A Springfield man is in
custody for allegedly murdering a man at his Golden home
yesterday.
Michael Beatty, of Springfield, was arrested yesterday
afternoon and booked into
the Barry County Jail for the
murder of Ed Smith, 68, of
Golden.
According to Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly,, the
Sheriff ’s Department was
dispatched at 11:18 a.m. yesterday with the report that
there was a “deceased person
in a trailer with possible suspicious activity.”
When officers arrived, Epperly said that there was a lot
of blood at the scene and that
Smith had multiple gun shot
wounds to the head and possibly the chest.
Epperly confirmed that
Deputies Angie Cole and Bill
Watkins secured the scene
while officers set up a roadblock near the Golden Post
Office and stopped each vehicle looking for the murder
suspect
Officers were on the lookout for a white Chrysler 2000.
Epperly said that, while officers were working the road
block and securing the scene,
he went to the Mayo Beach
area where he found the car
wrecked into a tree.
Epperly said, “We had a
person call in and say that the
car had wrecked and that the
driver had fled on foot and
was hiding in the woods near
their house. The Missouri
State Highway Patrol and
Barry County took him into
custody at 12:44 p.m. without
incident.”

On Monday afternoon, an SUV drove into the side of a train passing through Seligman at the
Roller Ridge railroad crossing. There were no reported injuries related to the incident at the time
of the crash.

For the past almost 21
years, the Soroptomist Club
of Barry County has been
working to help women
and girls locally. August will
mark 21 years since the inception of the group, and,
last month, they gave out
$5,000 in scholarships and
grants to area women and
girls and the organizations
who help them.
Soroptomist is a global
organization comprised of
volunteers on the local level
who work to empower and
improve the lives of women
and girls. The organization
supports programs that aid
in social and economic development. There are a variety of grants and assistance
programs available for local
women through Soroptomist.
Within the local Soroptomist chapter, the group f 23
members gives out two different scholarships to graduating high school seniors,
the Sandra Forrester scholarship and the Violet Richardson scholarship. Both
scholarships are awarded to
local girls pursuing different
endeavors in their college
careers.
The Sandra Forester
scholarship was created for
one of the founding charter

the railroad crossing. According to a statement
made by the driver at the
scene, he saw the train, but
when he tried to stop, his
brakes were not working,
and he rolled into the side
of the train.
According to Burgess,
the SUV was dragged
around 110 feet before
coming to a stop at the railroad switch. At the scene,
the driver had no reported
injuries.
The train that runs
through that intersection is
with the Arkansas Missouri
Railway and did not stop after the crash. It is not clear
as to whether the conductor
of the train was aware of the
crash when it occurred.

Department, Barry County
Sheriff ’s Department and
Missouri State Highway
Patrol all responded to the
incident.

Richardson Award for community service and volunteerism
from Soroptomist member Jill LeCompte.

a degree in the arts. This
year, the award was given to
three students from Cassville High School, Kylee
Cotton, Sophia Mueller and
Autumn Scott. Each of the
girls received $300 toward
their college expenses. The
girls also brought samples
of their artwork to show Soroptomist members.
The Violet Richardson
Award is an international
award given to a young girl
who goes above and beyond
in the area of volunteerism.

Last rites were held for
Glen Nicoll, of Cassville, age
88, Monday following his
death at Mercy Hospital last
Thursday evening.
His obituary appears on
page 6A of this week’s Advertiser.
He served 32 years as
Barry County Assessor from
1968 until he retired have
right four-year terms in much
of the time running unop-
posed.
Up until 1940, the County
Assessor did not have an office in the courthouse. He
simply kept the tax books in
his home. The late Harrison
Doty, of Cassville, defeated
Lewis Thomas, of Jenkins,
who had served right years
largely on failing to occupy an
office in the courthouse.
At the time, Doty and one
secretary kept the office open.
In the early 1970’s, the
Missouri Legislature decided
to force statewide reassessment.
Nicoll, who was in office at
the time, underwent a rather
stringent four-year period
of complete reassessment by
State mandate.
According to State law,
the present Assessor, Sherry
Sears, requires ten employees,
two full-time outside inspectors and appraisers and the
other employees in the office
division, personal property,
real estate and commercial
property.

