 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 
17 APRIL 2016
“CALLING JOYFUL MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH”
Today, one week after Sunday Mass-goers heard Christ Jesus Risen from the dead tell Saint Peter: “follow Me”,
the Church celebrates the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. It is the hope of Saint Peter’s successor Pope
Francis, that on this day “all the Baptized may experience the joy of belonging to the Church and rediscover
that the Christian vocation, just like every particular vocation, is born from within the People of God, and is a
gift of Divine Mercy.”
The joy of belonging to the Church is something that finds its summit and source of
expression in the encounter with Christ Jesus Risen from the dead. This is the way it
was for His disciples fearful and doubting in the Upper Room, labouring on the Sea of
Tiberias, and downcast on the Road to Emmaus. And this is the way it is for us, His
disciples who, two thousand years after His Passion, Death, and Resurrection, come
home for Sunday Mass and recognize - in the midst of our post 9/11 fears, our post
Sandy tears, and our pre-Election doubts - “it is the Lord” in the breaking of the bread
and there-in experience the Joy of belonging to the Church!
In the midst of our Sunday-discovery, disciples of Christ can rediscover the universal call of Jesus to “follow
Me”. Follow Me in your fidelity to your spouse. Follow Me in your obedience to your parents. Follow Me in
your care for the least of My brethren: the elderly, the hungry, the naked, the thirsty, the homeless, the
imprisoned, and the sick (please, if you haven’t yet answered the 2016 Catholic Ministries Appeal use the form
on the following page and make your pledge today). Follow Me in your service to others as Doctors and
Nurses. Follow Me in your defense of the basic human rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
The Pope, in his Message for the 2016 World Day of Prayer for
Vocations reminds us that the Christian vocation to follow Jesus is
a gift. That awareness is what traditionally leads followers of Christ
to ask: Lord, how can I put this gift at the service of not just those
at home, work, school, or nation, but at the service of everyone? It
is at this time writes the Pope, “after we have reached a certain
maturity (that Christ) bestows on us a specific vocation”; namely
Priesthood or Religious Life!
If we are going to see today’s young Freeporters from Dodd Middle School and Freeport High School join the
ranks of fellow Freeporters Sister Dorothy Lynch C.I.J., Monsignor Charles Swiger, Brother Pierre Toussaint, and
Mr. Odalis Rodriguez in these “specific vocations”, then these young Freeporters must see old Freeporters who
have reached a certain maturity, joyful in our membership and service to the Church.

