The Story so far...
Kenya Fashion Week is a unique event created to promote the best
established and up-and-coming talent in fashion design and build
a world-class fashion industry for Kenya. It takes the form of an
annual exhibition and trade fair where the country’s top models showcase the
creations of our leading fashion designers in a series of spectacular fashion shows
while stakeholders promote and sell their merchandise in individual shop units.
This year, the drinks brand REDD’S has extended its support and is now a
platinum sponsor and title sponsor of the event. The Colomer Group is Gold
Sponsor.

who struggle to make a living because they find it hard to attract
for the aforementioned reasons. Exhibitors are given advice and support
prior to Kenya Fashion Week and the result has been an increase in
business confidence and a tangible improvement in the overall level of
professionalism since the inaugural event in 2001.

Behind The Scenes...
Four years ago, Sue Muraya and Moira Tremaine decided to pool their talents to
promote the fashion and textile industry in Kenya. In their professional capacities
(Sue as designer and Moira as a marketing and events specialist) they had
observed considerable talent in the fledgling Kenyan fashion industry but
recognised the vast majority of its stakeholders lacked the time, resources and
expertise to promote themselves. There was also a long-held misconception that
‘imported is best’, and it was clear that - while interest in fashion was growing many potential customers had no idea where to buy clothes and accessories by
Kenyan designers. Thus it was felt a high-profile forum was needed to link Kenyan
fashion designers to the public, create pride in local talent and generate business.
"We feel that such a partnership is to the mutual
benefit of our respective organisations. In
addition to creating hairstyles and providing
make-up for all the models at Kenya Fashion
Week, we provide the expertise of our
international technician Randolph Gray to help
create cutting-edge make-up and hairstyles that
combine global trends with African flair”
Nigel McCarthy, General Manager of The Colomer Group
for Europe and East Africa

The event has tripled in size since its inception in 2001. In 2003 the international
designer Alphadi graced the occasion with a stunning range of creations designed
for Kenya Fashion Week, and in 2004 the organizers were honoured to host the
international Indian design label Satya Paul. The organisers, marketing and event
specialist Moira Tremaine and fashion designer Sue Muraya anticipate up to 6,000
visitors at REDD’S KENYA FASHION WEEK 2005. The event will take place at The
Toona Tree Complex, Museum Hill, Nairobi. This year it is both Moira and Sue’s
intention to develop the exhibition into a ‘Best of Kenya Design Fair’ that
encompasses lifestyle design in addition to fashion.

Kenya Fashion Week

Reportage KFW '04
“Kenya Fashion Week is a unique initiative to showcase young
design talent from across East Africa, thereby helping to
expand the market,” said Moira Tremaine, one of the event
directors.
In 2004, Africa’s finest models, including new Kenyan catwalk
sensation Ajuma Nasenyana, received the full star treatment
for Kenya Fashion Week from their gold sponsors Revlon
Professional - the team consisted of hair stylists from the UK
and Kenya, Revlon make up artists from Revlon South Africa
and Nail Technicians from Creative Nail Design. The team of
hair, make-up and nail artists were led by international
celebrity stylist Randolph Gray.
“Kenya Fashion Week is unique in that all of the designers are
under one roof, which makes life much easier for the creative
team. It gave me real freedom to experiment with innovative
hairstyles which have never been done before.” Randolph Gray,
international educator and technician for The Colomer Group
and Revlon Professional.
Western style was fused with
African tradition in the various
collections showcased at the
Fashion Week. African Heritage
exhibited ethnic pride with
cotton wrap national dresses in
crimson and tangerine, spiced
up with drapings of multicoloured Masai beads, bangles
and headdresses. Moo Cow - a
design house which is
flourishing, displayed western
designs - suede effect minis,
halterneck tops and tailored
jackets. Among the fifty
designers’ own collections there
was an evident mix of
traditional and contemporary.
Hotpants to sophisticated
evening gowns and sharp suits
were juxtaposed with traditional
tribal wear. “Kenya Fashion week
progresses every year, and this
year it has really moved forward. My aspiration for next
year is for the designers, make-up and hair to work more
closely to create a themed collection,” said Randolph.

