A new season…
A new season of ice and cold! You just have to keep going. Once
the New Year has begun, it is important to stay on the right track.
“Continue to live, love, dream, and work on our well-being and
that of others.”1 In this spirit, the Comité de vie de quartier nord
will continue to fulfill its mission of being a collaborative body that
focuses on local community development.
Our four major projects are:
• Specifying needs in terms of the professional and economic
inclusion of Sherbrooke’s active immigrant populations, by
immigration category
• Publishing the “Pour une participation citoyenne allumée“
training materials and depositing them with the Bibliothèque et
Archives nationales du Québec
• Supporting the festivities of various local cultural communities in
the Borough of Jacques-Cartier
• Updating, publishing, and disseminating the CVQN’s Cadre de
référence

SPRING BREAK AT SHERBROOKE LOISIRS-ACTION!
Sherbrooke Loisirs-Action (SLA) is a non-profit organization
that develops, plans, and holds cultural, recreational, and sports
activities. Our activities contribute to the quality of life and meet
the needs of residents of the Borough of Jacques-Cartier, as well as
those of the rest of the population of Sherbrooke.
SLA offers an array of programs and varied, dynamic events while
ensuring the quality of the services offered and the satisfaction
of users. Through the expertise of our staff, we ensure that our
innovative service offering is as impeccable as possible and that our
customer service is accessible and exemplary.
The spring break program has been an integral part of SLA’s
program for decades, although it has evolved over the past few
years. In fact, before 2009 the spring break program was a general
one, offered by the week.
THE BOROUGH OF JACQUES-CARTIER’S ARTS
AND CULTURE COMMITTEE PROMOTES CULTURAL LIFE
It is always interesting to take stock of the events and activities
at the heart of our mandate. This year, the Comité Arts et Culture
Jacques-Cartier featured six visual arts vernissages, one of which
was held in July to inaugurate our summer beach. We presented
five concerts, including one in collaboration with Saint-Boniface
church. We also played a unifying role in preparing a day devoted to
the Borough of Jacques-Cartier’s artisans.
Most of our events take place at the
Centre communautaire et culturel
Françoise-Dunn. So, if you regularly attend
activities at the centre, now you know that
we are the group that organizes all of the
great exhibitions you see there.
As we are an organization recognized by the Ville de Sherbrooke,
we participated in the Fête des familles for the first time to reach
out to the public and meet other organizations working within the
Borough of Jacques-Cartier.
A few projections for 2016
In 2016, we will continue to produce our cultural calendar and
add provincial activities such as the Journées de la culture and
photography month.
As for the 2016 visual arts program, all of the plans have been
made, and we already have ideas for 2017. We are in full swing and
artists are responding positively to our projects. Once again, a great
variety of works will be on display.
In terms of shows, all will depend on the dates and opportunities.
This is something we will be working on in the coming months.
One thing is for sure, there will be a concert in February, another
in May, a fall concert in October, and a holiday concert sometime
in December.

The spring break program with a specialized theme made its
appearance in 2010. In 2011, it was possible for residents to register
by the day and to choose among three options. In 2012, by-the-day
registration was offered once again and residents could choose
among four options. This concept remained in place until 2015.
New for 2016! The spring break program is still available by the
day, but this time, parents and children can choose their option by
half‑day. This will better meet the needs of parents and the interests
of the 120 children who participate in the spring break program!

25e Arts et culture Jacques-cartier
Taking the opportunity to open the doors of the Montcalm pavilion
to the public for Quebec’s Journées de la culture weekend and its
program proved an automatic success! Increasing visibility within
our community remains vital. Drawing the attention of the public
to all of the creative potential of people trained within the Arts and
Culture concentration is very rewarding. Hearing 25 guest artists
talk about the importance of the concentration in their lives is
priceless recognition! All mentioned embarking on the adventure
offered by the artistic program at Mitchell-Montcalm high school as
an enriching experience in an extraordinary atmosphere where very
strong ties are woven between students and staff.
Our next challenge will be for us to make a mark beyond these
walls... It’s a date!

