Thank You.
Liquor Policy: We recognize that the Club has a responsibility to provide members and their guests with an environment
conducive to warm, social gatherings, recreation, and camaraderie. As the service of alcohol beverages relates to this activity, we believe our responsibility to maintain a pleasant social environment must also consider the best interest of our members and the community. To assure this responsibility is not breached, the Country Club of Lexington is committed to act
responsibly in the sale of alcohol and the ongoing education of our service staff in matters relating to alcohol. Because of
our commitment, we maintain that it is our right to refuse service to anyone who may jeopardize his or her safety and the
safety of others as a result of alcohol consumption. While we believe that the members of the Country Club of Lexington

the Country Club of Lexington.
4. It is the Club’s policy to maintain an environment for all of our employees free of sexual harassment as outlined in Title

to unlawful sexual harassment are inappropriate in the Club.

The field was split up into 2 flights (7 teams in Flight 1 & 6 teams in Flight 2). The weather started very nice in the morning and turned on the players as they finished in the bitter cold conditions in Satur‐

Luke Boatright & Lane Small captured 1st Place in the 2nd Flight with a score of 70‐76‐146 (a total of 2 over par) for the championship. ‘On The Course’
Once again the year is off to a
chilly start. The past month has
certainly been one of the coldest
that we have experienced in several years. With these cold temperatures, the grass is put under
extreme stress. We are doing our
very best to keep a close eye on
the greens in particular. Desiccation, prolonged cold
temperatures and direct low temperatures damage are
all issues that can have significant effects on ultra-dwarf
greens. While we do everything possible to accommodate play, there are times when it is necessary to close
the course due to extreme conditions. This is only done
when we believe that possible damage could occur
with play. There are many factors that go into this decision and we appreciate your patience and understanding during these frustrating circumstances.
Now on to some brighter news. This past year we
made significant improvements to the driving range tee
and the cart paths. The small front driving range tee
was expanded to increase the hitting space by 25%.
The project was done in-house and should provide a
major improvement to our driving range area. We also
began a cart path improvement project late this Fall.
This includes patching and resurfacing existing paths
and removal of certain cart paths in wooded areas and
other areas deemed nonessential. We were able to improve approximately one-third of the cart paths this
past year. While this is a work in progress, we hope to
continue these improvements for the next few years
and return our cart paths to their original condition.
Our 2014 schedule is very similar to 2013. The
greens will be aerifyed in June and again in August.
Aerification is performed during times where temperatures are conducive to rapid recovery. This is a time
consuming process that includes; aerifying, removal of
plugs, blowing off the remaining debris, rolling, topdressing, dragging and applying fertilizer to promote
recovery and improve the soil conditions. The process
essentially removes organic matter and replaces it with
sand. With numerous benefits, this is the most important cultural practice that we do. The tees will be aerifyed in the spring of the year and the fairways will be

done in May. We try to time these practices to minimize impacts on play, however with our healthy tournament schedule it is often difficult to avoid some
disruption. Thank you for your support of these essential programs.
We will also continue to work on drainage, irrigation and other improvements to the golf course, driving range and landscaping around the club and on
the course. We look forward to having another great
year in 2014. If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to stop by or give me a
call. Thanks again,
Mark Swygert,
CCL Superintendent

also compete in a Drive, Chip, & Putt Challenge on each Thursday. We will also include two Junior Captain’s
Choice Competitions. The Captain’s Choice Competitions will be “fun” events. We will pair the kids up according to their skill levels. Juniors will compete for points and prizes in each of the events.
We will also hold a competition for The Country Club of Lexington Junior Player of the Year. There will be a cumulative point system awarding points for both participation and competitions throughout the summer. In addition,
we will hold the 2nd Annual Country Club of Lexington Junior Clinic Classic during the last week of the program,
with an awards and honors ceremony following play.
Spaces are Limited to the 1st (12) Junior’s to Sign Up in each time slot! Contact a member our professional staff for
more information.
Pee Wee Junior Golf Camp
We will hold a week long Pee Wee Jr. Camp in August of 2014. Juniors will be introduced to the game of golf with a
new golf program (SNAG GOLF –Starting Now at Golf) that we had tremendous success with last year. This program
has taken off nationwide and we are very excited that our juniors are able to use this program. The camp will be open
for Ages 10 & Under. Please be on the lookout for more information in the Summer about our Pee Wee Jr. Camp.
We are looking forward to a GREAT 2014 season!

