Be part of
this year’s
charitable
campaign
By Lt Christopher Daniel
The annual charitable campaign at CFB Trenton, which
runs from Sept. 8 to Dec. 3,
offers a wide variety of fun
activities that promote camaraderie and give everyone at
the Wing an opportunity to
share.
Every fall, federal government employees and military members across Canada
take on a fundraising event
called the Government of
Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign. It is managed
by United Way on behalf of
the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat.
The co-chairs for this
year’s campaign are Major
Catherine Marchetti and
Major Bill Snyder.
“Through this initiative,
all of us here at CFB Trenton can support United Way,
health partners or any other
registered Canadian charity,”
said Maj Snyder. “It is a good
opportunity to share what we
have with others in a fun and
exciting way.”
“We are the third most
important contributor for the
United Way of Quinte,” said
Maj Marchetti. “In fact, last
year we were able to bring in
over $145,000 through onetime donations and pay deduction contributions.”

Firefit competition ‘the toughest two minutes in sport’
By Ross Lees
Six 8 Wing firefighters are training to
compete in what is often called “the
toughest two minutes in sport.”
Corporal Jacques Caron will compete
in the Scott Firefit National Championship in Medicine Hat, Alberta on the
national team. His 8 Wing firefighting
teammates Fire Chief Capt Pierre Muscat-Drago, Cpl Dane Duhaney, Pte Steve
Pereira, Pte Matt Guillet and Pte Martin
Strerenczak will compete on the 8 Wing
team against firefighters from across the
country Sept. 14-18.
Few people realize just how tough
this competition is, at least until they
hear it called “the toughest two minutes
in sport.”
The event is designed to imitate real
life situations firefighters might encounter while responding to an emergency.
They run up six flights of stairs to start
the competition, they do a hose hoist, a
forcible entry component with a sledge
hammer, they do a 140 foot run, drag

Air Cadets complete another summer at CFB Trenton
By Lt (N) Terri-Leigh Saunders
The final graduation of close to 700 air cadets from
across Ontario took place Aug. 19 as they completed
their final days at Trenton Air Cadet Summer Training
Centre at CFB Trenton.
Over the past seven weeks, more than 1,500 cadets
have come and gone from the base and there is little
evidence of their presence left - with the exception of
the white barrack buildings at the corner of Old Highway 2 and RCAF Road.
Almost two thirds of the cadets who trained here
were on a general training course designed to give cadets an introduction to life at a cadet training centre, as
well as a crash course on what the future holds for them
as a cadet.
Other cadets took courses that introduced them to
the world of aviation, possibly setting them on a path
towards becoming a glider or power pilot.
Some cadets chose the ceremonial route and took
the intermediate military band course, and for those
who have a love for the parade square, they took the
leadership and ceremonial instructors course.
Whatever their course, there are a few things certain for all involved…the cadets who visited Trenton
this summer left as swiftly as they came. They left a
little bit wiser, with a few more friends to add on Facebook, and memories that will last them a lifetime.
As with the end of every cadet training season, now
that the cadets are gone, we start planning for next year
because next summer will roll around far faster than
you could ever imagine for the cadets and staff.

