreat for upscale travellers worldwide,
Rosewood Mayakoba resort (operated by Rosewood Hotels & Resorts)
continues to set the standard in luxury hospitality in Mexico.
Another option, Hotel Soho Playa,
opened its doors earlier this year
with an eclectic, sophisticated, elegant and urban hotel offering, with
a boutique approach in the heart of
Playa del Carmen, a couple of blocks
from the beach and at steps away
from 5th Avenue.
Hotel Soho Playa’s swimming pool is located on the terrace with beautiful views
of the city and its restaurant offers healthy
dishes prepared with organic ingredients.
It’s a great venue for events, cocktail parties and weddings, says the Cozumel &
Riviera Maya Tourism Board.

In terms of things to do (besides relaxing on the beach, that is), The Xcaret
Group has debuted a new attraction,
Xoximilco, which pays homage to the
culture of central Mexico by providing
an opportunity to live a unique experience in the evening hours.
Xoximilco consists of a set of beautiful canals that one traverses onboard a
picturesque trajinera, one of the area’s
colourful boats, that provides an original and fun way to interact with family
and friends or with other tourists from
around the globe.
Xoximilco also offers the opportunity to experience an authentic Mexican
fiesta with more than 20 representative
culinary delights of Mexico, always accompanied by mariachi and different
sets of traditional live music from different parts of Mexico.
This new attraction is located five
minutes south of Cancun International
Airport and 35 minutes north of Playa
del Carmen.
There’s also Alltournative, opened
earlier this year at Jungle Maya Adventure Park for national and international
tourists travelling with their own car or
rental vehicle.
Alltournative visitors can opt for
three different entrance hours, 9 a.m.,
11 a.m. and 1 p.m., to see these natural
treasures. One of them is the main entrance to the largest underground river
system in the world.
Besides visiting these cenotes and
enjoying a typical Maya lunch, visitors
can rappel, zipline, snorkel in an underground river system explored and
recommended by National Geographic
Snorkeler and take a ride in a Unimog
Vehicle (Mercedes Benz 4x4).

Grecian Holidays tour caters to LGBT
market with gay-friendly destinations
By Kathryn Folliott
LGBT travellers are known for their
discerning tastes and appreciation
for the finer things in life. To cater to
their specific needs and preferences,
Grecian Holidays has introduced a
brand new tour that highlights some
of Greece’s most spectacular gayfriendly destinations, complete with
all the trimmings.
The nine-night ‘Ganymedes’ package spends three nights each in Athens,
Mykonos and Santorini. Travellers start
their holiday in the ancient city of Athens, known for its Old Quarter nestled
below the slopes of the Acropolis. To
add some much needed beach time to
the itinerary, Grecian Holidays follows
up with two of the world’s most romantic island destinations. With three
full days in both cosmopolitan Mykonos and magical Santorini, travellers will
enjoy plenty of R&R after the hustle and
bustle of Athens.
While in Mykonos, they can sign up
for a day trip to the Sacred Island of
Delos, sunbathe nude at Super Paradise, jet-ski at Kalafatis or windsurf at
Panormos. While in Santorini, must-do
activities include sailing to the volcano,
swimming in the hot sulphur springs
and soothing the skin with a mud bath.
“Greece has long been regarded as
a gay-friendly destination featuring a
wide array of accommodations and
services that appeal to all tastes and
preferences,” said John Andreopoulos,
President of Grecian Holidays. “Grecian
hospitality is unmatched in the world,
which is why LGBT travellers continue
to visit in droves. Our ‘Ganymedes’
package, with all its cultural and culinary highlights, will make them feel
right at home.”
Priced from $2,399 per person, double occupancy, ‘Ganymedes’ includes
accommodation in four-star Superior
hotels, half-day sightseeing tour in Ath-
ens, half-day Santorini volcano cruise,
ferry tickets between Piraeus-Mykonos,
Mykonos-Santorini and Santorini-Piraeus, entrance fees to sites, all transfers
as per itinerary, the services of local
representatives and hotel taxes, service
charges and VAT.
Grecian Holidays sources product directly from overseas, including top suppliers, hotels, coach operators, car rental companies and more. The company
has been organizing packages to Greece
and the Greek Islands for 30 years, and
is dedicated to providing quality tours
at competitive prices. Most itineraries
can be tailor made to suit all needs and
interests.
Grecian Holidays will work with
travel agents to customize gay- and lesbian-friendly trips to the Greek islands
that highlight destinations like Mykonos, which cater to a sophisticated gay
crowd.

HOW MANY CANADIAN
TRAVELLERS ARE FINDING
THEIR WAY TO SUNNY MEXICO
THESE DAYS AND WHAT’S YOUR
FORECAST FOR 2014?
Esponda: 2014 has been a terrific year
for Mexico. In the first three months of
2014, already 800,000 Canadians have
visited Mexico. This is 7% higher in
comparison with the same Q1 of 2013,
which is very good considering than
in the last five years that number has
already doubled.

AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER
OF BUYERS TO THE NUMBER
OF ATTENDEES. WHAT WERE
THE NUMBERS FROM CANADA
AND WHY IS THIS EVENT FAST
BECOMING AN ANNUAL MUSTATTEND FOR THE CANADIAN
TRAVEL TRADE?
Esponda: Mexico’s tourism marketplace,
TIANGUIS, was very well-attended by
Canadian companies with a record of 37
companies having a presence. In recent
years the level of specialization that the
business-appointment event gathers
has been consolidating. Today you are
able to find there any type of tourism

WHAT’S THE LATEST NEWS IN
TERMS OF NEW RESORTS?
Esponda: During Tianguis the

destinations. Those are Teotihuacan
north of Mexico City, Calakmuk in
Campeche, Palenque in Chiapas and
Chichen Itza in Yucatan. This means
that tourists will enjoy a comprehensive
experience in those destinations,
besides de archeological sites.
Today tourists only visit the sites

Canadians, who always care about

MEXICO IS ALREADY VERY WELLKNOWN FOR ITS BEACH PRODUCT.
BEYOND SUN-AND-SAND, WHAT
EMERGING NICHE MARKETS ARE
YOU SEEING?
Esponda: Indeed Mexico is today the
preferred beach destination, however
already many Canadians are combining
their experiences when visiting Mexico.
We have some stats that say that
from Nov. 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015.
All flights will be aboard Alitalia’s
Airbus A330 aircraft and will initially
(Nov. 1-Dec. 14) feature two classes
of service — Classica (economy) and
Magnifica (business) — with a third
class, Classica Plus (premium economy), available from Dec. 16 onwards.
This program complements ALBATours’ full range of product, which includes car rentals, escorted coach tours,
Mediterranean cruises and more.
40% of Canadian tourists already
embark on a tour to a natural,
archeological or historical site.
We embrace this trend as more and
more Canadians are venturing into the
Mexican local culture, the food and the
arts, which makes it unique to visit our
country.
We also see a strong interest in the
art and folk culture in places such as
San Miguel de Allende, Guadalajara
and Oaxaca. There’s also the
cosmopolitan urban and world-class
experience that Mexico City offers,
with some of the best restaurants in
the world, museums and shopping.

Since then, Canadian visitation has

Last year, the City welcomed an estimated 1,063,000 Canadian visitors, a

estimated $57.4 billion in economic impact and $38.7 billion in direct spending.
In addition, New York City generated

Marseille has been
transfomed into a
Mediterranean jewel
By Patrick Dineen
MARSEILLE, France — This ancient port
city, founded some 2,600 years ago by
the Greeks, shares the Mediterranean
coast with Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Nice
and Monte Carlo.
What it hasn’t shared with these chic
destinations is the aura of glamour,
sophistication and wealth that draws
many millions of visitors to these shores.
But Marseille has been reinventing itself and used its position as one of the
European Capitals of Culture for 2013
to complete the process.
Marseille has always had a spectacular setting and by adding two brand
new museums and shedding two lanes
of traffic to widen pedestrian-friendly
esplanades around the Old Port, it is attracting attention.
One British newspaper last year trumpeted: ‘Marseille’s Moment: France’s
Ugly Duckling Turns into a True Mediterranean Swan’.
This new Marseille also caught the attention of Air Transat and Transat Holidays. The sister companies have been
flying to Marseille-Provence airport
from Montreal for almost a decade and
last month started weekly service from
Toronto for the first time.
And service from Montreal has increased to four flights a week.
Provence is the second-most visited
region in France for Canadians, after
Paris, and Marseille-Provence airport
is a convenient gateway to area attractions such as Avignon, Nimes, Arles
and Aix-en-Provence and scenic villages
such as Roussillon and Gordes.
The airport is spending 120 million
euros in the next four years to improve
access by rail and bus and this includes
rail links to Avignon and Arles.
Another 120 million euros is being
spent to increase the terminal capacity
including a newly-opened lounge that
is available to Transat’s Club Class pas-
sengers with entrance available for 19
euros for others.
Last year saw Marseille join the rest of
the region as a major tourism generator
as it was the focus of the Culture Capital celebrations that united 97 towns
around this project.
The region underwent a major transformation with a total investment of
660 million euros involving many of
the world’s top architects such as Sir
Norman Foster, Rudy Ricciotti, Kengo
Kuma, Stefano Boeri, Jean Nouvel,
Frank Gehry, Massimiliano Fuksas and
Tadeshi Kawamata who designed a
range of new venues.
The Old Port is the heart of the city
and it has been redesigned by Sir Norman Foster and features a vast, sandstone esplanade free of parked cars and
incorporating a delicate and mirrored
sun shade for walkers.
Foster has also designed a series of
elegant club houses for the many sailing clubs based around the port, plus
careening areas fitted with cranes.
But one thing hasn’t changed. The local fishermen continue to sell their day’s
catch on the port every morning.
The city’s most famous dish is the fish
stew bouillabaisse and one of the best
places to try it is Le Miramar, just steps
from where the fish is sold in the Old Port.

Port is the new Musée des Civilisations
de l’Europe et de la Mediterranée (MuCEM) — a major new institution that
looks at the history of the entire Mediterranean world.
This modern structure is built into
the 17th century Fort Saint-Jean, combining the new and the old and linked
by a striking bridge.
Adjacent is another new museum
— the Musée Regards de Provence devoted to Provencal art. Over the past
couple of centuries, the colourful landscapes of this region have attracted artists from France and beyond.
Marseille’s tourism renaissance is bringing new accommodations as well. In
Le Panier district, once one of the city’s
poorest, the Hotel Dieu, a large 18th century hospital, has been transformed into a
5-star Intercontinental hotel.
Also in Le Panier is a former almshouse that now stages art exhibitions.
The Centre de la Vieille Charité, despite
its main purpose of serving the poor, is
a grand structure constructed between
1671 and 1749 in the Baroque style and
made up of arcaded galleries in three
storeys surrounding a space with a central chapel surmounted by a dome.
One of the most central places to stay
is Grand Hotel Beauvau Marseille Vieux
