DESIGNING YOUR FENCE
Whether building a new fence or updating an existing fence, ask yourself a few simple questions before you rush
out and buy the same materials you always have. Spending time designing your fence may save you time and
money when building and maintaining your next fence – the result will most likely be a better performing fence.
MAP YOUR PROPERTY.
Sketch out on paper a map of your property or
print an aerial image of your property from free
online sources such as Google ® maps.
MARK BOUNDARY FENCES.
Mark out the boundary fence lines, corners, angles and gates on your property map, avoiding natural
obstacles like creek beds where possible. If your map is to scale, this will help with calculating the length
of your fence lines.
MARK INTERNAL FENCES.
Designate certain areas (grazing, laneways, yards or cropping) of your property. This will help you
determine the level of pressure your fences will face and what products will help you address that.
Generally, high pressures require more posts and wire and low pressures require less posts and wire.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL FORCES.
Think about what you are trying to keep off your property. A fence can be breached in one of three ways –
Over it, Under it or Through it. If feral animals are a threat, note the characteristics of those animals – do
they jump, burrow or charge fences. Your answers will help you choose the right products for your needs.
Careful consideration should be given to designing a strong boundary fence using the best quality materials
you can afford.
NATURAL FORCES: FIRE AND FLOOD.
If fire is a common occurrence, consider using low-medium tensile Waratah wire which helps minimise the chance
of the wire snapping or losing tension under the heat of the fire. If flood is a common occurrence, consider using
JIO MaxY posts to strengthen the fence line and Longlife wire for the best protection from corrosion.
TERRAIN.
If your property is rocky and hard, consider using shorter steel posts that you
don’t need to drive in too far and are easier to install. For loamy and soft soils,
consider using longer steel posts that you can drive further into the ground to
establish better ground holding. Also consider the slope – for flat ground, post
spacings may be increased and most wire products are suitable, but for sloping
ground, post spacings may need to be closer to assist with wire attachment.
Now that you have considered the points above, read through this catalogue to identify the products that will best
suit your needs and write these at the bottom of your map.

A PROVEN WAY TO BUILD YOUR FENCE WITH STEP-BY-STEP SIMPLICITY
PLAN YOUR LINE.
ERECT STRAINER ASSEMBLIES.
After designing your fence on paper, it’s time to build it. First,
determine where exactly your fence needs to go then prepare a
line and clear if necessary. Consider pressure points such as stock
camps, water ways along with site contours, erosion, and soil type.
Your strainer assemblies (otherwise known as “end assemblies”)
form the foundation of a good fence. Determine the number required
and their location, as well as the depth and anchoring, as this is an
important part of making your fence strong and long lasting.
This is a time to consider if and where any gates are to be installed.
LAY OUT YOUR POSTS.
DRIVE IN YOUR POSTS.
Strain a sight wire close to the ground and lay your posts at a predetermined spacing by ‘stepping out’ along the fence line. A straight
fence line minimises pressure points. Including JIO™ MaxY ® posts
in your fence line will ensure a stronger fence due to their increased
strength and better ground holding ability, particularly in softer soils.
Drive in JIO Star® and JIO MaxY posts with a Star ® 80NB
post driver or Thumpa® pneumatic post driver – check depth
and position as per your fence line.
STRAIN THE WIRE.
ATTACH THE WIRE.
Attach the wire to be used in the fence to one strainer assembly
then using Wizard® wire strainers (and Wedgelock® clamp for
pre-fabricated wire), strain the wire at the other strainer assembly.
Check tension with a Tenser Senser®. Over tension slightly as you’ll
lose some tension when tying off. Tie off, remove the wire strainers
and/or Wedgelock clamp.
Fixing the wire is quick, easy and labour saving when you use
JIO Longlife® post clips (these are up to 20% faster than other
methods). Star post clips or Longlife cut length tie wire can
also be used. By using quality products and the right accessories
from Waratah, it’s easy to finish with a professional job even
if you’ve never built a fence before.

