Farm & Ranch Life
.
Dr. Michael R. Rosmann, Ph.D
Understanding behavior is increasingly
important to farming
Most modern agricultural producers recognize that the socialemotional well-being of farm
owner/operators and employees
is a significant contributor to the
success of their agricultural operations. Enhancing the behavioral
health of employers and employees is recognized as a good management practice.
Less is known how the behavior of agricultural producers affects
the livestock and crops they raise,
and vice versa, but behavioral
health is turning into an important matter for agriculturalists to
consider. Farming isn’t just about
biology, genetics, animal and plant
nutrition; behavior is becoming
ever more important to understand.
The sciences that focus on
behavior, like psychology and
sociology, are much newer (tracing to the latter 1800s) than the
“hard” sciences of chemistry and
biology (tracing to the 1700s) and
the related disciplines they have
spawned, such as bioinformatics
and epigenetics. Agriculture is
helping to advance new fields of
study.
What is known thus far? A
growing body of research findings in such scholarly publications
as the Journal of Agromedicine,
the Journal of Agricultural Safety
and Health, The Journal of Rural
Health, and the Journal of Rural
Mental Health, to name but a few,
confirms the positive correlation
between the behavioral health of
agricultural producers and their
output as farmers.
To illustrate, the behavioral
well-being of the owners/managers and laborers involved in dairy
operations has been shown to
be positively correlated with the
health of their dairy cows and with
milk production.
Conversely, the greater the
number of behavioral health
symptoms of the owners/managers and employees, the greater the
incidences of mastitis and bovine
diseases reported in their dairy
veterinary records. Feeling valued
for their input increased the contribution of the employees to the
success of the dairy operations for
which they worked.
“Pay attention to the cow,”
a major dairy publication said
recently, in order to ascertain if
the animal was distressed, feeling
ill or happily going about her pursuit of producing maximum milk.
Healthy and productive cows contribute to their caretakers’ sense of
accomplishment.
Thus, ever more studies are
being devoted to understanding the
psychosocial conditions that contribute to livestock contentment,
because the behavioral well-being
of animals being raised for food, or
to produce food, impacts their productiveness and efficiency.
Previously unasked questions
are being considered. Veterinarians, human and animal behaviorists, agricultural producers,

vival of the species when individual plants develop genetic
mutations that enable them to survive.
That’s how some weed species have developed tolerance to
glyphosate. One or more individual plants morphed, that is--their
genetic code mutated sufficiently
to resist glyphosate’s effects.
Gradually, these individual organisms multiplied over successive
generations, perhaps even with
additional genetic adaptations-leading to glyphosate resistant
weed colonies.
Plants also behave in other
ways. Sunflowers orient toward
sunlight. Corn sends down deep
roots to find moisture when precipitation in the surface soil is
sparse. How do these life-saving
mechanisms develop?
The emerging field of agricultural behavioral health concentrates on maximizing the
well-being of agricultural producers, their families and communities and human effects on the
animals and plants they produce,
but it’s not a one-way interaction.
Agricultural behavioral health is
beginning to focus on how plants
and animals influence human
behavior as well.
In coming years the field will
look different as psychology,
genetics, veterinary medicine,
agronomy, bioinformatics and
a host of developing disciplines
take shape. These are exciting
times for agricultural producers
and the people who engage with
farmers to improve the production
of abundant and safe food, natural
fibers and renewable biofuels.

fish, and other species raised as
food and how do these components influence their growth and
productivity?
• How should farmers consider
behavioral issues when raising
various species so their well-being
and productivity are maximized?
For example, should egg-laying
chickens to be raised in confined
cages with only a few other hens,
allowed to run freely in large
flocks, or cared for in some other
arrangement?
• Should cows be milked on
schedule or only when they choose
to enter a robotic milking parlor?
• What are the behaviors of
mutually beneficial bonds between
farmers, their livestock and crops,
and their outcomes?
• Are animal and plant production methods solely under the control of producers? What, if any,
are the roles of consumers, animal
rights’ activists and government
regulators in agriculture?
There are many more questions about the interface of animal
and human psychosocial factors
that deserve consideration. This
emerging arena will become
increasingly important in the
future.
Plant behavior is becoming a
focus of research. Though lacking a brain, plants of the same species communicate to each other
through release of chemical pheromones that their relatives detect.
Trees and other perennial and
annual plants signal invasive
insects or diseases by chemical
pheromones. Plant colonies can
sometimes slow down harmful
culprits to insure long-term sur-

