A Message from
the President and CEO
Evangelical Community Hospital continues to beat the odds as a nonprofit, independent, communitybased healthcare facility. As small healthcare providers in the state and nation continue to find it
difficult to enhance patient quality and satisfaction, maintain profitability, and increase volumes,
Evangelical is doing just that.
As I look back over fiscal year 2012, I am grateful for the incredible work of the Hospital’s physicians,
caregivers, employees, and volunteers. The Hospital has once again exceeded state and national
benchmarks for patient care, quality, and clinical outcomes; it has reached out beyond its walls to
partner with local service providers, such as Bucknell University, Geisinger Medical Center, and
Middleburg’s Reliance Ambulance Company, to offer new collaborative programs or enhanced services.
Evangelical’s bond rating of BBB+ with a stable outlook was also reaffirmed by Standard and Poors. Our
continued profitability allows us to reinvest in our patient care programs, employees, facilities, and
community outreach.
In the following report, you will read about capital improvements such as the Donehower-Eisenhauer
Pavilion, which provides new space for surgical and cardiovascular care to residents of surrounding
communities. Several new acquisitions such as Selinsgrove Imaging Center, Central Susquehanna
Surgical Specialists, PC, and Family Medical Care, PC, both in Lewisburg, provide expanded services
and enhanced convenience for our patients.
Advanced care continues to be an important part of the Evangelical tradition. The Hospital’s new
e-Health initiative provides round-the-clock access to health information for a patient or provider. The
new eICU provides extended care to our sickest patients by connecting them virtually to Geisinger’s
critical care physicians.
Finally, physician recruitment continues to be a primary focus for Evangelical Community Hospital.
Through a new physician recruiter and enhanced marketing efforts, the Hospital has acquired 38 new
physicians over the last year. They include physicians specializing in internal medicine, pulmonology,
rheumatology, family medicine, surgery, and hospitalist care.
Looking ahead, the Hospital has a full slate of projects and initiatives to enhance the care provided to
our patients and outreach to the community. Improvements to our physical plant will support a Center
for Orthopaedics and a renovated Family Place; a new inpatient electronic health record will provide
enhanced and more efficient documentation; and the new No One Dies Alone (NODA) program offers
care to inpatients who are alone and at the end of life.
Continued support from the community contributes to our excellent financial position
and sets us on a course for long-term sustainability and independence.
Thank you for your support as patients, advocates, and donors to Evangelical
Community Hospital.
Sincerely,
Michael N. O’Keefe
President and CEO

“If we are not moving forward, we are moving backward.
We cannot stand still.” Those words stand out boldly at the center
of the timeline wall in the new Donehower-Eisenhauer Pavilion.
Attributed to Michael O’Keefe, President and CEO, they capture the
essence of how a community hospital can not only survive, but
thrive in today’s healthcare environment.
The opening of the Donehower-Eisenhauer Pavilion exemplifies
what it means to be in the forefront of community-based
healthcare. For patients, the addition brings enhanced services
by means of exceptionally trained and skilled physicians and
staff, advanced equipment and technology, as well as improved
accessibility to lifesaving procedures without having to travel
great distances for quality care. >>>

“From registration to discharge, every part of having
my surgery at Evan was exceptional. I felt confident,
comfortable, and knew just what to expect thanks
to the care of Dr. Stefan and the nursing staff. The
pain in my legs is gone, and in no time I was back
to enjoying my favorite activities.”
–Rodney Rhone of Catawissa, Carotid Endarterectomy
What’s Inside
Found in only the most progressive
hospitals, the new surgical suite features
a hybrid operating room. The hybrid OR’s
innovative design allows specialists to
perform traditional surgeries, complex
vascular procedures, and minimally invasive
surgeries in the same space. The result is a
collaboration of care, which reduces surgical
time, puts less stress on the patient’s body,
and promotes quicker recovery time with
less risk of complication. The hybrid OR also
features advanced medical imaging devices,
including a ceiling-mounted X-ray machine
that travels on rails around the patient,
from head to toe, and instantaneously
displays real-time images on a monitor.
Seven additional operating rooms join
the hybrid OR, delivering spacious, fullyequipped spaces for use by Evangelical’s
skilled surgeons. Slim-line scopes with tiny
cameras require only small incisions and
can “see” inside a patient by displaying
images on a large screen for surgeons to
view. A smaller incision helps a patient
get back to work or to his or her normal
routine faster with a shorter healing time.
Though the surgeries are more minimal
in nature, the attention from experienced
surgeons and qualified nursing staff is at
the maximum level for comfort and safety.
3
All cardiovascular services are now housed on the first floor of the
new addition rather than in separate areas of the Hospital. The
catheterization suite features two procedure rooms equipped with the
latest in diagnostic and interventional technology, revealing details
about a patient’s condition for physicians to assess treatment options.
The suite also includes seven procedure care beds, echocardiography
services, and the Hospital’s renowned cardiac rehabilitation program.
Not Standing Still
For fiscal year 2013, the momentum continues with plans
to open a new Center for Orthopaedics. Building on the
philosophy and success of Evangelical’s Joint Replacement
Center and SUN Orthopaedic Group’s 34-year history as bone
and joint specialists, the new Center will care for patients
receiving and recovering from a wide range of orthopaedic
procedures, from spine surgery to total joint replacements. 