“My concept was to reserve and recycle natural objects
and traditions whilst adding a contemporary twist. I
wanted to source objects from Kenya to use in the girls’
hair, but my first idea came when I was
cutting into a tuna steak at the Yoji
Yamamoto show. The cutlery was
quite trendy and I thought it would
be great to do interesting things with
the girls’ hair. When I saw the models, I utilised cutlery to
create basket weaves and shapes,” describes Randolph.
The models were like carp gliding through water as they
sashayed down the catwalk with sparkling silver fishscales
in their hair. The effect was striking under the dazzle of

The key fashion statement on the catwalk was an overall
matt-look, especially for the base. Lipgloss was another key
trend, Revlon Lipglide was used for super lustrous lips. Lipstick
and eyeshadow colours in Revlon Colorstay were applied to
pick up colours in the designers dresses.” I advised Revlon
make up artists Gertrude Molekwa and Elsa Marais, to stick to
fairly neutral shades as the make-up had to work with all the
different designers’ collections,” said Randolph.

THE HOT HAIR SHOW
Head Invigilator of the VTCT flew over from
the UK to formally assess all 25 students.
Each student had to demonstrate a cut,
blowdry, set, perm, colour and freestyle on
their model for formal assessment.
“I have been very impressed with the high
standards shown by the students - their
technical abilities are excellent,” commented
Roger White of the VTCT. Benson Mwangi was
awarded Star Student for consistent dedication
and presented with a pair of BaByliss flat irons. “I

What hair styles are on the horizon?
Long hair will always be fashionable, but there is a return to
geometric designs, which means shorter hair is back! Bobs are
back with a different feel - concave, convex, short and medium
lengths, but the good news is that bobs will have colour.
Undercutting, point cutting, highlights and dramatic colour will
effect the transition of the old bob into the latest trend. For
dramatic colour try Revlon Professional Realistic Creme Gel hair
colours, fomulated with hydrolyzed sea collagens (a conditioning
agent that penetrates the inner layer of the hair). This will make
an excellent choice for any chemically textured hair. Revlon
Professional Realistic Creme Gel hair colours are available in 20
glorious shades that create naturally bold and brilliant looks.
What hair colours should I focus on?
What products would you recommend for
my two year old daughter's dry hair and
scalp? Can I also put extensions in her
hair to make it more manageable?
Colours will be more intense and futuristic this
summer.
We will see a lot more auburns, violets,
browns, blondes, chestnuts, coppers and golds.
By mixing two together, you will get rich,
deep shades and tones. When combining two
shades of hair colour, like Creme of Nature
Colors Mahogany (5.6) and Golden Brown
(7.31) you will achieve my favourite shade
for Summer hair. Creme of Nature Creme
Gel hair colours are available in 15 vibrant
shades.

There's no problem with having extensions put

The students were sent out to different salons while on the

said: “We place the students in salons when they enrol so

majority of students have already found work.

Gel hair colours are available in 15 vibrant
shades.

Kenya Fashion Week
a full review
Reportage KFW '04
“Kenya Fashion Week is a unique initiative to showcase young
design talent from across East Africa, thereby helping to
expand the market,” said Moira Tremaine, one of the event
directors.
In 2004, Africa’s finest models, including new Kenyan catwalk
sensation Ajuma Nasenyana, received the full star treatment
for Kenya Fashion Week from their gold sponsors Revlon
Professional - the team consisted of hair stylists from the UK
and Kenya, Revlon make up artists from Revlon South Africa
and Nail Technicians from Creative Nail Design. The team of
hair, make-up and nail artists were led by international
celebrity stylist Randolph Gray.
“Kenya Fashion Week is unique in that all of the designers are
under one roof, which makes life much easier for the creative
team. It gave me real freedom to experiment with innovative
hairstyles which have never been done before.” Randolph Gray,
international educator and technician for The Colomer Group
and Revlon Professional.
Western style was fused with
African tradition in the various
collections showcased at the
Fashion Week. African Heritage
exhibited ethnic pride with
cotton wrap national dresses in
crimson and tangerine, spiced
up with drapings of multicoloured Masai beads, bangles
and headdresses. Moo Cow - a
design house which is
flourishing, displayed western
designs - suede effect minis,
halterneck tops and tailored
jackets. Among the fifty
designers’ own collections there
was an evident mix of
traditional and contemporary.
Hotpants to sophisticated
evening gowns and sharp suits
were juxtaposed with traditional
tribal wear. “Kenya Fashion week
progresses every year, and this
year it has really moved forward. My aspiration for next
year is for the designers, make-up and hair to work more
closely to create a themed collection,” said Randolph.

“My concept was to reserve and recycle natural objects
and traditions whilst adding a contemporary twist. I
wanted to source objects from Kenya to use in the girls’
hair, but my first idea came when I was
cutting into a tuna steak at the Yoji
Yamamoto show. The cutlery was
quite trendy and I thought it would
be great to do interesting things with
the girls’ hair. When I saw the models, I utilised cutlery to
create basket weaves and shapes,” describes Randolph.

Sponsor.