X A MESSAGE FROM THE POPE X
MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS
ON THE OCCASION OF THE 53rd WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
FOR VOCATIONS
Theme: The Church, Mother of Vocations
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
It is my great hope that, during the course of this Extraordinary
Jubilee of Mercy, all the baptized may experience the joy of
belonging to the Church and rediscover that the Christian
vocation, just like every particular vocation, is born from within
the People of God, and is a gift of divine mercy. The Church is
the House of mercy, and it is the “soil” where vocations take
root, mature and bear fruit.
For this reason, on the occasion of the 53rd World Day of Prayer
for Vocations, I invite all of you to reflect upon the apostolic
community, and to give thanks for the role of the community in
each person’s vocational journey. In the Bull of Induction for
the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, I recalled the words of the
venerable Saint Bede, describing the call of Saint Matthew:
“Miserando atque eligendo” (Misericordiae Vultus, 8). The Lord’s merciful action forgives our sins and opens us to
the new life which takes shape in the call to discipleship and mission. Each vocation in the Church has its origin in the
compassionate gaze of Jesus. Conversion and vocation are two sides of the same coin, and continually remain
interconnected throughout the whole of the missionary disciple’s life.
Blessed Paul VI, in his exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi, described various steps in the process of evangelization. One
of these steps is belonging to the Christian community (cf. no. 23), that community from which we first received the
witness of faith and the clear proclamation of the Lord’s mercy. This incorporation into the Christian community
brings with it all the richness of ecclesial life, particularly the sacraments. Indeed, the Church is not only a place in
which we believe, but it is also an object of our faith; it is for this reason that we profess in the Credo: “I believe in the
Church”.
The call of God comes to us by means of a mediation which is communal. God calls us to become a part of the
Church and, after we have reached a certain maturity within it, he bestows on us a specific vocation. The vocational
journey is undertaken together with the brothers and sisters whom the Lord has given to us: it is a con-vocation. The
ecclesial dynamism of the call is an antidote to indifference and to individualism. It establishes the communion in
which indifference is vanquished by love, because it demands that we go beyond ourselves and place our lives at the
service of God’s plan, embracing the historical circumstances of His holy people.
On this day dedicated to prayer for vocations, I urge all the faithful to assume their responsibility for the care and
discernment of vocations. When the Apostles sought someone to take the place of Judas Iscariot, Saint Peter
brought together one hundred and twenty of the brethren (cf. Acts 1:15); and in order to choose seven deacons, a
group of disciples was gathered (cf. 6:2). Saint Paul gave Titus specific criteria for the selection of presbyters
(cf. Titus 1:5-9). Still today, the Christian community is always present in the discernment of vocations, in their
formation and in their perseverance (cf. Apost. Ex. Evangelii Gaudium, 107).
Vocations are born within the Church. From the moment a vocation begins to become evident, it is necessary to
have an adequate “sense” of the Church. No one is called exclusively for a particular region, or for a group or for an
ecclesial movement, but rather for the Church and for the world. “A sure sign of the authenticity of a charism is its
ecclesial character, its ability to be integrated harmoniously into the life of God’s holy and faithful people for the good
Continued on the next page . . .
of all” (ibid., 130). In responding to God’s call, young people see their own ecclesial horizon expand; they are able to
consider various charisms and to undertake a more objective discernment. In this way, the community becomes the
home and the family where vocations are born. Candidates gratefully contemplate this mediation of the community
as an essential element for their future. They learn to know and to love their brothers and sisters who pursue paths
different from their own; and these bonds strengthen in everyone the communion which they share.
Vocations grow within the Church. In the course of formation, candidates for various vocations need to grow in
their knowledge of the ecclesial community, overcoming the limited perspectives that we all have at the beginning.
To that end, it is helpful to undertake some apostolic experience together with other members of the community, for
example: in the company of a good catechist, to communicate the Christian message; together with a religious
community, to experience the evangelization of the peripheries sharing in the life of the cloister, to discover the
treasure of contemplation; in contact with missionaries, to know more closely the mission ad gentes; and in the
company of diocesan priests, to deepen one’s experience of pastoral life in the parish and in the diocese. For those
who are already in formation, the ecclesial community always remains the fundamental formational environment,
towards which one should feel a sense of gratitude.
Vocations are sustained by the Church. After definitive commitment, our vocational journey within the Church does
not come to an end, but it continues in our willingness to serve, our perseverance and our ongoing formation. The
one who has consecrated his life to the Lord is willing to serve the Church wherever it has need. The mission of Paul
and Barnabas is a good example of this readiness to serve the Church. Sent on mission by the Holy Spirit and by the
community of Antioch (cf. Acts 13, 1-4), they returned to that same community and described what the Lord had
worked through them (cf. 14: 27). Missionaries are accompanied and sustained by the Christian community, which
always remains a vital point of reference, just as a visible homeland offers security to all who are on pilgrimage
towards eternal life.
Among those involved in pastoral activity, priests are
especially important. In their ministry, they fulfil the
words of Jesus, who said: “I am the gate of the
sheepfold […] I am the good shepherd” (Jn 10: 7, 11).
The pastoral care of vocations is a fundamental part of
their ministry. Priests accompany those who are
discerning a vocation, as well as those who have
already dedicated their lives to the service of God and
of the community.
All the faithful are called to appreciate the ecclesial
dynamism of vocations, so that communities of faith
can become, after the example of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, like a mother’s womb which welcomes the gift
of the Holy Spirit (cf. Lk 1: 35-38). The motherhood of
the Church finds expression in constant prayer for vocations and in the work of educating and accompanying all
those who perceive God’s call. This motherhood is also expressed through a careful selection of candidates for the
ordained ministry and for the consecrated life. Finally, the Church is the mother of vocations in her continual support
of those who have dedicated their lives to the service of others.
We ask the Lord to grant to all those who are on a vocational journey a deep sense of belonging to the Church; and
that the Holy Spirit may strengthen among Pastors, and all of the faithful, a deeper sense of communion,
discernment and spiritual fatherhood and motherhood.
Father of mercy, who gave Your Son for our salvation and Who strengthens us always with the gifts of Your Spirit,
grant us Christian communities which are alive, fervent and joyous, which are fonts of fraternal life, and which
nurture in the young the desire to consecrate themselves to You and to the work of evangelization. Sustain these
communities in their commitment to offer appropriate vocational catechesis and ways of proceeding towards each
one’s particular consecration. Grant the wisdom needed for vocational discernment, so that in all things the
greatness of Your merciful love may shine forth. May Mary, Mother and guide of Jesus, intercede for each Christian
community, so that, made fruitful by the Holy Spirit, it may be a source of true vocations for the service of the holy
People of God.

