It was 25 years ago today that adventure tourism as we know it today took its
first big leap of faith. AJ Hackett Bungy was not the first venture to commercialise the
adrenaline rush. Jet boating and white water rafting were already up and running,
with Dale Gardiner’s development of the rafting industry in Queenstown an obvious
inspiration. But what the AJ Hackett crew did was bring something extreme to the
masses in a safe and accessible manner. Rather than be guided or driven, you, the
customer, had to pull the trigger.
As with any new and innovative idea, there are always sceptics and bubble poppers
who tell you why it won’t work and tear anything good down. But Queenstown has
always been a bit different. From our pioneering forefathers who came here on
the search for gold and a dream of a better life, to the first people who recognized
the potential to do something different and attract tourists to this region. There
has always been a lot of support for new business and innovation. That is how
Queenstown got to this point as a thriving tourism destination. Queenstown was
the perfect place to launch Bungy and it took a lot of support from locals and the
Department of Conservation (DOC) to make it happen. DOC gave AJ Hackett an
initial 30 day licence to operate. That was a big call back then.
From there, it was the team of dedicated founders who went about creating an
industry. An industry that put Queenstown on the map as the Adventure Capital
of the World. Because from Queenstown, bungy jumping under the AJ Hackett
brand went global. Of course many others have copied their concept. That is to
be expected. A good idea deserves to be copied and you cannot have an industry
without competition.

Behind all the global success, the Queenstown brand that started it all has continued
to plug away improving, expanding and developing. Any number of disasters could
have happened, but didn’t, thanks in no small part to the dedication of every
employee who has ever pulled on the AJ Hackett staff uniform. People like Tony
Middendorf who tragically lost his life last week. On the eve of the anniversary of the
huge success story he had a big hand in developing.
Tony worked for AJ Hackett for 20 years. Such long service is a very rare thing in
Queenstown, let alone in an industry like adventure tourism, which usually attracts
the young and carefree. There would be dozens of young guys and girls a year or
two into working in Queenstown for companies like AJ Hackett weighing up their
options. Move on, or stay and make a career of it. Put down roots in Queenstown
and commit to making a good thing even better. AJ Hackett is a good thing created
by good people. From top to bottom, founding fathers to long serving lieutenants, to
enthusiastic working holidaymakers. Everyone plays their part and as AJ Hackett
continues to roll on, another bright idea is about to pop out of Queenstown onto the
world. A town full of innovators will always have more to celebrate.

Not so happy travels!
My family have just been in Queenstown. Me for
a conference and them for a bit of a break. Lovely
place. Last Wednesday we came across Happy
Travels in Shotover St. We were keen on an activity
and were told that we’d get a discount if we booked
it in for the Saturday morning for their first run. We
booked for 3. The voucher on the front indicated
that the ticket expired 12 months hence so this gave
us some comfort that if bad weather set in, we could
at least use the tickets at another time.
I read the terms and conditions attached to the ticket
and it made no mention of weather, although it did
mention in two places the 12 month expiry.

already paid $270. If the weather didn’t improve,
we would have been a further $150 worse off,
so we were left with no choice but to forfeit or

The fellow who sold us this did not explain the rain
or shine clause - nor the refund policy and change
fee, otherwise we may have decided differently.
Your two local lads (both business owners catering
to tourists) were embarrassed and urged me to
whinge.
On the morning of our activity, the weather turned
very bad. It was pouring. The visibiliity was zero. I
called them at their opening time of 8.30am, and
was told that I could tough it out in the weather,
I would rather have donated the money to charity.
Response from Happy Travels
On investigation, after speaking with my staff
member he stated that in this instance, he may not
have mentioned the 24hr cancellation policy which
is something that we always endeavor to even if it is
mentioned on the voucher. This is an error on our part
and we would have happily rescheduled the trip at our
cost had you contacted us directly. Sadly, you did not
come back to see us to sort this error and therefore we
could do nothing to help as we were not aware of the
problem at the time.
We are sorry to hear about these issues with your recent
trip to Queenstown. To begin, I’d like to point out
that on our vouchers, the 12 month cancellation clearly
states that it only applies to open dated tickets. At no
point did any of my staff indicate this was an open
dated ticket or could be rescheduled. By booking a
specific date, a ticket cannot be open dated.
In our terms and conditions, which you clearly mention
reading, it states (cancellation fee) ‘if a service provider
charges us for the cancelled travel you must also
pay us the amount we are charged on your behalf
by the service provider, it is therefore possible your
cancellation fees could be up to 100% of the cost of the
booking, regardless of whether travel has commenced
(for example cancellations within 24 hours)’. The 24
hour cancellation policy is a standard rule for most
activities in Queenstown.

