CMH Merges Two
Clinics in Marysville
Community
Memorial
Healthcare (CMH) will merge
two of its medical clinics in
Marysville,
Community
Physicians Clinic (CPC) and
Marysville Clinic, into one
clinic, effective Tuesday, June
2, 2015. The clinic will be
known
as
‘Community
Physicians Clinic.’
Merging the clinics has been
a goal of the CMH medical
staff and hospital leadership for
some time. Physician Shane
Thoreson, and nurse practitioner Linda Bott, both at
Marysville Clinic, and staff,
will move into Community
Physicians Clinic to join physicians Randy Brown, Ben
Bruna, John Haefele, and John
Ryan, nurse practitioners Anne
Bruna and Michele Voelker,
and office staff. Jean Stillwell,
will serve as clinic manager.
“The clinic merger was done
to better position the hospital in
a changing health care industry
by seeking efficiencies and
improved scheduling,” said
Curtis Hawkinson, hospital
administrator. He added, “This
merger has addressed organizational challenges and will provide opportunities to maximize
resources and create a stronger
and more seamless system of
care.”
General surgeon Fernando
Ugarte, whose office was located in CPC, has moved into the
Marysville Clinic building. Dr.
Ken Duensing and nurse practitioner Cheri Shanks will
remain at the Blue Rapids
Medical Clinic. Community
Physicians Clinic in Wymore,
NE will also remain open.
Clinic remodeling is nearing
completion and on schedule for
the transition to take place on
June 2nd. CMH plans to have
an open house for the public
sometime later this year.

and Ray Shultz, DVM,
Randolph. Gilkerson is a
retired USD 364 school nurse;
Ladner is employed at Landoll
Corporation in sales management; and Dr. Shultz, is a veterinarian and co-owner of
Valley Vet Supply.
Trent Moser, Marysville,
was elected Chair, succeeding
Dan Caffrey, Marysville. Bryce
Porter was elected Vice-Chair.

Corporate
members
approved a new Bylaw change
in April to increase the number
of board terms a Director can
serve from two to three. The
result is that a Director can
serve a total of nine years
instead of six years. The
change becomes effective
beginning in 2016. Increasing
the number of terms a Director
may serve will enable CMH to
take advantage of a Director’s
knowledge and experience
gained for a longer period of
time. In a related matter, the
Board approved a policy that
requires each Director to obtain
24 hours of continuing education each year to learn and
understand the healthcare
organization and industry.
CMH extends a warm welcome to our 2015-2016 hospital board members.
Shelby Vermetten, Valley Heights won 2 events in the Regional Track Meet last week. Shelby took first in the Shot Put and
the Discus Throw. She also took 4th in the Javelin.
Back To The Kansas State Track Meet
Last year Valley Heights
Girls took three to the State
Track Meet in Wichita and
walked off with 1st Place. They
took two boys and finished 6th
in the State.
Seven Girls will return
Saturday to defend their championship. They took first at
Regionals with 84 points. The
seven Girls and how they
placed in the Regionals:
Kayla Smith: 1st in triple
jump; 2nd with the 4x100 relay
team; and 3rd in both the 100
meter dash and the long jump.
Shelby Vermetten: 1st in
both the shot put and the discus
throw.
Sidney Blackburn: 2nd in the
shot put and 3rd in the discus
throw; 4th in the javelin throw.
Styler Sanders: 2nd in the
high jump and 2nd with the
4x100 relay team.
Nicole Weyer: 4th in the
long jump and 2nd with the
4x100 relay team.
Taylor Doner will be joining
Smith, Saunders and Weyer in
the 4x100.
Last year Valley Heights
Boys took two and this year
they will take three. They took
second at the Regionals with 68
points.
Elijah Smith: 1st in the 110
meter hurdles; 1st in the long
jump; 1st in the triple jump and
1st in the 300 meter hurdles.

