The California Capital Airshow
(CCA), presented by Sacramento
County, recently announced the
addition of Chip Yates, founder
and CEO of Flight of the
Century, Inc. (www.flightofthecentury.com), and his ongoing
mission to ‘make science cool’
as he attempts to break his current world speed record of 202
miles per hour in an electric
airplane in front of the crowd
at Mather Airport on Saturday,
October 5, 2013.
“I want to be an example
to teens, to inspire them. I’m
someone that is using my STEM
education to go out and change
the world while doing something really cool; they can too,”
said Chip Yates. “The realm of
science, technology, engineering and math are gateways for
kids to not only learn but to
truly explore all of the opportunities available to them. If you
can dream it, you can build it
and I’m living proof of that.”
At only 13 years old, Yates
was destined to utilize his education to push the current limits
of technology. He saved $50.00
and convinced his parents to
invest an additional $50.00 in
order to buy and rebuild his first
motorcycle. Since then, Yates
has become a highly dynamic
and proven leader who is recognized worldwide as an electric
vehicle pioneer and green technology innovator.

system to an aircraft designed
by Burt Rutan (famed aerospace engineer, best known for
the design of SpaceShipOne,
the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer,
and Voyager); but Yates had one
problem – he was not a pilot. He
earned his pilot’s license in two
months and had only 58 hours
when he flew on July 18, 2012
where he established a world
speed record for electric powered aircraft of 202 mph.
“We’re thrilled and honored to have Chip Yates at this
year’s Airshow,” said Darcy
Brewer, executive director of
the California Capital Airshow.

50 Years of Love Celebrated

Rancho Cordova, CA (MPG) The Rancho Cordova United
Methodist Church has selected
Loving God, Loving Our
Community, Loving Each Other
as the 50th Anniversary theme
as it kicks off celebrations slated
for September 27, 28, and 29th,
2013.
The invitation to the festivities by the Church is extended to
the public and community leaders/ representatives, especially
to those who have been a part of
the Church’s service to the community over the past 50 years.
The events, all open to the
public, are scheduled over three
days as follows:
• Friday September 27, 6 p.m.
A night of Sharing Memories
and Storytelling with an ice
On Arbor Day, 2013, a tree is planted
on the front lawn as everyone helps.
Recent beautification projects
included the planting of over 25
trees and installing raised beds for
a vegetable garden, which supplies
fresh produce for both the 3rd

The Church’s history began
in 1963 when the Rev Herbert
C. Hirschfeld was appointed
by Bishop Donald Tippet of
the Methodist CaliforniaNevada Annual Conference and
Dr. Kenneth Adams, District
Superintendent, to guide the
destiny of a local fledging
congregation.
The first worship service
was held September 8, 1963
in the Lancer Room of the
Cordova Lodge. The formal
Organizational Meeting, conducted by Dr. Adams, met on
Sept 27, 1963 at the Sierra
Madre Apartments on Coloma
Rd., Rancho Cordova, and thus
the Methodist Church here in
Rancho Cordova was born.
In 1968, with the merging of
the Methodist and the United
Brethren Churches, the official
title of the new Church became
the United Methodist Church of
Rancho Cordova.
Construction of the chapel and
the fellowship hall, known as
Adams Hall, was completed and
first used in the Spring of 1965.
In 1972, additions to Adams
Hall and a Sunday School building, known as Snyder Hall, were
completed.

Rancho Cordova, Ca (MPG) – Not one, but two of
Sharon’s Lounge employees are facing serious
medical issues, so owner Sharon Juarez is
helping with a series of fundraisers.
“Words can’t really express how grateful I am
that she’s doing this for us,” says Zachary Peart,
age 37. Peart worked at the Lounge part-time
until he found full-time employment. However,
he continued to pitch in whenever
Juarez was short-handed. In July,
he was diagnosed with melanoma
on the bicep region of his left
arm, and has had three surgeries
performed. He remains at stage 3
as there remains a chance it will
re-occur. Beginning in October
he will participate in a clinical
trial of a new drug.
Although Peart has access to
insurance through his job, the
deductible is very high. “I was
on disability, but I only get a
certain amount. It isn’t enough
to pay my car bill, insurance,
and daily expenses. I’m very
thankful, blessed, and grateful for
Sharon.”
Karon Brazil is experiencing an unusual
medical challenge. Unable to obtain insurance,
she was forced to pay cash to doctors and
hospitals as they puzzled over her symptoms for
two years. The diagnosis finally arrived this past
January. The hammock that holds the bladder in
place collapsed, so the bladder collapsed onto
the uterus. Then, her uterus collapsed, which
then pushed her rectum out of shape.
Due to her pre-existing condition, only one
insurance company accepted her. Unfortunately,
it does not have the specialist required for her
surgery.
Unable to work, she filed for state disability
and ended up in the hospital for five days. She
was released on July 27 with a poly catheter.
“It’s the kind you wear when you are bedridden
in the hospital or you’re in a coma. I’ve had to
have it changed out twice for leakage and now
I’m starting to bleed.”
To make matters
worse, the doctor erred
in noting her return
to work as August 8,
resulting in surgery
being denied, and her
need to file an appeal.
“I have absolutely
no income coming
in at all. I have filed
with every program
out there. I’m not
old enough (58) for
Medicare, and not
qualified for MediCal. I’m trying not to
get depressed.”
Juarez saw the obvious needs of two special
people and, hence, the fundraisers. “We wanted
to get as much money as we could but not all on
one or two weekends. I wanted to give patrons a
break by spreading it out a little bit so it wouldn’t
hurt everybody financially to help out.”

