FOREWORD
EYE International is very pleased to present the
new EYE International Film Catalogue, Films
from the Netherlands 2015. The catalogue strives
to give information and full details about the latest features, shorts (narrative as well as experimental and animated) and feature-length and
short documentaries. It is a record of the works
and talents of Dutch directors and producers,
both established and emerging, whose films
deserve attention from international festivals,
distributors and audiences alike.
This year we are very pleased to serve you new
films by such interesting and prolific directors as
Alex van Warmerdam (BORGMAN) with SCHNEIDER
VS. BAX; Boudewijn Koole (KAUWBOY) with BEYOND
SLEEP; David Verbeek (HOW TO DESCRIBE A CLOUD)
with FULL CONTACT and Peter Greenaway with
EISENSTEIN IN GUANAJUATO, just to name a few.
The promotion of Dutch film is continued at all
of the prestigious festivals, such as Berlin,

Iris dreams of learning the craft of filmmaking in Rio de
Janeiro. Her father Pavo seems to have no artistic ambitions until he starts to work on a film about his own
childhood. He enlists the Brazilian 'cinema novo' director Oscar and invests all he has. Iris feels attracted to
Oscar. When he leaves she realizes that Pavo worked on
the film to make her see that art creates selfish monsters unable to choose anything or anyone but art itself.

The ongoing crisis sent society spiraling downward.
Already known for their progressive thinking, the Dutch
government passed a law stating that all people born
between ’45 and ’55 should be euthanized, ‘to give their
grandchildren the future that was removed from them.’
Two men are tasked with the implementation of this
law. Although clearly understaffed, they at least try to
take pride in their work. But as the assignments
increasingly take their toll emotionally, tension rises…
and their work suffers.

Imagine this. Your name is Gus, you’re dead normal
and you live in the most boring village in the whole wide
world. But you walk into your bedroom one day and
there’s an actual Egyptian mummy sitting on your bed.
What do you do? Well, first you jump out of your skin of
course. Then you close your eyes, count to ten, count to
twenty… but it doesn’t help. The mummy is still there…!
Maarten is an ordinary 16-year-old. He likes to hang
around in the park, listen to music, play videogames
and dance as much as possible. Preferably with his
dance partner Roxanne. But almost nobody, especially
not Roxanne, knows he has a metabolic disease that
could end his life. Despite the concerns of his parents,
Maarten wants to live life to the fullest. But with his
body failing him more and more, maybe the time has
come to accept he is not ordinary.

Thirty-two-year-old waster and eternal student Thijs
leads a slovenly and relaxed life of beer, chicks and the
occasional shift at a tedious media megastore. When he
visits his sister's house to do some washing, instead of
his usual encounter with her semi-perfect family, he
meets Lisa, the baby-sitter: a mature sixteen-year-old
with exorbitant ambitions. Without intending to, Lisa
has a profound effect on Thijs, revealing a deeply
ingrained dissatisfaction with his own passive behaviour.
Just as Timo is trying to win back his ex-girlfriend by convincing her of his new and improved life, he and his
friends get caught up in a drugs war. To stay alive, four
ordinary guys need to sell 22 kilos of drugs within a week!

The immature Wyne (32) starts a football team to rebel
against her friends whose lives have become dull and
boring since giving birth or becoming pregnant.
However, after a series of unexpected events, Wyne
finds herself in danger of losing everything she holds
dear...
Only-child Jack has two mothers, and all he wants for
his birthday is a baby brother. But he gets a giant rabbit
instead. Jack’s had enough, so he dons a pair of rabbit
ears and refuses to remove them until he gets a baby
bro. When he finds out where he himself came from –
he was ordered online – he is ecstatic. Easy! But slowly

After Coen receives a disturbing call from an Asian clinic telling him that his brother is very ill, he is unable to
make contact. The next day, however, he receives a
video from his brother saying that all is well and that
he’s back on the road. After a while even these videos
stop and his brother goes officially missing. Eventually,
after weeks of uncertainty and nightmares Coen seeks
closure by deciding to follow the same trail as his brother…
Rik (11) and his dad Paul are bullied by the kids in their
neighbourhood. Rik wishes his dad would be tougher.
Inspired by a mafia movie he saw on TV, Rik fantasizes
about being the son of a mafia boss. Everybody would
show him respect. So when his dad is promoted and
they move to a new town, Rik decides to tell everybody
his dad really is a mafia boss – but what happens when
his lies turn against him?

