The Castanea
Railroad Station
Much of Clinton County’s
History is tied to railroads.
Local railroads carrying logs,
coal, and passengers jointed
with larger systems, providing
endless market potential.
The former Lock Haven
Station of the Beech Creek,
Southern
and
Clearfield
Railroad, located in Castanea
and constructed in 1883, is a
find example of Victorian architecture. Owned by the Clinton
County Historical Society, it
presently houses the Clinton
Central Model Railroad Club
and their layout of model trains
and railroad memorabilia.
The Barton
Street School
The Baton Street School
House is undoubtedly one of the
favorite sites to tour for visitors.
It is operated as a “hands on”
museum and is a favorite with
the children housing memorabilia from local fire companies
and military.
Silent Eagle
Sail Plane Rides
The Silent Eagle is a Stemme
S10 VT, perhaps the best
sailplane in the history of aviation. There are only about 200 in
the world. She takes off just like
an ordinary airplane. Therefore
she is safer, more efficient, and
more affordable than a towlaunched glider.
After about five minutes of
climb, the engine gets shut off
and the propeller folds into the
nosecone. She then morphs into
a pure sailplane. Unlike ordinary gliders, a guarantee times
in the air because the engine
can restart if needed to,
although it is rarely necessary.
For the same reason, I can also
guarantee returning to the airport. Call for appointments and
gift certificates at 660-6028. Can
carry passengers up to 225lbs.
More info at www.lockhaveneagle.com or email [email protected].
Fly outs from Piper
Normally fly out of Piper
Memorial Airport (KLHV) in
Lock Haven, PA.
One half hour rides consist of
a 5-7 minute climb with the
engine on followed by a silent
descent of about 23-25 minutes.
One hour rides involve a climb
of about 10-13 minutes with a
47-50 minute silent descent.
Cross-country and longer
rides in excess of one hour are
also available.
Some people enjoy listening
to music during their flights. If
that is your preference, you
should let me know what kind of
music you like so that I can
make it available.
One half hour rides are $80.
One hour rides are $120.
Rides longer than one hour
are $40 per half hour after the
first hour.
Geocaching
Geocaching is a high-tech
treasure hunting game played
throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS
devices. The basic idea is to
locate hidden containers, called
geocaches, outdoors and then
share your experiences online.
Geocaching is enjoyed by people
from all age groups, with a
strong sense of community and
support for the environment.
Hundreds of caches are
placed throughout the county.
Bring the family and hunt for
hidden treasures and personal
satisfaction.

Family fun
At Endless Mountains’
events, it’s all about the
family and having fun!
Sure we’ve got activities
that are for grown-ups
only, like the Wyalusing
Valley Wine Festival in
September. But if you’ve
got a whole clan with you
ranging in ages from 0 to
99, you’re going to have a
blast here!
The little town of
Laceyville has its annual
Community Day in July,
where festivities include a
pedal tractor pull, a turtle
race, a greased pig contest,
a baby judging contest, a
pie throwing contest, live
entertainment, lots of
food, and other fun games
for the kids.
The
Pennsylvania
Apple n’ Cheese Festival
in Canton is a great time
to sample an array of delicious apple treats (and lots
of other yummies). There’s
also plenty of things going
on to keep one intrigued
throughout the day – like
a children’s hay maze, face
painting, blacksmithing
demonstrations, and pony
rides.
The Sullivan County
Fairgrounds in Forksville
is host to a most fascinating event in October. It’s
the annual Sullivan
County Fall Festival &
Lumberjack/Chainsaw
Carving Competition. The
excitement here never
stops, as woodsmen boast
their talents in ax throwing, speed chopping, and
log rolling; while chainsaw
carvers do magical transformations to big ‘ol logs.
Also, you are sure to find a
special souvenir from the
many craft vendors that
fill the fairgrounds each
year.
Everybody loves a cuddly-looking animal, and
you’ll find plenty of that at

sheared for its wool.

