Some secrets are meant to be shared.
Kinder, gentler waves can be found in the calm waters of the Chesapeake Bay, just
off Shore Drive. From swimming to sand castles to volleyball, all the traditional
beach rituals are here. And nothing beats an evening stroll or dining at a fine restaurant as the sun sets over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Anglers can fish from
the shore, Lynnhaven Pier, or launch a boat and head out to the heart of the Bay.
Runners, bikers and campers can explore the lush green of First Landing State Park.
GETTING THERE: From the Resort Area head north on Atlantic Avenue until it turns
into Shore Drive. Continue west, through First Landing State Park to the Bay Area.

secluded beach hideaway of pristine sand dunes and dancing sea oats.

■ First Landing State Park Virginia’s most visited state park is also famous as
the site of the landing of the first permanent English settlers in 1607. Today, this
National Natural Landmark features 19 miles of hiking trails, a bike trail, boat
ramp, and picnic areas. The trail center includes exhibits on the unique

Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge More mammals call this
home than any other local preserve. The refuge covers 172 square miles and
includes Lake Drummond, a 3000-acre natural lake. Headquarters is located at

The Virginia Beach coastline is a major freeway for species
migrating from one point to another. Any time of year, there’s an
abundance of fish making their way through, and a number of
ways to get out on the water with them.
Our inshore waters are brimming all year with a variety of catch-worthy
species, including Atlantic Mackerel, Black Drum, Bluefish, Cobia, Croaker,
Flounder, Grey Trout, King Mackerel, Red Drum, Sea Bass, Spanish Mackerel, Speckled Trout, Striped Bass and Tautog.
Offshore, do battle with the fastest, biggest, most storied fish in the sea. June
through September are prime months for Blue Marlin, Bluefin Tuna, Dolphin,
Wahoo, White Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna.

Surfing, In-line Skating and
Skateboard Regulations
The Virginia Beach Visitor Information
Center provides information and literature
about attractions, special events, dining
and accommodations. Located at 2100
Parks Avenue at the end of I-264 East,
the center is open seven days a week,
with the exception of fall and winter
holidays. Operating hours are 9am to
5pm daily and 9am to 7pm from midJune until Labor Day. Stop in for valuable information to enhance your visit.
These regulations vary throughout the
community in both location and time.

The Chesapeake Bay Center in First
Landing State Park is open daily from

Pets
Pets are not permitted on the public
beaches, boardwalk or grassy area
between the boardwalk and hotel

For international visitors, electricity voltage
is 110, but an adapter may be used to
convert from 220. In the Hampton
Roads area, there are consulates for
Finland, France, Italy and Mexico. Check
with consulates at home for visa and
passport requirements. The Red Cross

translators 24 hours a day. Virginia Beach

printed in French, German and Spanish.

Virginia Beach is a pleasant family
resort, and we strive to maintain an
atmosphere of good, clean fun. You
can assist us in this effort by obeying
our state and local ordinances, just as
you would at home.
Beach Access for the Disabled
Public Restrooms
Designated disabled on-street parking is at
Rudee Loop, 2nd, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th, 12th,
14th, 15th, 16th, 20th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th,
25th, 26th, 30th, 33rd, 34th, 36th, 37th, and
38th Streets. Designated disabled off-street
parking is available at all municipal lots.
Access via ramps for the disabled are located
at every beach access from 1st to 58th Streets.
Wooden ramps that take you all the way to
the water’s edge are located at 8th, 17th, 24th,
and 30th Streets, along with Grommet
Island Beach Park & Playground, the first
fully accessible beach playground opening
in 2010. Metered parking is free for up to
three hours for the disabled. Beach wheelchairs are available in the resort area on a
first come, first served basis from mid-May to

Permanent public restrooms are adjacent
to the boardwalk at 17th, 24th, 30th and
31st Streets. The restrooms at 24th and
31st Streets are open year-round. These
restrooms contain no changing facilities.
There are restrooms with changing facilities
at Croatan Beach, First Landing State Park
and Little Island Park.
Resort Area Parking
The oceanfront resort area contains more
than 2,900 off-street municipal parking
spaces and 671 on-street metered spaces.
Parking meters have a three hour time limit
and are enforced April 1 – October 31. Municipal parking lots are located at Rudee
loop (3 lots), 19th Street and Pacific Avenue,
25th Street and Pacific Avenue and at Croatan
and Sandbridge beaches. Municipal parking
garages are located between Atlantic and
Pacific Avenues on 9th and 30th Streets.
Municipal parking lots and garages charge
a daily fee. Special hourly, weekly, and
monthly rates are available at various
locations in the resort area. Overnight
parking is only available at the 9th and 31st

Lifeguards
Lifeguards are on duty from 9:30am to dusk
daily from mid-May to mid-September, between
1st through 41st Streets and at Croatan,
Little Island Park and Sandbridge beaches.
Play It Safe
• Never swim alone. Swim near a lifeguard.
• Ask a lifeguard about water conditions.
• Red flags = dangerous water.
• Know your swimming ability.
• Stay close to shore.
• Floatation devices are no substitute for
swimming ability.
• If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to
shore.
• Never leave children unattended.
• Don’t dive. Go feet first.
• Avoid the water at night, dawn, or dusk,
and avoid shiny jewelry or swimwear.
• Body surfers should keep their arms in
front to avoid injury.
• Protect your skin. Use sunscreen.
