At Make-A-Wish® Nebraska, we grant wishes to children throughout
Nebraska who are 2 ½ to 18 years old living with a progressive,
degenerative, or malignant medical condition. To qualify for a wish,
the child must have a diagnosed illness that is considered to be lifethreatening by his or her physician. To refer a child you think might qualify
for a wish, please contact us at 800-760-WISH (9474).

You would never forget when you heard the news. Where you were. What the date
was. How you reacted. Who told you. Can there be more piercing words for parents to
hear than your child’s life is threatened by a disease?
For most of us, we can only imagine the heartache. But it is this image, the potential
for that moment to occur …to almost go there and feel a parent’s heartache; that is
what galvanizes the Make-A-Wish board, staff, and volunteers in the effort to continually
move our organization forward and closer to its potential of granting the wish of EVERY
eligible child. Without question, we are better today at what we do best: we instill hope
in those who need and deserve it most.
Through the years, we have methodically built a very strong operation. Enhancements
in the wish experience, fundraising, medical outreach, and getting the word out across
our great state that a wish is life-changing. The result? A record number of wishes – 125
– were granted in fiscal year 2015 and consequently many fundraising events also saw
record increases ensuring no child would have to wait on their wish. In fact, sometimes
wishes can’t wait. And we are proud to say that no child was put on a waitlist for lack of
funds. We granted a wish to every single child awaiting a wish last year.
We cannot accomplish this alone – and that’s where you came in. Because of the
incredible support of our volunteers and donors, we are able to continue moving
forward; bringing our mission of hope, strength and joy to more Nebraska children.

Often times, simply the dreaming stage of a child’s wish has an
amazing impact. When a child has been fighting for their life, hope is a
necessity. A wish can be for something seemingly unattainable. When
it actually becomes a reality, it shows a child that anything is possible
...even beating their illness.

got the call that Charlie would be
getting a wish. We were doing our
best to get settled in to our new
‘normal.’ There were days
when life could seem just
overwhelming. When I
got off the phone, all of
my worries were gone
at that moment. I was
speechless and in tears.

past several months than I
can remember, so many of
those times are as we are
dreaming about what Charlie’s
wish will be like when he’s well

During intense treatment plans, finding the strength to keep fighting
can be difficult, not just for the wish child, but for the parents
as well. A wish can help give the motivation to keep fighting.
It strengthens the spirit.

Joy, elation, and gratitude are all seen on the faces of wish children
as their one true wish comes to life. Seeing their play structure for
the first time, getting off an airplane at their destination, or that
moment when they meet a special character produces pure joy at
a time when it’s needed the most. Imagine being the parents ...the
ones who see your child endure so much. Looking at your child
experiencing joy is something to forever cherish.

Emma’s face when she met Mickey and Minnie. The gift of a
week away from the worry we live with and time to just focus
on being a family is a gift we are so thankful for. Make-A-Wish