More sites in Kansas to
offer free summer meals
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _
Kansas will offer free meals to
children this summer at 100
more sites than last year.
This week, 44 school cafeterias and other Wichita sites will
begin offering free meals as
part of the annual summer food
service program.
The Wichita Eagle reports
(http://bit.ly/1PIbjcs ) that the
meals are for children who
count on free breakfasts and
lunches during the school year.
Peggy McAdoo, assistant
director of child nutrition and
wellness for the Kansas
Department of Education, says
there may be more than 450
sites statewide this year, nearly
100 more locations than last
summer. The Kansas Food
Bank also will supply meals to
19 sites in rural communities.
The program is open to children younger than 18 and doesn't require any paperwork.
Valley Heights is one of the
450 school offering the program.

Egg prices surge to record on shortage caused by bird flu
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _
Egg prices reached record levels on Friday after a bird flu
outbreak decimated the flock,
leading to the death of more
than 20 million egg-laying hens
over the last month in the top
producing state of Iowa.
The virus spread appears to
have slowed but not stopped.
Federal officials are planning
an aggressive educational campaign to improve biosecurity
around infected barns after
tests have shown the disease is
spreading from farm to farm.
Officials studying the worst
bird flu outbreak in the U.S. say
they're learning about the virus
that has led to 40 million dead
birds _ mostly turkeys and egglaying chickens _ either from
the disease or euthanized to
prevent its spread. Following
are some answers to questions
about the current status of the
outbreak.
Yes, in the short term at
least. With egg supplies dwindling, the price of eggs used in
food products and shell eggs
we eat for breakfast will climb
higher. Carton egg prices
reached a record Friday of
$2.32 a dozen for Midwest
large eggs, said Rick Brown, a
senior vice president for Urner
Barry, a commodity market
analysis firm. That's a 95 percent increase in a month. The
previous record was $2.27 set
last Dec 4. Breaker eggs, those
used to make ice cream, mayonnaise and other processed
foods also set a record Friday.
They reached the record $2.13
a dozen, up 238 percent from
63 cents they were selling for
on April 22 when the virus hit
Iowa's egg-laying hen population.

Fanchon F. Bergsten, age 98,
of Blue Rapids, passed away at
Blue Valley Senior Living in
Blue Rapids on Friday, May 22,
2015.
Fanchon was born April 16,
1917, at Cottage Hill, to
Edward F. and Anna F.
(Kneemeyer) Roepke. She
attended Cottage Hill Grade
School and Waterville High
School. On May 2, 1937, she
married Ralph L. Bergsten, at
the church parsonage.
She was a lifelong member
of the Swede Creek United
Methodist Church where she
served in many capacities
including being a Sunday
School Teacher and being a
member of the United
Methodist Women. She was a
member of the EHU and was a
Master Homemaker for 1970.
Fanchon was preceded in
death by an infant daughter
Muriel and by five brothers and
sisters; Edna Roepke, Amanda
Blaske,
Alta
Rickson,
Lawrence Roepke and Ethel
Weide.
Survivors include her two
children; Char Donelson of
Colorado Springs and Ed
Bergsten and wife Mickey of
Blue Rapids, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and a brother Everett

92, Hanover, died Wednesday,
May 20, 2015, at the Hanover
Hospital.
Visitation was Friday, May
22, from Noon until 8:00 p.m.
at the Hanover Mortuary.
Mass of Christian Burial was
held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday,
May 23, at St. John’s Catholic
Church in Hanover. Father
David Metz officiated. Janet
Fritschi will play the organ
while the church choir sings
“Amazing Grace”, “How Great
Thou Art”, “Ave Maria”, and
“Here I Am Lord”.
The pallbearers werel be Ted
Bruna, Vince Bruna, Alan
Bruna, Don Schuessler, Jim
Sandman and Shorty Goeckel.
Burial will be in St. John’s
Catholic Cemetery in Hanover.
Loretta was born August 25,
1922, in rural Washington
County to Joseph and
Josephine (Goeckel) Koehler.
On June 24, 1941, she was unit-
ed in marriage to Francis
Schroeder at St. John’s
Catholic Church in Hanover.
They were blessed with two
children, Connie and Larry.
Loretta and Francis owned
and operated Schroeder HyKlas Grocery and Loretta had a
ceramic business in Hanover.
She was a member of St.
John’s Catholic Church, St.
John’s Auxiliary and the
American Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Francis in
1986; parents; and brother,
Edward Koehler.
Survivors include daughter,
Connie (Edwin) Ryser, Kansas
City, MO; son, Larry (Kay)
Schroeder, Platte City, MO;
four grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren.
A memorial fund is established and will be designated
family.

