Celebrating WA’s seniors
Seniors Week in Western Australia is an annual statewide
celebration to acknowledge and show appreciation to seniors for
their contribution to the community, as well as challenge negative
stereotypes and present a positive view of ageing.
The week-long program encourages younger Western Australians
to make decisions to improve their health later in life and
promotes inter-generational celebration of seniors.
From November 8 to 15 there will be a number of events
throughout the state to celebrate WA’s seniors.
Have a Go Day is a free, action-packed day of activities at
Burswood Park on Wednesday November 11 and Seniors in the
City is a seniors celebration in the Perth CBD.
More than 100 community events will take place around the city,
such as film screenings, morning teas, shows and bus outings.
Check out some of the other events on page 14 of this magazine.
Providing its patients with
the highest standard of care
Keeping healthy and feeling your best is important at any
age and that doesn’t change just because you’ve entered
the retirement phase of your life.
In your senior years, diagnostic imaging services are critical
for the prevention, detection and treatment of many
conditions – whether it be bone density scans to test for
osteoporosis, Low-Dose Computed Tomography (CT) to
screen for cancer or general x-rays for other ailments.
Providing diagnostic imaging services in Western Australia
since 1981, SKG Radiology has grown to become one of
the largest providers in the state with a network of 20
convenient metropolitan and regional branches as well as
premier hospital locations.
Additionally, SKG Radiology’s premium range of services
including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), highresolution, ultra-low radiation dose CT scanners delivering
up to 90 per cent reduction in dose, ultrasound, dental
scanning and general x-ray, provide a fully comprehensive
experience at every location.
Furthermore, SKG Radiology offers ‘walk-in’ Low-Dose CT
services and general x-ray services at most of its locations
(excluding hospital sites), meaning no appointments are
necessary.

A caring and supportive setting
Enjoying and making the most of our time is an important part
of life, particularly after retirement, according to Juniper Chief
Executive Vaughan Harding.
“At Juniper we believe in enjoying and celebrating life and
providing choice in how you wish to live it,” he said.
“You can feel secure knowing that Juniper is supporting you
whether it’s enjoying companionship and independence at one
of our friendly retirement communities, receiving assistance to
enjoy your own home, or living a good life at one of Juniper’s
welcoming residential care facilities.
“Discover a new retirement lifestyle and enjoy companionship,
community spirit and independence at our retirement
living communities where a wide choice of villas, units and
apartments can be found at many coastal, metropolitan and
some regional locations.”
Mr Harding said there were many opportunities to be involved
in the social aspect of life.
As a preferred supplier of radiology services and proud
sponsor of WA’s sporting elite – the West Coast Eagles, Perth
Wildcats, Perth Heat, West Coast Fever, the Perth Lynx and the
Subiaco Lions Football Club – you too can choose to go where
the best go.
SKG Radiology also provides bulk billing for all Commonwealth
Pension Card holders and Health Care Card holders for the

Cardio endurance exercise: Cardio, which
includes walking, stair climbing, swimming,
hiking, cycling, rowing, tennis and dancing,
helps lessen fatigue and shortness of breath.
This type of exercise uses large muscle groups
in rhythmic motions over a period of time,
gets your heart pumping and may even leave
you feeling short of breath. Cardio can be a
big help by enhancing endurance.
Strength and power: This type of exercise
means building up muscle with repetitive
motions using weight or external resistance
from body weight, machines, free weights or
elastic bands. It is good for you because it
prevents the loss of bone mass, builds muscle,
improves balance and can improve your
speed. Building strength makes daily tasks that
much easier.
Flexibility: As we grow older, we may start to
feel ourselves getting stiffer. Doing activities
such as yoga or pilates helps promote a full
range of motion in the body’s joints. It helps the
body stay limber and can assist with activities
such as driving, bending and stretching or
playing with the grandchildren.
Balance: Doing yoga, Tai Chi and posture
exercises can improve balance, posture
and quality of walking. It also reduces risks
of falling or fear of falls, which increases
independence.