As your Director of Tennis/Head Tennis Professional I am excited and energized about the upcoming
year. I have made it a point in my professional career to get comfortable being uncomfortable. In other
words, I like to step put of my comfort zone and try new things to avoid stagnation. I have plans for the
courts, activities, teams, and our CCL members. We are on the way to making 2014 a year to remember.
CCL is poised to "make a difference" this year. I believe tennis can contribute to the club and all of its
members by growing the tennis membership, using the main clubhouse for drinks, snacks and events
even more.
I am proud to be the D.O.T. at this point in CCL's history because in 50 years those members are going to
say "Wow, look at what that group was able to accomplish!" as we look back and say now. The club has a
strong talented membership which is evident in the selection of the board year in and year out.
My vision for CCL is to be THE place to be for any of the amenities we offer. There are several projects
that tennis have been getting poised to move forward when the opportunity comes. When things happen it
will be a smooth transition. We embrace challenge because that makes success that much gratifying. The
Country Club of Lexington is a leader in the area and it leads from the from the front of the pack holding a

As I have done in the past,
allow me to take this opportunity to Thank outgoing
Board member Teddy Calcina for his dedicated service and numerous contributions he made to the Club
while serving the past six
years on the Board. Teddy
was the Chairman of the Finance Committee in 2011
and 2012 before turning the
reins over to Chase Colbert last year. He is also a
former Past President of the Club (1998) and has
truly been a very active Board member, giving
freely of his time throughout his most recent two
terms. I hope the membership will join me as I express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for the
time and effort Teddy put forth on behalf of the
Club. While we are truly are sorry to see you go off
the Board, we feel certain you will stay involved with
the club by serving on a committee of your choice.
Thank you again for all you have done!
We also would like to Welcome incoming Board
members Scott Biggerstaff (re-elected – 2nd term),
Jeff Burkett (re-elected – 2nd term), and new comer
Greg Hicks. We are confident you all will continue
to contribute to the betterment of the club just as
your predecessors did previously and look forward
to working with each of you over the next three
years. A “Special Thanks” goes out to all those
members who took the time out of their busy schedules to attend the Annual Meeting on January 14th as
well as those folks who were unable to make the
meeting but still voted in the election. Your support
and involvement with Club business is truly appreciated.
While we are passing out accolades, I do want to
recognize our 2013 President’s Award Winner,
Jerry Wilke. I honestly cannot think of anyone more
deserving of this award this past year than Jerry. He
has spearheaded the Rock Gladden Fund Raising
Outing to benefit CCL since its inception and although several other members have been very involved along the way, he has remained the driving
force behind the success of the event. The funds he
has raised have been utilized to purchase equipment for Mark as well as contribute to the expense
of several capital projects that have enhanced the
facilities here at the club. Congratulations on your
award Jerry and Thank you again for your dedicated

