Maxine Blake Golden Lion Hall of Fame
The Maxine Blake Golden Lion Hall of Fame
Award is the highest honor a chapter may
receive and is awarded each Convention to
chapters that excel in all areas of chapter
operations and programming for a minimum
period of six years. Golden Lion chapters
must demonstrate Excellence not only within
the International Organization but also on
their campuses and in their communities.
Twelve chapters were recognized for this
distinction at Alpha Delta Pi's 2009 Grand
Convention.

Convention
Four Gamma Phi collegians and ten Gamma
Phi alumnae sat on the edges of their seats for
the final night Diamond Awards Banquet at
Alpha Delta Pi's 2009 Grand Convention in
Orlando, Florida. Individual programming
awards had been distributed throughout the
exciting week of sisterhood, and we anxiously
waited to hear if we would be called for our
first ever Golden Lion Award.

Additionally, the Gamma Phi Chapter of
Alpha Delta Pi was recognized at the

Success In 2009
Once again in 2009 Alpha
Delta Pi saw a very
successful formal
recruitment. Gaining 28
members, the chapter grew
to 94 members strong!
The Panhellenic

by Alpha Delta Pi Ashley Hood serving as
Vice President of Membership for Panhellenic.
We were also represented by Sarah
Himmelreich, Kelly Masengill and Jocelyn
Michael, all serving as Pi Rho Chis helping the
potential new members through the process.
This year Panhellenic Formal Recruitment
consisted of three days - Philanthropy Night,
Theme Night and Preference. The first two
rounds are held in the Culp Center while
Preference is help in the Millennium Centre.

Developing WellRounded Members
Membership
Development
programming exists
to help chapter
members become
well balanced people
as leaders on
campus, as productive chapter members, and
in their personal lives. Membership Education
opportunities offered in the spring included
training on Interviewing Skills, Campus
Leadership, and a Stress Relief Yoga
Workshop. This fall the chapter received
training from Carrie Oliveira, the Campus
Faculty Advisor. She discussed effective
Communication within the membership
focused on New Member Retention as well as
chapter image to the campus and community.
Carrie is a professor in the Communications
Department.
This Fall will mark 55 Years for Alpha Delta Pi
on campus. As the first sorority on campus,
Gamma Phi wants to celebrate being the First
& Finest at ETSU! We will commemorate our
55th anniversary and our Golden Lion
achievement with a series of special events.
On the weekend of October 23 and 24, 2009,
we will have an open house of the new
chapter hall in Lucille Clement Dormitory, an
initiation of our Fall 2009 Alpha class, and a
concluding celebration. In addition, the East
Tennessee Alumnae Association will be
offering the Jewel Degree to those alumnae
who have not yet received it.
The theme of our 55th anniversary celebration
is “Hear Her Roar.” The celebration will be
held on Saturday the 24th at The Charles in
downtown Johnson City from 7:00 PM to 10:00
PM. The event cost is $30 per person. Your
guests & family are welcome to join us! Check
the website for more information or call

Bringing Panhellenic
Sisterhood Into Focus
Amber Preston, Panhellenic Delgate
With two members serving on the Executive
Board, Alpha Delta Pi’s Panhellenic
involvement is extremely important. This
semester Alpha Delta Pi has participated in
several Panhellenic events, such as Risky
Business, a Panhellenic-wide honor guard
training, small-group discussion with Tim
Wise, a prominent speaker on diversitytraining who visited the campus, and, of
course, campus wide Recruitment, sponsored
by Panhellenic. Alpha Delta Pi is pleased to
report the addition of twenty-eight new
alphas as a direct result of this year’s
recruitment efforts.
Although Alpha Delta Pi always strives to
better Panhellenic relations, this semester’s
new “sorority dorm life” aspect makes it a
whole new ball game. Living on the hall gives
members full access to open communication
within the different sororities. At the
beginning of this semester, several Deltas
went out for dessert in an attempt to discuss
Panhellenic plans, and were able to bring back
dessert for other chapters that were unable to
attend. At present, Alpha Delta Pi is leading a
Panhellenic Bible study where, so far, three
out of the four sororities are represented each
Monday night at nine o’clock. Living on the
Sorority floor of a campus dormitory has been
a great way to bring Panhellenic sisterhood
into focus.
As mentioned, Alpha Delta Pi is privileged to
have two of her members serving on the
Panhellenic Executive Board. This week’s
meeting ushered in the applications for next
year’s new officers. We are hoping to have
continued involvement within Panhellenic
Exec (one of our members may even be
running for Panhellenic President), and within
Panhellenic recruitment by encouraging Alpha
Delta Pi members to consider positions as next
year’s recruitment counselors.