N.D. farm income declines for
3rd consecutive year
Average net farm income
declined for the third consecutive
year in North Dakota to the lowest
level since 1998.
This occurred despite generally strong yields, with spring
wheat reaching an all-time high,
the second highest annual profit
for the beef cow-calf enterprise,
an increase in government payments and slightly lower crop production costs. Lower crop prices
overwhelmed the positives and
pushed profit down to the lowest
level in nearly two decades.
The average farm profit for
525 farms that were in the 2015
North Dakota Farm Business
Management education program
state report was $28,600, compared with $76,404 in 2014 and
$133,466 in 2013.
Median net farm income, probably a better measure of the typical farm, was $18,999, compared
with $54,666 in 2014 and $91,650
in 2013. Net farm income is measured in accrual terms. It includes
changes in inventories.
The average size of these
farms was 2,371 acres, of which
533 acres were pasture. The average age of the farm operator and
number of years farming were
45.2 and 21.2 years, respectively.
Financial performance varied across the state according to
the profitability of enterprises in
which producers were engaged.
The statewide average net return
per acre on cash-rented ground
was minus $25 for spring wheat,
minus $24 for soybeans and
minus $50 for corn.
For smaller-acreage crops, it
was minus $27 for canola, minus
$25 for pinto beans, minus $14 for
flax, $23 for oil sunflowers and a
strong $60 to $90 per- acre profit
on cash-rented ground for barley,
confection sunflowers, durum
wheat, field peas and sugar beets.
For soybeans and pinto beans not
to show a profit, on average, is
very unusual.
Usually crop farms have
greater net farm income than
livestock farms, but not in 2015
or 2014. The beef cow-calf enterprise profit averaged $288 per
cow and was the second highest
ever, although it was a fraction of
the $660 all-time high in 2014.
Farm financial measures in
2015 were substantially lower
than in 2013. On average, the current ratio dropped from 2.04 in
2013 to 1.45, and the term debt
coverage ratio declined from 1.40
to 0.60 during the past two years.
In 2015, the rate of return
on equity was less than the rate
of return on assets, which indicates that debt capital was not
employed profitably. The average rate of return on equity,
minus 1.7 percent, and the rate of
return on assets, 0.5 percent, were
extremely low. The average of the
previous 10 years was 13.3 and
9.9 percent, respectively.
The average farm borrowed
$562,007 during the year and
made principal payments of
$513,173, thereby increasing
farm debt by nearly $50,000 per
farm. The relationship between
debt and assets (solvency) deteriorated in 2015.
Capital
purchases
have
declined because of the sharp
drop in net farm income.
Average purchases of machinery, equipment and buildings
such as grain and machinery storage and farm shops dropped to
$76,996 in 2015, compared with
$121,488 in 2014 and $194,064 in
2013.
Total government payments,
including conservation incentive
programs, received in 2015 averaged $27,301 per farm, compared
with $15,495 in 2014. A year lag
occurs in commodity-based safety
net program payments under the
2014 farm program. Payments
that will be received in the last
quarter of 2016, based on the
2015 crop year, will be higher.
Similar to 2014, the finding
that the least profitable farms
were larger than average was
unusual. The least profitable 20
percent of farms had negative net
farm income of minus $141,049
on 2,614 crop and 424 pasture
acres.
The 20 percent, or one-fifth,
of the most profitable farms had
an average net farm income of
$214,214 and were slightly larger,
at 2,770 crop and 684 pasture
acres.
The remaining farms, the
middle 60 percent profit group,
had average net farm income of
$23,278 but were much smaller at
1,260 crop and 519 pasture acres.
The state farm business management summary is available
online at http://www.ndfarmmanagement.com. Regional summaries also are available. In addition
to whole-farm financial information, these books detail costs
and returns of livestock and crop
enterprises.