Chamber opts to cancel event in revenue from Walmart sales

When Walmart announced that they would be
opening a store in Seligman,
there was a lot of speculation
as to how much revenue the
new market would generate
for the city. After five months
of collecting revenue, the city
is up $43.993.20 in sales tax
revenue over last year’s numbers.
In 2014, the first five
months of the year yielded
between around $6,000 and
$20,000 monthly. However,
the lowest amount in revenue collected so far in 2015
was $16,743.81, but totals
have been consistently between $21,000 and $25,000
since then.
For the month of May,
the city collected $28,931.68,
which was almost $10,000
more than 2014’s revenue of
$19,595.31 in May.
With all of the additional
revenue generated by stronger sales at existing businesses in 2015 and Walmart’s
presence in the community,
the city council will be able
to plan other projects within
the city with the extra revenue.
The 2015 budget was set
off of prior trends. Now that
significantly more revenue is
coming in with the addition
of Walmart in December
2014, the city will be able to
allocate the funds and have
a better idea of what revenue will continue to be in
the future. Until taxes were
being collected, the city was
unaware of how much extra
revenue they would see with
the addition of the chain
store.
The tax collected by the
city is 2.25 percent. Of that,
1-cent goes to General Revenue, 1/2-cent goes to capitol improvement, 1/2-cent
goes to streets and 1/4-cent
goes to parks. City Clerk
Brian Nichols hopes that the
council approves to use part
of the funds going to general
revenue to clean up the city.
Nichols also said that they
are fixing up the bathrooms
and putting on new siding.
Epperly continued, “We
got a search warrant for the
trailer. The suspect was apparently living there with Smith.
He did get into it with someone because the suspect had
strangulation-like marks with
bruising around his neck.”
Officers also found a .22
caliber rifle at the trailer, but
Epperly said, “The rifle was
laying there in the yard, but
consistency with that doesn’t
appear that it was the weapon
used.” Epperly said that they
are obtaining a search warrant
for the car and will continue to
look for the murder weapon.
To add to the oddity of the
crime, Smith was stripped of
his clothing and it was piled
on his bed in the trailer and
soaked in gasoline. Epperly
said, “There was a gas can in
the bedroom, and the bed was
saturated. They tried to set a
fire, but it went out. We think

it was to make it look like a
house fire.”
When officers found Beatty in the woods, he was inebriated, according to Epperly. He
said, “Detective Henry read
him his Miranda Rights, but
we will be interviewing him
today now that he has sobered
up and see if he will tell us
what happened.”
Epperly added, “It went
well taking him into custody.
He planned to get out of there
and had a bag with him. We
were lucky that the didn’t head
toward Arkansas or we might
still be looking for him.”
The investigation is still
ongoing, and no formal
charges have been filed. Beatty is being held in the Barry
County Jail on a 24-hour hold
for murder. Smith’s autopsy
is scheduled for tomorrow,
Thursday morning, at 8:30
a.m.

the idea of an evening 5K.
We think that is something
a little different than other
races. However, we think it
is just too hot in July.”
For the future, the
Chamber plans to change
the 5K to a less sweltering time to make it more
friendly for area runners.
Artherton explained, “Last
year, we had over 100 participants sign up to run
the race. However, due to
extreme head, we only had
around 60 that were able
to attend and complete the
race. We want to have an
event that is not just miserably hot for our participants, not to mention the
heat can be dangerous, and
we always want to make
sure our events are safe for
our community members
and out of town guests.”
As far as a future plan,
the 5K dates are up in the
air for now. Currently,
Artherton is seeking volunteers to serve on a 5K committee that will organize
the event. She said, “We are
considering have a 5K in
the fall but have not made
a decision as to the exact
date.”