Stay Connected With
Gamma Phi Chapter
Gamma Phi debuted a new website design
this year. The web address remains the same,
www.alphadeltapietsu.org. Currently featured
on the home page are some of the graduating
seniors. Included on the site is chapter
information, a brag book of successes,
examples of members’ activities on campus,
how to become an ADPi, philanthropic
endeavors we support, social activities we’ve
sponsored in the past as well as a news &
events section that will be updated regularly.
Our website is also where you will find the
electronic version of Hear Her Roar.
Recognizing the value, the chapter
created a Page on Facebook. Search
for Alpha Delta Pi - East Tennessee
State University and become a fan
for additional news and communication with
current and past members. Another great way
to stay connected with Gamma Phi!
Think Pink
Gamma Phi supports Breast Cancer
Awareness Month in October. The chapter sets
up booths on campus and wears Think Pink
shirts for awareness through out the month.
The chapter also volunteers for the Susan G.
Komen Race for the Cure. This year the event
will be held on Sunday, October 25th in
Kingsport, TN. Join Us!

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Brittany Holbert
Dear Parents, Alumnae, and Sisters,
recognized as Dorothy
It is so great to be releasing our second edition
Shaw Honoree
of Hear Her Roar and at the perfect time to
reiterate the accomplishment of 55 years at
East Tennessee State University and to
celebrate the Maxine Blake Golden Lion
Award. This summer was an extremely
exciting time for Gamma Phi and we look
forward to giving you a glimpse of that
excitement through our newsletter.
The beginning of August marked the start of
school and move-in day to our new home in
Lucille Clement. Walking into the 1970-style
dorm, most of us felt a small tug, wondering
what we were doing living here for the next 9
months. But as we started to unpack and the
rooms started to look like home, we realized
how much fun we were going to have this
semester. Living on the hall has been the best
thing for our sisterhood as a chapter. As
President, having a relationship with that
chapter outside of business meetings has
really helped me to understand and learn how
to communicate with them better.
The Dorothy Shaw Leadership Award is the
highest honor given to a collegiate member of
Alpha Delta Pi. The award is named for Dorothy
Pierpont Shaw, Rho Chapter, Boston University.
She served from 1920-1931 as Alumnae Secretary,
Registrar, Historian, Province President, and
Convention Manager. She also published the first
national membership directory for Alpha Delta Pi.
At the 2009 Grand Convention, Brittany
Holbert was named as a recipient of the
Dorothy Shaw Leadership Award. Only 25
women across the US and Canada received
this honor. While in the chapter Brittany
served as the Executive Vice President and
President. Brittany will be continuing her
involvement with Alpha Delta Pi by traveling
the United States and Canada as a Leadership
Consultant to our chapters.

spring semester filled with over $20,000
dollars raised for Ronald McDonald House,
more money raised by Greeks than ever before
for Relay for Life, and a win in All Sing, we
are looking forward to a great fall semester.

Alumnae support Gamma Phi in numerous
ways. Aside from the active alumnae advisors,
the alumnae association co-hosts the annual
Ronald McDonald House Benefit & Auction,
hosts meals during formal recruitment, hosts a
meal and presents new members with gifts at
initiation, hosts Pies with the Pis at Chapter
Retreat, conducts Jewel Degree for graduating
seniors, and so much more. Join today!
Mother’s Club News
The Gamma Phi Mother’s Club has had a
busy year already. We enjoyed serving
breakfast to our girls two mornings at the
Summer House Party. We took pizza and
drinks and other snacks to the chapter during
Recruitment week, and then we served many
healthy snacks to them during their recent
Retreat.
We were treated by the girls to a wonderful
Parent’s Picnic at Winged Deer Park last
Sunday. What a wonderful time for all of us.
6!
P
I
We are sorry if you missed it. Ashley Umbel’s
mom, Kelly Fischer (with the help of some of
the girls) prepared a
wonderful lunch
consisting of
assorted homemade
sandwiches, various
salads, and many
homemade desserts.
The Mother/Father ceremonies were really
special and brought tears to our eyes. Our
daughters are so special!
We registered existing and new moms to the
Gamma Phi Mother’s Club at the picnic. We
added about 16 moms to our club for this year.
We had already added 7 moms at our first
meeting. The annual fee for the club is $25.
This helps us pay for food we deliver to the
girls for different meetings, purchase senior
gifts for each girl graduating, and purchase a
breakfast snack to deliver to each girl during
exams. If you have not paid your annual dues
and wish to do so, please mail a check written
to Gamma Phi Mother’s Club to Janie
Childress at 1013 Nottingham Court,
Kingsport, TN 37660. If you live out of town
and cannot join our meetings, you are
welcome to make a monetary donation at any
time to help us out. If you provide your email address, we will keep you posted on
what we are doing and what needs we may
have.
We will be looking to nominate new officers in
December this year as the President; Sandy
Satterfield’s daughter will be graduating. If
you are interested in helping out, we will be
electing a President/Co-Presidents and maybe
other positions that need to be filled. Our next
meeting will be held on Tuesday, November
10, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. at Bob Evans Restaurant
at the Boones Creek Exit off of I-26. Hope to
see some new faces there.
In addition to serving our
girls and making their life a
little easier, we have fun
getting to know one another
and fellowshipping with
each other. We have many
events to look forward to
before semester end. We
will be serving Food for
Finals during Finals week,
and we will have a Christmas Party for the
chapter December 13 (destination to be
announced). We will also have Senior SendOff sometime in December.
Don’t miss out on the fun and the opportunity
to be involved with the lovely ADPi girls and
their moms! Feel free to contact Sandy
Satterfield, President Gamma Phi Mother’s
Club, at [email protected] or call (423)

