How would you like more than 300 new customers to walk into your business?
It’s within easy reach if your business sponsors this year’s holiday social. The

listening to your favorite music or ... learning something
new. Join us for our monthly Coffee & Conversation where
we’ll brew the coffee and tea and provide delectable treats
and entertaining conversation!
We all know who “that guy” is when it comes to email
writing. You receive his email and find yourself thinking,
“What the heck is his point?” “What is he asking me
to do?”
Are you aware that sometimes you’re “that guy”?
We’ve all been there. The problem is: The way you
typically write an email is not what your reader needs.
Poorly written emails can cause misunderstanding and
lost revenue. They can also be used as a paper trail in legal
disputes – and they’re out there forever!
Before you hit send on your next email, you’ll want to
attend this transformational and fun seminar. Learn the
best-practices formula for writing emails that get the
results you want – and won’t come back to bite you!
This seminar is presented by Summer Turner, owner of
Business Writing Breakthrough LLC, a full-service business
writing consultancy whose mission is to help business
owners develop a “writing excellence” workforce so
everyone can enjoy success.

is right for your work group. During this complimentary

Thinking on Your Feet & Listening Skills
Sept. 25 • 12-1 p.m.
Cost: Free Register at ChamberAcademy.com
Location: MBACC Boardroom, 1200 N. Oak St.
Have you ever left a conversation and thought to yourself, “I
should have never said that” or better yet, “I should have said
something.” Knowing what to say and when to say it helps us
to gain and maintain credibility.
Most people think if they’re comfortable talking with others,
they are good communicators. Good communicators spend
more time listening than speaking. The ability to listen is a
skill. The ability to truly hear another human being is an art.
This “Lunch & Learn” is presented by Lori Free, professional
development coach, to help us learn the benefits of thinking
on our feet and sharpening our listening skills so we can be
more successful in the business world.
Bring your bag lunch and join us. Desserts are sweetly
provided by Cravinley’s Buffet in a Box. Box lunches may
be purchased from Cravinley’s. See registration for menu.

Sports complex to put heads in beds
Myrtle Beach’s upcoming
sports complex has one
mission, and that is to
put heads in beds during
both our peak and
shoulder seasons.
Myrtle Beach’s upcoming sports
complex has one mission, and that is to
put heads in beds during both our peak
and shoulder seasons.
As sports tourism continues to grow,
it’s only plausible that the Myrtle
Beach area work to make itself not
just a premier beach destination, but a
world-class sports destination as well.
This 100,000 square-foot indoor facility
will include eight basketball courts,
16 volleyball courts, a cafe and retail
area, an entertainment zone complete
with a climbing wall and a 1,500-seat
telescopic bleacher system. It is also
configurable for numerous indoor
sports. Additionally, this facility is going
to be located adjacent to the Myrtle
Beach Convention Center and will have
426 parking spaces.
Construction on the $12.4 million facility
is slated to start in February 2014. Work
is expected to take one year before its
grand opening in February 2015.
Myrtle Beach’s evolution into a premier
sports tourism destination is projected
to be a successful and profitable
venture. The total number of sporting
events is expected to go from 21 in the
first year to 33 by year five. By that fifth
year, the projected economic impact is
$28.5 million.
This complex is going to be a major
victory for the Myrtle Beach area.
We look forward to how it will help
us expand and grow our family friendly
brand.