colonists fought, sacrificed and
died to establish and preserve
freedoms now guaranteed to us
by the Constitution of the United
States. The right to privacy has
come to the public's attention
through various controversial
Supreme Court rulings and news
events of the day. Privacy is not
specifically mentioned in the

the Supreme Court has made
decisions that have established
that the right to privacy is a
basic, human right and as such
is protected by virtue of the 9th
Amendment. As citizens today,
it is our responsibility and of
critical importance that ‘We, the
People’ study the Constitution,
know our rights and know what
the Constitution says and does not
say."

Chamber Celebrates 50 Year Anniversary with Tournament

Rancho Cordova, Ca (MPG) –
The Rancho Cordova Chamber
of Commerce concludes a year
of celebration in service to the
local business community Friday,
October 4, with what is sure to be
the biggest event ever, combining
a golf tournament packed full of
excitement and fun, followed
by an evening Oktoberfest, of
music, food, and flight. In fact,
both events will include a touch
of entertainment from the sky, as
seasoned performers pilot their
planes practicing challenging
maneuvers for the California
Capital Airshow at Mather
Airport.
It is sure to be a party day
for golf enthusiasts, who will
be challenged with a few
favorite contests, as well as
crazy activities at nearly every
hole. Our own River Bend 50th
Anniversary Beer is sure to cool
off those golfers whose game has
added a bit of competitive heat. A
barbeque lunch will send golfers
back out on to the course, ready
to rally. And if there is still a need
for distraction from the game,
just look up, and enjoy air show
contestants sailing their stuff
across the sky, as they practice for
the two-day show. Distraction of
a Photo Booth or Cigar Cart may
be just what the doctor orders for
some golfers to clear their minds
for better play. And a clear mind
is just what will be needed for one
lucky golfer who will hopefully
make a hole-in-one, and head
home with the trophy catch- a
shiny new boat.
But wait golfers! Don’t go
using all your energy up. The Golf
Tourney is not the end of play. This
year, an Oktoberfest will carry on
the 50th Celebration, and everyone
is invited, including non-golfers
who just enjoy a good party. The
celebration continues at Mather
Golf Course, complete with music,
and mouthwatering, traditional
Oktoberfest food, professionally
prepared. A highlight of the
evening will be “The Golf Ball
Drop”, as a helicopter passes over,
and drops hundreds of golf balls
on the fairway. You can even try
your hand at hitting a glow in the
dark ball.
The evening festivities will
feature the famous Red Bull
Air Force Team performing a
parachute drop complete with
fireworks. On hand to meet and
greet the folks who attend the
Oktoberfest will be Airshow
favorites taking a break from
rehearsing for their weekend
shows.
The Golf Tourney entry is $550
for a foursome, (includes four
entries to the Oktoberfest); and
$150 for a single golfer, (includes
one ticket to the Oktoberfest).
For those who wish to attend the
Oktoberfest only, tickets are $35
for one entry in advance, or $40

Raining Golf Balls for Charity on Oct. 4
The Golf Ball Drop will be one fun event at the 50th Anniversary Celebration of
Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce during the Oktoberfest, which starts at
5:30 pm, Friday October 4, at Mather Golf Course (following the 15th Annual Golf
Tourney).
At the beginning of the Oktoberfest Celebration, a helicopter will shower the field
with golf balls, and whoever holds the same number ticket which corresponds
with the ball which falls in the hole wins a prize. There will be cash prizes for
three lucky winners. First prize is $500, second is $300, and third place will receive
$200.
Tickets for the Golf Drop are $10 per ball, and the more purchased, the more the
chance of winning.
Those who wish to enter the “Golf Ball Drop” contest may do so by first calling
the Chamber at 916-273-5688, for a contact list for the charities from which to
purchase a ticket.

