Jokers are the topic of this month’s cover. Anyone care to guess how many
tickets there are out there with the word “Joker” in the name? A quick search on
lotology.net will find 521 of them (as of this writing, of course). But there are
others! Some of these tickets have a picture of a Joker, but the word doesn’t
appear in the text on the ticket. (WA-0079 is an example). If you’re a topical
collector, write an article about your collection - in Microsoft Word if at all
possible. Include a few scans of your collection, and email it to me. We’ll
publish it in the next newsletter!
Lotovention is rapidly approaching! By the time you read this, a few lucky attendees will be trolling through
mountains of tickets on the grab tables. I’m always amazed at the number of tickets that show up on grab tables each
year. Literally thousands! If you are looking for a stack of brand-new, crisp, sample voids to trade or giveaway you
would need a moving van to haul away what you can pick up at Lotovention.
In July I had a surprise visit from Ron Thurner, who was on a road trip from California to Denver. Ron included
Albuquerque on his multi-state odyssey in the middle of summer. He also left me two binders of his Pull-Tab
collection, all pre-2000 issues. These will be scanned and added to the online guide and my own ticket website at
lotology.net. What the GLCS needs right now is someone who collects pull-tabs and would like to step up and take on
the role of Compiler for these collectibles.
Speaking of the website, some of you may have noticed tickets appearing with a funny looking GLCS ID – namely
with a question mark in the ID. These tickets appear at the ‘end’ of a thumbnail display page, or in the correct location
in a game number sorted list. Art Chamberlin and I had been preserving ticket data for those rare items we found that
weren’t in the guide. We tried to come up with some way to number them that would make sense. They would be
numbered uniquely from official GLCS ID’s and quickly identifiable as such. At first we were coding up the dates in
the ID, so a Massachusetts ticket that was game number 798 issued on April 10, 2011 would be coded up as
MA?110410, just as a placeholder until an official GLCS ID was assigned by Ron. Over time this was rather
cumbersome and really didn’t help with identification. Lately I have been changing these entries to be similar to a
GLCS ID, but instead of a Dash, they use a question mark. And instead of a date, I just use the state game number,
along with A,B,C.. etc suffixes if they are members of a set. So that same ticket example from Massachusetts would
now be identified as MA?798 until an official GLCS ID is assigned. Any comments about this are welcome. Check
out the website and you can see an occasional ‘unidentified’ ticket.
I’m off to Lotovention!

I’m attaching a copy of Idaho’s lottery ticket
“Super Splatters” (ID-0538).
You scratch the windshields, and if you uncover
bird poop, you win ! I’m submitting this as the
most gross and disgusting lottery ticket in the
world. (lol)

President’s Message
I hope everyone is having a great summer and enjoying the outdoors and
collecting tickets. As I am writing this the weather here in Philadelphia is hazy,
hot and humid. The Lotovention is just a few weeks away and this being the
August Lotologist, a full report on the Lotovention will be in the September
Lotologist newsletter.
Some time ago I asked our membership to write me and tell me how they organize, store or
keep their collections. Two of you were kind of enough to respond.
John Flara writes that he better have some sort of system of management considering he has
over a million tickets which includes many duplicates. He maintains 3 separate collections, all by
GLCS catalog numbers and by state. John collects scratch off tickets, sample voids and passive
tickets. He uses 8 pocket plastic pages to store his $1.00 tickets back to back giving him 16 tickets
to a page. Johnny keeps his oversized tickets in boxes. Each size is in a separate box, which gives
him uniformity and more space. All duplicates are by state and numerically filed in hopes of future
use. These boxes of tickets are stored in two Amish type sheds- one is 10’ x 10’ and the other is 10’
x 18’. When asked why he keeps so many dupes, he responds: “I could never push aside the past
or anything historical and all tickets become just that. That is why I started collecting lottery tickets
with dates that are now known as passive tickets. To me passives are the pioneer lottery tickets”.
Alan Oster writes that he buys 3 ring binders with slipcovers from Lighthouse Publications,
located in Fairfield, NJ. He also uses Vario clear plastic sheets with various pockets to fit the
different sizes and shapes of his lottery tickets. He uses this system even though it is kind of
expensive, but Alan feels they work best to protect and show off his collection.
I also use 3 ring binders but with Ultra Pro plastic pages, which come in various sizes. These
pages come in a variety of sizes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 & 8 pockets. I collect both foreign and domestic
tickets, scratch and sample voids of each ticket along with passive tickets These tickets are placed
back to back in each page with a piece of black construction paper placed in between them. I store
my actually collection by state, country and size in these 3 ring binders. My duplicate tickets are
stored in file draws and boxes.
Right now my garage, living room, dining room and basement are full of bags and boxes of
tickets, raffle prizes, silent auction lots and prizes for the album contest all for this year’s
Lotovention. Once this year’s Lotovention is over I hope to get my collection and house back in
some sort of order. Of course all this is really a dream considering how many tickets I will be bring
home from the Lotovention. I can dream can’t I???
Please forgive me if I have not answered your trade for a while now. Most of my spare time is
devoted to getting ready for the Lotovention.
I have two more requests. Please send Ron Moermond any and all new tickets you may find so
he can continue listing them for us. I also have another question. How did you start collecting lottery
tickets? What or who got you interested in this great hobby? Drop me an article, it can be just a few
sentences or a paragraph or two. I hope to use what you write in a future article for the newsletter.
Happy collecting,
Steven Gilbert