service and numerous contributions you have made
to the Country Club of Lexington.
The “Proposed” 2014 CCL Tournament and
Social Schedule is included in this newsletter.
PLEASE take a close look at both of them and help
us be sure (one last time), that we didn’t accidentally schedule a Club Tournament or Social Event
that conflicts with another event that would adversely affect membership participation. We have
“tweaked” a couple of the events and hope that will
have a positive effect on participation. The Social
Committee will continue to look for ways to generate more interest and better participation for all of
our Club Events but WE NEED YOUR HELP! Although we make every effort to keep our membership as well Informed as possible about Upcoming
Events via the Internet (Web Site and Email Blasts),
Bulletin Board in the Hallway, Signage throughout
the Club and even Signs on the Golf Carts, we still
struggle with the amount of interest / attendance to
some Club functions. So let us know if you have
some thoughts or ideas on this matter and please
consider taking full advantage of your membership by participating in as many of these club
events as you can!
Along these same lines, we strongly encourage
you to keep up with our Hours of Operation for the
Club House, Grill Room, Golf Shop, Golf Carts and
Driving Range which are also posted on the Web
Site, listed in the Newsletter and can be found in
several other locations throughout the Club. We
also Post Notices about the Grill Room / Bar Closing
early for a Special Event as well as those few occasions when the Kitchen closes for regular service
due to a Club Function or other activity. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our
members and Thank You in advance for your understanding and cooperation with this matter. We
promise we will only do this when the size of the
event is too large for the Dining Room area to accommodate the group (which on a positive note,
means the Club is generating some much needed
Banquet Revenue).
While we are on the subject of the Dining and
Grill Room / Kitchen operation, please be sure to
check out Katie’s section of this newsletter. She addresses some of the “issues” we contend with when
we prepare for one of our Holiday Buffets. We are
thrilled that they have become so popular and never
want to turn away business. However, we also want
the event to be a Positive and Enjoyable experience
Continued on page 9
for All our Members which is why we strongly encourage you to familiarize yourself with the various policies for these functions. Like I said, we
love having so many members want to utilize their
club for these Special Occasions and we simply
want them to go as smooth as possible so everyone enjoys their meal and has a great experience.
Last year at this time, I was sort of bragging
about the club getting off to a pretty good start to
the new fiscal year that began in October. Unfortunately, Ole’ Mother Nature has made sure I
won’t be doing the same this year. As we all
know, the weather has been downright awful, especially the last two months. Once it finally
stopped raining what seemed like every day, the
darn Cold Weather rolls on in and we have to deal
with those dreaded Frost Delays and Frozen
Greens. I believe we have had more days the
course been closed or we had very little play due
to the frigid temperatures since I can remember
and the long range forecast isn’t looking much
better. Consequently, rounds of golf are down
which obviously, has an adverse affect on Grill
Room Sales and, Everyone tends to be Very Frustrated they can’t get on their course. I hope you
understand that these “Frosty Days” are probably
more frustrating for the staff than they are for the
members since we would love to get you “out” of
the Shop and on to the course so we don’t have to
answer the “Million Dollar” question so many
times. I assure you we are simply trying to
“Protect” YOUR course and not take any unnecessary risks in January or February that potentially
could do damage to the greens come Spring time.
So please remember, Patience is a Virtue and we
will do our very best to get you out the minute the
course is safe to play.
On a positive note, the cold weather has allowed Mark to do some weed control in a few of
those more challenging areas so hopefully come
Spring time we will have a pretty “clean” course
to play on. It also has permitted him to get caught
up on a few of the winter projects he lined up
back in the fall but then again, it doesn’t have to
be sub freezing conditions every day like it has
been lately to get those jobs done!
Another problem with all this cold weather is
the fact that people don’t typically think about
joining a club when they are not playing golf and
it’s 22 degrees outside. With that said, we actually have had a few inquires about membership in
the last couple weeks which makes me believe
that once the weather turns for the better and the
Continued on next column

course comes out of this deep freeze,
we might be able to get some potential members out there to play and see for themselves what a great facility we have to offer. We
still need your help though so please keep your
eyes open for any Friends, Family members, CoWorkers or a new neighbor that “might” have an
interest in joining a Country Club. Our members
are the best at promoting the club and growing
the membership, so please consider doing what
you can and do not hesitate to call us if we can be
of any assistance along the way. Mary Roof is our
Membership Coordinator and she can be reached
at 359-8838.
Don’t forget about the upcoming events in
February. Golf wise, we have the Super Bowl
Tournament on the 2nd and a new event, the 4
Man Tough Day Texas Scramble on the 22nd.
Social wise, the Valentine’s Day Dinner is on
Friday, the 14th so make your reservations now!
Then in March, the Three Man Scramble will be
on Saturday, the 15th. We’d love to have a couple
full fields for the golf events and sell-out crowds
for the social activities, so please make note of the
dates and plan on joining in on all the fun!
In closing, although we are off to a slow start in
2014, I am confident it is going to be a great year
for the Club. I promise you, the entire Staff is
committed to making your country club experience the best it can be and provide our members
with a golf course that you can be Proud of and
lives up to the expectations that come with being
the SCGA CLUB OF THE YEAR! We will continue to look for ways to make things even better
and greatly appreciate your patience and cooperation as we “massage” various policies and programs in an effort to improve the overall operation for the enjoyment of our members. Your
comments / input are always welcome and we
hope to see each and every one of you out at the
club on a regular basis. Have a Happy Valentine’s Day and a Very Special St. Patrick’s Day!

CCL Superintendent’s
This includes patching and resurfacing existing paths
and removal of certain cart paths in wooded areas and

call. Thanks again,