After discussing issues with the July Friday
Squared event originally
slated for July 10, the Cassville Area Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors unanimously decided
to do away with the event
in favor of a 5K only later
in the year.
According to Mindi
Artherton, Chamber director, the event turnout was
declining. She said, “Friday Squared has been a fun
summertime event for our
community. Unfortunately,
our attendance numbers
have declined. Due to the
expenses associated with
the event and the low attendance numbers, we decided
it wasn’t a great fit for our
community.”
Other factors that played
into the decision was the
extreme heat experienced
in July. Instead of continuing the Friday Squared
tradition, the Chamber is
electing to host just a 5K
at some other point during
the year instead.
Friday Squared was first
held in July and August of
2010. Then, they added a
May event in 2011, as well.
By 2012, the Chamber had
dropped the event back to
just July and August before
finally going to just July in
2013 and 2014.
Each year, the Friday
Squared events focused
around community fun
with an evening movie on
the courthouse lawn and
extended hours for businesses downtown. Businesses would stay open late,
food vendors set up and the
Cassville YMCA and Cassville Library held events for
kids to participate in.
One aspect of the Friday Squared event that did
make it a popular community experience was the
SnoGlo 5K the Chamber
added to the roster in 2013.

serve the underserved populations of Southwest Missouri, Access Family Care
Medical & Dental Clinics
provided in-school dental
care to 1,342 children, during the 2014 – 2015 school
year. This care was provided
through the Portable Dental
Program. The Portable Dental Program is a full service
Dental Clinic which is actually taken into schools to ensure children have access to
quality dental care.
The Portable Dental Program provides a wide array
of services from basic dental screenings to providing
dental fillings and tooth extractions. The program is
staffed by dentists and dental
hygienists who are employed
by Access Family Care.
The Portable Dental Program served children in the
following school districts
and agencies: Joplin School
District, McDonald County
School District, Shell Knob
School District, Exeter
School District, Southwest
School District, YMCAHeritage Youth Development Center, Mt. Vernon
United Migrant Opportunity
Services (UMOS), and Mt.
Vernon Head Start. Through
the Portable Dental Program,
Access Family Care Medical
& Dental Clinics supported
$130,753 in charity care.
Kristi Dobbs, a dental
hygienist, said; “Serving the
children of Jasper, McDonald, Lawrence, Newton and
Barry counties through portable dental services is truly
a great honor and pleasure.
These children rely on our
potable dental teams to be
there year in and year out,
because we are their dental
home. For this reason alone,
it is absolutely essential to
make sure that we are providing the ultimate in dental
care to all the children that
we care for under portable
dental services. Whether we
are only providing preventative services, helping them
on their way to dental res-

been unable to have their

by June 20th 2015 in order for mowing to resume.
This includes anything in the ground or in boxes

Glen Dale Nicoll was born
in Kansas City, on October
20, 1926, to Woolford (Colonel) and Mary Nicoll. He
went home to be with his Savior on June 4, 2015. To family
and friends he was affectionately known as Sheik.
While attending high
school he worked as a soda
jerk at Wooten Drug Store.
He graduated Cassville High
School in 1945 and enlisted
in the Army. In 1946, he married Helen Virginia Horine.
To this union two sons were
born. Christopher Glen and
Scott Alexander. Helen died
in 1995.
Glen was an interior decorator until he was elected
County Assessor in 1968. He
was elected to eight terms and
held this office for 32 years.
He was elected President of
the Missouri Assessors Association in 1994 and served on
the Executive Board for three
years. He was a member of
Cassville Rotary Club where
he was a past president, secretary and song leader. He was a
member of Masons, Shriners
and the American Legion.
He was a life-long mem-
ber of First Christian Church,
serving as an Elder, Deacon
and song leader. He taught the
High School Sunday School
class for many years and enjoyed influencing young lives.
Glen married Frances Liddle on February 14, 1997.
He was preceded in death
by his parents, wife Helen,
two sons and brother, Tom.
He is survived by his wife,
Fran; two stepdaughters, Sue
Hailicka and her husband,
Paul and Sharon Blackketter; a step grandson, Brandon; two nieces, Ann Lassiter
and her husband, Jim and
Kay Baker and nephew, Nick
Nicoll and his wife, Laurie.
Great nephews and nieces,
Jon Maloney, Laura Alipio,
Matt Cardin, Dinah Cardin
and Kim Nicoll; great-great
nieces and nephews, LeeAnn

at 5 p.m. and end at dusk. The
event is open to the general
public and free of charge.
There will be a ‘69 Plymouth Belvedere, 4-door slant
6 automatic that has been donated to the Senior Citizens
Center in Cassville by Carroll
and Sue Craig. It will be raffled
off on June 17 at 12 p.m. at the
center.
The money from the raffle will be used to help fund

organization with members
within a 75-mile radius of
Cassville. The Cassville Cruisers has a goal of trying to be as
supportive as they can of local
community groups.
Each year, they give away
two scholarships to students
that attend the Scott Regional
Technology Center in Monett
and plan on attending college
in the welding or automotive
field. They also raise funds for
other groups, as well.
Larry Daniels, treasurer of
the Cassville Cruisers, said,

classic cars and enjoy some
pickin’ and grinnin’. Our local

soloist on the Gaither Homecoming Video Series, will
appear on Sunday, June 14,
in Cassville at the Blessing
Heights Church. The concert
is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

