Dear Parishioner:
There is a place in the Old Testament where
people come up to one of the “judges” of
the early Jewish people and say to him:
“Now that you are old and your sons don’t
follow your teaching.…” This reminds me
of one of the old songs (who was it, Frank
Sinatra or Dean Martin?) that went: “Boy
ain’t that a kick in the head!” This is a
common experience for parents nowadays
especially when it comes to the lack of practicing the Catholic faith in
their children and grandchildren, but as you can see the experience is
as old as the Old Testament.

What are the thoughts and feelings that parents have going through
experiences like this? Common ones would be questioning oneself,
what did I (we) do wrong? And the guilt that goes with that question.

There is usually sadness as well, and there could
also be some anger and frustration because they
won’t accept what you want to give them that you
are convinced is good, and good for them. And
because the experience is often ongoing, and feels
like there is no change in sight, the feelings are also
then “gifts that keep on giving.”
As you know here in America we call priests
“father” even though they don’t have biological
children, the same way Jesus referred to himself as
the “groom” even though he did not marry a
physical wife. So even though I don’t have physical
children, it does not mean that I am not having my
own experience of this very thing. As you also
know, one of my real concerns (some people might
call it a “pet peeve”) is what the use and prevalence
of technology is doing to people, society and
especially to children; and especially how
“entertainment-value” is the primary standard by
which things are judged for their value.
My own fear and sadness (and frustration) about this
and how I feel it is taking people away from church
came to the surface last week, and it took the form
of a song. Here are the words. Maybe I will play it
for you one Sunday at Mass. It is called
“Cyberspace.”
Show me Facebook, send me text;
We’ll go from one right to the next.
We’ll cast off old religious ways
And fly like angels in cyberspace.
Points of light and digital bliss
With life like this we’ll never miss
Love that’s optional you will see
In a world that is so free.
So connect with me on your hand-held tool
We’ll be best friends forever, cool.
And where we’ll go in brave cyberspace…
There are no limits and there is no place.
Will this culture of virus pride
Eat us away from inside,
And take us down to an earthly hell,
Goin’ happily, time will tell?

Looking Toward Lent: Once again
this year, we invite parishioners to
bring in their old palms to be used to
make the ashes for Ash Wednesday,
February 18th. Please place them in
the basket in the Gathering Space.
Women’s Lenten Retreat: Anyone interested in
helping to plan the Women’s Lenten Retreat is
welcome at our planning meeting on Monday,
February 2nd at 7:30 PM in the Youth Ministry Room.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION and FORMATION
PSR Day of Caring: Several of our elementary PSR
classes participated in the PSR Day of Caring. Classes
worked in the Church and others made cards for the
sick and shut-ins. Our kids and teachers are wonderful!
Called to ProtectTM: The Called to Protect
ProgramTM will be taught in the PSR Elementary
classrooms again this year. This program is designed
to prevent the abuse of children by giving them
awareness skills to keep them safe. The Called to
ProtectTM lessons are noted on your child’s 2nd
semester schedule that was sent home last Tuesday.
Parents should feel free to stop by the PSR Office or
call if they have any questions or concerns. Lesson
plans and opt-out forms are available.
Middle School/Senior High PSR: A letter, 2nd
semester schedule, and an attendance report were
mailed to the parents of Middle School and High
School students. The Called to ProtectTM lessons will
be taught in Grade 7 only. A letter to Grade 7 parents
was also included with information and the
opportunity to view the DVDs before they are shown
to their kids.
THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
MENTOR, OHIO
The Society of St. Monica will have a Holy Hour in
the Chapel this Wednesday, January 28th from 7:30
to 8:30 PM. We will recite the Rosary and have
Exposition and Benediction. Please join us for this
hour of prayer and devotion as we pray for the return
of family members and other Catholics in our area to
the practice of their faith, as well as those who are
searching for Christ in the Catholic faith.
Pre-Baptism Class: If you are expecting or have
recently welcomed your first child into your family,
please plan on joining us for our next Pre-Baptism
class on Monday, February 2nd at 7:00 PM in the
Youth Ministry Room. This class is required before
the baptism of your child. Please call the Parish
Office at 440-257-5544 to register.
Mardi Gras Gala
All mainboard tickets for the Reverse Raffle are
sold, but you can still join the fun—dinner-only
tickets remain available at $45 per person. There
will be some new and exciting games this year and
plenty of opportunities to win!

talk. There is no charge for Terry’s presentation
but a good will offering will be accepted to
benefit the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry. All
are welcome.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: Baptisms are
celebrated on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sunday at 1:00 PM
and on the 4th Sunday at 10:00 AM and Noon
Masses, and should be scheduled at least one month in
advance. New parents are required to attend a prebaptism class which is offered every other month.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION: A process
of inquiry and introduction of Gospel values and an
opportunity for the nurturing of faith for adults and
children. Entry to the program is ongoing. Call the
Parish Office for more information.
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE: Marriage
preparation must begin at least six months prior to
wedding, although a one-year preparation time is
preferable.

Doors to the Raffle will open at 6:15 PM.

The dinner this year is a buffet; the buffet will be
open from 6:15 to 8:00 PM.

This is a Gala Event. We understand that a dress
or suit and tie isn’t for everyone. We do,
however, ask that you maintain a business casual
dress code.
FUNERAL PLANNING: Funeral Liturgies can be
pre-planned. Contact Fr. Tim or Deacon Bob to
select readings and music.

Ladies, remember your slippers or flip flops for
dancing! No bare feet are allowed in the
Ballroom.

Council meets on the First Wednesday at 7:30 PM

PASTORAL CARE/ANOINTING OF THE SICK:
We are most anxious to help anyone who cannot
celebrate Mass with us in Church because of
illness, handicap, or age. If you wish Sacraments
or visitation by a Minister to the Homebound, call
the Parish Office. Please notify the Parish Office
of any hospital stay.

Hospice of the Western Reserve Warehouse Sale:
Donations are needed for the next sale, to be held
Friday, February 20th, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and
Saturday, February 21st from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
at Hospice of the Western Reserve Headquarters
(17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland). Proceeds support
patients and families of Hospice of the Western
Reserve. Items accepted are gently used indoor and
outdoor furniture, other household items,
collectibles, framed artwork, and holiday items. To

Celtic Ball: St. John Vianney
Parish presents their 12th
Annual Celtic Ball on
Saturday, March 7th at
LaMalfa Party Center. Doors
open at 6:00 PM and dinner is
served beginning at 6:30 PM.
The event will feature music
by the McLean Avenue Band as well as Irish
dancing and music, great food, open bar, door prizes,
an Irish raffle, silent auction and much more! Tickets

Touch a Life...Become a Hospice Volunteer.
Hospice is a philosophy of care, not a place. Patients
are cared for wherever they call home. Volunteers
are a vital part of the team. Opportunities to serve
are diverse: visit patients and families to provide
companionship, socialization and comfort, help with
legacy work, transportation, light housework, meal
preparation, run errands, make phone calls, help with
clerical work, attend health fairs, make a
presentation. Volunteers with specialized professional
qualifications and training are also needed: attorneys,
licensed hairdressers, massotherapists, pet therapy dogs
and their handlers.
Volunteer education is held frequently throughout
northern Ohio. Team and most volunteers not having
contact with patients take 4 hours of training while
patient care volunteers have 16 hours. Call Hospice

for Zebedee to watch his two sons walk away to