On September 25, 26, and 27, 2015, festivities took place
to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Arts and Culture
concentration at Mitchell-Montcalm high school, which has served
as a connection between the school and the arts community
by promoting the meaning of art in our school for nearly
three decades. These events also offered artists/former students in
the concentration the opportunity to display their works.
The exhibition was held over the weekend of the Journées de
la culture 2015 and began with a vernissage. The walls of the
Montcalm pavilion were transformed into an art gallery for the
occasion.
The Arts and Culture concentration was created in 1990 with the
goal of establishing an advanced visual arts program based on
essential concepts in art history, multiple artistic techniques, and
openness to the world. In this process, students develop their own
signature, while drawing connections among artists of all eras
(prehistory to contemporary art) and important events in the art
world.
Now, 25 years later, the program is proud of the thousands of
students who evolved while following it. These students, always
in the process of creating, have become, are becoming, and will
become creative actors in the world of tomorrow. For teachers,
reaching the milestone of a quarter century is closely linked to the
compulsion to closely follow the evolution of art!
On the evening of September 25, during the vernissage, the
exhibition of works by former students in the Arts and Culture
concentration came to life. The walls of the foyer and adjacent
hallways in the Montcalm pavilion were adorned with works of all
styles and mediums, resulting from the great talent of 25 artists. All
were united by the same drive: A passion for art!
Guests witnessed the joy of the exhibitors to have returned to their
school, and the evening was enjoyed by all. The artists showed that
there are many occupations and routes that can be taken after the
Arts and Culture concentration! The site was also open on Saturday
and Sunday.

The Carnaval de Sherbrooke: 50 years of winter fun
In February 2016, the Carnaval de Sherbrooke will be celebrating its
50th anniversary. There is only one carnival in Quebec that is older
than Sherbrooke’s, the Carnaval de Québec, which began in 1955.
This year’s edition will shine the spotlight on this key winter activity
in Sherbrooke, which, over the decades, has been presented thanks
to the efforts of two dynamic boroughs!
In 1966, the recreational organization affiliated with Notre-Damede-la-Protection d’Ascot Nord church established a winter carnival
to fund its activities. The organization created a tradition to which
many residents can relate. From year to year, the activities have
been held at Desranleau, Du Debonair, and Quintal parks, filling
them with festive enthusiasm that quickly spread to Fleurimont
residents and merchants who donned the carnival’s colours.
Since the beginning, this event has been an opportunity to
showcase winter fun and offer great activities for families, of
which a growing number have chosen to settle in Fleurimont
(founded in 1971). Despite its traditionally family-oriented
program, the 1976 edition tried to appeal more to the adult crowd.
On January 22, 1976, La Tribune announced that only Wednesday
evening would be devoted to youth. While the campfire and movie
screening at Desranleau school seemed to be intended for the
general public, surely the outdoor mass and French-Canadian-style
supper weren’t the most attractive activities for youth! Still, this
edition wrapped up with the election of Mr. Mustache (!) and a
draw for a trip to Florida for the duchesses.
Over the years, several traditions have taken root and ensured that
residents enthusiastically take part in these festivities in January
and February. While some activities, such as snowmobile races
or Bivouac day, were only on the program for a limited number
of years, others, such as the ice sculpture contest, sliding, dog
sled races, and the election of the carnival queen have become
mainstays. Between 1968 and 2007, hundreds of young women
were duchesses and aspiring queens. From Lisette, the first
queen, to Luce Champoux (1970), Nathalie Lagassé (1985), and
Claudine Robert (2007), do you know how the queen was named at
each edition? The queen was in fact the woman who sold the most
tickets to the carnival.
In 2007, the activities of the newly named Carnaval de Sherbrooke
moved to Parc Victoria, and an association was developed with the
Challenge sur glace ice challenge. A school carnival celebrating
the beginning of spring break was also launched. In 2009, the
Carnaval de Sherbrooke moved to Parc Jacques-Cartier. Located
in the middle of the great city of Sherbrooke, Parc Jacques-Cartier
was the perfect place to relaunch the event. It is an enchanting
site, well-known by residents, functional, and easily accessible.
That year, nearly 50 000 people came to celebrate winter, which
confirmed the organizers’ decision for the event’s new location.
Over the past few years, the carnival’s program has mainly targeted
families, as well as teens, adults, and tourists. In addition to the
themed villages, dog sleds, zip line, pony rides, sleigh rides, and
other winter fun, downtown activities have been added to the
program, including a giant slide, tastings on Wellington Nord,
outdoor shows, fireworks, etc. The traditional duchesses left
the limelight in 2007, but this was only to make room for new
traditions.
Half a century of engagement, activities, and winter festivities, is
no small feat! It’s an opportunity for winter enthusiasts to celebrate
this Sherbrooke jubilee!
In 2001, the organizers had big ambitions and
wanted their snow maze to be recognized by the
Guinness Book of World Records. More than 6000 people
visited the attraction in just one weekend! The
2001 edition of the maze was created by François and
Sylvain Belleau at the site of Parc Quintal. It covered
17 000 sq. ft. with six-foot-high walls of snow!