By Megan Potter - Regional Adaptive Fitness Specialist
My name is Megan Potter and I’m the Regional Adapted Fitness Specialist (RAFS) for Joint Personnel Support Unit ( JPSU)
Eastern Ontario Region. I work for the Personnel Support Programs (PSP) team in conjunction with the recently formed Joint
Personnel Support Unit ( JPSU). My position was created in the
fall of 2009 when I began work within the JPSU Regional elements. Prior to this, I spent time as an athletic therapist with the
Hamilton Tiger-Cats – a CFL team.
The RAFS is the newest fitness position to be created and
added to the PSP team. It was developed as a part of the Soldier
On program, which encourages ill and injured CF personnel to
attain and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. It supports the
ill and injured personnel by increasing their independence, in developing new skills and in achieving goals through specialised,
tailor-made fitness programs and sport.
I was first introduced to the world of PSP when I went
overseas in November 2008 until May 2009 to work in the Canadian gym in Kandahar, Afghanistan. I came to the position in
Kandahar with a background in kinesiology and athletic therapy,
which allowed me to assist in the physiotherapy department with
in-care patient rehabilitation of ANA, ANP and local nationals
who had been injured. That was my first experience with aiding
injured soldiers. Aiding them in the first steps of rehabilitation
was an incredible experience - not only life changing - but heart
changing.
In the months which followed, I became aware of a position that was being created as a part of the Soldier On program
oriented towards meeting the fitness and sports needs of ill and
injured soldiers, whether they were injured overseas, in training
exercises, at work or off duty. From what I learned and experienced working in the hospital in Kandahar, this was the job for
me.
After a long awaited application process and interview, I was
hired and moved to CFB Petawawa. I have been here now for
one year and, as with any brand new position, there was a lot of
stumbling around in the beginning, figuring out where and how
I - as a RAFS - fit into the organization and how to best serve
the soldiers’ needs.
As a RAFS, I work in conjunction with the Physical Exercise Specialist (PES) at each base within our Region (comprised
of Petawawa, Ottawa, Kingston, Trenton and North Bay). As a
team, we guide members in their fitness goals and working towards meeting and exceeding the requirements of the CF EXPRES test, the BFT and any other personal goals the member
wants to achieve.
While the PES works with those members who have sustained mild to moderate injuries, I myself work with those members who have sustained serious injuries such as amputations,
spinal cord injury, etc. One of our goals is to return the injured
person to the unit either fit for BFT/Express, or with an individually designed program to get them there.
Another responsibility as a RAFS is working hand-in-hand
with the Soldier On program to get our ill and injured members
back into sports and getting them involved in local, national and
international sporting events. This past February, a group of 19
injured soldiers and family members travelled out to Vancouver
where they met up with their sister program from the UK (Battle
Back) and a similar program from the US (Challenged Athletes
Fund).
They participated in a number of events during the Paralympics, such as curling, seated and stand up skiing, and sledge

hockey.
In May of this year, there was a group of injured soldiers,
their family members, prosthetists, physiotherapists and RAFS
who came from all across Canada to attend a mini triathlontraining camp at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. This
event was hosted by the Centre for the Intrepid, one of the three
major rehabilitation centres in the United States for injured soldiers. The first day consisted of workshops instructing amputee
running, swimming and biking, as well as lectures given on mental preparedness and nutrition. All was geared towards preparing the soldiers for the triathlon the following day and towards
developing skills that could be applied to future events.
Most recently, there was an Army run clinic hosted in Ottawa, five days prior to the 2010 Army Run. A group of 13 injured members from across Canada were in attendance, along
with family members, RAFS, physiotherapists, occupational
therapists, national running coaches and Olympic runners. The
intense clinic was two days long, allowing for a day of rest before
race day.
The clinic had a number of focuses, including looking at running gait and squat technique of each individual, a circuit with
core, agility and balance stations, and baseline testing to see how
each individual had progressed over the duration of the clinic. All
members participated and had fantastic results on race day.
On the other side of our program, the bulk of our members
are not seriously injured, but have sustained significant injuries
interfering with their activities of daily living. With the help of
our PESs, we have seen our members pass their EXPRES test,
increase the number of days and hours at work, meet their personal goals whether that be to lose weight, quit smoking or eating healthier and having a healthier lifestyle.
As our program continues to evolve, our goal is to enable
all injured members to participate at the same level of sport or
higher at which they were involved prior to their injury. We
also seek to get the community more engaged, whether that be
through fundraisers for Soldier On and/or Wounded Warriors,
or hosting various Soldier On events. This program is in its early
stages, yet it is exciting to see how far we’ve come in such a short
period of time. More significantly, it is amazing to see how far
our members have progressed.
If you have any questions, or would like to get more info on
the RAFS, please visit the following links or contact your nearest