A good quality fence is an investment. Designing your fence correctly before you start and using the right materials
will help to maximise the value of your investment over the life of the fence. However, even the very best fences will
require some maintenance to ensure ongoing peak performance. There are factors outside of your control that will
require attention over time. Environmental conditions like floods, fallen branches and stock related wear and tear are
all issues that can impact a fence’s performance.
Regular maintenance will extend the working life of your new fence line, saving you time and money in the long run.
TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR FENCE
CHECK REGULARLY.
Walk or drive along your fence lines regularly to check for fence line failure points. Most maintenance can be
done on the spot using Waratah tools and accessories.
CLEAR ALONG FENCE LINES.
Remove any debris or fallen tree branches on or around your fence. The debris that is left behind from
storms and floods can become entangled on your fence. Left unattended over time, wet waste can affect
the coating of your wire and posts, causing rust or corrosion, or provide a way over the fence for feral
animals. Remove or trim grass that grows up around posts and wire along your fence. It promotes good
air circulation to keep the steel surfaces dry, slowing the effects of corrosion. It also reduces the combustible
material around the post in the event of a grass fire, reducing the chance of extreme heat damage.
REPAIR EROSION POINTS.
After heavy rain, check that soil erosion under your fence does not compromise your boundary and let stock
out or feral animals in.
CHECK POSTS AND WIRE TENSION.
Straighten or replace broken posts with the same or stronger posts like the JIO™ MaxY ®. Over time, things
like stock pressure, fallen tree branches and general wear and tear can also cause your wire tension to
relax. Waratah recommend using a Tensor Sensor® to check wire tension. Correct it quickly and easily using
our Wizard® wires trainer and Gripple® wire joiners.

IS YOUR CURRENT FENCE DESIGN THE RIGHT ONE FOR THE JOB?
When designing your fence, consider what animals you are trying to keep in or out. Whether feral animals
are the issue, such as wild pigs or dogs, kangaroos or pademelons, or containing stock to certain areas of a
property, the fence is going to be tested by these animals in one of three ways: by either trying to get Over it,
Under it or right Through it.
OVER – any animals that try to jump over fences, for example; kangaroos
UNDER – any animals that try to burrow under fences, for example; dogs
THROUGH – any animals that try to push through fences, for example; pigs
Waratah’s extensive range of products is designed to work seamlessly together, saving you both time and money.
Waratah has provided a selection of fence designs that can assist with deciding what could be the most
effective fence design to suit your application.

the fence designs that address the O.U.T principles on the following pages
you need a fence design that addresses just one principle (i.e. Over) or a combination (i.e. Over, Under)?
7
With the largest rural fencing team in Australia, we have gained a lot of fencing knowledge from farmers over the last
130 years. The following pages show some commonly used fence designs for the ‘O.U.T’ concept. They are a guide
only and can be adapted to suit your particular needs.
Fence height will help provide
better protection from animals
that jump, such as kangaroos.
This fence design uses 210cm
posts and 150cm high
Stocksafe-T ® wire. If you need
a higher fence, consider using
240cm posts and maybe a line
or two of 1.8mm high tensile
barb wire on top.
Traditional fence designs usually
have a gap between the bottom
wire and the ground, which can
allow easy access for smaller
or burrowing animals, such as
wild dogs or wombats. This
fence design uses a combination
of 180 and 165cm posts as
well as the popular 90cm high
Stocklock® or Stocktite® wire.
Waratah Netting has been
attached to the bottom of the
fence and either laid on, or dug
into the ground – commonly
called a lap fence.
Pre-fabricated fencing with
tighter picket spacings can
deter those animals that try to
‘push through’ a fence, such
as pigs. This fence design uses
180 and 165cm posts as well
as a 90cm high Stocklock or
Stocktite wire with tight 15cm
picket spacings. A 1.8mm barb
wire on the top for impact
strength and 2.5mm Iowa
barb on the bottom to deter
pushing under the fence and to
resist fire damage finishes this
common fence design.

HINTS & TIPS: Short strains make the
impact from livestock, boom sprays, slashers
and other equipment quicker and easier to
repair. Longer strains might seem like a good
idea, but if any damage occurs, the whole
fence will need to be re-done.
EZYPIPE®
STRAINER POST
ADJUSTA-STAY ®
Strainer assemblies are critical in any fence line.
They carry the strain of the fence wire, impact from
animals and bear the weight of accessories such as
gates. If a strainer assembly fails, so will the entire
fence. Good strainer assemblies will assist with
easier fence maintenance and also provide flexibility
in stock rotation.
Two key components make a good strainer assembly –
the strainer post and the stay. Waratah have a choice
of two strainer posts – the angled Ezyslot ® or the
round Ezypipe with anchoring options if required and
a multi-purpose stay – the Adjusta-stay.
Waratah strainer assemblies have been designed to
simplify installation, eliminate the need for machinery
and extend the life of Longlife® Blue colour® fence wire.

