Friends in Christ,
Our Lenten Journey through “40 Days of Serving” is complete…and now we begin our journey through the
Easter season: celebrating the resurrection!!
BUT…perhaps we need to be careful to not move TOO FAST that we miss the connection between these
two important seasons of the Church year.
The Easter/Lent connection?
On Easter Sunday we heard, from 1 Corinthians 15, a popular and powerful resurrection passage: many
times chosen to be read at funerals. Listen in as Paul writes:
Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed – in a flash, in
the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be
raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the
imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with
the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come
true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us
the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
These are INCREDIBLE words of promise and hope from the risen Christ? But WHY? For what purpose
did Jesus do this for us? Let’s keep reading: listen in to the next verses:
Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in
vain.
And then, to borrow from the Christmas season: Do you hear what I hear?? I hear our Lenten journey of
“40 Days of Serving – Practicing the practice of Risk Taking Mission and Service” written throughout
these words.
You see, Easter proclaims to us: Jesus saved us…death has lost it’s sting…so that NOW…WE, the ones
saved and redeemed “get to” give ourselves fully to the work of the Lord because we know that our Labor
in not in vain…it’s building the Kingdom of God in Detroit Lakes and beyond.
So: let’s celebrate JOYFULLY the Good news that HE IS RISEN!! AND, let’s SERVE the Risen Lord in
all we do…for we know this service is never in vain. Easter and Lent ARE connected!!!
See ya in Worship celebrating…See ya in service!!

Pastor’s Corner
by Pastor John
He is Risen! Hallelujah! Literally thank God for this amazing news! Some of us have heard the story about
the empty tomb so many times if feels familiar to us, but I assure you there is nothing familiar about Easter Sunday morning. When the dead don’t stay dead how can we count on anything ever being the same? No one ever
came back to life from the dead to uphold the status quo.
Easter is the day that makes anything possible and it is also the source of all the hope that keeps me functioning in life. If Easter was not the reality then we would live in a world that was defined by death, infant mortality,
cancer, accidents, pain, suffering, war and disease. This is what is normal to us, the world so often being a real
jerk. Easter though is the one day where we are promised something more that just what this life has to offer, and
as my esteemed colleague would say we “get to” participate in this new life that we are promised. We as the
body of Christ now get to participate in the most important this that has EVER happened in the history of the
Earth, or we are all of us just wasting our time, and it is not somewhere in the middle. Either the Easter story
changed the world forever, or it didn’t happen. And if it did happen (and it did) what then is possible? The answer is that anything is possible.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor John

Support Ministries
Ministries that support our pastors and one another in faith growth through worship and fellowship.
Light a candle. During the day in a fully lit room, you may not even notice the flame, but you light that same
candle at night, turn the lights out and the brightness of that candle will be practically the only thing you see.
Common knowledge to the community of faith is that although the light of Christ shines constantly, we see it
most evidently in our darkest times. I speak for myself, but I know many, many who hold this as truth for
themselves as well. I don’t necessarily thank God for the darkness, but when it comes, I do thank God that it
is this time I am reminded of the constancy of the Light in my life, a time to refocus on what (and Whom) I so
often take for granted.
I also tend to take for granted that I, too, am a light. In the ‘Sermon on the Mount,’ Jesus reminds us that we
are the “light of the world,” and admonishes us to, “let your light shine before others, so that they may see
your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” The Light is still, and always will be, Christ. We
simply shine His light in this world. We are one way others see Christ in their darkness (and in their daylight).
Our good works, I believe are a hug, a hand, a caring word, a call, a card. When times are darkest and we are
in the most need, we see Christ the most in others and “give glory to [our] Father in heaven.”
Our good works, I also believe, are every task performed in the ministries that “support our pastors and one
another in faith growth through worship and fellowship,” and I do “give glory to [my] Father in heaven” when
I see them. I thank God for His light shining through His people. I thank God for you. I thank God for your
lights that have shown so brightly for me in my darkness and continue as my days become brighter. I thank
God for your lights that shine so brightly as you serve in so many capacities of Support Ministries.
Easter puts me in an amazingly thankful frame of mind; I get thoughtful on Maundy Thursday, broken on
Good Friday and so very thankful on Easter Sunday! Thank goodness Easter is the final chapter!!
Sheesh, enough mushy Easter sentimentality! Let’s get down to some newsletter stuff…
So, what’s the story with Cory?
Cory Oswald has been a friend of mine since before I moved to the Detroit Lakes area. He’s brilliant. I also, as
a good friend would, refer to him as a Geek; you know, the guy who doesn’t just know how to run a computer,
but knows how to build one? Yep, that’s Cory. Anyway, we were chatting about how we were still looking to
fill the Communications position here & he said, “You know, I’m only working 3 days a week right now, if it
would help you out, I could sure come there the other two days until you hire someone.” The cool thing is that
Cory is the office manager at Christian Fellowship Church, so he knows full well what he’s doing. He had
been taking Tuesdays & Thursdays off to work on a geekish type project and was finished so he had those
days free! Pastor Dave has know Cory about as long as I have, so it wasn’t a tough decision to take him up on
his offer :) Cory has since been in the office on Tuesday & Thursdays, working on our web-site, e-mail &
computer systems, Easy Worship and being all around people greeting, phone answering, back up for me in
the office. If you haven’t met him yet, stop in & say, “Hi!” Thanks, Cory, for sharing the light of Christ with
all of us in the office and congregation of First Lutheran!!
With joy & thanksgiving,
Tanzy Kratzke
Office Administrator,
Director of Support Ministries