Papers Everywhere
As a local resident of Queenstown I am
disgusted that in such an amazing town where
we have strict anti littering laws some local
newspapers are continually allowed to litter all
around our town. Surely this needs to come
to an end. These local papers are continually
thrown out every week and every day all around
Queenstown they cause an unsightly mess!
How is this allowed? Whether you want it or
not it gets thrown in your driveway or garden
and if you don’t notice it left there rotting. As for
all the unoccupied properties that pile up with
these papers all over the driveway until finally
someone picks them up, how is this allowed?
All over Queenstown they are left lying all over
the roads causing an unsightly mess. Surely this
is littering? Well why has no one stood up and
made this stop? Is it time we all band together
and do something about this unsightly mess in
our pristine town? I think so!

“Can I have your pee?” she asked him. His was not diluted and that’s exactly what she
needed in order to get that job. Another shitty Queenstown job. Seasonal, underpaid and
mind-numbing. Drug tests were part of the company policy, whether you were a pilot or a
cleaning lady. The sight of her smuggling a pouch of his lukewarm pee taped onto her belly
into the doctor’s office still cracks me up. But it very much illustrates the painful truth about
how Queenstown tends to treat its (hospo) staff: high expectations and minimum effort from
the employer, maximum results from the employee. And all this trouble for a mere 3 weeks
before she was going home… Sure, a fair amount of seasonal staff are just here for 3 months
of bingeing on booze, babes and blowing their brains out. But there’s also a growing group
of talented, willing workers ready to inject Queenstown with their valuable experience and
know-how. The problem is they don’t know how.
I’ve seen countless people leave because they couldn’t get a decent job, or just being fed up
with being treated like sh**. Sure, living in paradise has its price. And those who get in last
have got to work their way up, right? Nothing in life comes for free, at least that’s what my dad
taught me. Fair enough. I am very willing. But I’ve got less than 2 months left on my working
holiday visa, so I’m roaming the streets again, armed with my cv. Looking for a full-time job to
get by, to get sponsored so I can stay in this little paradise. I honestly don’t know how many
more napkins I can fold before going crazy. Don’t get me wrong, I love waitressing and I’ve
always done it with pride and passion. I can’t even remember how many customers/tourists
I’ve steered into the direction of the Canyon Swing, Zephyr, Atlas and other favorites of
mine. But my bills are high, the number on my part-time paycheck low and my very own todo list long. I’m an educated, self-conscious young woman. Proud of speaking 5 languages,
flourishing when being able to affect people with my enthusiasm. A good communicator.
Passionate about writing, travelling, food, wine and anything that feeds my soul. But lately it
feels like I’m selling my soul to the devil.
So I’d like to ask you to give it up big time for all those wonderful willing workers out there:
you’re awesome! Even though not everyone can see your awesomeness. I might have to take
my own awesomeness – or at least what’s left of it – to Oz after summer. Better weather,
better wages. Also full of Aussies. Not sure if that’s a good thing, cuz I really love my Kiwis.
It’s a plan B, and having to leave NZ fills my heart with sadness. But I didn’t quit my job, sold
my house and ditched the guy to be stuck in reverse. Gotta keep your head up!
