As a young boy, I was a
great athlete. I ran marathons
and I played soccer. In 1990
I was picked to represent my
state in the 10,000 meters
final of the nationals. I was
the best in my state and
probably the first ten in the
country. Every state was allowed three
slots officially. There were some
others who joined through a wildcard.
I was carrying the pride of my state on
my shoulders. As the best in the state
all eyes were on me. I was dwelling on
the praises of my past success. I didn’t
go to training camp which started two
months before the championship. I
never prepared for the championship,

reported to camp. I was received with

What a shame. The true
message came to me from
the coach after the
tournament, “Gerry boy, you
did not prepare.”
I look at the Lenten season as the
period, that moment, that time in our
lives as Christians, when we prepare
for the marathon. This 40 days
preparation will help us to win the 325
days marathon ahead. Do not presume
or assume anything. Even if you are a
champion or a loser, this is an
opportunity to be prepared as a good
Christian and great apostolic athlete.
This is the time we would learn how
to give so that we can receive. This is
the moment when we should learn

General Information
Our Early Childhood Education Program (ages three through First
Grade) meets Sunday, 9-10 a.m., while our Elementary Program
(2nd grade through Junior High) meets Sunday, 10:15-11:30 a.m.
If you are new to Catechetical Ministry, please print out a registration

How is Your 3-Year Old Enjoying Mass?
During the 9 a.m. Mass, we offer an Early Childhood Program. Though
our Kindergarten classes are to capacity, our Three-year and Four-year
old classes still have plenty of room. Our program provides a
developmentally appropriate faith-based experience for the youngest
members of our community.
Material Requests
We are very grateful that our
parishioners have responded most
generously to all our requests.
At this time our craft supply
storage is filled to capacity.
We will notify you
when we are able to receive
further craft donations.
Also, if you are
interested in supplying our Parish
Ministry Center and Room 2 with
large and small paper plates,
forks, spoons, cold cups and
napkins, that would be very much
appreciated.
Thank you for your continued
generosity!!!

High School
Confirmation
THIS Sunday, February 14,
at the 7:00 p.m. Mass, we will
celebrate the Rite of Enrollment
with our High School
Confirmation Candidates. We will
look to their sponsors/parents to
testify to their changed lives, they
will sign their names and we will
send them with our blessings to
proceed in their
Lenten Spiritual Journey.
Please keep our candidates in your
prayers, as they continue the
catechetical portion of their formation.
First Sunday of Lent
Adult Confirmation
If you or someone you know is
interested in completing your initiation
with the Sacrament of Confirmation,
join us on Tuesday, February 16,
7-8:30 p.m., in the Parish Ministry
Center for our Orientation Session.
Adult Baptism
Are you or is someone you know
interested in the Roman Catholic
faith? You are invited to participate
in RCIA. For information, please
contact Mary, [email protected] OR
drop by Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30 p.m., in
the Parish Ministry Center.
Do you feel
God‘s call to
share your faith
with others?
Have you thought about
becoming a catechist for our
“Children’s Liturgy of the Word”
on Sunday mornings? A catechist
is a person of faith who responds
to that call, and passes on the
traditions and teachings of our
Church to others. Our
“Children’s Liturgy of the Word”
allows our children to be in a
focused environment that opens
their hearts and minds to hear and
to respond to God’s Word in an
age appropriate manner. To find
out more about this essential
ministry, contact Mary Kane,
[email protected].

First Sunday of Lent
TREASURES FROM
OUR TRADITION
Today Lent begins. Ash
Wednesday initiates the forty days
of the Lenten fast, but since
Sundays are not tallied in the days
of fasting, today is the solemn
opening of the forty days of Lent.
The Church has work to do today,
principally the calling forward of
those chosen (the proper word is
elected) for the Easter sacraments.
Some of those who have been
catechumens may now make a
transition to a new way of life as
the “elect.” For them, this Lent
will be a time of “purification” and
“enlightenment.” For us who
accompany them, it is a time of
helping them discern God’s call
and prepare for new life.
This year, while the readings from
the third year of the Lectionary
cycle are usually read, they are set
aside on certain Sundays for the
benefit of the elect. We turn then
to the readings from Year A, and
we give those who journey to the
font of baptism three extraordinary
companions. In the Gospels for
those days, we meet the woman of
Samaria and the man born blind,
and we come to the tomb of
Lazarus three days after his death.
Many bishops celebrate the Rite of
Election on or near today,
affirming God’s choice for these
new faithful, and also offering
them the solidarity of many
companions. In 2013, over 38,000
adults entered the baptismal waters
in the United States, a remarkable
testimony to the vigor of our
tradition of receiving and nurturing
adult faith.