Place Glacier reconnaissance: a team effort
Considered by the Canadian mountain climbing
community to be one of our premier climbing destinations, Squamish, BC, was this year’s chosen location to conduct the Canadian Forces Land Advanced Warfare Centre’s (CFLAWC) Advanced
Mountain Operations (AMO) course.
The AMO course is currently comprised of
three core competencies; rock climbing, military
installations, and alpine movement. This year, 408
Squadron (Sqn) teamed up with the course for the
alpine phase to insert and extract the candidates
and staff into some of Canada’s most challenging
glaciated terrain around Pemberton, BC.
A tactical helicopter crew consisting of pilots
Major Drew Gagne and Capt Simon Latullippe,
and FE Cpl Mike Bisson, met with the senior
course staff and CFLAWC Mountain Operations
experts to complete the air and ground reconnaissance of the mountain ranges surrounding Pemberton in May. The military crew was augmented by a member of the Association of Canadian
Mountain Guides (ACMG) and three-time Everest guide, John Furneaux, who provided the local
expertise on the area.
The crew from 408 Sqn conducted a full air reconnaissance of the Joffre-Matier Group and the
Place Glacier, enabling AMO photographer Sgt
Jeremy Blair to get all the air photos required for
the student briefings and alpine objectives. Following the air reconnaissance, the pilots landed
in the Mount Olds Col, at 8,000 feet, to insert a
ground reconnaissance team. The team consisted of
AMOs Capt Jamie Galt, Capt Chelsea Braybrook,
Sgt Dan MacIntyre, Sgt Jeremy Blair, and guide
John Furneaux. Using trial alpine touring equipment, provided by Department of Land Requirements (DLR), and backcountry avalanche safety
equipment, the AMOs conducted the ground
reconnaissance on skis, which clearly established
the feasibility of this type of insertion via tactical
helicopter.
After a day of superb flying conditions, the
AMOs were able to establish the feasibility of the
area surrounding the Place Glacier and associated
routes for military training. This training opportunity, in Canada’s backyard, was the product of
successful interoperability, exceptional air crew
skills from 408 Sqn, the forward thinking of DLR,
the work completed on the military ski program
through Austrian Military exchanges, and the Canadian Winter Mobility Training packages that
are on-going.
Advances in the Canadian Forces Mountain-
eering program have been instrumental in ensuring that our specialists are ready to operate safely
in any threat environment, with a focus on training in some of the world’s most renowned mountainous terrain, the Canadian Coastal Mountain
Range.

Trenton teen tops cadet course, awarded ANAVETS medal
By Lt (Navy) Terri-Leigh Saunders - TACSTC
Public Affairs Officer
Cadet Adam Jenkins from 704 Air Force
City Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Trenton is the inaugural recipient
of the LCol J.A. Pepper Award, which will
be presented annually to the top cadet on
the Leadership and Ceremonial Instructor
Course.
In addition to receiving the honour of
being the top cadet on his course, Cdt Jenkins was awarded the Army, Navy, and Air
Force Veterans (ANAVETS) medal. This
coveted medal is awarded on the basis of
overall achievement on the course, leadership qualities, instructional abilities, dress
and deportment, motivation and cooperation with others. In addition to receiving the
medal, he will also be eligible to apply for
a $1,000 bursary for medal recipients who
continue on to post-secondary education.
Cadet Jenkins is one of 115 cadets from
across the province that completed the sixweek advanced course on Aug. 19. Focusing
on the areas of followership, teamwork and
leadership among other things, the Leadership and Ceremonial Instructor Course
builds on this foundation by teaching cadets
advanced principles of instruction and developing the specialist level skill set required
to become an instructor for drill and ceremonial activities.
The course also prepares cadets to assume the role of a senior cadet Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO), return to Summer
Training Centres as staff cadets and instruct
at their home units.

award for Top Cadet from his Course Officer

8 Wing firefighters: first defence against fire
By Capt Pierre Muscat-Drago, 8 Wing Fire Chief
When the bells ring, 8 Wing firefighters grab their
gear, jump in their trucks and respond to the call. From
a downed aircraft to someone short of breath, the firefighters are the Wing’s first response to any emergency
situation.
The 72 firefighters of 85 Aircraft Rescue and
Fire Fighting Flight (85 ARFF Flt) report through
the Wing Construction Engineering Officer and are
housed in the 50-year old Wing Fire Hall (WFH).
They are divided into four crews, who are the front line
response traditionally associated with firefighting, and
the day workers who primarily work in the Fire Inspections Cell.
All Canadian Forces firefighters are trained at
the Fire and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and
Nuclear (CBRN) Academy in CFB Borden in crash
(aircraft) rescue, structural fire fighting, HazMat and
CBRN response, and difficult rescues including motor
vehicle accidents among other more specialized training. Once back at their units, they continuously practice their ‘firemanship’ skills in order to be prepared for
any emergency.
It is not uncommon for the firefighters to be called
out to the airfield to stand-by during routine matters
that contain an element of risk, cautious of the fact
that routine could very quickly become a life threatening incident, such as during engagements of the
aircraft arrestor system, hot brakes or engine run-ups.
Crews are also constantly maintaining fire protection
systems around the base to ensure they are fully functional if a fire were to occur. This work allows them to
become familiar with all of the buildings at the Wing
– a familiarity that becomes essential in the event of
an emergency.
The inspection cell’s role is primarily fire prevention. The Chief Fire Inspector and his team review
building designs to ensure that all of 8 Wing’s buildings, both new and old, meet standards outlined in the
National Fire Code. This is a constant process as it includes ongoing inspections of buildings to ensure the
safety of the occupant. This cell has been providing an
outstanding service to the Wing, as demonstrated by
the lack of working fires throughout the Wing’s infrastructure and in the PMQs.
Educating the public on fire and life safety is an
integral part of firefighters’ jobs, as their jobs are your