Secure, resort-style living for the young at heart
Let National Lifestyle Villages introduce you
to two wonderful, secure gated communities
for the over-45s in Baldivis, around 30 minutes
south of Perth.
These communities are for people who are
young-at-heart, whose kids have left home
and who want to free up time and money by
downsizing.
In April this year Baldivis was deemed
Australia’s fastest growing suburb, according
to a population report released by the
Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Tuart Lakes Lifestyle Resort is located on a
stunning elevated site overlooking gorgeous
Lake Walyungup and Lake Cooloongup.
It is home to a multimillion dollar clubhouse
complete with a dining hall, stage, catering
kitchen, billiards lounge and library.
The second and final stage of the facilities,
due for completion in January 2016, include
a fitness centre with indoor heated pool, spa
and sauna, a yoga studio and fully equipped
gym.
Prices range from $269,000 for a onebedroom home to $533,000 for a luxurious,
elegant three-bedroom, split-level
overlooking a central park which, once
complete, will be a hub for everything from
casual barbecues to business conferences.
Just because you’re not an elite
athlete, doesn’t mean you don’t
deserve the best care.
Vibe Baldivis Lifestyle Village enjoys a range of
resort-style facilities including clubhouse
with dining hall, mini golf course, heated
swimming pool, workshop, equipped gym
and bowling green.
Prices at Vibe range from $189,000 for a brand
new one-bedroom home to $347,000 for
NLV’s most popular design, the Pegasus.
Both locations have close communities of
friendly people, an active social committee
as well as many independent clubs and groups
to join, and they both offer the best of
independent, private living while offering a
new level of personal connection among
neighbours.

Pain relief that aims to get you back on track
Back on Track is a unique range of pain-relief
products, which combine ancient Chinese
experience, modern scientific findings and
skilled textile production.
The result is a fabric of polyester with a
ceramic powder melted into the threads.
The ceramic reflects body heat as an
infrared wave, a form of energy that has a
documented pain-relieving effect.
The reflected heat can reduce inflammation,
ease muscle tension, increase blood
circulation and hasten the healing process.
Back on Track products can be used to warm
up your muscles before physical exercise or
work, thereby reducing the risk of strains or
injury. Most importantly, they can expedite
the recovery from established injuries.
Back on Track is available in the form of
clothing and bedding products, as well as
joint and muscle braces for most parts of the
human body. Back on Track also manufactures
a wide range of products for horses.
It is the genuine aim of Back on Track to
provide an easy, comfortable and effective
contribution to a life of health and wellbeing.

Novacare Lifestyle Village was selected in February 2015 as
one of four national finalists for the Lend Lease Award for
Best Retirement Living Development at the Property Council’s

The award recognises innovation and excellence in the design of
retirement living developments in Australia.
Novacare Busselton was the only finalist selected from Western
Australia for the retirement village award for 2015.
The village recently completed work on its final stage of homes.
Three of the 12 stage-six homes, designed by McDonald Jones
Architects, remain for sale and are priced from $528,000 to $637,850.
Built by Binyah Constructions in a central location within
the village, these homes include timber floors, ducted airconditioning, gas hot water systems, stone benchtops and
timber-decked alfresco areas.
Safety is also paramount, with security screens to windows and
doors, a remote-controlled garage door with internal entry and a
24-hour emergency call service fitted in each home.
Residents will have use of the Village Square, an activity centre
that includes an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, spa and
synthetic-grass bowling green.
There is a restaurant, recreation hall, craft room, fitness centre,