Museums
Taking a trip to a museum is like a mini vacation
through time. Sound
intriguing?
The Endless Mountains
Region is fortunate to have
in its midst many unique
museums that contain a
wide range of memorabilia
from days of old, along
with some hidden treasures of today.
The museums in the
Endless Mountains are
fascinating. Behind every
door, around every corner,
you’ll find a treasure that
will attract your attention
for one reason or another –
perhaps its age or size,
peculiarity or familiarity,
or maybe you’re drawn to
it’s
historical
value.
Whatever the reason,
these items will make you
look twice and say “wow!”
Call visitor bureau for
museum names and locations.
Takin’ it to the river
The
Susquehanna
River is one of the Endless
Mountains Region’s most
prized possessions – not
only for its natural beauty,
but also for the recreational activities it provides.
The north branch of
this natural wonder flows
effortlessly about 90-miles
through the Endless
Mountains – winding
through
Bradford,
Wyoming
and
Susquehanna counties. It
is the 16th largest river in
the United States, and the
largest tributary of the
Chesapeake Bay.
The
mighty
Susquehanna is a perfect
waterway for boating, with
many access points along
the banks for boaters to
enter and exit the water as
they please.
The ride is a peaceful,
relaxing experience, with
the added pleasure of getting to see nature in the
scenery and in the wildlife
that resides in and around
the river. Docking your
boat and taking a few
hours to explore the quaint
towns and villages along
the river is also a great
way to enhance your trip’s
memories.
Any avid fishers out
there? The Susquehanna
River is swimming with all
kinds of fish, including
bass, muskellunge, panfish, and walleye. The

Wine is a splendid thing
The wine industry is
flourishing in the Endless
Mountains and there’s
more than one way to
experience the delicious,
local, handcrafted wines
unique to the region.
From distinct specailty
wines to the traditional
varietals, one great way
to sample them all is to
take the Grape Escape
Wine Trail. This selfguided trail will take you
to 12 wineries dotted
throughout the Endless
Mountains and beyond.
Each stop will offer you a
different taste, a different
story, and a different
memory.
Another fun way to
please your wine palate is
to spend a day at the
Wyalusing Valley Wine
Festival,
held
in
September
on
the
Wyalusing
Valley
Museum grounds just off
Route 6 in Wyalusing.
The event has been drawing crowds from all
around for five years. This
year, the festivities will
take place on September
12. There will be plenty of
wine for the tasting, food
galore, craft and other
vendors, and great entertainment throughout the
day. For more information, call 746-3979.

must-see experiences
Art is expressed in many different
mediums, and the Endless Mountains
is a wonderful place to experience a
variety of these interpretations.
You can find many hidden treasures
on two art trails – one will take you
across Route 6 and has ten intriguing
stops in the Endless Mountains; the
other is a wonderful trail of local artists’
studios and shops dotted throughout
Sullivan County.
Several art galleries highlight the
artistry of both local and nationally
known artists, displaying everything
from watercolors and charcoal drawings, to photographs and pen and inks.
Local talent also abounds here
through pottery, sculptures, custom picture framing, handmade jewelry,
mosaics, and hand blown glass pieces.
Our cultural centers conduct a wide
range of hands-on workshops, including
decorative painting, quilting, pottery
and sculpture, knitting, and drawing to
name a few.

arts, contact us at the visitors bureau

is also well-known for its
bustling art and artisan
culture.
From Mooresburg in
the east to the village of
Water Street in the west,
Route 45 traverses some
of Pennsylvania’s most
stunning countryside and
is home to a wealth of

Every town a treasure
The
Susquehanna
River Valley is made up of
many unique and thriving
downtowns. Each one has
its own character, personality and historical offerings.
In May 2009, the
Visitors Bureau launched
a new series of brochures
called, “Every Town a
Treasure”. The first group
of brochures highlight the
following
downtowns:
Selinsgrove,
Milton,
Sunbury, and Lewisburg.
Kid-friendly fun
The
Susquehanna
River Valley offers all
kinds of fun things to do
for kids (and kids-atheart). Even on rainy
days, we offer a multitude
of things to occupy your
little one. Ride a thrilling
wooden roller coaster,
experience living history
at a kid-friendly museum,
catch a movie in an Art
Deco theatre, or get up