Posts are key to a fence’s strength and longevity.
Waratah have advanced current fence post technology
and developed the new JIO post range to meet the demand
for innovation in the rural industry. Modern fencing continues
to evolve and each new fence design requires a stronger,
more ductile fence post with more attachment points.
Steel posts offer a number of advantages over both
timber and concrete alternatives. When looking at steel
post options it’s important to know that Waratah posts
have superior quality in several key areas. Some fence
posts can twist, bend or break when being driven into the
ground, or are weaker, which requires them to be spaced
closer together, which all adds significant cost and time
when installing and maintaining your fence.

DO IT ONCE, DO IT RIGHT, DO IT LONGLIFE®
Good quality fence wire, whether plain, barbed, prefabricated or wire netting is key to the life of a fence.
Waratah’s Longlife Blue colour® wire has been proven to last at least 9 times longer than standard galvanized
wire and at least 1.5 times longer than heavy galvanized wire.
THE BEST WIRE CORE
Waratah steel wire core comes from the only Australian wire manufacturer that controls every step of the
process. The high quality wire core of Longlife Blue is protected with the latest coating technology, applied
with a proprietary application process exclusive to Waratah.
THE BEST COATING TECHNOLOGY
Waratah wire is run through a bath of high purity Australian zinc before the wire enters a second bath of zinc
aluminium, which reacts with the first zinc coating to form a ternary layer that bonds with the steel and the
outer zinc aluminium layer – we call this coating technology Zalcote ®. Our distinctive blue polymer Permaseal®
layer is then added to give even more protection in Australia’s harsh climate.
THICKER IS NOT NECESSARILY BETTER
Don’t be fooled by claims that thick heavy galvanizing provides better protection. A 2.5mm wire with
heavy galvanizing is the same 2.5mm diameter as Longlife Blue colour wire, which means the thicker heavy
galvanized wire must be thinner to start with, making the wire potentially weaker.
The thick zinc only coating of heavy galvanized wire is also more likely to crack and fracture when bent, unlike
Longlife Blue which is more ductile and resists cracking to ensure the protective coating stays in place.
PICTURES SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS
Don’t just take our word for it.
The pictures here show the progressive
results of placing Longlife Blue colour
wire, standard galvanised wire and
heavy galvanised wire in a salt bath
for over 1000 hours. You’ll soon realise
you can’t afford not to use Waratah
Longlife Blue colour wire.

Waratah offers two types of barbed wire - High tensile and Iowa. High tensile barbed wire is recommended
for use in conjunction with other high tensile wires where wider post spacings are used. Iowa barbed wire is
commonly used in conjunction with netting fences and in areas considered to be at risk from grass fires.
Whilst not a requirement of Australian standards, Waratah barbed wire is continuous and contains no joins.
This provides consistent strength along the entire length of the reel and reduces the risk of injury when straining.
LONGLIFE® HIGH TENSILE BARBED WIRE
APPLICATIONS AND FEATURES
Waratah Longlife Blue colour® high tensile barbed wire is made from high tensile wire in a reverse twist pattern.
P 1.80mm
provides 25% greater strength than 1.57 barb and is favoured for use on boundary fences
P Reverse twist pattern provides maximum strength and safety
P Consistent and closer barb spacing means more barbs for maximum stock pressure and security
P 1.57mm
high tensile barbed wire is available, and recommended for lower pressure situations

P What
sort of fence are you building?
Boundary? Internal? Temporary? Permanent?
P What
are your conditions? Rocky? Sloping?
Constantly wet? Unstable? Coastal location?
P What
is the length of the fence you are
building? Is it straight or are there corners
that will require strainer end assemblies?
If so how many?
Available at:
P What
are you trying to keep out or keep in?
P What
posts are you using? Why are you using them?
P What
wire are you using? Is it the right wire for the job/conditions?
P Do
you have the right equipment to install your fence?
P Do
you need a post driver? Wire strainers? Wire spinner? Tie wire?
Do you want to save time tying knots? Do you have fencing pliers?
P Is
