U-MARQ Universal Engraving Chapter 1 Introduction Universal Engraving Introduction Thank you for choosing the U-MARQ Universal Engraving Software, with your new machine. The accompanying program has been designed to work under Windows XP and Vista, with total ease of use in mind. Using This Reference Manual This Reference Manual can be used in conjunction with the Quick Start Manual supplied with your machine. It is laid out in Chapters that as far as possible mimic the U-MARQ Universal Engraving Software's Main Menu Bar, i.e. starting with the Files Menu and progressing through to the Help Menu, with detailed explanations on each. How to’s In each Chapter you will find How to topics, these are more detailed descriptions of specific functions and usually involve some interactivity on your part, to complete a task. How to’s are probably the quickest way to become proficient using a specific function, but also teach you to incorporate things like < Hot Keys > which also interact with other functions. Note : A full list of the How to’s with locations are in the Index. Thanks and Good Luck !!! From the U-MARQ Development Team. Also the Object will machine from inside to out, which is essential when using a nose cone. Even simple Objects i.e. A rectangle will benefit from being a Face. When Universal Engraving creates any closed path, even text it is automatically created as a Face. When Profile Milling or Routing, by combining Objects into Faces you will ensure that the insides are machined before the outsides. Note : Pre-cleared and single stroke engraving text is not created as a Face but is a grouped Objects, this is because it is likely to contain open paths. Tips on Scanning When scanning into Universal Engraving always make sure you set you scanner to Grayscale regardless of what kind of Artwork you have, this will ensure the best quality of reproduction after Vectorization. Your Scanner should be set to the highest Optical Resolution to obtain the best results, Do Not Use the Scanners built in Interpolation. The definition of Fine, Medium and Course Vectorising is as follows. Fine : This setting is normally used when the original artwork is of Bromide quality or this taken from high quality black and white or colour images. Medium : This setting is normally used for 300 dpi Laser or Photocopy quality artwork. Course : This setting is normally used with Fax or poor quality Printed artwork. Tips on Default Template When you install Universal Engraving a Default Template is installed called Universal Engraving.SDT, Universal Engraving looks for this at start up, on installation this will be place in the Root of Universal Engraving. The Default Template will be loaded on startup with all your saved options. The Default Template is a very powerful tool and gives Universal Engraving a versatility that is unprecedented. Universal Engraving will look for a file called ******.SDT, when loading a New Drawing, where ****** represents the version of Universal Engraving you are using i.e. BasicEngraving.SDT if you are running Universal Engraving Basic Engraving. This will be found in one or more of the Folders listed below. 1 Folder : Program Files\Universal Engraving\Universal Engraving\Users\Name of User. 2 Folder : Program Files\Universal Engraving\Universal Engraving\Machines\Name of the loaded machine driver. 3 Folder : Program Files\Universal Engraving\Universal Engraving. 125 Reference Manual Hints & Tips Therefore you can have a different Default Template for every Computer User, each Machine or in the Universal Engraving Root Folder, this gives you maximum flexibility to configure your setup. In the Default Template you should define at least three Layers, you can then set Colours, Processes etc to these Layers. This will save you time when it comes to creating Toolpaths and setting Tools, Feed Rates, Dwells, Default Fonts etc. Note : There are no spaces between names in the Default Template i.e. Universal Engraving Laser Marking would have a Default Template name of LaserMarking.SDT. Tips on Processes You can uses Processes to set up a Material type database. Each Process can be given the name of a material and saved, complete with Feed Rates, Cut Depth, Chip Depths and assign a type of Tool, this will allow you to automatically create Toolpaths for Objects on any type of material you have created a Process for and Tool for. How to 1 Select Processes from the Production Menu. 2 In the Processes Dialogue box select New and type in the name of a material, say Engraving Brass, Click On OK. 3 Then set the Depth, Chip Depth and Feed Rates that you would normally associate with engraving brass. 