According to Missouri
State Parks, the renovation
of the CCC Lodge at Roaring
River State Park is underway
and should be completed in
the spring.
The announcement that
the lodge would be renovated and turned into guest
rooms and meeting space
came at the park’s informational meeting in September
of last year. Missouri State
Parks director Bill Bryan
made the announcement
that the $1.25 million project
would be completed and taken out of a $20 million fund
given to the department out
of General Revenue by the
Missouri Legislature. When
State Parks did not use the
full amount by the end of the
fiscal year, the funds were not
reappropriated, leaving the
project up in the air temporarily.
However, State Parks
opted to go ahead with the
project and chose a bid by the
Construction Services Group
out of Neosho. The construc-
tion company’s estimate for
the project was one of nine
bids received and came in at a
base bid of $1,075,500. Construction Service Group also
plans to subcontract part of
the work.
According to Steph Deidrick, information officer
for Missouri State Parks, the
project is on track to be completed by the spring. Bryan
initially hoped the renovations would be complete before Opening Day 2016, but
that is yet to be determined.
According to Deidrick,
“The completed lodge will
have six units that sleep up to
four and include a bedroom,
kitchen and a living room.
A seventh unit will feature
a second bedroom and will
sleep six. Plans also include
a meeting room with commercial kitchen on the lower
level for special events. Work
on the outside of the building
will include repairs and restoration, but will not chance
the rustic character of the
structure.”

Barry County’s Soroptomist raises money to sup-
port the various grants
and scholarships each year
through fundraisers. The
group members sell packaged nuts around the holidays, and they also host a potato bake each year around

Anybody who is interested in some farm fresh
food will be excited to know
that the quaint town of Purdy will be hosting a farmers’
market this summer beginning in the middle of July.
The Purdy City Council
gave the go ahead at Monday night’s meeting and
mentioned they thought the
farmers’ market is a great
idea. Charles Fletcher and
James Fuller are behind this
operation and hope that
it will bring people from
neighboring towns to come
and enjoy the fresh foods
that Purdy will have to offer.
The market will be held
in the parking lot by the
Purdy Library and is going
to be sponsored by the Purdy Spanish Program.
The farmers’ market will
be open to anybody who
wants to sell their items,
and there isn’t a fee to join.
MSHP to participate in Operation Dry Water
Colonel J. Bret Johnson,
superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the Patrol’s
participation in Operation
Dry Water. Operation Dry
Water is a national campaign in which marine law
enforcement officers from
across the country coordinate special patrols during
the last weekend in June
to keep our waterways safe
from boaters operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Troopers will
focus their efforts over the
weekend of June 26 through
28 to detect and apprehend
intoxicated operators.
Missouri boat operators
found to have a blood alcohol content of .08 percent
or greater will be arrested
for boating while intoxicated. Intoxicated boat operators endanger themselves,
their passengers, and other
boaters utilizing our many
waterways.
Last year, 585 local,
state, and federal agencies
participated in a weekend
long event of heightened
BWI enforcement known as
Operation Dry Water. Officers removed 318 intoxicated boat operators from
the water. In addition, law
enforcement officers made
contact with over 146,000
boaters concerning BWI or
boating safety enforcement
and awareness. From 2009
to 2014, over 1,800 BWI operators have been removed
from the water by law enforcement officers during

In 2014, Missouri troopers arrested a total of eight
people for boating while
intoxicated, contacted 431
vessels and 1,390 boaters,
and issued 72 boating violation summonses and 390
warnings on Missouri waterways. Marine operations
troopers also issued 29
summonses for non-boating violations during the
2014 Operation Dry Water
weekend. Special enforcement operations will continue throughout the summer months. Boaters are
reminded that designating
a sober skipper is always the
safest bet if alcohol is going
to be included in their boating experience.

