MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER
Celebrate the Spirit!
St. Mary’s International School is here today because of many reasons,
one of which is the dedication and sacrifices made by the Brothers of
Christian Instruction. In 1951, Br. Poitras, Br. Dion and Br. Caron arrived
at Haneda Airport to find a Japan recovering from the effects of World
War II, and an increasing need for schools for the international
community. By 1954, more Brothers had arrived including Br. Isidore
Vachon who opened St. Mary’s International School in Yokohama. This
is an overly simplified description of the roots of the school, to help us
understand that the institution today is the result of many factors, one of
which is the Spirit of the founders which carries forward to today.
Students, parents and school staff made a concerted effort to establish a
Catholic international school for boys.
Move forward to 2016, and recall the high school and elementary school
graduation ceremonies and you will find the continuation of this spirit. As
summer 2016 begins, let us find time to reflect on the diverse and
meaningful history of our school. Find ways to effectively carry on the
traditions of the school, and to realize our mission: to Instruct, to Educate,
and to Impart Christian Values.
I sincerely wish all of you a restful summer, and look forward to the start of
the new school year in August. To those leaving the school, best wishes
for continuing success in all your endeavors.

Message from the SMA President
It is with a grateful heart that I pen this message for the final newsletter of the school year. I would like to thank Mr. Kagei,
advisor to the SMA Board, for his patience and valued advice. His door was always open and his input always greatly
appreciated. To the wonderful SMA Board Members, it has been an immense pleasure working with each and every one of
you. Your dedication and commitment to the task has resulted in another truly successful year for SMA. I am always
amazed at the talents and abilities of the parents both on the Board and of those who volunteer for SMA related events
throughout the year. It is this mixture of individual skills and cultural diversity that makes our school unique and when we
come together as one community to “Celebrate the Spirit”, the sky is our limit. Together we can do and have achieved so
much!
This team spirit was evident at the Carnival, one of our biggest fundraising events of the year. A very big thank you to
Carnival chairs, Mrs. Mineko Inoue and Mrs. Aya Iwamoto for your strategic planning and management of this extremely
popular event. A warm thank you also to the Raffle Chairs, Mrs. Nidarshi Fernando and Mrs. Urara Utagawa for a very
successful raffle. I take this opportunity to recognize the SMA Treasurers, Mrs. Rika Atobe and Mrs. Kiyomi Kunita, who
with their team of very capable ladies, counted money from dawn to dusk (well, almost!) Thank you very much!
A heartfelt thank you to the Room Parent Coordinators, Mrs. Bunsei Tanaka and Mrs. Kayako Pang, you helped coordinate
the High School and Elementary School graduations along with the respective committee chairs. Mrs. Sherry Hoshi and
Mrs. Motoko A’de Lima as the High School Committee Chair ensured that the families of the 2016 graduating class were
welcomed and that there was celebration in the air on May 28, 2016. Mrs. Shwe Yin Oo, Miwa Yamakawa and Moemi
Matsubayashi, the Elementary Graduation Committee Chairs worked hard to ensure that the Elementary School graduates
and their families feel happy and proud as the boys step into Middle School. Thank you, ladies!
No SMA event is possible without the assistance of the Main Office Staff, Ms. Suyama and Mr. Kubo and his maintenance
team. Their quiet and constant support was always delivered with a smile and nothing was too big a task. Thank you for
your patience and kind assistance.
It has also been a pleasure to work closely with the faculty members and administration. I have enjoyed the interaction with
the school at all levels and have gained much knowledge from this experience. Thank you for your understanding,
cooperation and continued presence at all of our events throughout the year.
To our valued donors, both individual and corporate, it is your selfless generosity that makes our events possible. Your
wonderful contributions have brought many smiles to the faces of the SMIS community members. I thank the SMA
Donation Chairs, Mrs. Caterina Tanaka and Mrs. Aileen Ishii for liaising with our valuable donors and for keeping the wheels
turning all year.
My deepest gratitude to SMA Vice President, Mrs. Therese Adachi and Secretary, Mrs. Mimy Chang for their continuous
support and the friendship that we developed during the past two years.
Although I step down as President, I hand over the reins to Mrs. Cristina Platzer with confidence, knowing that Cristina will
lead this team of amazing parents with the same passion and enthusiasm that has been motivating our Board members in
recent years. Thank you Cristina for accepting this role.
Lastly, we are looking to fill a few open positions for the SMA Board 2016-17. Please contact me at
[email protected] for more information.

High School Principal’s Message
Each year as I sit down to write my year end note I always find myself surprised that the
school year has come and gone, and I usually begin my note with “it seems like only
yesterday”. This year is no different.
Back in August, following the normal sleepless night before the first day of school, I
mentally reviewed the various situations and events that would unfold over the course of
the year. I can say with delight that it has been a wonderful year, one where my life has
once again been enriched by meeting and working with wonderful parents and staff. Of
course, school is really about the students and their learning and I have certainly enjoyed
my time getting to know our boys. Kicking off the year with the Freshmen trip, I quickly
realized that our students were a special group with a wide range of talents. Attending
numerous musical events, both choral and vocal, and observing the many art displays it
was obvious that our boys excelled in the fine arts. Cheering from the sidelines at athletic
competitions gave me exposure to our boys’ athletic prowess. Sitting in on classes showed
me that some top notch engagement in learning was occurring. Wrapping up the year
chaperoning the sophomore trip was a great way to get to know our rising juniors much
better. And, finally, attending the Prom proved to me that our boys are no longer boys; they
are young men, ready to move on and become leaders in the world beyond high school.
We certainly hope that they move forward applying what they have learned during their
tenure at St. Mary’s.
It never fails to amaze me that each year provides me with great memories and awesome
learning opportunities. As I wrap up my 34th year in education, I continue to learn and
delight in the learning of others. St. Mary’s is a special place and my thanks go out to the
entire community for a wonderful year. I am already looking forward to August!
Best wishes for a wonderful summer,
Simon Faulkner

