HIT SO HARD is the life and near-‐death story of Patty Schemel, the hard-‐hitting drummer of HOLE whose friendship with struggling musician Kurt Cobain unexpectedly led her to a path of fame, addiction, betrayal, survival and triumph. (Documentary) Patty Schemel lived with Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love in Hollywood in 1992, right after becoming a member of HOLE and the birth of Frances Bean Cobain. “HIT SO HARD: The Life & Near-‐Death Story of Drummer Patty Schemel” is a behind-‐the scenes portrait of what has been dubbed the unlucky 13th Generation, told through one woman’s amazing journey. In HIT SO HARD we follow the rise and fall and recovery of Patty Schemel, a female drummer who can rock with the best of them, most notable for her remarkable artistry in Courtney Love’s seminal rock band “Hole.” It offers inspiration for its audience to embrace the redemptive power of facing your demons to find your place in what can feel like a hostile world. HIT SO HARD uses filmed video interviews with Patty, friends, family and colleagues mixed with never-‐before-‐
seen footage actually shot with Patty’s Hi-‐8 camera while on tour and while living with Courtney and Kurt just before his suicide. It is literally an all-‐access backstage pass to Patty’s hard won triumph over the pressures that brought others close to her down, but also to the forces an entire generation continues to battle as they grow beyond their “baby bust” legacy. Through seeing Patty’s personal struggle unflinchingly close-‐up and first-‐hand, HIT SO HARD is, equally profoundly, about the generation she represents: the forgotten, discarded youth that became so closely associated with the grunge music revolution. A direct result of suffering through the Reagan-‐Bush era, the 20-‐somethings of the 1990s felt unseen and disenfranchised. The disheveled look and the angry driving music that their heroes played became the defining symbols of an angst-‐filled generation. While an increasingly conservative America routinely dismissed them as a youth culture adrift in a self-‐indulgent slovenly lifestyle, the alcohol and drugs they routinely “enjoyed” offered escape from the pain and rage that lay below the plague of apathy spreading through these young people’s lives. As a young girl who always knew she was “different” from the other kids in her farm town home outside of Seattle, the openly gay Patty never dreamed she would one day have her picture on the cover of “Rolling Stone.” But she also never fathomed that she could lose it all. HIT SO HARD Press Kit 3 A true survivor of what we now know was the disaffected “slacker” generation, Patty found herself, like her friend Kurt Cobain, drawn to the dark side of alcohol and drugs, on a downward spiral from which there seemed to be only one exit. Thrown out of bands and forced to sell everything including her drum set to support her habit, Patty seemed doomed to follow in the footsteps of the scores of musician friends of her era that lost their lives to the deadly combination of ennui and addiction. But Patty woke up one morning, next to her shopping cart in the empty lot she now called “home,” on the corner of Temple and Alvarado. She was sick of fighting every day just to survive and strong enough to ask for help from the family she had long ago left behind. Patty’s story serves as a wake up call and an inspiration to anyone who has fallen into the grip of hopelessness and self-‐doubt. It is a heart-‐wrenching account of a woman, HIT SO HARD, who managed to regain her self respect, find love, and embrace her musical talent as the one constant that to this day keeps her alive and kicking. HIT SO HARD Press Kit 4 DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
from P. David Ebersole, director of “Hit So Hard” I consider myself to be a political filmmaker. Born in Los Angeles, the only son of a feminist psychologist whose stepfather was the city editor of the Los Angeles Times, I grew up in a household that routinely made connections between the personal and the political. Whether wearing the hat of writer, director, producer or all three, the underlying theme is the most important aspect of any story I am telling. What do these characters say; how am I shifting the perspective of my audience; can this story make a difference in a noisy world already bombarded with too much information? As an openly gay man, I am naturally attracted to stories about outsiders. A film I wrote/directed, DEATH IN VENICE, CA, riffs on Thomas Mann’s original novella’s themes of obsession, repression and sickness, and updates them to ask questions about personal responsibility in the time of the AIDS plague. Another film on which I was the creative co-‐
producer, STRANGER INSIDE, is about the cycle of violence for women of color in prison. And a project that I co-‐wrote and co-‐produced, THE NEW WOMEN, asks questions about turning our societal structure around from one that is grounded in patriarchy to one that is led by women. These are consistent themes that run through my work: giving voice to my community, questioning the status quo, and asking hard questions about the inner choices we make that trap us within (or somehow release us from) the chains that bind us to our personal histories. Cut to 2007: My friend Patty Schemel brought me a box, filled with 40+ hours of never-‐before-‐
seen video footage from when she was on tour with her band Hole. She shot the tape on Hi-‐8 and was afraid it would disintegrate soon, so she came asking for advice about how to best preserve it. Soon, the two of us were transferring the tapes and watching the footage together. Patty, a great raconteur, began telling me her very personal and sometimes harrowing story. And the seed of the documentary was born. My husband/producer Todd Hughes and I spent the next few years interviewing Patty's band-‐mates including all the members of Hole (Melissa Auf der Maur, Eric Erlandson and Courtney Love), friends, fans, social critics and other women drummers to craft what has become “HIT SO HARD: The Life & Near Death Story of Patty Schemel.” Early on, we decided we would get more intimate and honest interviews if we kept the crew tiny so, except in a few circumstances, we used the Maysles brothers as our model, with Todd working the camera and sound and me asking all of the questions. HIT SO HARD is literally a family made film: with Todd and I doing the heavy