On June 4, 24 ladies
played golf at the Cassville
course.
Cheryl Ludwig had a hole
in one and created a lot of excitement.
The game of the day was a
four-person scramble.

Jacobs said, “We have had
about twenty kids sign up for
the camp so far.” There are
approximately ten volunteers
that help with the camp each
day. “We think it is good for
each kid to have some oneon-one time with an instructor,” said Jacobs.
Jacobs had the idea of
starting the golf camp after
she heard of a camp that pro
golf instructor, Rick Grayson
hosts in the Nixa, Springfield and Ozark area.
Jacobs thought it was a
great idea and decided Cassville needed a program similar to that. “Our purpose is to
get kids more involved and
excited about golf. Hopefully we can start a league and
more kids will join the Cassville golf team when they get
older.”
Jacobs says it takes a little
longer for the little kids to
get started, but for the most
part, they are all catching on
fairly quick and really enjoying the camp. “Not only is it
fun but it gives the kids lessons on anger management
and proper etiquette on the
golf course,” said Jacobs.
The Cassville Ladies golf
league has recently purchased two thousand dollars
worth of golf club sets for the
Cassville Elementary and
Middle School. The student
use them during their P.E.
classes, and they’ve received
some good feedback from
school administration that
the kids really enjoy them.

the game of golf.

is very excited about the new
summer golf camp that has
started this year.
Boys and girls from the
ages of 6-12 are all welcome
to join the camp at the Cassville Golf Course that will be
going on for a week in June,
a week in July and for two
days in August. It is $25 for
one clinic, or $60 for all three
clinics. Clinics run from 8:30
a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
The camp will break
down the basics for the kids
starting with grip, aim, setup,
putting, chipping, pitching
and full swing. Clubs are
provided, but if a camp attendee has their own set they
are welcome to bring them.

Caney Valley Speedway Saturday night. The win was
worth $2,000, bringing his
weekend total to $4,000.

for the 30 lap feature and led
the first six laps before Ryan
Gustin, of Marshalltown,

on lap seven. Gustin would
lead until sixth starting Wells
would get around him on lap
twelve and hold on for the
win. Gotschall would get
by Gustin on lap twenty and
finish second. Gustin, Jason

Southwest Schools is nearing completion of the track put in last year. Issues with the size of the
oval and slope led to the construction company having to fix the track. Repairs are expected to be
completed soon, and it will be reopened for public use.

Repairs almost complete at new Southwest track

After issues discovered
last fall regarding the new
track put in at Southwest
Schools, the track is finally
almost complete, and this
time, the right way.
The Southwest School
District opted to put in a new
track at the school last year
with a price tag of around
$350,000 from the school’s
general revenue building
fund. The school’s plans
were to use the track for
the school’s boys and girls
track and field teams as well
as cross country teams and
physical education classes.
As an added bonus, the
school was available to residents of the school district to
use for walking and jogging
for exercise.
The project was bid and
completed in the fall, but issues were discovered with
the track after it was completed by construction company Nabholz Construction
Services. Southwest Superintended Bob walker said, “Last
fall, it was discovered that the
oval was slightly off from its
required dimensions, as well
as not having the necessary
slope in places.”
To remedy the issue,
Nabholz was contacted and
brought back out to complete
the necessary repairs to the
track so that it can be utilized
once again. Currently, a sign
hangs on the gate alerting
students and residents of the
district to the status of the
track and to prevent it from
being used.
The changes made to
the track include fixing the
dimensions and the slope.
Walker said, “Extra area is
being created around the entire perimeter of the oval to
ensure the track will meet
official specifications and
measure correctly. In addition, the lack of slope and
crowning problems will be
resolved. The corrective measures have all been done. We
are waiting for the track to
receive a new asphalt overlay
that will result in a smooth
surface, tying in and covering the corrective base work.”
Walker said that the area
will be reopened for use as
soon as the overlay is completed. He said, “We are waiting for the asphalt overlay to
be applied. Recent rains have
delayed this process. As soon
as we have a decent break