Scam Alert from AARP North
Dakota, Don’t trust caller id
Your phone rings. You look at
your caller ID. It’s a name or a number you might recognize.
But don’t believe your caller ID.
Technology makes it easy for scammers to fake caller ID information, so
the name and number you see aren’t
always real.
Scammers are using fake caller
ID information to trick you into thinking they are someone you trust – like
a government agency, your bank, a
company you do business with, even
the police department.
This practice is called caller ID
spoofing, and scammers don’t care
whose phone number they use.
Don’t rely on caller ID to verify
who’s calling since it’s difficult to tell
whether the caller ID information is
real. Here are a few tips for handling
these calls:
• If you get a strange call from the
government, hang up. Government
employees won’t call out of the blue
to demand money or account information.
• Don’t give out – or confirm –
any personal or financial information
to anyone who calls.
• Don’t wire money or send
money using a reloadable card. In
fact, never pay someone who calls
out of the blue, even if the name or
number on the caller ID looks legitimate.
• Are they pressuring you to act
immediately? Hang up. That’s a sure
sign of a scam.
Remember this: if someone calls
asking for money or personal information, hang up.
You should also hang up on robocalls. If you answer the phone and
hear a recorded message, hang up
and report it to the Attorney General’s
office. Robocalls are illegal in North
Dakota. And don’t press 1 to speak to
a person or to be taken off the call list.
That will likely lead to more calls.

North Dakota Department of Health reminds residents
to use care while cleaning to avoid Hantavirus disease
With the Memorial Day
weekend approaching, many
people will be cleaning cabins
and other buildings that have
been closed for the winter.
The North Dakota Department
of Health (NDDoH) reminds
everyone of the importance of
protecting themselves against
hantavirus disease.
Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a viral infection that causes severe lung
disease.
Infected
rodents
spread the virus in their urine,
droppings, and saliva. The
virus is transmitted to people
when they breathe in air contaminated by the virus, and on
rare occasions it can be transmitted through an infected
rodent bite. The deer mouse is
the primary carrier of the virus.
“Hantavirus infection has
been associated with the presence of rodents, rodent droppings, and nests, which can
be found when cleaning or
occupying previously vacant
cabins, sheds, or other dwellings and outbuildings,” said
Michelle Feist, Epidemiology and Surveillance Program
Manager with the Department
of Health’s Division of Disease Control. “Since there is
no treatment for hantavirus
disease, except for supportive
care, it is important to clean
rodent infestation properly to
prevent infection.”
NDDoH offers the following tips for cleaning a building
with signs of rodent infestation
to avoid hantavirus infection:
* Ventilate the space by
opening the doors and windows for 30 minutes before
you start cleaning
* Do not stir up dust by
sweeping or vacuuming up
droppings, urine or nesting
materials
*Wear gloves and use disinfectant when cleaning up dead
rodents or their urine, droppings and nests
* Saturate the material with
disinfectant for five minutes
before removal
* Mop floors and clean
countertops, cabinets and
drawers with disinfectant
* Use a commercial EPAregistered disinfectant following the label instructions or
a bleach solution made with
one-part bleach and nine parts
water
Symptoms of HPS usually begin two to three weeks
after infection. Early symp-
toms
commonly
include
fever, muscle and body aches,
fatigue, headache, dizziness,
chills, nausea and vomiting.
The illness worsens within a
short period of time to include
coughing and shortness of
breath as lungs fill with fluid.
Fourteen cases of HPS have
been reported to the Department
of Health since 1993, when
the virus was first recognized
in the United States. Seven
of the 14 reported cases were
fatal. One case was reported in
2015, this individual has since
recovered. Nationally, through
Jan. 6, 2016, 690 cases have