“To Be or Not To Be ...”

RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - That
quote from “Hamlet” has brought
up questions by many students
when they first read or hear it.
‘”That doesn’t make any sense”
is what I heard when I first
read it. And the reason I heard
it first instead of saying it first
was because the kid next to me
in class beat me to it. It makes
a little more sense now than it
did then and it does fit into our
lives when you think about it. To
add a word or two, such as “to
be alive” or “to be in existence”
makes it easier to understand
than the original “To be or not to
be, that is the question.”
I was thinking about the news
we heard during our City Council
meeting that Eppie Johnson
had died. It was quite a shock
because we had just seen him at
a recent City Council meeting
and at his Great Race.
We may q u es tio n w h y
100-year-old trees would fall,
but they do; why your back
would suddenly go out and really
hurt, but it can happen; and why
Eppie Johnson would suddenly
be gone is back to that question
of to be alive or not to be alive.
He will be missed but he will
also be remembered for giving
to us something really wonderful
like “Eppie’s Great Race.”
There are many people
who want Congress “to be”
done with the national budget.
Unfortunately, the way things are
going now, most people think the
budget is “not to be” done very
soon (even though it should be).
Andy Griffith talked about when
Romeo first saw Juliet, he gave a
soliloquy. It wasn’t about being
or not being – it was about doing
or not doing. And, as he said, the
do’s won out over the don’ts. We
can all hope that Congress will
get back to what we hired them
to do, and the do’s win out over
the don’ts.
James Madison said, “If men
were angels, no government
would be necessary.” I guess
if all people were angels, we
wouldn’t have to worry about
what people can do to each
other. The shooting back East
has brought quite a bit of anxiety to many people, but there is
no law I can think of that will
turn mankind into angels. While
we will never be angels, the people of Rancho Cordova can and
will continue to help each other
the best we can. Our local city
government will never be perfect and can make mistakes, but
the people of Rancho Cordova
will continue to pay attention as
they have for the last 10 years
and will remind their hired public servants that they have a job
to do and expect it to be done. H

Stantec Volunteers for Street
Inspections in Rancho Cordova
Fifteen employees from the
Stantec Consulting Service in
Rancho Cordova canvassed the
City of Rancho Cordova, looking
for potholes, graffiti, and faded
street signs on September 10th
as part of the company’s civic
engagement policy. Stantec,
which has branches at more than
200 locations (including three
in the Sacramento area), is an
architecture and engineering
design firm that, according to its
president and CEO, “takes pride
in a long history of being part of
the communities we serve.”
John Samuelson, the City’s
Streets
and
Maintenance
Manager. “I divided the City into
nine residential zones, “said John
Samuelson, the City’s Streets
and Maintenance Manager.
“And Stantec assigned teams of
two to look for potholes, graffiti,
and faded street signs in each of
the zones.”
He appreciated receiving
their feedback and will add
their data to his maintenance
schedule. “Their reports were
very detailed, with addresses
and specific issues, such as, ‘an
“S” is missing in the stop line on
pavement.’ The reports will help
us assess the urgency, timeline,
and appropriate City division to
take care of the problems.”

to check out the “Our Town”
art exhibit at City Hall, time is
running out!
The exhibit displays diverse
pieces from talented area artists,
such as Thomas A. Ford, a 25year Rancho Cordova resident.

oils. They take too long to dry.”
He works from photographs
he shoots while cycling and
kayaking.
Ford is displaying three
paintings at the exhibit. “The
one with the poppies was taken
just this side of River Bend Park.
It has burned twice since, so that
scene doesn’t exist anymore; at
least for a while.”
The other two are sections of
the bike trail in Rancho Cordova.
“The one with two bicyclists,
which I call ‘Memorial Day
Ride,’ was taken where Sun
River starts – there’s a bend in
the river. It’s my favorite part of
the bike trail - with the grove of
big oak trees. The other one is
actually in that same spot, right
at Sun River, but it’s right where
the trail bends; a hairpin.”
His cycling days abruptly
halted on August 6, when he
crashed into a pole by the fish
hatchery. “I don’t know exactly
what happened, but the bike went
out from under me. I crushed
the tibial plateau, so it had to
be pieced back together – the
two bones, just below my knee.
I broke my collar bone, a rib,
and bone from my thumb on the
right hand, going down into the
wrist. I couldn’t do any painting
because the cast came up over
my thumb.”
The cast having recently been
removed, he is now focusing
on his own show to be held in
February at the Kennedy Gallery