Residents encouraged to Step into String and enjoy village life
luxury resort than a retirement village according to selling
agent Ron Hodge.
He said it enjoyed an ideal location within walking distance of
Geographe Bay and local shops and was less than 30 minutes’
drive from the Margaret River wine region.
“The pet-friendly homes in the village are sold with a leasefor-life, which means no stamp duty is paid on purchase,”
Mr Hodge said.
“Residents pay a monthly village levy to cover management
and maintenance of the village and grounds but are responsible
for their own council and water rates, together with electricity
and gas bills. Our secure, gated community boasts outstanding
features and sets a new benchmark in retirement living in WA.”
There are also a number of resale homes available, priced
between $385,000 and $495,000.
For more information phone selling agent Ron Hodge on
(08) 9751 1466 or 0415 908 158 or visit novacare.com.au.
For Lendlease Retirement Living, health and wellbeing is
paramount, with each village focused on providing access to
a wide range of health and personal care services that will
support residents to sustain healthier and happier lives.
“We’re on site to explain to residents and their families their
entitlements and share information that may put their mind
at ease regarding Home Care packages and Transitional Care
programs and other healthy living programs,” she said.
Lendlease Retirement Living Regional Manager Fiona Rinaldi
said there was a great range of very affordable home and
personal care services available to residents, but understanding
what might be accessible was often very confusing.
Throughout September and October residents have been
encouraged to ‘Step into Spring’ with village walking groups
supported by physiotherapy-led warm-up exercise sessions,
provision of water bottles and supply of pedometers.
“Our residents range from those who are very busy leading
active lives who would benefit from domestic services such
as household cleaning, whilst others require a personalised
program for continuum of care to support their independent
living,” she said.
“Encouraging residents to stay physically fit and mentally active
is a priority in all of our villages,” Ms Rinaldi said.
Together with Brightwater, Lendlease retirement communities
aim to encourage purpose-filled active lifestyles for sustainable
and healthy, independent living.
“We identified a great opportunity to enhance our service
offering to residents by partnering with Brightwater Care
Group, one the largest care providers in WA. The partnership
ensures we can provide valuable knowledge, information
and support to our residents and their families, onsite or in a
resident’s home regarding consumer directed care.”
Brightwater staff are available at eight Lendlease villages in WA
to provide information to residents about packages available
for Home and Community Care services and Transitional Care
programs.
Ms Rinaldi said that knowing there was a friendly face in the
village who could have confidential discussions with residents
regarding funding options and assistance available was an
invaluable support service for residents.
Brightwater Senior Client Service Leader Toni Jackson said their
role in the villages was to help keep resident health at optimal
levels.

Keeping seniors on the go through a range of treatment programs
Independence is an important part of a
senior’s life and ensuring they are given a
chance to be independent is of utmost
importance.
“Our treatment programs are done in

so that we not only attain their goals but we are
able to do it in a financially viable way.
On The Go Rehabilitation Services provides its

“She was and still is my inspiration. She taught me
many things but, most importantly, she instilled
in us the importance of looking after each other.”
On The Go addresses a wide range of

weight control/management, foot care,
orthopaedic rehabilitation, speech disorders,
swallowing disorders, mobility issues, cardiorespiratory disorders, general fitness and

“By implementing our treatments in the

Moving out of the family home is a major
decision, especially if you are moving to a
new area.
Phil and Leonie followed in April and,
according to Mrs Hansen, the three men have
formed a strong bond.
But for three couples, the relocation to Amana
Living Treendale has been a move of no regrets
and has resulted in a beautiful friendship.
“They get together quite a lot,” she said. “They
often have beers together and Phil takes Rob
and John out in the boat.
Robert and Terrie Dawson from Kingsley, John
and Angela Hansen from Greenwood and Phil
and Leonie McKeon from Australind moved
into Amana Living Treendale earlier this year.
“We had lovely neighbours in Perth but we’ve
won the lotto here.”
They’ve gone from strangers to firm friends in
just six months.
John and Angela were first to move in,
followed a few days later by Robert and Terrie.
“We met Terrie and Rob when we first moved
in and discovered they lived just five minutes
away from us in Perth,” Mrs Hansen said.
“We were literally separated by Hepburn
Avenue but didn’t know each other. However,
we were having drinks together within a week
of meeting each other here in Treendale.”
“Everyone is nice,” Mrs Dawson said. “When
we’re all out in the street, all the neighbours
talk to one another. There’s a real sense of
community and everyone looks out for you.”
For Mrs McKeon, country hospitality has
played an important part in creating a sense of
community.
“We go to the functions at the club house,”
Mrs Dawson said. “I do craft on a Wednesday
afternoon.
“You can go swimming or do aerobics. The
choice is yours and you don’t have to do
everything, which is what I like.”