Prairie Fare
What does the new dairy
research mean for us?
“Want milk!” exclaimed the little
voice in the early hours of morning.
By the time he was a toddler, our
son knew exactly what he wanted to
quench his thirst. He had whimsical
dancing farm animals adorning the
walls of his nursery. I guess when
the morning light illuminated his
room, the smiling cows reminded
him it was time to eat.
He didn’t even cry, unless no one
showed up at his door. My husband
or I would walk bleary-eyed down
the hall to carry our growing boy
downstairs for some cereal and milk.
Now he’s 21 years old and still a
milk enthusiast. Along with a variety of other foods, milk helped him
grow to a height of 6 feet 3 inches.
Genetics helped, too.
For several years, as our kids
were growing, we had several kinds
of milk “on tap” in our refrigerator:
whole milk when they were toddlers,
reduced-fat milk when they reached
preschool age and nonfat milk for
ourselves. Now we only have nonfat
milk in our refrigerator, even though
I grew up drinking whole milk and 2
percent milk.
Nonfat or low-fat milk has been
the recommendation for many years
for adults and older kids, primarily
because it is lower in total fat and
saturated fat, and therefore, it is
lower in calories.
Regardless of the type of milk,
the other nutrients remain the same.
For example, all types of milk,
regardless of fat content, provide
about 300 milligrams of calcium per
cup.
In fact, milk provides nine essential nutrients. It is fortified with vitamin D so the calcium is used by our
bodies to build and maintain strong
bones and teeth, as well as for other
health reasons.
Recently published research
may alter the dairy fat recommendations in the future. Some studies
have shown that consuming higherfat dairy might have a neutral effect
or a positive effect on our risk for
chronic disease.
Researchers at the University of
Cambridge examined the results of
(701) 683-3044
by Julie Garden-Robinson
Food and Nutrition Specialist
72 published studies with 600,000
participants in 18 countries. They
found that the intake of saturated fat
from dairy did not affect the heart
disease rate and may reduce the diabetes risk.
Another study showed a link
between full-fat dairy foods and
decreased weight gain. Perhaps the
fat makes people feel more satisfied and less likely to consume more
calories than they need.
Many studies and a body of evidence are needed to change recommendations, so we in the nutrition
field will be watching scientific publications about dairy closely. In the
future, we may see changes in the
dairy recommendations.
For good health, we all need a
balanced diet with plenty of variety,
including lots of fruits and vegetables, dairy, lean protein and whole
grains. The most recent guidelines
recommend three servings of dairy
per day.
If you cannot have dairy due to
allergies, you need to find a calcium
source to meet your needs. Ingredient labels are required to alert you
that the food contains a milk ingredient.
If you have lactose intolerance
(difficulty digesting the natural
sugar, lactose, in milk), you may
be able to handle smaller amounts
of milk with meals, or you can try
cheese, yogurt or lactose-free dairy
products. If you follow a vegetarian
or vegan diet, then read and compare nutrition labels on plant-based
calcium sources.
So for good health, should milk
drinkers grab the milk with the red
cap (whole milk) instead of the pink
(nonfat milk) when in the dairy
aisle? If you prefer higher-fat milk,
yogurt and cheese, then enjoy it, but
balance your calories.
For example, if you are having
cookies and whole milk, have one
less cookie.
Not all the research is in at this
point. Just like any other science,
whether it’s the phone technology
we use or the type of car we drive,
science evolves.

Here’s a delicious recipe courtesy of the Midwest Dairy Association that’s perfect for busy days
when you aren’t sure what to cook.
This recipe combines lean protein,
whole grains, vegetables and cheese
with a little kick.
Beef Burrito With Pepper Jack
Cheese and Black Beans
1/2 pound ground beef sirloin
2 tsp. minced garlic
1 c. chunky salsa, divided
2 c. cooked brown or white rice
6 (9-inch) whole-wheat flour tortillas
1 (15-ounce) can black beans,
drained and rinsed
1 (11-ounce) can corn kernels,
drained
2 c. shredded Pepper Jack cheese
Sliced green onion, including
green tops
Prepare rice according to the
package directions, beginning with
about 2/3 cup of raw rice. In medium
nonstick skillet, brown ground beef
and garlic over medium heat. Break
up the beef mixture into smaller
chunks with a spoon. Drain fat and
stir in 1/2 cup of the salsa, then keep
warm. Spread 1/3 cup of rice in center of a tortilla, leaving a 1/2-inch
border. Scatter about 2 tablespoons
of beans and 1 1/2 tablespoons of
corn over rice. Spread 1/3 cup of
the beef mixture and 1/4 cup of
the cheese over the corn. Top with
2 teaspoons of the salsa and a few
pieces of green onion. On opposite
sides, fold in 1 inch of the tortilla (to
hold in ingredients), then roll, starting from the other edge. Place, seam
side down, on microwave-safe dish.
Repeat with remaining tortillas.
Place burritos in a microwave oven
and heat one minute or until heated
through. Serve with remaining salsa.
Makes six servings. Each serving has 140 calories, 7 grams (g) fat,
7 g protein, 13 g carbohydrate, 2 g
fiber and 330 milligrams sodium.