“Safetyfirst” must be a daily
practice for all food-related businesses. On September 10, in
recognition of National Food
Safety Education Month, the
Sacramento County Board of
Supervisors honored several area
businesses for their outstanding
food safety records.
One of the winners, Wenelli’s
Pizza, serves old-fashioned
pizza in the Arden-Arcade area.
Co-owners Shelly Tyler and
Wendy Williams, best friends for
30 years, founded the restaurant
more than 20 years ago.
“We do all of our safety training in-house,” said Shelly Tyler,
“so we’re very proud to receive
this award for our restaurant and
our employees.”
Each September, the County’s
Environmental Management
Department (EMD) issues
Awards of Excellence certificates to food facilities that had
no major violations noted during
its last three consecutive health
inspections.

Supervisors Approve Hiring Four New Rangers
Sacramento County, CA (MPG) -
For a second consecutive year,
Regional Parks will be adding rangers to its force to assure
public safety and maintain the
parks. Two rangers were added
last year and four new positions have been approved by the
Sacramento County Board of
Supervisors bringing the total
count of rangers to twenty.
“Regional Parks has done a
great job during the tough economic times and taken every
opportunity to maintain service levels and generate revenue
where possible,” stated County
Executive Bradley J. Hudson. “
Rangers patrol 15,000 acres
including 32 recreation areas.
Adding these new
rangers
“allows us to have more patrol
resources in the American River
Parkway and provides additional
response services to the many
other recreation areas we manage,” stated Jeff Leatherman,
Regional Parks Director.
“Having a ranger presence
is critical to public safety and
is a high priority issue for the
many runners, cyclists and recreationalists who frequent the
parks. We will use the additional
resources to address ongoing
community concerns including
illegal camping, off leash dogs
and trail safety.”
Regional Parks Rangers have
full peace officer authority under
the California Health and Safety
Codes and are accredited law
enforcement personnel through
the Peace Officer Standards and
Training certification.
New Rangers can be recent
graduates from accredited training facilities or those with
prior peace officer experience. Rangers enforce the laws
applicable to Regional Parks,
specific County ordinances, and
California Vehicle, Penal and
Health & Safety Codes within
all County Regional Parks.

Dear Ryan,
I know this will sound
mean to some people, but
you simply explain to them
that they are not wealthy.
I remember a time years ago,
after we’d gone broke, that we
managed to scrimp and save and
finally had a little bit of wealth.
We bought a nice car and my son
piped up from the back seat, all
smug and satisfied, “We’re doing
pretty good, huh?” I’ll admit it
was kind of funny, but it was also
a teachable moment. I looked at
him and said, “I’m doing pretty
good, but you’re broke!” That
was a pretty consistent message
around the Ramsey household
as the kids were growing up. If
you’re not working and making
your own way, you’ve got nothing.
The second thing is we taught
them, from a very young age,
was to work. That can start with
simple things like kids cleaning
up their rooms or doing the
dishes after dinner. It should
carry over to the teenage years
as well. Every able-bodied child
should be working and earning
money, whether it’s their own
entrepreneurial idea, at a store
in the mall or babysitting.
The third thing we did was
based in our faith. As evangelical
Christians, we taught our
kids that we don’t really own
anything. It all belongs to God,
and one of our jobs is to wisely
manage the things He entrusts to
us. The first rule is to take care
of your own household—the
important stuff. After that, it’s
okay to have some nice things,
but it’s not all about pleasure.
It’s also about giving and extraordinary levels of generosity.
Teach them to work. Teach
them to be givers. And gently
remind them once in a while
that they’ve got nothing
until they go out and earn it.

account in his name a few years
ago to help with my college bills,
and he made me an authorized
user. Now he’s delinquent on the
card and I’m receiving collection
calls and notices. Do I owe the
credit card company money?

Dear Steve,
No, an authorized user is not
liable. The account is in your
dad’s name, and you didn’t sign
anything. He’s the one legally
responsible for the money owed.
I want you to be careful,
though. Lots of credit card
companies will badger people
and use all kinds of pressure and
guilt trips to try to collect money
from people who don’t owe them
anything. They just want their
money, and they really don’t care
who writes the check.
Get them to remove you as
an authorized user today. Send
them a letter demanding this
via certified mail, return receipt
requested, so you’ll have proof.
Also, make sure they understand
that you’ll sue them for about
$10 million if they don’t comply
immediately. You shouldn’t be
reported to the credit bureaus for
any of this, but companies can
report just about anything—even
inaccurate information—to the
bureaus.
You have rights as a consumer,
and you are not legally liable for
credit card debt when you’re just
an authorized user. But make
sure you check your credit report
regularly in the future. Some of
these companies make a habit
of repeatedly downloading
misinformation to the bureaus
in an effort to bother and bully
people into paying debts they
don’t owe!