safety. One education tool is the fire drill. Fire drills
help alleviate chaos and confusion during an actual fire
by giving people an opportunity to practise an activity
that, when carried out in real life, could involve smoke,
heat and general panic. Fire Prevention Week involves
a number of activities, but is certainly a good opportunity for members of the Wing to take part in a fire
drill.
85 ARFF Flt is involved in many deployments,
both domestic and abroad. Firefighters have a strong
presence in Canada’s Forward Observation Locations
(FOLs). They are there not only to ensure that the fire
systems are operational, but also provide crash protection for aircraft in these austere locations.
Overseas, they are assigned roles such as the Task
Force Fire Marshall, or Camp Fire Chief (CFC). In
such situations, they are frequently faced with the task
of providing fire protection at locations lacking equipment, supplies and trained personnel. The CFC communicates directly with the camp commander on fire
related matters. Using their training and experience,
they develop and recommend fire safety guidelines and
directives for the commander in order to ensure fire
safety for all those on the camp.
After Haiti’s earthquake in February 2010, fire-
fighters were ordered to assist with the rescue efforts
by the Chief of Defence Staff. Within 36 hours of the
earthquake, a team of nine 8 Wing firefighters were
on their way to aid with the rescue efforts, efforts that
included finding and removing victims from collapsed
buildings. Although at the time their formal training
on collapsed structures was very limited, they were still
able to make a significant impact, earning two of our
firefighters the Meritorious Service Medal.
Since that earthquake, discussions on how best to
provide Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) have occurred. Currently, the Disaster Assistance Response
Team (DART) has been identified as requiring this
capability, and the Air Force has been assigned the
role of generating two small teams of Light USAR.
8 Wing’s firefighters, as well as those from 19 Wing,
have been tasked to fulfill this new mandate. As with
all of their other tasks, the professionals of 85 ARFF
Flt are committed to ensuring they are ready to respond when called upon.
8 Wing firefighters work around the clock to
ensure that the airfield has full crash protection and
that all those who work and live on the Wing have
a timely and professional emergency response if the
need should ever arise.

Safety:
Back to the basics
Safety can be a complicated business,
when you consider the rules and regulations for dealing with hazards involving chemicals, gases and fast-moving
machinery.
But in many situations, safe behaviour is simply responsible behaviour.
In fact, there is a striking resemblance
between the rules we learned in childhood for being responsible around
home or school, and the guidelines for
safe behaviour at work.
As children, we learned that we
were supposed to clean up any messes
we made, and we were not to touch
dangerous items without permission
and supervision. These and other simple guidelines are also important for
working safely as adults.
Here are some tips for working
safely. They will probably sound pretty
familiar; we have been told these things
for years:
•