Together –
Teamwork
Saves a Life
Sending a child off to college is a memorable
part of a family’s journey, but for one family,
what will be remembered is a miracle of modern
medicine. As John Barnett moved his youngest
daughter, Taylor, into her dorm room at Bucknell
University, the Houston, Texas, native experienced
a heart attack due to a 100 percent
blockage of his left coronary artery.
For John, his memory of the day is blank,
but for his family, first responders,
and staff at Evangelical Community
Hospital, the day will call to mind many
people working together taking vital
steps to get his heart working again.
“
I am so thankful to everyone
involved in giving me a
second chance at life.”
John and Taylor had driven 24 hours over two days.
The stress of his job was weighing on his mind, and
he wasn’t eating or drinking much on the trip.
After moving Taylor’s things to her fourth-floor dorm room, John
suddenly felt weak and couldn’t get cool, so he took comfort in the air
conditioning of his truck. Taylor became alarmed when she couldn’t
get him to answer his cell phone. She found him collapsed and started
CPR. Someone called 911; Evangelical and other emergency personnel
were on their way and the Hospital was ready for his arrival.
John arrived at Evangelical’s Emergency Department with no
heartbeat. Emergency services staff and Dr. Bradley Moyer took
over for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics,
working on John for 30 minutes before they could detect a
weak heartbeat. They stabilized him and he was transported
by LifeFlight to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
“This is one of those one-in-a-million cases where the patient
fully recovers,” Moyer said. “When someone is clinically dead for
that length of time, you can, at best, be hopeful. Still, we never
gave up, and we helped him breathe until we found a pulse.”
–John Barnett
It was indeed those early decisions and actions
that made a recovery for John possible.
Quick intervention by everyone and the
application of ice and cooling blankets were
key. Though he has permanent heart damage
and will probably be on medication for the
rest of his life, his prognosis is good.
John has dropped 25 pounds since his heart
attack, changed to a heart-healthy diet, and tries
to exercise three to four days a week. Today he
is working, has no neurological deficits, and has
completed heart tests at his local hospital with no
problems. His Houston cardiologist is amazed.
Returning to Lewisburg nine months later to
pick up Taylor and watch his older son graduate,
John visited the Hospital to meet the people
who saved his life, saying with laughter and
tears, “I am so thankful to everyone involved
in giving me a second chance at life. Thank
you for not giving up, for giving it your all.
What you did made my recovery possible.” 

bench strength –
New Physician Recruits
Add to Winning Team

Evangelical Community Hospital is proud of its exceptional
reputation for patient-centered care and its 250 physicians,
who help maintain such high standards of excellence. The
Hospital also recognizes the importance of recruiting
new doctors with expertise and training that
further enhance the quality of care for patients.
“We have to recruit physicians to stay competitive,”
said Andrew Gibbons, Associate Vice President of
Primary and Specialty Care. “Just as a strong sports
team is built of talented players,” he said, “more
physicians give a hospital ‘bench strength.’”
The 38 physicians added to Evangelical’s medical staff in fiscal
year 2012 certainly increase the Hospital’s bench strength and
provide patients with more options.