Antiquing
Our 3-county region is
home to dozens of unique
antique shops. In fact, you
could spend an entire
week going from one place
to another searching for
treasures! Some of the
shops are located in old
mills, barns, and other
historic structures. Others
are located in our thriving
downtowns.
As you explore the
diverse antique shops
Pennsylvania life before
the advent of the superhighway. If you’re looking
to connect one-on-one with
a local artist, enjoy some
unique eateries and
shops, and stay at a
quaint B&B along the
way, this is the road trip
for you.
Think you hear the
sound of horse hooves clipclopping along wooden
planks as you travel
around the Susquehanna
River Valley?
Well, you’re probably
not dreaming – Amish
and Mennonite buggies
are often spotted on many
of our 17 covered bridges
in the tri-county region,
including one reputed to
be the oldest in the
Commonwealth. When
you take this road trip,
you’ll discover a part of
history that’s not so far
behind you.

Columbia-Montour: Carnivals, festivals and events all summer long
Mom – I’m bored!
By INGRID BARNES,
director of marketing,
Columbia-Montour
Visitors Bureau
School is almost out
and summer vacation is
just around the corner.
Everyone has heard his or
her child complain of
boredom. Better than
watching TV or staring at
the computer, get out and
do something! Vacations
give parents and children
memories to last a lifetime. Fun family vacations are events to be
remembered. A vacation
gives everyone in the family a chance to share the
same experiences, to
laugh together, play
together and just BE
together. Not all vacations require travel, two
weeks and big bucks.
Local daytrips can be a
vacation with imagination and forethought.
Here are some of our
favorite places to go:
• Bill’s Old Bike Barn Enjoy a unique and
diverse collection of vintage motorcycles and
memorabilia, known to be
the largest on the east
coast. They feature over
20,000 sq. ft. of collectibles from around the
world, including numerous military displays, circus and carousel horses,
plus, their newest addition: Billville - the streets
of yesteryear! www.billsbikebarn.com; 759-7030.
• Brace’s Stables –
They offer riding instructions, guided rides, buggy
and sleigh rides, pony
rides, and board horses.
Take a beautiful four mile
ride to Fishing Creek and
back, shaded by trees or
take an exciting six mile
ride to Sullivan Falls;
925-5253.

