Welcome to the first issue of the six-part EDU-Self Build-A-Home
training series.
This course has been planned to take you through the entire
process of acquiring a suitable housing subsidy, buying materials,
and building your own 2-bedroomed home that will comply with
all the necessary legal requirements.
Building your own home with your own effort and learned skills,
will give you an immeasurable feeling of pride and ownership.
Providing a secure and safe environment for your family could
realise a lifelong dream and we hope that you will enjoy working
through the training manuals that will be available through your
local Build it supplier nationwide.
Each issue includes:

An in-depth understanding of house plans, the
relevant legal requirements and preparatory steps
before building can begin.

Tools that are recommended for home building.
EDU-Task:
Building procedures, from foundation to roof and
on to interior finishes: all in a logical sequence.
All lessons can be followed in four languages and have step-bystep pictures to help you master the skills presented.
We have included an important self-test at the back
of each issue, to assist you to achieve a level of
understanding.

For the sake of this lesson, we will focus on this option:
A large group of families in your community must approach the local
councillor, as a group, with a written request to make representation
to your local Municipal Housing Department, on your behalf.
Elect a Representative Development Committee to represent you.
You will need to be energetic, determined and patient, relying on his
support to help you get the project underway.
He will apply to the municipality regarding a suitable housing project
for your community housing needs. Your community will need to wait
their turn.
The houses may be built by a developer or you may build yourselves.
If you build the houses yourselves, it is called the People’s Housing
Process.
Funding additional to the usual subsidy is provided to help to groups
of families build their own homes. When families work collectively to
build their own homes, they save on labour costs and can afford to
spend more on building materials.
With the guidance of your Local Councillor, find a representative from
the PHP Trust to assist your group. Once the project subsidies and
the establishment funding is approved, you can then start building.
