2016. (This is the last day of Quarter 3.)
TRACK
7th & 8th track practice begins on Monday, March 21. If your student is interested in joining track,
please make sure you have a physical turned into the office before track starts, and sign up in the
office.
FORM AND FITNESS
The third session of form and fitness for 7th and 8th graders begins on Monday, March 14 and runs
through Friday, May 6.
Girls’ Tennis
Attention all 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls: Would you like to learn a sport that would
last a lifetime? If so, join the middle school tennis program for the spring 2016
season. You can sign up at the activities window with Mrs. Diemert. The season will
begin Monday, April 4 and last until the end of May. Matches will be played against
other Fargo, Moorhead, Wahpeton, and Valley City teams. There will also be an
intramural team for 6th grade girls. If you want to play a fun sport with your friends,
be sure and sign up today for the Cheney intramural or middle school girls’ tennis team.
Band Concert
The Band Departments of West Fargo High School and Cheney Middle School will present a combined
concert on Tuesday, February 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the West Fargo High School gymnasium. This concert will
showcase all the current band students from Cheney Middle School and West Fargo High School. Nearly
450 band students in grades 6 through 12 will be featured performing a variety of musical selections. The
concert will conclude with a grand finale in which all the band students will be performing together. The
students will be wearing specially made t-shirts to commemorate this special event. The band directors
from the two schools coordinating the concert are Nadine Roach, Jason Carlson, Karen Morrison and Sue
Jordahl. Admission is free. For any questions, please contact Karen Morrison at 356-2090.
Pick-up/Drop-off
Navigating the halls of Cheney Middle School can be a real challenge somedays. Navigating the parking
lot can be just as challenging. We move a lot of vehicles and students around CMS during a school day.
 Dropping off/Picking up your child closest to the sidewalk helps ensure his or her own safety.
 Having your student ready to disembark or quickly embark will limit your time in the lot and gives
others a chance to do the same.
 Using vehicle signals allows others to be aware of your intentions.
 Having an alternative pickup location off campus may be a quicker way to make that after-school
appointment.
Over all, please be patient and aware of your constant changing environment when navigating around

Parent/Teacher Conferences
The faculty and administration of the Cheney Middle School are pleased to announce that spring ParentTeacher Conferences at the Cheney Middle School have been set. Conferences will be from 4:30 P.M. until
8:15 P.M. on Thursday, March 3 and Tuesday, March 8. You may go directly to the teacher’s locations.
There will be no report cards or schedules to pick up. You will need to know your student’s schedule.
Most conferences are not scheduled; however, we ask that the parents of students whose last name begins
with the letters A through K attend conferences on Thursday, March 3, and the parents of students whose
last name begins with the letters L through Z please attend conferences on Tuesday, March 8. This will help
with parking and ought to help alleviate standing in line. Parking will be allowed in both the east (bus
loading area) parking lot as well as the main parking lot on the northwest side of the school.
Visits by parents to our school encourage positive communication with teachers and other staff. It is
important that we work together in providing the educational experiences our students deserve. Please accept
our invitation to attend our spring conferences. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, March 3 or
Tuesday, March 8.
HEAD LICE
What are head lice?
Head lice are small insects (less than 1/8-inch long). They range in color from red to brown, black, yellowtan or gray-white. Head lice live on blood they draw from the scalp and lay tiny, gray/white eggs (known
as nits) on a hair shaft near the scalp. The warmth from the scalp is needed for the eggs to hatch. Head lice
are not known to spread disease.
Who is at risk for head lice?
Head lice infestations occur in all socioeconomic groups, are not an indication of poor hygiene, and can
affect anyone.
What are the symptoms of head lice?
Most people who have head lice do not have symptoms at all. When symptoms do occur, the most
common signs include itching of the skin on the scalp or neck where lice feed. Nits are glued to hair,
commonly behind ears and at or near the nape of the neck. Scratching, especially behind and around ears
and at the nape of the neck, may lead to open sores and a bacterial infection that also may cause swollen
lymph nodes.
How soon do symptoms appear?
Symptoms appear when a live louse is present.
How are head lice spread?
Head lice are spread most commonly by direct contact with hair. Additionally, infested people can also
spread head lice by sharing combs, brushes, hats, blankets or sheets with others, but this is not very common.
It can be spread only by live lice and not nits.
When and for how long is a person able to spread head lice?
Head lice will spread until they are treated with a chemical that kills lice and until the eggs have been killed
or removed.
How is a person diagnosed?
Diagnosing head lice is done by identifying the presence of live lice or nits within ¼-inch of the scalp.
Identification of eggs and lice with the naked eye is possible; however, the use of a hand lens or microscope
may help to confirm the identification.
What is the treatment?
Over-the-counter treatments and prescriptions that kill lice and most viable eggs are available. Follow the
directions on the label. Retreat nine days after initial treatment if not otherwise specified on the product
label. Contact your health-care provider or local public health unit for more information.
Does past infection make a person immune?
No. A person who previously had head lice may get it again.
What can be done to prevent the spread of head lice?
Follow these steps to prevent the spread of head lice: Avoid sharing headgear, coats, hats, hair ornaments,
helmets, headphones, combs, brushes, towels, and bedding.