4 If you have already assigned Tools to your Tool Database, you can now select a Tool to use for this Process. If you do not wish to automatically create Toolpaths leave the tool entry as none, when you have finished Click On OK. You can create and use a Processes Material database to automate the machining of many types of materials. Tips on Multiple Objects If you suspect you have multiple objects placed one on top of the other. The easiest way to find out is to select the object with the < Ctrl > key held down then look in the Hint Bar below the Colour Bar. This will then tell you how many objects are selected and in brackets how many Nodes are in those objects. If you find you have more than one, Click away to Deselect the object, then Reselect the object with the Pick Tool. This will cause only one of the multiple objects to be selected, then press the < Del > Key. This will then delete one of the objects. If you have more than two objects over each other, repeat the above procedure until you have only one object left. Note : When using functions in the software, it is necessary to read the prompting information in the lower left corner, to find out what the program expects you to do. 126 U-MARQ Universal Engraving Chapter 20 Keyboard Shortcuts Keyboard Hot Keys Hot Keys File Functions New Drawing < Ctrl > + < N > New From Template < Ctrl > + < T > Open Drawing < Ctrl > + < O > Save Drawing < Ctrl > + < S > Save Drawing As < Ctrl > + < H > Merge Drawing , Ctrl > + < M > Import File < Ctrl > + < Shift > + < I > Export File < Ctrl > + < Shift > + < E > Acquire < Shift > + < F3 > Print < Ctrl + < P > Notes < Shift > + < Ctrl > + < N > Edit Functions Undo < Ctrl > + < Z > Redo < Shift > + < Ctrl > + < Z > Cut to Clipboard < Ctrl > + < X > Copy to Clipboard < Ctrl > + < C > Paste from Clipboard < Ctrl > + < V > Delete < Del > Move to Layer < Ctrl > + < L > Duplicate Single < Ctrl > + < Alt > + < S > Select All < Ctrl > + < A > Deselect All < Ctrl > + < Alt > + < D > Invert Selection < Ctrl > + < Alt > + < I > Select Open Path < Ctrl > + < Alt > + < O > Draw Functions Draw Line <L> Draw Rectangle <R> Draw Arc <A> 127 Reference Manual Chapter 20 Keyboard Shortcuts Draw Circle <C> Draw Ellipse <E> Draw Bezier Curve <B> Draw Polygon <G> Text Functions Advanced Auto Layout < Alt > + < A > Auto Re-layout < Alt > + < R > Disk Text < Alt > + < N > Standard Text Composer <S> Path Text Composer < Alt > + < P > Standard Text Editor < Alt > + < S > Edit Dynamic Arc Text < Alt > + < F > Edit Layout < Alt > + < E > Auto-Relayout < Alt > + < R > Convert to Arc Text < Alt > + < M > Kern Text <K> Clear Kerning < Alt > + < K > Path Functions Convert to One Line < Shift > + < L > Convert to One Arc < Shift > + < A > Convert to One Bezier < Shift > + < B > Convert Paths < Shift > + < Ctrl > + < S > Inset Node < Ins > Break Segment < Shift > + < Alt > + < B > Remove Null Segments < Shift > + < Alt > + < R > Fit Bezier < Shift > + < 1 > Shape Corner < Shift > + < Alt > + < C > Fillet < Shift > + < Alt > + < F > Connect < Alt > + < C > Close < Shift > + < C > Force Close < Shift > + < Alt > + < Y > Convert Paths to Segments < Shift > + < Alt > + < X > 128 U-MARQ Universal Engraving Chapter 20 Keyboard Shortcuts Face Functions Combine to Faces < Alt > + < O > Convert Faces to Paths < Alt > + < X > Face Weld < Shift > + < Ctrl > + < W > Face Overlap < Shift > + < Ctrl > + < O > Bitmap Functions Insert Bitmap < Shift > + < K > Trace Bitmap < Shift > + < T > Toggle Bitmap < Shift > + < F7 > Arrange Functions Align < Shift > + < I > Centre to Workspace < Shift > + < Q > Horizontal Centre < Shift > + < H > Vertical Centre < Shift > + < V > Align Bottom < Shift > + < J > Create Group < Shift > + < G > Explode Group < Shift > + < E > Tool Functions Workspace < Alt > + < W > Units Setup < Alt > + < U > Grid Setup < Alt > + < G > Display Grid < Shift > + < Alt > + < G > Snap to Grid < Shift > + < Alt > + < S > Select Language < Shift > + < F12 > Toggle Language < F12 > Preferences < Alt > + < Y > Production Functions Quick Production < Alt > + < 1 > Standard Production < Alt > + < 2 > Preview < Ctrl > + < F4 > 129 Reference Manual Chapter 20 Keyboard Shortcuts Standard Machining Processes <U> Clearing Toolpaths < Shift > + < P > Digitize Plate < Shift > + < Alt > + < 3 > Rotary Workpiece < Shift > + < Alt > + < W > Zoom Functions Zoom Window < F2 > Zoom Last View < F3 > Zoom All < F4 > Redraw < F5 > Zoom Selected < F6 > Zoom Workspace < F7 > Zoom Machine Bed < Ctrl > + < F7 > Help Functions Help < F1 > Note : Not all functions are available in all versions of Universal Engraving, please consult your supplier for more information on upgrades.