Wow that alumnae newsletter is AWESOME!!!! !I
can't believe how much has changed...and definitely
looks like for the better! !Thanks for all your hard
work! :)
Carrie Bridwell Jacobs 2000-2004
I was SO impressed by the newsletter. The design,
stories... everything! I especially loved how the stories
covered all the points of our pin to show how the
chapter and its members are so well-rounded. I feel
like I am completely in the loop on the Gamma Phi
happenings now. I even sent it on to my mother to
read so she could hear how Gamma Phi is
continuously improving. I'm already anticipating the
next newsletter.

Executive Board
I Believe in Alpha Delta Pi. I believe that the four undergraduate years in Alpha Delta Pi are
only the beginning of a lifelong, rewarding experience.
I'm currently living in Boca Raton, Florida and will be there this semester starting our New Colony at
FAU! - Brittany Holbert 2005-2009
I Believe in Alpha Delta Pi. I believe that a picture says a thousand words and whenever I
am having a lonely day or feeling down I look through my pictures from all the ADPi
functions and the nostalgia makes me so happy to have had so many friends and so many
memories throughout my undergraduate years.
I am now living in Knoxville and working as a Child Domestic Violence Advocate at a battered
women’s shelter. - Lindsey Wright 2005-2009
I Believe in Alpha Delta Pi. I believe that our sorority is more than a sisterhood, it is a way of
life. As a recent graduate entering the 'young professional' world, the wealth of personal and
professional knowledge I gained in my time active shaped the person that I am today. The
contagious drive to succeed that I was surrounded by led me to take on leadership positions
that I knew would challenge me and continue the inspiration from other girls to do well for
themselves and set goals for their futures. Today I miss the positive energy that surrounded
me as an Alpha Delta Pi, although without the random calls, frat parties, dinners, and formals
I have found that this affirmative attitude extends to my everyday life. I believe that Alpha
Delta Pi is a vital part of who I am.

I Believe in Alpha Delta Pi. I believe that it is because of Alpha Delta Pi that I found the
confidence and ambition to grow more strongly in a direction of success. I cannot imagine
myself or my life if ADPi would not had been a part of it.

About Hear Her Roar
About Alpha Delta Pi
About Our Chapter
Hear Her Roar is a civic publication of the Gamma
Phi Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Its purpose
is to inform Alpha Delta Pi alumnae, parents, and
the ETSU Community of the important
developments and accomplishments of active and
alumnae members of the chapter. An online version
can be found in the News & Events section on
www.alphadeltapietsu.org.
The story begins in 1851 at Wesleyan Female
College in Macon, Georgia, where six incredible
women changed the world. Led by Eugenia Tucker
Fitzgerald, our founders formed The Adelphean
Society for “the mental, moral, social, and domestic
improvement of its members.” The Adelphean
Society, later renamed Alpha Delta Pi, was the first
secret society for college women.
The Gamma Phi Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority
was established at East Tennessee State University
on November 13, 1954. As the first sorority at East
Tennessee State, Alpha Delta Pi has enjoyed a
reputation as one of the premier campus
organizations for women for 55 years and currently
boasts a membership of over 1100 sisters.
Contributors to this issue include: Megan Kanipe, Amber Preston, Sabrina Satterfield.