Gooseberry Park Players announces auditions for July 2016 production
BYE BYE BIRDIE!
This Tony award winning musical, set in the late 1950’s, tells the story of a rock and roll heart throb who
is about to be inducted into the army but not without a final nationally televised good-bye from small
town America. BYE BYE BIRDIE has been called “the tops in imagination and good old-fashioned
fun.” This show has a significant number of male and female roles – singing, dancing and acting (over 40
named characters) for students ages 11 - 18. Mark your calendars for the following dates: Cast and Crew

Career Exploration Activity
7th graders will be participating in a Career Exploration activity the 2nd week of February. This activity uses
www.RUReadyND.com, sponsored by Student Loans of North Dakota, as an on-line tool to explore
Multiple Intelligences and learning about the top two that each student ranked highest in after
completing an on-line assessment.
In addition, students will explore careers related to their top two multiple intelligence areas.
Cheney Middle School
2016 Spring Fundraiser
Cheney Middle School has joined together with The Chip Shoppe to generate extra funds for all of
our Academic Teams at Cheney. Profits from this fundraiser will be allocated to each TEAM for our
spring community service projects. We invite you to choose from a wonderful selection of quality
products, including fun summertime gifts, and food made in the Midwest!
The goal of each student is to sell or purchase 5 items from the Gourmet Delights, Simply
Spring Brochure and/or the online sales site. Students and families can sell more or less; we
appreciate any amount of support!
Please help by making “friendly” sales to family, neighbors, co-workers, and utilize online selling for
out of town friends and relatives.

The 2016 Cheney Geography Bee
Joe L. is the 2016 School Champion and will compete in the State Geography Bee in
Bismarck this March.
Thank you to all of the Cheney Middle School Social Studies teachers that
administered the preliminary test to their classes.

scoring and timing during the school competition.
North Dakota Junior High School Choir
Four students from Cheney Middle School were chosen for the North Dakota Junior High School Choir held
in Bismarck, North Dakota. They were the following: Lauren Klomstad, Taryn Troftgruben, Bryer Moody
and Parker Degerness. The students were chosen by audition, and they will attend the two day event
February 5 and 6. Congratulations and a job well done representing Cheney Middle School!

The University of North Dakota (UND) Rural Collaborative Opportunities for
Occupational Learning in Health (R-COOL-Health) Scrubs Academy is a four
day/three night camp held on the University of North Dakota campus.
The Scrubs Academy encourages middle school students from across North Dakota to
pursue a career in health care. Students participate in hands-on activities and receive
information related to a variety of health care professions. In addition to the experiences
with health care professionals, students are certified in Friends and Family CPR and the
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
The Scrubs Academy serves as a mini-preparation program to strengthen academic skill
sets associated with health disciplines, introduce adolescents to a higher education
experience, and foster a relationship between the students and the University. Students
will sleep in the UND dorms all three evenings.