lifestyle village BUSSELTON
Ultimate in lock and leave retirement living
Novacare Lifestyle Village Busselton has been selected as one of the
four finalists for the Lend Lease Property Council of Australia 2015
Award for the Best Retirement Living Development in Australia.
Construction is well underway at SwanCare
Group’s stunning lifestyle apartment complex
in its Bentley Park community.
Novacare provides Independent Living in a secure environment in
the beautiful Geographe Bay region of the South West of WA.
Built over four storeys, with secure basement
parking, the new Akora Lifestyle Apartments
represent the ultimate in low maintenance,
lock and leave retirement living.
SwanCare General Manager Retirement Living
Natalie Hodi said the emphasis on security,
comfort and lifestyle had seen over 40 per
cent of Akora apartments already sold.
“Akora will be extremely low maintenance,
which means residents can do all the things
they’ve always wanted to do and they can
make the most of SwanCare’s social activities
and the many local attractions,” she said.
“Residents also have the peace of mind that
comes with knowing that high-quality care or
assistance is available on-site if they should
ever need it.
“Another great thing is that the apartments
will be brand new and that’s exciting in
itself. They’ll be beautiful to live in, with top
quality modern appliances like a dishwasher
and dryer included.”
SwanCare Group Retirement Living
Consultant Harry Pearson said that more and
more people were turning to apartments
such as Akora because they offered so many
advantages to the resident, including being
more affordable because the cost of the
land was shared.

the various health and care services out there, assessing each
resident’s needs, assisting with funding and organising meetings
with the appropriate providers,” Mrs Arthur said.
With estimates that one-quarter of the Western Australia
population will be seniors by 2041, Garden Villages is dedicated
to providing an affordable and secure living option.
“Gardens Villages provides seniors with an enjoyable and
peaceful retirement, providing the perfect environment to live
independently while still enjoying the security and friendship

Practice has an unmatched
record of innovation in WA
Perth Radiological Clinic (PRC) is the longest established private
radiology practice in Perth. Since opening its doors in 1948 the
practice has grown to become the state’s premier diagnostic imaging
provider, with a world-class digitally-linked network of community
and hospital based clinics across the metropolitan area.
The practice has an unmatched record of innovation in WA, being
the first private practice to introduce ultrasound, CT and MRI.
Today the company employs 700 Western Australians including
over 70 specialist doctors. It operates the radiology department in
some of Perth’s busiest public hospitals including Joondalup Health
Campus in the north and Armadale Health Service in the south.
Next month Perth Radiological Clinic will open its 19th site in
Perth, when the new St John of God Midland Public Hospital
commences operations. The new department will bring much
needed diagnostic imaging services to the eastern metropolitan
area’s new medical hub.
Underpinning the company’s ethos of innovation is its
unwavering commitment to the care of the patients it serves
allied with unparalleled diagnostic acumen. The company prides
itself on the calibre of its doctors and the skills of its technical
and support staff.
Perth Radiological Clinic Chairman Dr Martin Blake says, “The real
strength of PRC is the cohesive nature of our group of doctors
supported by dedicated professional staff. Whilst it is a business,
the overriding emphasis is on patient care.
There is a commitment to and an investment in excellence
in equipment and staff, which in conjunction with a team of
carefully selected radiologists combines to ensure the best

experience and best report for every patient, every time.
Patient outcome is further improved by the fact that at PRC,
as opposed to many other practices, radiologists operate in
smaller specialist teams all linked by a digital network that allows
images to be instantly seen at all its sites no matter where the
patient attended. This allows for an expert subspecialist opinion
on every case, vastly improving diagnostic accuracy. This model
essentially brings the radiologist to the patient.”
Perth Radiological Clinic recognises the strain ever increasing
costs of medical care imposes on patients and will continue its
long-established practice of bulk billing pensioners and Health
Care Card holders for most Medicare eligible examinations at all
of its branches.