Middle School Principal’s Message
Dear Parents,
It is that time of the year when I reflect on all that I am grateful for during the past school. This year in
particularly, I am grateful for the work that the teachers who are leaving the Middle School have done over
their cumulative 90+ year of experience to contribute to what the school has become because of their
expertise and wisdom.
Mr. Willis, Mrs. Striegl, Mr. Blair and Mr. Van Wylen epitomize what it means to live a life of commitment to
excellence and to meeting the educational needs of adolescent learners. Their presence will be missed in
so many ways but their good work will continue to benefit our students well into the future.
This group of Middle School students has collectively been the strongest group of students I have had as a
Middle School Principal. The 8th grade class has set the bar high for their own achievement and has been
great role models for the 6th and 7th graders. I am grateful for the students I have worked with this year and
for their focus on doing their best and I want to specifically thank the 8th graders for their good work and
great attitude.
The SMIS Middle School teachers continue to not only teach but also to inspire our students on a daily
basis. They fully understand that education is not about “filling a bucket but rather about lighting a fire” and
to do this takes a lot of hard work. I am grateful for the teachers with whom I work and for their efforts to
bring their “A Game” to school each day for the benefit of your sons.
Finally, I am grateful for the SMIS parent community and, more specifically, the SMA for their relentless
efforts to support administrators, teachers and students for providing the best possible education for your
sons. The school, in partnership with parents, is the strongest combination for providing the highest quality
education for your sons. “It takes a village” to provide a quality education and it is my feeling that we can,
indeed, “Celebrate the Spirit” of this perspective since it is alive and well at SMIS.
I trust that you will take time to rest and to relax this summer and also that you will find time to keep your
son’s mind engaged through adventure, reading, family activities, summer camps, fun, and conversation.
Best wishes to those students and families who are leaving SMIS and I look forward to seeing everyone
else in August.
Best regards and thanks for a great year.
Sincerely,
Dr. Langholz

Elementary School Principal’s Message
The past weeks of school have been quite busy, and the weeks to come promise to be a roller
coaster ride so buckle your seat belts! But after all the twists and turns, I know that the boys’ hard work
will pay off with excellent results when report cards go home on Thursday, June 2nd. The boys have
learned a great deal this year so let’s congratulate them for all their great work!
Again this year, I would ask that you encourage your son to participate in our Elementary School
Library’s “Awaken the Force—Read!” summer reading challenge. The boys are aiming for a grand
total of 600,000 pages this year so please have your son read, read, read and we will hopefully surpass
that number! Separate goals have been set for each grade level with RP-2 students expected to read
800 total pages and Grade 3 and 4 students expected to read 1000 total pages. What a great way for
your son to keep up his reading skills as well as foster his love for reading.
Your son can also join the “Star Wars Scene Photo Contest” wherein he can design a realistic
scene for his favorite Star Wars character, take a picture of it and send it in to the library. He should
email his Star Wars Scene Photo to [email protected] by August 27th to enter the contest. He should
include his name, grade, and current class in the email. Details about the contest can be found on the
ES Library website so please have your son participate and May The Reading Force Be With You!
This year’s theme has been Celebrate the Spirit, and we have certainly seen great school spirit
in the elementary school all year long. From Bingo to Carnival, from Fall Sports Day to Spring Sports
Day, from the Christmas Concert to the Spring Music Concert; indeed, from the first day of school in
August to the final day in June, the boys have lived each day to the fullest and have grown so much.
Thank you for your continued support of your son’s learning and of everything we do each day at school
to help him grow into the young man we wish him to become. Together we make it work and that truly
is a great reason to Celebrate. Thanks!
I always like to add that the school cannot accomplish its mission of forming young men who
are Knowledgeable, Globally Aware, Effective Communicators, Critical and Creative Thinkers and Of
Good Character without your help. The teamwork we create with you is fundamental to our ability to
make sure that each child in our care receives everything he needs to fully realize his potential and to
find success in all he does. Thank you for all your continued support and for helping us give your son
the excellent educational experience he deserves.
And finally, to those who are leaving us at the end of this year, we wish you every success in
your new school and we hope you take many fond memories of St. Mary’s with you as you leave. For
all those coming back to St. Mary’s in August, we look forward to seeing you return refreshed and ready
to meet the challenges of the 2016-2017 school year. Happy holidays and God bless you all!

From Room Parent Coordinators
Thank you to the entire school community for supporting all the events through out the school year. We
were very successful in making it a fun and productive year for our boys. Thank you to the families who
donated to the Bingo Bake Sale, Staff Appreciation Lunch and the Ice Cream Bash. We would like to
especially recognize the Room Parents from each elementary class for their hard work this year. Without
your help, it would not have been possible to have the class parties that all the boys enjoyed so much.
Thank you also for your support in our other activities like the Bingo Bake Sale, Staff Appreciation Lunch,
and the Elementary School Graduation preparations. Thank you, to the Middle School and High School
liaisons for their support with the Staff Appreciation Lunch and various school gatherings. We are very
grateful to the school administration, office staff, and Mr. Kubo and his team for their help and support with

Japanese Classes with Brother Michel
The SMA is very grateful to Brother Michel for
instructing a small group of parents every Wednesday
morning in the Japanese language. We thank Brother
Michel for creating an opportunity for parents to learn
the language of the host country. Although considered
a challenging language to learn, Brother Michel makes
it seem so easy! There are still spaces available so
please consider joining this class in the new school
year. A big thank you to the parents who are
supporting this class.