want to know their patients have access to
such advanced services when needed.
Along with the Hospital’s state-of-the-art facilities
and the support of clinical specialists, Evangelical
offers new physicians a family-friendly community
and the trust and support of that community.
“As a quality physician, you can really make a
difference here in caring for people and furthering
your career,” said Dennis D. Burns, Manager of
Physician Recruitment. “And physicians coming in
can see that.”
In his recruitment efforts, Gibbons sees how people outside the
area perceive Evangelical. “I hear people say we are more in tune
with the patients—more one-on-one,” said Gibbons.
From successful fundraising campaigns to a healthy force
of volunteers, concrete evidence of community support and
involvement are at every turn. “We talk a lot with recruits about
the reputation we enjoy in the community,” he said.
That reputation guided Dr. Ross Ellison’s choice. The Danville
native graduated from Thomas Jefferson University in
Philadelphia and began working in Evangelical’s Emergency
Department in July.
He was swayed by the number of local people he noticed staying
in the area and working in the Hospital and its “extremely
friendly” attitude. But it was Evangelical’s reputation that
clinched his decision.
“When I was talking with friends who had graduated from
residency and were working in the area,” he said, “I only heard
positive comments about Evan.”
In the end, that reputation is the Hospital’s greatest recruiting
tool—a reputation of trust and a focus on patient care that draw
doctors and patients alike. 

Cookin’ Men
Turns Up
the Heat on
Breast Cancer
Awareness
Cookin’ Men is a new event designed to raise awareness
about breast cancer and encourage support for the Hospital’s
Thyra M. Humphreys Center for Breast Health. The event was
held in conjunction with Paint the Valley Pink, a breast cancer
awareness crusade of Evangelical Community Hospital and
Sunbury Broadcasting Corporation.
Cookin’ Men brought 15 brave men to
the table as celebrity chefs, creating
signature dishes like handmade spring
rolls, seared ahi tuna or duck breast, and
warm apple crisp that could be sampled
by ticket holders.
Cookin’
MEN
As the 260 guests sampled culinary delights to the tunes of a local
band and talked with the men behind the aprons, the atmosphere
was light but the cause was tremendous. All around were reminders
that breast cancer can affect mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends.
It was no accident that men were chosen to cook for the evening,
because although the disease most commonly attacks the bodies of
women, it takes a toll on the men who love them as well.

Evangelical’s Thyra M. Humphreys Center for Breast Health offers
innovative and compassionate care for patients and their families.
The Center provides a full spectrum of clinical and support services,
from screening and diagnosis to treatment and counseling.
Campaign exceeds goal — three times!
At the end of the campaign, more than $800,000 was
raised for endowments, which support long-term program
costs and community needs. Examples of endowments at
Evangelical Community Hospital include the Charles P.
Fasano Memorial Lecture Fund, the Mae Keefer Nursing
Scholarship Fund, the Michael Daniloff Endowment for
Hospice, and the W. Gale Reish, MD, Fund for Community
Health Education.
Cookin’ Men is just one of the ways community members
support the Hospital. Evangelical has been fortunate
to have the consistent backing of its neighbors and
friends throughout Union, Northumberland, Snyder, and
Lycoming counties and the surrounding areas.
Evan & You
Under the leadership of Campaign Chair
Roger Haddon, December 2011 brought to
conclusion the Evan & You campaign that
began in 2008. Exceeding its goals three
times over a four-year period, the final
$18-million effort supported the new
Donehower-Eisenhauer Pavilion, the
Evangelical Care Fund (also known as
the Annual Fund), and the Endowment.

portion of the Hospital’s operating costs, which helps keep
healthcare affordable for Valley residents.

During the campaign, a total of $6 million was
secured through state grants that provide for
new construction and equipment, including
installation of the biomass boiler that
supports the new addition and more.
All of the efforts in fiscal year 2012 had one
thing in common—community members,
local businesses, foundations, board members,
employees, and volunteers giving of themselves
with time or money to keep the Hospital in the forefront
of quality healthcare. Whether attending an event or
supporting it financially, each effort comes together to
create a strong foundation that will sustain the Hospital
for decades to come. 