THE REAL GOAL
With over eight months left in our 2016 Catholic Ministries Appeal Campaign (CMA), the
Spirit of Generosity has surfaced more than two-thirds of the $74,900.00 that Bishop
Murphy has asked us to raise. Thank you. I am glad and rejoicing that Our Holy Redeemer
will once again find favour with God and not only reach our 2016 CMA goal but surpass it.
While the amount pledged thus far ($53,906.00) represents more than two-thirds of the
amount of our goal ($74,900.00), the number of pledges (144) represents a little more than
one quarter of the number of pledges (500) that I have asked for during this year’s
campaign.
Please, if you have never made a Catholic Ministries Appeal pledge in the past, I ask you to
strongly consider making one today; not simply to help Our Holy Redeemer reach any
“campaign goals” but to more importantly help Our Holy Redeemer reach “the real goal” of
the 2016 CMA: the hungry, thirsty, naked, homeless, imprisoned, elderly, sick, infirmed, …

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
March Madness with college basketball teams began in March and carried over into April
with victories for the Villanova men’s team and the University of Connecticut women’s
team. The eighth graders of The De La Salle School are engaged in their own version of
March Madness this month too. Although it pertains to colleges it is not occurring in the
gym, but rather in the Assembly Room and instead of a basketball on hardwood it
involves a PowerPoint presentation on a SMARTBoard.
Each of the fifteen members of the class selected a college or university in which they
are interested and prepared a brief synopsis of the school and shared it with the other
members of our school community. Catholic schools like the College of the Holy Cross,
well known schools like Stanford University, state schools like Mary Washington College, and schools far away like
the University of Miami were among those presented.
Since our students will most likely be the first in their family to attend college it is helpful for them to learn some
vocabulary associated with higher education and to fuel their aspirations so they are not hesitant to dream big.

FAITH AND MUSIC
Notes from our Music Director, Michael Crouse
How about another exciting Concert Series on the Mile?!
Last summer Our Holy Redeemer sponsored our second concert
series at 175 Woodcleft Avenue, also home of our weekly "Mass on
the Waterfront". Under the direction of Michael Crouse, we provided
six evenings of wonderful and varied entertainment, culminating with
a sacred and secular program performed by members of the Our Holy
Redeemer Choir and the “Greater Voices of Praise Choir” from the
Greater Second Baptist Church of Freeport. Other evenings featured
artists such as These Three Tenors, the Freeport High School Alumni,
the Voices, and more. Many in attendance have been asking if we
are going to do it again...and the answer is...with your help...YES!
We are asking for both your input and your donations to raise enough funds to once again support this
summer's series. At the end of this page there are a few questions that will help us to plan the best
evenings for these programs, so that as many of you as possible may attend.
We also plan to create another decorative plaque with the names of each person, business, or family who
donates $100.00 dollars (or more) towards the funding of the series, which will be displayed throughout
the concert series at 175 Woodcleft Avenue.
We hope many more will take advantage of these wonderful evenings of music, and we need your help in
spreading the word!
It would be of great assistance if you would take the time to answer the following questions, and then
return the questionnaire to the rectory by _________________________:
1. Were you able to attend any of the concerts last summer?
If yes, how many? _________ Did you find it an enjoyable evening?

