2006-2007
Royal Oak Public Library
Board of Trustees
Nancy Hollyer, President
The Royal Oak Public Library has operated in its
renovated facility for a full
year; it is operating now
with a dedicated library
fund that provides operational expenses as well as
debt retirement. Appreciation by the taxpayers for
improved Library facilities
and services is demonstrated by dramatic increases in
utilization. In 2007, lending transactions increased by
44% over transactions in 2005 and by 52% over 1998;
the number of visitors to the Library increased by 27%
over visits in 2005. At 24,715 visitors per year, the Library is bringing over 1,000 visitors per day to downtown Royal Oak.
Amy Schell, Vice President
On behalf of the Royal Oak Public Library Board and
staff, I extend our gratitude and appreciation to the residents and taxpayers of the City of Royal Oak. Your support and your confidence is paying dividends every day
through continually improving lending and reference
collections, added electronic resources and programs
that contribute to the cultural tapestry of the Royal Oak
community. Read on for an overview of programming
and operational highlights and improvements.
The mission of the Royal Oak Public
Library is to be an informational,
intellectual, cultural, and recreational
resource for all people; to inspire the
spirit, educate the mind, and be a
center of community pride.

Program Highlights
Library Revenues
• Partnerships with the Zoo, Beaumont Hospital, Wayne
State University, Royal Oak Public Schools, Kiwanis,
Stagecrafters, Royal Oak Community Coalition, OUR
Credit Union and Rotary bring improved collections
and innovative, exciting programs to the community.
• Partnership with the Royal Oak Arts Council has resulted in a standing venue for area artists to display
their work both in the display cases at the entrance
to the Library and on the walls of the newly renovated
Friends Auditorium.
• A commitment to the classics has inspired the Library Board to direct that the long held Royal Oak
Public Library Levy Fund be used to purchase fresh
new copies of classical works for young and old in the
lending collections.
• Use of grant funding from the National Institutes of
Health, the Michigan Center for the Book and the Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation extends the capability of the Library Fund to provide the extras such as
health information programming, author visits, the
support of the Library’s first ever Writer in Residence, Cindy LaFerle, and an extension of Library
computer training capability.
• The Library provided full services to Madison Heights
residents and welcomed some Madison Heights employees while that library was closed for renovation.