Mercy services meeting to
be held at Central Crossing
On June 17, beginning
at 11:30 a.m. Chris Hoge,
Director of Therapy Services for Mercy Hospital,
and Nick Whelan, Doctor
of Physical Therapy, will be
at Central Crossing Senior
Center to discuss the opening of the new Mercy Therapy Services.
Mercy Hospital entered
into a lease arrangement
with Shell Knob Seniors,
Inc. to operate a therapy
services facility in the new
addition to the Central
Crossing Senior Center.
This will be an incredible
advantage for area residents
who require physical therapy and don’t want to drive
to other facilities in neighboring communities.
Hoge will describe the
services to be offered, including hours of operation and will introduce
Dr. Whelan, who will be
on staff at the new facility. Both men will be available to answer any specific
questions you may have and
how you can take advantage
of the services Mercy will
be offering. Everyone is invited.

Over 1,000 local Chapter FFA Officers and 186
advisers from 134 chapters
attended the annual LEAD
training. The LEAD (Learn,
Educate, Advance, and Develop) training is designed
to help prepare each officer team for their term of
service for the 2015-2016
school year.
The officers were provided team-building and
bonding opportunities, the
opportunity to share activities, create a code of conduct, work on a plan for
chapter recruitment, and
learn how to effectively implement a plan of activities.
They also had the opportunity to attend breakout sessions on leading a meeting,
planning events, focus on
the FFA image, and time
management skills.
The choice to become
active team members and
make a positive difference
in the lives of local FFA
members, school and community was evident at each
site. These conferences are
sponsored by the Missouri
FFA Leadership Fund and
were held May 26 through
29 throughout Missouri.
The facilitators consisted of past state officers,
and they were divided into a
north and a south team. The
trainings were held at 8 different locations throughout
the state. Through interactive workshops the facilitators encouraged the officer
teams to reach outside their
comfort zone to provide
leadership opportunities for
their local chapters.
The FFA is a national
youth organization of over
610,000 student members
preparing for leadership
and careers in the science,
business and technology of
agriculture with 338 chapters and more than 25,800
members in Missouri. The
FFA strives to make a positive difference in the lives
of students by developing
their potential for premier
leadership, personal growth
and career success through
agricultural education.

announced that the annual
Stones Prairie picnic will be
held on Friday, July 17, with
serving beginning at 6 p.m.
The picnic will be held on the
church grounds located two
and a half miles northwest of
Purdy.
In case of inclement weather, the picnic will be held on
Saturday, July 18.
The traditional menu will
consist of hamburgers, chips,
hot dogs, bratwurst sandwiches, ice cream, beverages and
an abundance of homemade
desserts.
The event will feature
games, bake goods, a country

operations. Sergeant Green
and his wife are the parents
of two children.
Corporal Thomas L. Hall
was promoted to sergeant in
his current assignment as a
canine handler in Troop D,
Zone 17. Hall was appointed
to the Patrol on July 1, 1995,
and after graduating from
the Patrol Academy, as a
member of the 70th Recruit
Class, he was assigned to
Troop B, Zone 5, Adair and
Schuyler counties. In 2000,
he transferred into the Troop
B canine unit and in 2001,
was promoted to corporal.
In 2002, he transferred to the
Troop D canine unit, Zone
17. Hall is a native of Iowa
City, Iowa, and graduated
from Iowa City High School.
Before being appointed to
the Patrol, he graduated from
Truman State University in
Kirksville, Missouri. He and
his wife Jenny have two sons,
Brady and Jordan.

Corporal Mark D. Green
was promoted to the rank
of sergeant and will remain
in his current assignment as
assistant zone supervisor of
marine operations in Troop
D, Zone 21. Green was born
in Springfield, Missouri, and
graduated in 1987, from
Glendale High School in
Springfield. He later earned a
bachelor’s degree in marketing from Baker University,
Baldwin, Kansas, in 1991.
Green was appointed to the
Patrol on August 1, 1993, as
a member of the 66th Recruit
Class. After graduating from
the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy, Green was
assigned to Troop D, Zone 4,
serving in Stone and Taney
counties. On July 1, 2000, he
was promoted to the rank of
corporal and designated assistant zone supervisor in
Zone 4, Taney County, and
later in Zone 15, Stone County, from 2004-2009. On April
1, 2009, Green was promoted
to sergeant and assigned as
zone supervisor of Zone 10,
