Walk-in History
Naper Settlement welcomes over 140,400 visitors
each year to our outdoor history museum that
features fun, immersive learning experiences for all
ages. Engaging exhibits, professional educators and
hands-on activities presents the history of Naperville
from the pioneer times to present day.

Blacksmithing 101
Saturdays, September 10 & 17, 8–11 AM
$150/person includes both sessions 
Learn the art of blacksmithing with an introduction
to safety, tools and the forge in this two-session
class. Participants will learn hammer techniques
while making an item to take home. Ages 18 and
up. All materials are provided.

Paw Paw Post Office
Saturday, September 17, 6–7:30 PM
$15/person, $12/Settlement-6 members and above 
Walk in the footsteps once trod by Naperville’s
early residents and engage with museum experts
about the significance of the Paw Paw Post
Office. Tour the 1833 residence of Naperville’s
first postmaster Alexander Howard and come to
understand its role in the town’s postal history.
Guest tour guide Tom Majewski offers insight into
the town’s and nation’s postal history. Majewski, a
commercial and industrial electrical estimator, is
a privy digger, who has been unearthing history in
unlikely places for more than 20 years. For ages 13
and up only. Includes stair climbing.

Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who
Made Modern America*
September 13–October 12
As ‘Hamilton: An American Musical’ hits the Chicago
stage in September, celebrate Hamilton’s history!
Featuring reproductions from the Gilder Lehrman
Collection and the Library of the New York Historical
Society, learn how this visionary and founding father
helped to shape the America we live in today. Exhibit
also will feature Revolutionary War era artifacts from
a local private collection.
Merry & Bright: Glass Ornaments
From Around the Globe

Enjoy the beautiful sparkle of European- and
American-made glass Christmas ornaments from a
private collection. Learn about the production and
fascinating history of these holiday classics.

Freedom: A History of US*
This class will combine an overview of
the history of letterpress printmaking, its
roots in Naperville, and its resurgence
as a sought after art form with a handson workshop featuring a range of
techniques for using vintage type to
making personalized creations. Ages
18 and up. All materials are provided.

This exhibition documents and illustrates people
and events while tracing the evolving concept of
freedom from the founding of the United States
until 1968. See reproductions of a rare 1776
printing of the Declaration of Independence,
draft and final copy of the US Constitution, Lincoln’s
handwritten notes for speeches and letters written
by visionaries such as Frederick Douglass, Susan B.
Anthony and Martin Luther King Jr.

9/11 Memorial Program
Sunday, September 11, 10:30 a.m.–Noon
Free admission to the 9/11 program.
Retired Naperville Fire Department Captain
Chuck Wehrli will share how he was mobilized
on Sept. 11, 2001 after the terrorist attacks
in New York, with the Missouri-based FEMA
Urban Search and Rescue Team, their 10-day
deployment, recovery activities and their return.
This presentation is a tribute to mark the 15th
anniversary of 9/11. Donations can be made to
National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
The Secret Life of Anne Bonny
Sunday, October 9, 4–5 PM
Held in the Meeting House at
Webster St. & Porter Ave.
Born in 1697, Anne Bonny became the most
notorious female pirate of all
time. Daughter of a well-to-do
family, Anne refused to live the
life assigned to her. Instead,
she found her place among the
real pirates of the Caribbean
and carved out a legacy
that lives to this day. This
exciting presentation by
Treva Rodemaker will bring
you into the exciting world
of real pirate history.

Mudslinging, Muckraking and
Apple Pie: Presidential Campaigns,
the Great American Pastime
Bartholdi and His
Lady of Copper
Sunday, November 6, 4–5 PM
French sculptor, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, wanted
to produce a work of colossal proportions to
express his love of liberty – a statue that would be a
gift from the French people to America. The statue
of Liberty was Bartholdi’s greatest achievement.
This stunning presentation features the illustrations
of award winning Artist/Presenter, Jim Weren.
Learn about the down-and-dirty presidential
campaigns of early America in this entertaining
program, presented by actor and historian
Terry Lynch of HFK Presents. Hear stories of the
mudslinging and muckraking of the Jefferson vs
Adams campaign of 1800, the Jackson vs Adams of
1828, the Lincoln vs Douglas election of 1860, and
Grant vs ANYONE! Also covered is the 1912 election
of Teddy Roosevelt when he decided to start his
own political party.
Mrs. Claus
Wednesday, December 14, 7–8 PM
Everyone has heard about Mr. Santa Claus. He is the
most famous overachiever in the world. But who
is Mrs. Claus? She was first revealed as a character
in a book written by Katherine Lee Bates in 1899.
Mrs. Claus will tell it all: the ups and downs of her
marriage, her (two) identity crises, the dramatic
lives of reindeer and
how she found love,
joy and the spirit of
Christmas with the man
in the red velvet suit.

