Spring Summer 2011
What makes a perfect summer? Do you count down the days until barbecue season? Daydream
about your hammock by the lake? Delight in the first steamy, sprinkler-worthy afternoon? When
planning the Spring/Summer 2011 collections, our INDIGO team took inspiration from a host
of exceptional books, toys and gifts that celebrate fair-weather pleasures. Of course, we’ll all read,
relax, rejoice and rejuvenate in our own unique, personal way. Maybe it’ll be digging into a juicy
new book, trying a cottage-life inspired recipe from Trish Magwood’s new In My Mother’s Kitchen
cookbook or outfitting your picnic basket with fresh new gear. However you choose to enjoy the
season, let the sun shine in!
The spring/summer assortment will be available at INDIGO and CHAPTERS stores nationally from April to
July 2011. For images, samples and current pricing, please contact Indigo Public Relations:

Summer
Reading
“We’ll always have Paris.” Humphrey Bogart’s famous line lingers still. And so inspired were we by a roster of new
Paris-themed titles, we’ve put the locale at the top of our reading list this season. The City of Light, as sketched by
Paula McLain in The Paris Wife, captivates. We’re told the story of Ernest Hemingway, but from the perspective
of his first wife, Hadley. We linger in coffee houses, meet icons the likes of Gertrude Stein. Other titles likewise have us
pining for lazy summer afternoons, from The Lake of Dreams, a beautifully detailed follow-up to Kim Edwards’
The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, to the irresistible Tina Fey’s tell-all Bossypants. Happy reading.

Q&A
with Trish Magwood
Indigo: How Is In My Mother’s Kitchen different from your first book?
Magwood: My first book was Dish Entertains. It was about my life at work
at Dish Cooking Studio. This one is about life at home; it’s more casual with
content inspired by my mom and grandmothers. It’s about trying to keep
traditions alive and relevant for family and for today’s busy cooks.
Indigo: What were your favourite desserts as a kid?
Magwood: We did brownies a lot and there’s a recipe here that was from my mom’s best friend’s mother, Auntie
Mary. (They’re cocoa-powder based.) In the summer, my Mom made Blueberry Boy Bait. With a lot of these recipes,
I’ve maintained the names because they’re just so unbelievable. My Mom and Dad have a cottage at Pointe au Baril on
Georgian Bay and a group of women in the ‘60s put together The Cottage Cookbook. It’s still my most beloved cookbook.
Indigo: What was your favourite dinner growing up?
Magwood: To this day, it’s turkey. And I think it’s because my mom always does it. What I like most is the stuffing,
the mashed potatoes and the gravy, so I have all of that in the cookbook. The turkey recipe was really written by my
mom. She took it on as her task to make sure that I had the exact roasting times right, and we tried every bird—freerange to frozen Butterball.
Indigo: In My Mother’s Kitchen, you say that you grew up with dessert daily. Do you continue the tradition?
Magwood: Totally. And I can hear my mother’s voice when I say to my kids: “If you eat your dinner, you’ll get
dessert”—it’s old-fashioned bribery and it’s haunting because I think I even use the same tone that my mother used.

A picture is worth a thousand words—well, actually, in the age of Facebook,

still makes a great gift, especially when slipped into a hand-picked frame, be it
sleek, charming or cheeky. We’ve also just launched Photo Glass exclusively at
www.chapters.indigo.ca/photogifts. With a few simple clicks, you can
have your favourite images printed directly onto flat or curved glass. A Photo
Glass frame can be viewed from both sides and is as much elegant décor
accessory as it is new-generation snapshot.

Q&A
with Eileen Gittins
Founder and CEO of San Francisco-based Blurb, the creative publishing and marketing platform that allows anyone
and everyone to design, publish, market and sell professional-quality books.
Indigo: Blurb shipped over 1.2 million books to more than 60 countries and generated over $45 million in revenue in
2009, and in 2010, was ranked the fastest growing media company on the Inc. 500 List. Why do you think you’ve been
so successful?
Gittins: Very early on, we realized that we are fundamentally in the business of enabling people to tell stories,
whether that story is the story of our family’s favourite meals or whether the story is my blog postings for the year
2010, the story of our vacation or my poetry or whatever. By enabling people’s passions to come out via stories so
beautifully rendered is why we’ve been successful.
Indigo: Cookbooks, portfolios, photo albums: What other innovative Blurb books have you seen?
Gittins:
Memoriam books are becoming popular, books of a person’s life—or a pet; and blog books. We’ve also seen
books to propose marriage, where the last page actually said “will you marry me?” We got an email from that customer
about four days later to tell us ‘she said “yes” ’.
Indigo: Can you share what’s coming for 2011?
Gittins:
We’re forecasting double-digit growth. We’re investing in a ton of new products, so the customer will have
more choice in the physical materials of the book. We’re also investing in branding and have hired an ad agency, and
we’re looking across all kinds of media, even broadcast, cable, network, video – all of it. We’re investing in international
growth. In 2010 we invested in another print location in Edmonton and we’re looking to drive visibility in Canada.
Canada represents about 6-7% of our business, which is a lot. And in 2011, you’ll see us go into additional localized
versions of our product with other languages for other countries.

Get Growing:
An Everyday Guide to High-Impact,
Low-Fuss Gardens
Good-natured Frank Ferragine, aka Frankie Flowers of BT Toronto, CityLine
and City TV News, jokes in the beginning of his book, Get Growing, that he’s
been gardening since he was a baby—literally. After immigrating to Canada
in the 1950s, Ferragine’s grandfather found work in the agricultural region
of Southern Ontario’s Holland Marsh, then with Ferragine’s father opened
Branford Greenhouses in 1975. (The company is now one of the area’s largest
grower-retailer operations.) “I often joke that my family believed in child
labour,” says Ferragine, “the greenhouse was my afterschool program, my
Sunday school, and my summer vacation, and I loved every minute of it.”
Ferragine’s passion for his subject resonates on every page of his new book and is jam-packed with information, tips
and gorgeous instructional and garden-glamour photos from Toronto-based shooter Shannon Ross. Whether one is
lawn-obsessed, wanting to tackle an overrun perennial bed or trying their hand at a vegetable garden, Get Growing is a
must read.