Goehring announces locations,
dates for 2016 Project Safe Send
Agriculture Commissioner Doug
Goehring says farmers, ranchers,
pesticide dealers and applicators,
government agencies and homeowners should bring any unusable pesticides to any of the 10 Project Safe
Send collections in July.
“Over the past 24 years, thousands of people have brought more
than four million pounds of these
chemicals to Project Safe Send,”
Goehring said.
“It is a safe, simple and nonregulatory program that helps people
safely and legally get rid of unusable
pesticides at no charge.”
The program accepts old, unusable or banned pesticides, including
herbicides, insecticides, rodenticides
and fungicides. The collected pes-
ticides are shipped out of state for
incineration. Project Safe Send is
funded through product registration
fees paid by pesticide manufacturers.
“Check your storage areas for
any unusable pesticides and safely
set them aside for Project Safe
Send,” Goehring said. “If the containers are deteriorating or leaking,
pack them in larger containers with
absorbent materials. Free heavyduty plastic bags are available from
the North Dakota Department of
Agriculture if needed.”
No pre-registration is required
but consumers are encouraged to
check the North Dakota Department
of Agriculture’s website at https://
www.nd.gov/ndda/program/projectsafe-send prior to bringing pesticides
to a collection site to ensure their
site remains operational. Sites will
only be operational until funding is
depleted.
A maximum of 3,000 pounds
of pesticides per participant will
be accepted. Pesticide rinse water
and empty containers are no longer
accepted.
To pre-register, obtain plastic bags or for more information,
contact Jeremiah Lien at the North
Dakota Department of Agriculture
at (800) 242-7535 or [email protected].
The collections will run from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. local time at the North
Dakota Department of Transportation facility in the following city:
July 13 - Lidgerwood, 25 4th

Motorcycle safety
encouraged during
summer travel season
MADE IN THE USA
So far this year, six motorcyclists have died in crashes in North
Dakota. All six victims were not wearing a helmet and one crash involved
alcohol. From the beginning of the year to date, data shows this has been
a year with the highest number of motorcycle fatalities since 2010.
May is Motorcycle Awareness Month and the North Dakota Highway
Patrol and North Dakota Department of Transportation are urging motorists to look twice for motorcycles and for motorcyclists to obey all traffic
laws and wear a DOT-compliant helmet and other protective riding gear.
“On average, the highest motorcycle fatality months in North Dakota
are August and September,” said Colonel Michael Gerhart. “We want all
motorists to arrive at their destination safely. Drivers and riders should
follow traffic laws, be alert, and always be sober.”
Tips for drivers to prevent a crash with a motorcycle:
• Allow more following distance behind a motorcycle, about three to
four seconds.
• Be especially cautious when entering an intersection, changing lanes
or maneuvering to pass.
• Do not share a lane with a motorcycle. Motorcycles have the same
right-of-way as any other vehicle, including the full lane width.
• Never drive distracted or impaired.
Motorcyclists can increase their safety on the roads by:
• Obeying all traffic laws and being properly licensed.
• Making themselves visible to other motorists.
• Use hand and turn signals at every lane change or turn.
• Never riding distracted or impaired.
• Wear a DOT-compliant helmet and other protective gear.