Affordable, comfortable camping for all
(ARA) — Every year,
families across the country head outdoors to enjoy
quality time together and
appreciate the wonders of
nature -- but sometimes
the idea of “roughing it” is
not as enjoyable for certain members of the family.
You might assume an
RV is the only way to
bring the comforts of home
to
the
campsite.
Fortunately, thanks to
modern technology, generators give you a great way
to bring along those extra
amenities and comforts
without the expense associated with renting, purchasing or even driving
your RV.
Generators can give
your camping adventure
the comforts of home
while their low noise,
small size and light
weight -- the lightest models currently weigh in at a
mere 40 to 50 pounds -make them a pleasure to
use and easy to transport
regardless of whether
you’re camping with a
minivan, SUV or your
standard pick-up truck.
Even without an RV, a
generator can supply the
comforts and necessities of
home along with some
not-so-necessary items
like lamps, microwaves,
radios, hair dryers and
even a TV and gaming
system for the kids.
Simple and easy to transport and operate, with a
generator you’ll have the
comfort and convenience
of electricity and you’re
ready to roll.
One of the newest generators in this portable
category is the EF2000iS
from Yamaha Motor
Corporation,
U.S.A.
Designed specifically for
easy transport and a variety of uses, it is perfect for
the campsite. If you have
a larger appliance you
can’t live without, the
EF2000iS also comes with
a parallel-use function
which allows two units to
plug into each other for
double the output, while
maintaining the maximum portability of two
light weight generators to
provide the power of one
large, heavy generator.
“The EF2000iS is the
ideal lightweight camping
companion,” says Colin
Iwasa, power equipment
sales
manager
at
Yamaha. “At 2000 watts,
it is all the power you need
to run small electric appliances. More importantly,
it is quiet, versatile and
can run for up to eight
hours on less than a gallon
of gas. It’s even powerful
enough to run your refrigerator, television and
some lights at home if you
have a power outage.”
Of course, it is always
important to use generators responsibly and safely, especially around the
campsite. To keep your
family safe, Yamaha provides a few guidelines for
proper generator operation:
• Never use a generator indoors or in partially
enclosed areas. A portable
generator uses a combustion engine just like your
car, which produces toxic,
poisonous carbon monoxide exhaust gases. Set it
up outdoors in a well-ventilated, dry area away
from any car or trailer
windows, doors and other
air intakes.
• Read the manufacturer’s instructions for
safe operation prior to use.
This booklet comes with
your generator. Additional
copies are available at
your local dealership.
• Keep generators
away from fires and never
fuel the generator while
it’s running. Fuel liquids
are flammable and dangerous if ingested, so store
them far away from your
family’s common areas
and open flames. Fuel can
also be sparked by a running generator, so turn off
the engine before refueling.
• Use a carbon monoxide detector. Running generators create carbon
monoxide, one of the most
hazardous side effects of
generator use. To be safe,
install a carbon monoxide
detector in your trailer or,
if camping outdoors, keep
the generator far away
from any tents or enclosed
spaces.
• Avoid electric shock.
To prevent electric shock,
never touch the generator
with wet hands. Also, do
not operate a generator in
rain or snow in order to
keep the generator dry.
• Watch out for hot
engines and mufflers.
Avoid placing flammable
materials
near
the
exhaust outlet during
operation, and keep any
generator at least three
feet away from buildings
or other equipment to
avoid overheating. Always
carry the generator by its
handles.
As long as it’s operated
safely, a generator can
help make you and your
family a little more comfortable while “roughing
it” under the stars -- and
you’ll look forward to
many more trips to come.

Tips to keep energy, stamina
up while on the road
(NAPSI) — Attempts to eat well don't
have to take a vacation whenever you're traveling, whether for work or fun.
In fact, starting the day with foods loaded
with ingredients rich in iron, fiber, omega-3
essential fatty acids, vitamins, antioxidants
and other nutrients is essential to keep travelers focused while keeping stamina levels up
when on the road. To keep those energy levels cranked, here are a few tips:
• Stay hydrated. It's possible to think you
are hungry and make a poor snack choice
when in fact you are thirsty. Be sure to have
drinking water available throughout the day.
• Snack smart. Before heading out to
catch a train or plane, pack a snack of vegetables, fruit, string cheese or low-fat pretzels. Whole grain crackers are also a good
choice, as is a sandwich made with whole
grain bread.
• Prepare for your big day with a good
breakfast. Research shows that breakfast is
the most important meal of the day (aiding in
performance, stamina, weight loss and heart
health, according to the experts at the
American Dietetic Association and the
American Heart Association), yet many
Americans skip breakfast.
Smart hotels like Hilton Garden Inn
(HGI) make it easier for their guests to eat
sensibly while traveling. The upscale midpriced brand recently worked with "Top
Chef" star Chris "CJ" Jacobson to develop a
breakfast menu with ingredients that can
maximize energy and stamina in a way that
is both sensible and tasty.
"When designing the menu, I relied heavily on my own nutritional habits on the road
as a professional athlete," said Jacobson.
The resulting "BIG DAY Breakfast"™
menu features dishes geared to keep travelers going, including "The Hearty Hash,"
which combines beef brisket (or seared tofu),
sweet potatoes, leeks, eggs and whole wheat
bread; and a granola and flaxseed parfait
made with Greek or plain yogurt, honey and
fresh strawberries.
With any luck and some smart choices,
travelers may return from vacation eating
well and in better shape than before.
To check out the recipes that are part of
the "BIG DAY Breakfast" menu, visit