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
Have you heard Jesus’ voice? The fact that you are reading this may be a good indication that
you have! Why, do we need to hear His voice? As Jesus said: “My sheep hear My voice; I know
them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish” (See John
10:27-30). As Jesus plainly states, in order to receive eternal life we need to hear His voice. We
need to be among His sheep. Where and how does Jesus speak to us? In many places and in
many different ways: When we come to Mass, whenever we read or listen to Scripture being
read, He is speaking to us. If we listen, that is, if we obey, we are hearing His voice. He also
speaks to us in our brothers and sisters, particularly in those who are the neediest. Have you
contributed yet to the 2016 Catholic Ministries Appeal? This would be one good way to show
that we are listening to His voice. It is worthwhile for as He says of those who listen to Him: “I
give them eternal life.”

Courage is a group of Catholic men and women who experience same-sex
attractions and who are committed to helping one another to live chaste
lives marked by prayer, fellowship and mutual support. Their members
are guided by caring priest chaplains who offer reconciliation and direction
for the spiritual life. Together they pursue the Five Goals of Courage,
which were developed by the first Courage group in New York City in
1980 and still guide all of our meetings and work:
The goals are read at the start of each meeting and each member is called to practice them in daily life. Here are the
Goals in their entirety:
1. To live chaste lives in accordance with the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching on homosexuality. (Chastity)
2. To dedicate our entire lives to Christ through service to others, spiritual reading, prayer, meditation,
individual spiritual direction, frequent attendance at Mass, and the frequent reception of the sacraments
of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. (Prayer and Dedication)
3. To foster a spirit of fellowship in which we may share with one another our thoughts and experiences,
and so ensure that no one will have to face the problems of homosexuality alone. (Fellowship)
4. To be mindful of the truth that chaste friendships are not only possible but necessary in a chaste Christian
life; and to encourage one another in forming and sustaining these friendships. (Support)
5. To live lives that may serve as good examples to others. (Good Example/Role Model)
They presently have a men’s group in Nassau County. Please call (516) 623-1400, ext. 190 and leave your name and
phone number and someone will get back to you, or email [email protected]. Confidentiality and anonymity

PRIVATE AND ANONYMOUS ONLINE HELP 24/7
Many people have found themselves suffering with an addiction to pornography. God
says, “My saving power will rise on you like the sun and bring healing like the sun’s
rays” (Malachi 4:2). You CAN overcome pornography and other unhealthy sexual
behaviors with help from RECLAIM Sexual Health (Visit their website www.
ReclaimsexualHealth.com). Get help for yourself or help others. It is the latest Brain
Science cutting-edge technology.
The Brain Science of Change & Theology of the Body is God’s way out. In
1 Corinthians 10:13 it says, “No trial has come to you but what is human, God is faithful
and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial He will also
provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.” Pornography is an addiction. It enslaves the soul and deep
shame is connected to it but healing and recovery is possible.
If you or someone you know has a porn addiction, please log onto the Reclaim website at:
www.IntegrityRestored.com. Here you will learn about the pornography epidemic in America and how porn affects
men, women, children and teens. You will learn about the addictiveness of pornography and the recovery process.
The website takes a unique approach by incorporating Catholic spirituality into the recovery process. Porn reduces
the human person to an object for one’s selfish pleasure which is in direct opposition to the beauty of the whole
human person that God created in His image and likeness.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
 MENSAJE DEL PASTOR 
17 DE ABRIL DE 2016
ÉL RESUCITARÁ
¡“El Poderoso ha hecho grandes cosas por mí”! (San Lucas I, 49) Hace dos mil años

bien implora la gracia del Espíritu Santo que, por medio de Cristo, desciende de junto al Padre (es Él quien nos bendice;