Phyllis J. Runnebaum, age
69, of Marysville, passed away
on Wednesday, May 20, 2015,
at her home in Marysville.
Phyllis was born December
30, 1945, at Waterville, to Glen
F. and Erna M. (Samsel)
Sperry. She was a graduate of
Blue Rapids High School in
1963. Phyllis spent many years
being a mom. For many years
she enjoyed working as a caretaker for the residents of Twin
Valley
Developmental
Services.
Phyllis was a member of St.
Mark’s Lutheran Church in
Waterville.
She was preceded in death
by her sister Glenda Leonard
and her parents.
Survivors include her two
sons, Jeff Warders of Navarre
and Kevin Warders of
Marysville, a brother Roland
Sperry and wife Nona of Bella
Vista, Arkansas, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Helen Joan (Lynch) Vering,
88, of Marysville passed to our
Father in Heaven on May 22,
2015, after a lengthy illness.
Helen was preceded in death
by her husband of 58 years,
Marcel (Mark) Vering in 2005.
She was born July 23, 1926, in
Pawnee City, NE, to Henry and
Gertrude Lynch. She was the
3rd of 5 children. Shortly after,
the family moved to Marysville
where Helen later graduated
from Marysville High School
in 1944.
After working for the Martin
Bomber Plant in Omaha during
the war, Helen returned to
Marysville and married her
high school sweetheart, Mark,
on June 3, 1946. Helen and
Mark farmed north of Blue
Rapids and later west of
Marysville, where they raised
hogs, registered angus cattle
and crops. Helen’s passion in
life was her family of 5 chil-
dren, 14 grandchildren and 17
great grandchildren. She was a
4-H cooking leader for 16 years
and loved attending her kid’s
activities. She was also a member of St. Gregory’s Church, St.
Gregory’s Quilting and Altar
Society, American Legion
Auxillary, Past Commander’s
Wives, the DAR and past member of the Moose Club and
Country Club. She was also an
RSVP senior volunteer, a member of the Marshall County
Historical Society, several card
groups and a member of the
Schroyer Club since 1948.
After Mark retired, he and
Helen enjoyed playing cards,
dancing and visiting with family. Besides Mark, Helen is preceded in death by her brother
Bobby Lynch and sister
Kathryn Lynch and is survived
by her brothers Jack Lynch and
Jim Lynch, wife Joan, and sister-in-law, Donna Vering.
Helen is also survived by her
daughter Kathy (Bob) Scott of
Denver and grandchildren Niki
(David) Maclean, Amy (Bryan)
Cook and Taylor Scott; son
Greg (Tami) Vering of
Marysville and grandchildren
Brandon (Tracy) Vering, Alicia
(Nick) Pecenka and Shelley

Helen will lie in state from
10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Kinsley
Mortuary on Tuesday and one
hour before the service. Burial
will be at St. Gregory’s cemetery immediately following the
service with lunch to be served
at St. Gregory’s hall after burial.

Valley Heights Boys to a Second Place finish at the Regionals.
Adrian Pishny took 2nd in the 3200 meter run and 3rd place in the 1600 meter run. Adren will be going to State in
both events this Friday.
Valley Heights Skyler Sanders took 2nd place at the Regional Track Meet last Friday. She also
ran on the 4x100 meter relay team that took second. She is going to State in both events.

USD 498 Valley Heights and USD 380 Vermillion have a
School Social Worker position open for the 2015-2016
school year. This will be a shared position between the two
districts. Minimum qualification is a Bachelors Degree in