With the election of Barack
Obama as our first AfricanAmerican president back in
2008, we were told by talking
heads everywhere that America
had “turned the corner on its racist past” and the healing could
now begin. Racial harmony was
upon us, we were told, and his
campaign theme of “Hope and
Change” would lead us there.
Unfortunately for the rest of us,
the President and his administration never got the memo.
Attorney General Eric Holder
and his Justice Department have
had a number of racially charged
offenses they have dealt with
in questionable fashion. When
2 members of the New Black
Panther Party stood outside a
Philadelphia polling place on
Election Day in 2008 and intimidated white voters with racial
slurs and threats, the Bush Justice
Department filed a civil-rights
lawsuit against the 2 only to have
the Holder Justice Department
drop the charges against both. I
wonder if this would have happened is the accused had been
White Supremacists threatening black people? The Trayvon
Martin case drew out all the
usual race-baiters screaming and
protesting for “justice” and when
a jury found George Zimmerman
not guilty, the Holder Justice
Department vowed to investigate federal criminal civil-rights
discrimination charges against
him even though the FBI had
already investigated it and
found no evidence of racial bias
on Zimmerman’s part. I don’t
remember the Clinton Justice
Department investigating O.J.
after his acquittal. Shortly after
the incident, the president felt
he needed to tell all of us that
“if I had a son, he would look
like Trayvon”. A Caucasian,
Australian college student
was murdered this week by 3
African-American teens who
were “bored” so they drove by
him and shot him in the back.
Not a word was spoken about
this by anyone in the Obama
administration. Ayo Kimathi is
a small business specialist for
the Department of Homeland
Security who in his spare time
runs a website (War on the
Horizon) preparing black people
for the “unavoidable, inevitable clash with the white race”.
He also states that “Warfare is
eminent, and in order for Black
people to survive the 21st century, we are going to have to kill
a lot of whites – more than our
Christian hearts can possibly
count.”
Yes, let the healing begin…..

2013, due to an undeclared soy
allergen.
The parent company, AYOA,
Inc. of Los Angeles, California,

has initiated a voluntary recall of
the various types of quiche which
are sold primarily at Gelson’s
Markets across the state. The
recall was initiated after CDPH
identified the labeling omission
of the soy allergen during a
routine inspection. No illnesses
have been reported at this time.
The products are packaged in
individual clear cellophane wrap.
They are five inches in diameter,
with a circular label, green and
gold print, stating Glendora
Quiche Co. America’s Finest
Gourmet Quiche (LORRAINE,
BROCCOLI, SPINACH, or
GREEN CHILE varieties). The
quiche ingredients are listed
on the back panel. The date
code sticker is on the front
label. AYOA, Inc. immediately
separated its entire inventory
of recalled products and has
notified retailers directly.
People who have an allergy or
severe sensitivity to soy run the
risk of a life-threatening allergic
reaction that requires immediate
medical attention should they
consume these products.

50 Years of Love Celebrated by Rancho Cordova Church

Rancho Cordova in countless ways, but
has reached out in mission projects
that serve needy people throughout the
world. Congregants have participated in
hurricane recovery efforts in the South
and building relief kits for areas struck
by disaster in the US as well as overseas
via the United Methodist Committee
on Relief (UMCOR).
With the
Sierra Service Project and Habitat for
Humanity, both youth and adults have
helped needy families in Sacramento,
Los Angeles, Nevada and other western
locations.
Currently, the Church is an active
supporter of Family Promise, hosting
homeless families during designated
weeks throughout the year. The new
Church Garden provides vegetables for
the Be Our Guest 3rd Wednesday Dinner
for hungry visitors, open to all. Garden
produce is also donated to the Rancho
Cordova Food Locker, and sold to support mission efforts.
Starting in the 1970’s, a pre-school
program sponsored by the FolsomCordova School district was housed in
Snyder Hall, evolving into the Parent
Co-op Preschool. The Church buildings
and outdoor campfire circle have served
as a meeting place for Boy Scouts,
for special events, and with the addition
of a new outdoor stage currently under
construction, use of the venue will be
even more versatile.
New this year, a Cancer Support
Group is offered the 2nd and 4th
Thursdays of the month at 6:30 p.m.
with discussion on pain management,
nutrition, exercise, and group sharing, a
compassionate place to share concerns
and be informed.