The Contact - 13
If you make a mess, clean it up.
Many accidents are caused by spills
and clutter on the floor. Accumulated debris has provided fuel for
many workplace fires. A spill of
coffee may seem insignificant, but
it can contribute to a serious slip
and fall by a co-worker.
Report any hazards to your supervisor. This can include unsafe
working conditions and unsafe
procedures.
If you move it, put it back. Keeping
things where they belong reduces
clutter in the work area, and also
reduces the chance of accidents.
If you open it, then close it. Fire
doors are a good example of something you should always close behind you.
If you turn it on, you should turn
it off. Don’t assume that someone
else will do so. In fact, don’t assume
anything.
If you unlock it, lock it again. Security is everyone’s responsibility.
If you use it, take good care of it.
This includes your Personal Protective Equipment such as hard hats,
safety-toed footwear and ear plugs.
•
•
•
•
•
•
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance.
If you break it, repair it if authorized and qualified to do so. Do not
leave it for someone else to find.
Damaged tools and equipment
cause many injuries.
If you are not able or authorized
to fix it, report the problem so that
it will be taken care of. Damaged
tools and equipment should be removed from service. They should
be tagged and turned in for repair
or replacement.
If it belongs to someone else and
you want to use it, ask for permission. You might obtain some valuable information about how to use
a tool or piece of equipment if you
talk to the operator.
If you borrow it, return it to the
owner. Time wasted looking for
missing safety equipment and tools
could be better spent on other tasks.
If a co-worker cannot find the gear
which you borrowed, he may be
tempted to improvise unsafely.
If you aren’t authorized to operate
it, keep your hands off. Forklifts are
an example of a machine which has
injured many unauthorized, untrained operators.
If it doesn’t concern you, don’t
meddle with it. Just think of the
consequences of interfering with
someone else’s lockout-tagout arrangement, or meddling with
someone’s fall arrest protection.
Over the past several months, Maj.
Snyder and Maj. Marchetti have been
working with a team of dedicated volunteers to organize an exciting selection
of events.
The campaign begins with a tee-off
at the Wing Commander’s Golf Tournament on Sept. 8.
In addition to the traditional pizza/
pasta lunches, dress down Fridays, slow
pitch ball and four-on-four hockey tournaments, jail and bail, Mega 50/50 and
more; new events this year include a motorcycle ride to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa on Sept. 14 and Mock
Tower Jumps in October. The campaign
will culminate on Dec 1 with a pizzapasta lunch get-together and raffle
draws.
“With all of these exciting activities
and your generosity, we are confident of
another tremendously successful campaign,” said Maj. Snyder.
“We encourage everyone to get involved in the campaign and contribute
in any way possible to this worthy cause.
It is only with your continued support
that the United Way can maintain the
excellent work they do in our communities,” Maj. Marchetti added.

Calling “time out” on anger
Anger is a natural emotion just like happiness and sadness. The average person experiences one anger related
incident each day and will become annoyed at least 20
times each week. Some anger generating situations are
unavoidable. When this is the case, an escape strategy
such as a Time Out is one option to reduce the tension.
A Time Out is taken when you need to take time
to step back from a stressful situation, to think about
what you want to say and do next. Time Out gives
you an opportunity to collect your thoughts and plan
ahead, to use coping thoughts and to return to the situation in a calmer manner.
A Time Out can be as short as five minutes, and
as long as you need. The key is to know when you need
to take a Time Out. Awareness of the need for a Time
Out will make a tremendous difference in how you respond to stressful situations.
Time Out Tips:
Time Outs can be used spontaneously; for example, by excusing oneself to go to the washroom during
a heated meeting at work. Time Out can be a planned
strategy; for example, between spouses who have a
prior agreement to respectfully disengage if a disagreement about a sensitive subject begins to escalate into
an argument.
During a Time Out, if possible, do some physical
activity like walking or working out to relieve tension
in the body.
It is very important to return to the situation to
address it, as soon as possible. However, if the situation
is particularly intense, it may be useful to schedule a
later time to return to the problem.
Time Out gives you the opportunity to relax, problem solve and implement coping thoughts.
You may believe that backing away will label you
“weak,” making you feel like you are giving in, but is
this what is really happening? Often, it is the strongest
thing you can do. Anybody can stay angry and act out
their anger, it takes a much stronger person to back
away and think about what is happening.

Ladies Flyers soccer team
wins silver at regionals
By Anthony Marsh
The inexperienced 8 Wing/CFB Trenton Flyers ladies soccer team accomplished something recently no other
team from CFB Trenton has been able
to do; they recently won a silver medal
at the 2011 regional soccer championships in Petawawa.
This was the first time a team from
8 Wing had ever competed in the regional soccer championships and what
makes their achievement even more
remarkable is that they had never actually played a competitive soccer game
together until the first day of this tournament.
After losing their first two games
against Kingston and Petawawa, the ladies achieved their first victory against
a strong Borden team. This victory enabled the ladies to advance to the semifinal round where they came up against
Kingston again.
After 90 minutes of play, the game
was tied at one, so an additional 10
minutes of overtime was played with
neither team breaking the deadlock. A
tense and dramatic penalty shoot-out
followed where the Flyers ladies held
their nerve to score a thoroughly deserved victory.
After four games in four days, a very
tired Flyers team took to the field on the
fifth day to face a strong Petawawa team
in the final game of the tournament.
The Petawawa team had advanced
to the final with a bye from the semifinals and, therefore, had not played a
game the previous day. This, along with
the fact that the Petawawa team was
very experienced and contained six national team players, resulted in a defeat
for the Flyers.
Despite the defeat in the final, the
Flyers ladies gave a 100 per cent effort
and left the field with their heads held
high and a smile on their faces.
The silver medals each of the ladies
received was a reward for their tremendous commitment, positive attitude and
fantastic team spirit.