MONKEY BUSINESS (3D) brings us back to the time before
education was compulsory. Many young children did
not go to school and were exploited in factories. When
orphan Tom manages to escape his orphanage to go to
school, Jet lets him hide at their farm. It is the start of a
summer full of new friendships, lots of mischief and
exciting adventures – while all the time trying to keep
Tom out of the orphanage.

somewhat anxious, but with Mees Kees at the helm,
everything should be just fine. The class look forward to
rehearsing in the afternoons and to making beautiful

staged in a dusty room within a nearby retirement

Casper never knew his father and lives with his mother.
He loves to spend his spare time playing the piano and
he’s really happy when he is accepted into the youth
orchestra. Especially when he becomes friends with
orchestra member Anouk who knows what he’s going

seriously ill. She has cancer. Afraid of what might happen to her, Casper and his best friend Pim decide to
search for his father.
Sam and Do are struggling with love. They have been
together for five years, enjoying their lives and more
than happy. Although they are opposites, they complement and bring out the best in each other. But when Do
gives birth to their son Max, their world is turned
upside down. Doubt, different views on parenting and

Liza was three years old when she was abandoned by
her father Mauro. When she is about to be a parent herself, she tries to contact him, but her efforts are in vain.
But one day, Mauro approaches her and invites her to
visit him in Venice. He takes her on a musical voyage
along the route of the Orient Express: an emotional
road trip through the Balkans. Liza discovers why her
father contacted her: he is terminally ill.

Every day Ana, Sloba and Bojan put their lives at great
risk, simply by going to work. Their jobs are in or next to
the national television building in Belgrade which,
because of the war, has become a strategic target for
NATO bombings. All three force themselves to deal with
the fear in order to hold on to their ordinary lives. But
the concept of “ordinary” ceased to exist some time ago.
On his birthday, hit man Schneider’s target is Ramon
Bax, a writer. It’s an easy job. It’ll be over before noon.
Schneider reluctantly accepts. Bax is recovering from a
night of drugs and alcohol. When his daughter
Francisca arrives, depressed and unhappy, they quarrel
and she starts to cry. Bax suppresses his discomfort
with vodka, a joint and some haphazardly chosen pills.
What seems a simple hit job for Schneider turns out to
be a lot more complicated…

We float above the plains of the Flevopolder, the last
land reclamation project of the Dutch government. We
see how farmers carry out their duties in that ordered
landscape. Over 2000 years ago, the Roman poet Virgil
wrote The Georgics, an ode to farming and to life in the
countryside. When the farmers hear the old texts, they
spontaneously conjure up stories on what has changed,
about the influence of the food industry and about contemporary regulations.
Andy is 23 and living the good life within Shanghai's
sparkling gay scene. But all the time he is on the hunt
for a suitable lesbian girl to propose to, searching the

The Ivorian Cyriaque is one of the illegal refugees who
joined the We Are Here campaign group. These asylum
seekers (whose applications have thus far been denied)
have struggled for the past two years to gain a face, a
voice and a permanent resident permit. Filmmaker
Ramon Gieling makes early contact with Cyriaque, a
musical and spiritual figure, in the makeshift encampment in central Amsterdam and follows him until their
paths diverge, partly because ‘the film has come to an
end’.
In prison Viggo wonders why he developed from a sensitive little boy into a merciless criminal. He decides to
give up crime for good, and immerses himself into his
past to avoid making the same mistakes again. But his

IMPERFECT HARMONY is a film about musical control,
explored through a clash between two maestros: avantgarde rebel and Holland’s best-known composer, Louis
Andriessen, and chief conductor at Amsterdam’s Royal
Concertgebouw Orchestra, Mariss Jansons. The occasion is the orchestra’s 125th jubilee year concert. With
barely a week of rehearsals before the world premiere of
Andriessen’s latest composition Mysteriën, they must
attempt to reconcile their radically differing sensibilities. Will they overcome their musical differences? At

Peter Schuster lives in an institution for the mentally
handicapped. He is able to control his anger issues only