Exceeding Customer Expectations
(Give ‘em the Pickle!)
Expectation – what a jam packed
word! Defined as “the act or
state of expecting: anticipation,”
expectations are everywhere.
Growing up, our parents had
expectations of us. As consumers,
we have expectations of the
businesses we patronize. As business
owners, success ultimately rests on
our ability to meet and even better,
exceed, our customer’s expectations.
So what does it take to exceed
your customer’s expectations?
According to Kirk Kazanjian
in “Driving Loyalty,” it’s about
providing exceptional performance.
Kazanjian says we have to “learn
how to think differently, engage
your workforce more effectively,
lead with empathy, deliver dazzling
customer service, market effectively
online and off, and let customers fuel
your company’s growth in order to
generate a powerful bottom line.”
When you exceed a customer’s
expectations you are delivering
what they purchased and more.
Exceptional services or products
are rarely forgotten. There are lots
of tips out there on ways to make
your customer’s experience with
your business both exceptional
and memorable, including:
Be impeccable with your
words. Provide accurate product
or service descriptions and only
make promises you can keep.
Consistently deliver on your
promise. No doubt you’ve heard
the Tom Peters quote, “Formula
for success: under promise and
over deliver.” The basic premise of
expectation is simple: If you offer it,
deliver it. But the magic lies in going
the extra mile or as motivational
speaker Bob Farrell would say, “give
‘em the pickle.”
Be polite. Customers enjoy hearing
their names, and they like to hear
“please” and “thank you.” It’s free to
provide service with good manners.
Be accountable – take
ownership of the problem.
If you make a mistake, admit it,
apologize and make it up to the
customer. A refund is less expensive
– both financially and emotionally
– than bad press from an unhappy
customer. And follow up: Even
after a problem is resolved, staff can
exceed expectations by following up
with the customer.
Be accessible. Make it easy to
contact you. Respond promptly to
all emails or calls from customers.
Staying close to customers gives
you the opportunity to develop
relationships, to further demonstrate
your expertise and increase
confidence in you and your business.
Being accessible also wins loyalty.
Customer satisfaction has everything
to do with customer loyalty –
especially return and referral
business.
Empower your staff. Make it
simple for people to do business
with you.
Do something for your
customers that they don’t
expect. The phrase “be remarkable”
is often thrown around yet seldom
taken to heart by businesses.
Give your customers a reason to
talk about you in a positive light.
Entrepreneur Richard Branson says
the key is to set realistic customer
expectations, and then not to just
meet them, but to exceed them –
preferably in unexpected and helpful
ways.
Remember the golden rule:
“Do unto others ...” Stop and
think – if I were buying coffee,
reserving a hotel room or selecting a
doctor – what would I want? What
would make me want to come back
again and again?
These days, providing adequate
customer service is not enough.
Surprising a customer by exceeding
their expectation is a great way to
make sure they’ll be back in the
future. Your Myrtle Beach Area
Chamber of Commerce works closely
Horry Georgetown Technical College
to offer customer service programs
to help businesses improve upon this
necessary skill. In addition, MBACC
member businesses are known for
going that extra mile to provide
extraordinary customer service so
by attending the chamber’s monthly
networking events, you have the
chance to talk to other business
professionals and learn their tips
on creating memorable customer
experiences.
We would like to hear how
your business exceeds customer
expectations. Send an email to
[email protected]
and share the little extras that
your employees do to make your
customers’ experiences stand out.
We’ll include your ideas in an
upcoming Grand Strander article.

Pros and cons
of offering
employee incentives
Do you remember as a child how tedious and demanding
your chores were? Do you also remember how much more
you were willing to partake in those chores when your
parent/guardian rewarded you after your task was complete?
Whether the reward was with money, candy or a trip the
toy store it always seemed like the job was less problematic
with some type of incentive. According to author Michael
Batton Kapu, (“Advantages and Disadvantages of Employee
Incentives”), incentives can encourage employee to work
harder, however, employers need to watch closely so they don’t
backfire.

with a 9.02 percent (31,107 additional
passengers) enplanement passenger
increase from January to June 2013.
Contributing to this increase was the
addition of 52,000 arriving seats, 715
flights and a new airline, WestJet.
WestJet commenced service in May
with twice weekly service between
Toronto and Myrtle Beach.
Myrtle Beach International Airport
was ranked last month as the second
lowest airfare in the United States
by Cheapflight.com’s 2013 Airport
Affordability Index. “As a result of low
airfares and additional seat capacity,
offered by our great mix of carriers,
the airport is experiencing substantial
year-over-year passenger growth.”
stated Michael La Pier, director of
airports.

The relative growth rate in average
occupancy for the Brittain Center’s
weekly sample of hotel, condo-hotel,
and campsite properties that rent
units on a nightly basis (see weekly
sample size in the CVB Insider)
appears to have improved compared
to its growth rate during the spring
of 2013. The improving 52-week
moving averages for this segment
(see graphs left) are a reflection of
that. Based on Center researchers’
scientifically random sample of
weekly-rented vacation home and
condo properties (VRPs) along the
Grand Strand, average occupancy and
average advertised price in the VRP
segment seems to be experiencing a
correction, compared to the fiveyear average rate of growth in those
metrics.

Based on Center researchers’ observations
of reservations websites for weekly-rented
VRPs, the 52-week average rate of change
in average advertised price for properties
operating in this segment now seems to be
following the decline reflected in the rate
of change in average occupancy percentage
of these properties. This follows a twoyear period during which the growth rate
in advertised rental prices in that segment
increased at more than twice the rate at
which average occupancy increased. The
52-week average rate of change in
occupancy for the HC-HC group is still
above its long-term average rate of change
while average rental prices in that segment
are hovering at or above the five-year
average rate of growth for that segment.

Ribbon-Cuttings
Your Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce
conducts ribbon-cutting ceremonies as a value added
benefit included in your membership investment. We
bring the camera, oversized scissors and, of course, the
ribbon. A grand opening, an expansion, an anniversary
or a move to a new facility is made more special with a
ribbon-cutting ceremony. Plus, it’s a great way to
introduce your business to the community and fellow
chamber members.
If you’re a home-based business, give us a call and
we’ll hold a special ceremony here at the chamber
just for you. Kickoff a grand opening of your business
by contacting Ryan Smith, membership retention and
services manager, [email protected]
or (843) 916-7238.