lifting, our great friend Christina Soletti (our other producer and not incidentally Patty’s wife) finessing all of our access, and Patty’s best friend Roddy writing the score. Everyone working on or appearing in it did so out of love for Patty and a belief that telling her story, now, was important and necessary. It was the definition of “labor of love.” HIT SO HARD Press Kit 5 Patty's life journey naturally lent itself to the documentary style we chose for HIT SO HARD: a complex tapestry of current-‐day interviews blended with archival material and stills, peppered with her powerful behind-‐the-‐scenes home video. Imagery and interviews are juxtaposed, often with split-‐screen in order to weave us forward, to witness Patty's breaking point and hopefully learn from her ultimate triumph. In the end, HIT SO HARD is about survival and not giving in to the demons within that tear you apart, especially, as Patty’s friend and colleague Roddy Bottum so eloquently encapsulates it in our film, “when your artistry is being called into question.” What creative person doesn’t identify with that, even if for many of us, the intensity of that struggle may not be on such a heightened level? I’m not an addict and I’m certainly not a rock star, but I honestly feel like Patty is telling my story as much as her own. Being a creative person in this world can be treacherous territory, and Patty reminds us that you have to find a way to hold on to that, overcoming not only the hostile situations you encounter, but also your own foibles and fears and doubts and self destructiveness. To be creative is to open yourself up. I responded immediately to Patty’s vulnerability mixed with bravery, with her desire to share what she lived through as not only a catharsis for herself but also as a way of using her truth to potentially help someone else going through similar emotions. The greatest gift to Todd and I as filmmakers that we did not expect is that the film itself may have begun a healing process for Patty and the band, who had not spoken about many of these the issues in more than ten years and are now back in touch. Patty is a heroine in the true sense of the word, and, after spending four years literally staring at her everyday, I remain inspired. HIT SO HARD Press Kit 6 CREW BIOGRAPHIES
P. DAVID EBERSOLE director/editor/writer Singled out a decade ago by Filmmaker Magazine as one of "25 New Indie Faces," writer/director/producer P. David Ebersole likes to joke that he is one of the "25 Tired Old Indie Faces." David recently made his prime-‐time directing debut with DESIRE, the first American telenovela on the new Fox-‐owned My Network TV and also directed their hit follow-‐
up novella, WICKED WICKED GAMES starring the inimitable Tatum O'Neal. David's first feature, STRAIGHT RIGHT, premiered as an original cable movie on Sundance Channel; and he co-‐
produced STRANGER INSIDE (HBO), directed by Cheryl Dunye, produced by Jim McKay, Michael Stipe and Effie Brown, which debuted at Sundance and was nominated for four Spirit Awards. As a student writer/director, David scored a rare "double-‐header" winning both Best Undergraduate Film & Director at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts for his project LOVER MAN and the Franklin J Schaffner Award for Best Film/Director at the American Film Institute for his multiple award-‐winning M.F.A. thesis, DEATH IN VENICE, CA. David was founding Artistic Director and Festival Director of the Silver Lake Film Festival, he mentors in Film Independent's "Project:Involve" program, and he has taught film/video production at Pitzer College, Chapman University and USC School of Cinema/TV. Though he is proud to have directed documentary segments for LAWSON LIVE on the Hallmark Network (for legendary Reverend Jim Lawson, a close colleague of Martin Luther King Jr), HIT SO HARD is his first feature length documentary. TODD HUGHES producer/writer As a filmmaker, Todd Hughes first gained notoriety in the early 80s with his underground Ivy League movie outfit Feminette Productions in New York City. Relocating to Hollywood, he scored his first festival hit with the notorious DING DONG in 1995. Todd's first feature THE NEW WOMEN (2001) starred cult superstar Mary Woronov and earned Todd the cover of Filmmaker Magazine as one of the new faces of indie film. Other festival films include HUBBY/WIFEY (2005) and HOT CHICKS (2006). A member of the WGA, Todd was a staff writer for the Fox Television hit WICKED WICKED GAMES starring Tatum O'Neal and has worked on screenplays with Cheryl Dunye, Brian Newkirk and Andre Salas. Todd and P. David wrote the teleplay for Phil Collins' museum piece "soy mi madre" and have recently been collaborating with noted photographer and philanthropist Nigel Barker on a variety of projects. HIT SO HARD marks Todd's first foray into feature producing. Previously he has produced numerous short films including the 2010 fest smash SWIMMING starring Gretchen Phillips and Phranc. CHRISTINA SOLETTI producer Christina Soletti has a diverse background in the film and reality television realm. She began her career in the film world with her involvement in the Silver Lake Film Festival, as Public Relations Director and later as Festival Co-‐Director. The migration to production was a natural move. She worked as an Art Department coordinator on feature films including RENT, SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS and OVER HER DEAD BODY. HIT SO HARD Press Kit 7 A call from an old colleague enticed her into the reality television realm, where she currently works as a producer. Her credits include CW's "Beauty & The Geek"; Vh1's "The Pick Up Artist," and "The OCD Project"; and ABC"s "Opportunity Knocks" and "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition." She is now turning her attention to the documentary genre, as she is compelled by the real life stories that shape our generation. She lives in Los Angeles with her wife, baby & four dogs; and spends her free time blogging about things that make her happy: weddings, babies, dogs, music, film and art for her blog Steady Happy. RODDY BOTTUM composer Roddy Bottum is a rock star best known as the keyboardist for FAITH NO MORE and as a founder of IMPERIAL TEEN. He has been scoring film and television for a decade with many documentaries to his credit. His feature film credits include WHAT GOES UP (2009), KABLUEY (2007) and ADAM & STEVE (2005).
