Tryniski and Ventura make their debut on the 50 and older circuit
For Mike Tryniski,
turning 50 has its advantages.
The milestone birthday, which Tryniski
hit July 26, made him
eligible to join the PBA

Senior Tour during the
summer. Since his birthday occurred toward the
end of the Senior Tour
season, Tryniski was
only eligible for its last
three events.

“I wasn’t really surprised with how I did,”
Tryniski said. “I wanted to win. I knew I
was capable of winning.”
Tryniski said the Senior Tour is more
low-key than the intense atmosphere of the
regular PBA Tour. Tryniski bowled on the
PBA Tour a decade ago.
“The competition is a little different,”
Tryniski said. “There were at least 40 bowlers that were 60 and over.”
Tryniski’s short stint on the Senior Tour
allowed him to renew old friendships.
“It was nice to go out and be back with
my friends from the Tour,” he said. “Wayne
Webb. Mark Williams. Tommy Baker. They
all were out when I was out.”
Tryniski is already making plans to bowl
on an expanded Senior circuit next summer.

Sam Ventura was another familiar name
on the PBA Senior Tour this season. Ventura, who turned 50 earlier this year, competed in all nine Tour events.
“Bowling with some of the guys who
were your idols growing up was really a
blast,” Ventura said. “Listening to their stories was a treat.”
Ventura admitted he had his ups and
downs on the Tour.
“The near misses were tough on my mind
and wallet,” he said. “Battling back from a
bad game makes you stronger in the long
run. I look forward to next year as there will

win over Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. in match play.
Ventura described how he clinched the
match, 247-245:

Walter needing to strike out to close me out.
He strikes in the ninth and 10th but a 10-pin

Webb, despite missing a pair of Senior

September 2010
A Message from SBA President Bob Lazzaro
Welcome back bowlers! By now many of you have already started up league play for
the season. While we haven’t quite put away the golf clubs completely, we’re still excited
to start our bowling adventures…hopefully with improved scores, but undoubtedly with
our teammates and friends for good times and good scores. And when I think about it,
that’s what it’s about for most of us…the friends we’ve made and bowl with every week.
So what do we have in store this season? For starters, we’re in our second year of the
CNY Striker! Together with the SWBA, we launched the paper last season and it was a
success, both in bringing local bowling news to our centers and providing a vehicle for advertisers to reach the bowlers directly. On that same note, the Association website (www.
syracusebowling.com) was completely revamped last year. If you haven’t taken a look at
it, I encourage you to do so and go there for local Association and tournament information.
It will continue to grow and become even better this season.
As we all know, the sport and business of bowling continues to evolve, not only in
Syracuse, but across the country. We will be paying close attention as the Empire State
Bowling Association merges with the New York State Women’s and Youth Associations.
Lessons learned there will help guide us though our own consideration of a similar merger
in the next few years. We will need to know what works, what doesn’t, and how to set,
manage and live up to the expectations of everyone in the Syracuse bowling community.
Also, in this upcoming bowling season, Syracuse
will once again play host to a national tournament,
the USBC Women’s Championships (returning for
WKHÀUVWWLPHVLQFH:HDUHSURXGWRKDYH
thousands of women bowlers from across the nation come to our city and show them what a remarkable bowling community we have here. Stay
tuned here for more news on the tournament as the
season progresses.
That’s it for now. Hopefully I’ll have more news
and updates later on in the season!
Bob Lazzaro
President, Syracuse
USBC Bowling Association, Inc.
Change is coming
As we start the new season, work is underway to bring about the merger of our
three state USBC associations, the Empire
State Bowling Association, the New York
State Women’s Association and New York
State Youth Association.
There will be many challenges to overcome. But in my opinion, this is long overdue. As I’ve said in the past, change is never easy but sometimes it’s necessary. The
CNY Striker will be keeping an eye on the
progress of the state merger as it unfolds
this season. The results will have an impact
on our local associations which SBA president Bob Lazzaro outlined in his article on
this page. Stay tuned.

Merger of
state associations
is on the horizon
Last April, delegates representing the New York State local bowling associations unanimously gave the Empire State USBC Bowling Association authorization to pursue a merger
with the New York State Women’s and New York State Youth associations.
“This is a historic day for the sport of bowling in New York State,” ESBA president
Mike Pettinella said in a press release. “For some time now, the women and youth associations have waited for this merger vote to happen. Speaking for our board of directors, we are eager to work with leaders of the women and youth associations to form an