The Grieving Process
There has been a significant amount of loss in our congregation recently. Many of us have been affected by one or
more of these losses. You may have lost a parent, husband, wife, child, or friend. Grieving is a process and is different for everyone. It takes time and cannot be rushed. Each of us handles loss in our own way, and there is no
right or wrong way to grieve. While each experience of mourning is unique, there are, nevertheless, some similarities in the process. One of the similarities is that there seem to be certain phases that we all go through as we grieve.
The first phase may be a time of feeling numb, confused, and disorganized. You might feel that things are not
real, that it is a dream, or that your loved one will return. This phase usually does not last long.
The second phase is where you end up doing most of your work. Yes, mourning is work! Grieving requires a lot
of mental labor and readjustment. The trauma of a major loss can also be thought of as a kind of wound. If you
use these two analogies, you can see that you’ll probably need extra sleep (even afternoon naps), good nutrition
(to help you heal), and exercise (even a short walk or moving your hands and legs). Your emotions may include;
deep sadness, anger, irritability, anxiousness and depression. You may feel that you are losing control or going
crazy. Don’t worry. There is no one way to mourn, and these are all normal reactions to grieving.
The final phase of mourning is called the “re-establishment phase.” At this point in your mourning you may feel
you are ready to reenter the world. If you lost a spouse, you may feel like dating again. Or you may find that you
are motivated to do volunteer work for a worthwhile cause. Your energy won’t be so tied up with your emotions,
and you’ll be ready to give to others. It may help to know that this phase will come; you will feel better eventually.
Remember, everyone is different and everyone goes through the process of mourning in various degrees and
lengths. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Many people do most of their grief work in a year or two, but
it varies considerably. Allow yourself the same grace and love our Lord Jesus gives you.
This information was taken from a church resource: The Bereavement Ministry Program.
For more grief information or support contact Denise, Parish Nurse at the church office. 847- 5656
Also, consider attending the Grief Support and Share Group meetings held every 2nd Thursday of the month at
First Lutheran Church. Grief Support and Share Group will meet again April 14th at 2:00 PM in the FLC
Library.
Everyone is invited.
Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Your Decisions Matter – April 10, 10:00 AM Library What are your wishes for end of life care? Learn how to speak to
your family about your wishes, write your Health Care Directive and name someone to speak for you when you can no
longer speak for yourself.
What is a Health Care Directive? A health care directive is a written document that informs others of your wishes about
your health care. It allows you to name a person ("agent") to decide for you if you are unable to make decisions. You must
be at least 18 years old to make a health care directive.
Why Have a Health Care Directive? A health care directive is important if your attending physician determines you
can't communicate your health care choices (because of physical or mental incapacity). It is also important if you wish to
have someone else make your health care decisions based on what your wishes are.
For more information attend this session on April 10th!

We too have a song to sing: HE IS RISEN - HE HAS RISEN INDEED!
We recently said goodbye to our friend and long time circle member,
Eloise Omberg. She was remembered for her love of family, friends, and
food. I remember how meticulous she was about serving at circle functions
when food was served. The food was to be attractive, the table set correctly
and beautifully decorated for the occasion. Does anyone remember the
time, with Julian's help, or was it Julian with help from Eloise, she went into
the woods to pick Trilliums to decorate the tables for the Mother/Daughter/
Friend Brunch? These flowers do not last long and they took great measures
to ensure they were beautiful for the occasion. Blessed be the memory of a great friend!
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the kits for Global Health. The goal was to make 10 each of
Aids/Hospice and Newborn kits. Jean Rolle is delivering them to the warehouse in Fridley, Mn the first part of
April. Health items are loaded into containers and loaded on a ship for delivery to ports in Africa. Personal
Care kits for LWR can still be put together until LWR packing on May 9.
The first WELCA program of the year will be “Spring Alive” on April 23 at 10am. Brunch will be served
and Taunya Todd, a writer, songwriter, and speaker will do the program on “Beautiful - Inside and Out”.
Tickets are being sold—Adults $8.00 and $5.00 girls 10 and under. The proceeds will be used to buy a new
coffee servers as a gift to First Lutheran Church's 100th anniversary. All women and girls are invited to attend.