To celebrate the 150th birthday of Laura Ingalls
Wilder, Laura Keyes will portray the American
writer. Hear the real history of Laura Ingalls Wilder
and discover the times, places and people who
inspired her wonderful books.
Helen Keller – A Life Nearly Lost
Sunday, March 12, 4–5 PM
Helen Keller overcame adversity through the help
of Anne Sullivan, a determined young teacher.
Through Anne’s diligence and perseverance, Helen
would become a world renowned speaker and
advocate for the disabled. Jessica Michna portrays
the blind and deaf Helen being led to the podium
where she recites excerpts from the 1925 speech
Helen gave to the International Lion’s Convention.
The program continues in third person as Michna
tells the audience of Helen’s life and experiences.

away to traditional German music and
classic rock, while enjoying Germanstyle beverages and cuisine under
our huge heated tent, or beautiful

A First-Person Cemetery Walk

History comes alive as you “meet” Naperville
residents from the past in Naperville Cemetery,
each with an interesting story to tell. Tours begin
at 2 p.m. Groups of up to 15 guests will depart
for Naperville Cemetery every 30 minutes for a
walking experience of approximately one hour;
last tour steps off at 3:30 p.m.
Sheep Sunday
$12/adult, $10/senior (62+), $8/youth (4-12),
Naperville residents (with ID) and members are free
Flock to Naper Settlement for a fun day of woolly
activities, including sheepherding demonstrations,
knitting and drop spindle demonstrations, make-ittake-it stations and more.
Railroad Ramble Walking Tour
Go behind the scenes for a glimpse of the stateof-the-art storage facility where we will show you
highlights of our permanent Museum Collection.
The climate-controlled 23,000-square-foot
space is filled with materials that document the
rich history of Naperville from its settlement in
1831 to present day. No food, beverages, bags or
photography allowed. Registration is required and
limited to 30 persons. For ages 13 and up only.
Weed Ladies Winter Show and Sale
Thursday–Saturday, November 10–12, 10 AM–4 PM
Free admission to the sale
Held in the Daniels House
The Weed Ladies Winter Sale features holidaythemed floral arrangements and accessories.
Tour originates at the southwest corner of Burlington
Square Park, 307 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville
Volunteers are needed for Oktoberfest,
All Hallows Eve and Holiday Programs.
Hear about the history and influence of rail service
in Naperville, including the cultural impact of the
railroad on the community. Tour includes about 14
blocks of walking. All ages welcome.

Tour the Martin Mitchell Mansion this holiday
season to see it beautifully decorated in the
Edwardian style of the 1910s. Listed on the
National Register of Historic places, the Mansion
is Naper Settlement’s premier showcase and will
be adorned in holiday splendor with help from
the Naperville Garden Club. A guided tour will be
given of the first story of this historic treasure.

Get in the spirit of the holidays by visiting with
Santa and Mrs. Claus. Enjoy the sugar and spice of
decorating cookies in Mrs. Claus’s Bakery. Prepare
a magical treat to summon Santa’s reindeer in the
Reindeer Food Factory. Craft two ornaments in
Santa’s workshop. Gather around Mrs. Claus for
story time. Don’t forget to leave a letter for Santa
Claus! A limited supply of “magical” reindeer
shoes will be available for purchase, and bring
your camera for photos with Santa!

Camp Naper
Welcome warmer weather and shake off cabin
fever during Naper Settlement’s annual tribute to
the changing of the seasons. See the old-fashioned
method of collecting sap and watch a maple tree
tapping demonstration. Enjoy hands-on activities
and presentations that recount Illinois’ Native
American heritage and pioneer past and try a tasty
maple treat. Many historic buildings will have a
different theme and special activities for families
to enjoy.