careful planning
creates patient comfort
Below Left: Renovated Rooke Pavilion
Below Right: Volunteers William Spade and Lois Jones
Evangelical Community Hospital is known for the
exceptional care it provides to patients, but along with
quality care comes an understanding that the
facility itself must be attuned to patient comfort.
Recent Hospital renovations address that in a
variety of discreet and thoughtful ways.
An example of planning with the patient in mind,
the design of the new Donehower-Eisenhauer
Pavilion focuses on convenience and accessibility.
The new addition has one entrance and a clearly
marked path that steers patients to key locations such as
Imaging Services Registration and Central Registration.
“We think about the patient’s viewpoint in all we do,” said
Kendra Aucker, Vice President/Chief Operating Officer.
9
With a unified, professional look,
Evangelical’s newly renovated hallways
support the Hospital’s mission of
providing advanced healthcare in a
safe and comfortable environment.
Great care was also given to helping
patients navigate the Hospital.
Navigational experts were hired to find
their way through the building, then
suggest ways to make it more userfriendly. Signs on walls and ceilings are
obvious solutions, but subtle touches
such as bright lighting and tiled floors
were also added to steer visitors in
the right direction. Intersections
where navigation decisions must be
made are painted blue, making it easy
for staff members to direct patients
and visitors to their destinations.
Renovations to One-Day Surgery
involved more than installing new
flooring, fixtures, lighting, and furniture.
Consideration was also given to mobility
issues, right down to larger room layouts
and higher seats in restroom facilities.
friends, and creating a physical therapy gym. In addition,
support space for the new Center for Orthopaedics and
consultation rooms for doctors and family members will
be constructed.
Renovations will also start on The Family Place,
Evangelical’s Obstetrics Department. To maintain
the Hospital’s expected level of comfort and care,
the decision was made to renovate as seamlessly
as a baby grows. In fact, it will be completed in 10
separate phases and span two fiscal years so only
a small number of rooms are affected at a time.
“Obstetrics is very important to us,” Aucker
said. “It is time to match our facilities with
our quality patient care record.”
Patients will be delighted with the fresh look of new
furniture, flooring, paint, and built-in wardrobes
and cabinets, as well as new birthing beds and
bassinets. Ever mindful of our tiniest patients and
their families, the air-handling system will be
updated and the IT room expanded to accommodate
a new nurse call system, ensuring that patients
and their loved ones feel comfortable and secure
as they begin their first moments as a family. 
“It’s part of our overall enhancing of
the patient experience,” Aucker said.
“Patients get top-notch clinical care here.
They also need to feel comfortable in
their accommodations.”
With patient comfort in mind, some
departments that do not provide direct
patient care, like Centralized Scheduling,
have been relocated to other buildings
on the Hospital campus. This frees up
space in the building for care-related
services, making it easier for patients to
have all their needs attended to in the
main Hospital building. Second-floor
renovations will continue next fiscal
year, transforming vacated operating
rooms into locker rooms and office
space for staff, expanding surgical
waiting rooms for patients’ families and

“e” nnovations
Evangelical Community Hospital’s commitment to
providing the best quality healthcare to the
community was extended in fiscal year 2012 with
a complete redesign of the Hospital’s website,
making it easier for visitors and patients to
navigate the site, access educational articles,
communicate with medical practitioners,
and manage personal health information.
The website overhaul began with a thorough search engine
optimization review. More than 300 pages of text were re-tooled,
re-positioned, and re-written to produce more frequent and higher
ranked responses to keyword searches on services like Google.
11
Industry studies reveal Internet users choose from the first few
links displayed in a keyword search. With that in mind, keywords
were selected to position Evangelical at the top of the list when
searching for services offered.
The new evanhospital.com features user-friendly navigation to
help visitors find information quickly and easily. New search fields
on the site’s home page account for varying terminology—such as
“heart” and “cardiovascular”—ensuring that patients and visitors
can find the medical information they need without the frustration
of multiple search efforts. Navigational improvements are best
reflected in the bounce rate, the percentage of visitors who arrive at
a website and leave without viewing any additional information. A
healthy website will reflect a bounce rate of 30 percent or lower.
The new site offers visitors pertinent and targeted content. Short
videos have been added to improve visitor engagement and
encourage interactivity. New tools link classes, programs, and
screenings with relevant pages on the site. The end result is a site
that attracts traffic and efficiently funnels visitors to relevant
information.
Post-launch Progress
• The Hospital doubled its #1 ranking on Google. It now holds the
top spot in some 14 keyword searches, including “physicians
Lewisburg,” “weight-loss surgery Lewisburg,” and “hip replacement
surgery Lewisburg.”
• Evangelical’s bounce rate fell by more than 10 percent, from just over
40 percent to around 30 percent.
Every page of the new website
features a direct link to E-Health,
Evangelical Community
Hospital’s patient portal, giving
patients the power to connect
with their healthcare providers
and manage their health
anytime, anywhere.
With the click of the mouse,
patients can:
•Update contact information
•View personal health
record and outcomes
from physician visits
•Submit requests for nonemergency physician
appointments
•Update insurance information
•Access online physician services
•Download forms
•Request prescription refills
• Visitors from inside the Hospital’s primary, secondary, and tertiary
service areas are up more than 6 percent.
• Pages per visit are up approximately 25 percent.
Social and on the Go
The website reconstruction effort included the development of a mobile version
of the full site and a re-tooling of the Hospital’s Facebook presence.
Designed specifically to display on smartphones and tablets, the new mobile site provides
fast, convenient access to the Hospital’s key services, including cardiovascular care, joint
replacement surgery, women’s health, and surgical services. The mobile version also features
easy-to-navigate tabs that help visitors find a physician and an Evangelical location.
Engaging posts, using more images, and integrating content from the Hospital website have sparked
a new energy on Facebook. “Likes” have increased to nearly 1,200, and event-based photo albums
are reaching hundreds more while encouraging comments and driving conversations. 

