Proposed Gibraltar border fee ‘illegal’
Tourism authority concerned by foreign minister talks this week...
P
lans to
introduce a
border fee
between Gibraltar
and Spain could
be illegal, its
tourism board has
suggested.
Reports from
the weekend
indicated that
Spain's foreign
minister Jose
Manuel GarciaMargallo said
the Spanish
government could
introduce a EUR50
(GBP43.40) fee
and close airspace
to delay flights as
tensions between
the British-owned
territory and Spain escalated.
It comes as Spain increased
border checks on the border this
weekend, leaving some drivers
waiting up to seven hours in the heat.
But a spokesperson from the
Gibraltar Tourist Board told Travel Daily
it was confident any move to introduce
a fee could be illegal.
In a statement, the spokesperson
said: "The Gibraltar Tourist Board is
always concerned with any external
factors that may affect tourism to
the Rock in a negative way. Like
all in Gibraltar this situation will be
monitored with interest but we are
confident that any attempt to introduce
a border fee would be illegal."
The increased checks are thought
to be in response to the construction
of an artificial reef by Gibraltar.
Although Spain has claimed the reef
impacts its boats and fisherman, it
denied that the checks were linked to
the situation and instead were put in
place to help prevent smuggling.
According to reports in UK
newspapers, the Foreign Office has
voiced concern over a recent interview
with Margallo where he declared “The
party is over” for friendly relations
between the two and revealed this

French tourism hit by recession

rance’s tourism
industry has
been the latest victim
of the country’s
recession – with
holiday bookings
down 4.5% on last
year, a figure which
was already 6%
down on 2011.
British
newspaper the
Times reported that
the tourism sector
generated around
EUR77 billion for the
country last year,
around 7% of national wealth, and
the government cannot afford for it to
spiral into decline.
France’s unemployment rate
currently sits at 10.2% and the
country’s president Francois Hollande
has cancelled his foreign holiday to
prove he is tackling the problem.
While a majority of Brits are
heading to cheaper destinations like
Spain and Greece, 52% of French
citizens have said they will not go
away this summer – a figure which
represents around 900,000 fewer
holidaymakers than last year. Click

Travellers rely on gadgets – survey
90% of holidaymakers “spend four hours a day” on gadgets...
T
ravellers are becoming
increasingly dependent on
gadgets to help them explore
the world and stay in touch with
home, a new survey has found.
The latest edition of Visa’s Global
Travel Intentions Study found that
the majority of people (80% of
respondents) now rate the phone
as their top technological travelling
accessory, ahead of the camera
(70%) and computer (54%).
The study also found that 65%
of global travellers now take a
smartphone with them, and that
internet capability (45%) is the top
consideration for travellers when
deciding which gadget to take,
ahead of size and weight.
Asian tourists were found to be
especially reliant on technology,
with 73% choosing to check-in
online while abroad and 77% using
the internet to provide updates and
share photos while on holiday.
A study by lastminute.com
revealed last week said 90% of
holidaymakers spend four hours a
day on technology devices while
away. A third are thought to post
regular holiday updates while 25%
said they will only stay in hotels
that have WiFi. “Whether it’s a
good distraction or not, the reality
is our customers are now always
connected – and they want this to
continue seamlessly when they are
abroad. We are finding with our hotel
partners it is no longer enough to
offer guests free Wifi, it is also about
the quality and speed of the internet
connection,” said Mark Maddock,
MD of lastminute.com UK.
However he encouraged
travellers to switch off more.
“We have connected travel with
technology since 1998 but would be
the first to say to customers – don’t
forget to switch off when you are on
holiday and open your eyes to where
you are in the world,” he added.