Strengthening already existing programs and services is at the
heart of how Evangelical positions itself as a leader in providing
healthcare to the community. Over the past year, Evangelical
acquired Selinsgrove Imaging Center, Central Susquehanna Surgical
Specialists, PC, and Family Medical Care, PC, enhancing convenient
access to patient care and imaging services.
Selinsgrove Imaging Center
In order to effectively diagnose and treat a majority of
conditions, physicians and surgeons need to know
what’s going on inside the body. Images generated
by today’s advanced technology provide a clear
picture for physicians and surgeons. Every area of
the Hospital’s Imaging Services—from ultrasound
to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—has earned
full accreditation, and that level of quality care is now
available closer to home for Snyder County residents.
In early 2012, Evangelical completed renovations at Old Trail
Imaging, 21 Susquehanna Valley Mall Drive, and reopened it as
Selinsgrove Imaging Center. The comprehensive center offers a
variety of imaging services including CT scan, MRI, ultrasound,
echocardiogram, and digital X-ray, all in one location that is more
convenient for patients in Selinsgrove and the surrounding area.

The acquisition of Central Susquehanna
Surgical Specialists, PC, and the opening
of the Donehower-Eisenhauer Pavilion in
July 2012 marries expertise with advanced
technology. Expert surgeons have stateof-the-art equipment to perform a variety
of surgeries less invasively, reducing
recovery times and getting patients back
to their normal activities more quickly.
Family Medical Care, PC
Family Medical Care, PC, Lewisburg, joined
the Hospital’s roster of physician offices in
September 2011. Bringing this primary care
office into the fold of Evangelical Medical
Services Organization (EMSO) adds another
convenient location where patients can find
quality care. The practice includes Douglas

medical information officer. In this capacity, Dr. Spotts has
been instrumental in guiding the implementation of the
Electronic Medical Records initiative, which delivers instant
access to patient information when and where the physicians
need it—at the Hospital, in their offices, or while on call.
Dr. Kerber is no stranger to the area; she received her medical
degree from Temple University School of Medicine and
completed her family medicine residency in Williamsport.
Through strategic planning and in response to the
needs of the community, Evangelical Community
Hospital continues to connect the healthcare dots,
bringing patients and their families the choices
they need to realize a full continuum of care. 

Experience
Volunteers
For Steve and Marie Burish of Sunbury,
volunteering at Evangelical Community
Hospital is being part of Evangelical’s
caregiver team. This might be greeting
patients and visitors at the Information
Desk, transporting blood samples to the
lab, or delivering flowers, food trays, and
newspapers to patients.
Steve and Marie, who say they do everything
together, volunteer two days each week, from
8 am to 3 pm. But when it’s busy, they gladly
stay later.
19
“We never thought we’d come to a point in our life, and this is the truth,
when we would plan our week around these two days of volunteering
here,” Steve said. “It’s pleasurable. When you walk in the door to this
place, not only do volunteers have compassion, all the people who work
here have compassion.”
Compassion matters to the Burishes because in an inner city hospital
where Marie’s mother was treated, they saw caregivers who were too
rushed for kindness and caring. Perhaps that experience makes them
more attuned to the needs of others. When Steve volunteers at the Pain
Clinic, he delivers drinks or snacks to patients and escorts them to their
car. “Anything to make their stay here more comfortable,” he said. When
he saw a woman in pain fighting back tears, he sat and chatted with her
for a while, taking her mind off her discomfort.
Pat Murray, Director of Volunteer Services, oversees more than 600
volunteers—35 to 40 each day—ranging in age from 14 through 96. She
interviews all volunteers to assess their skills and talents and motivates
them by telling the Evangelical story.
“I place the volunteers where they have an interest or skill,” she said,
“because they’re giving a valuable gift—their time.” Volunteers like
the Burishes feel this is time well spent. Though they’ve only been at
Evangelical a year, they have been impressed by the number of long-term
volunteers. “That takes a special individual,” Steve said. “We hope to be
that caliber of individual.” 

Experience
Living & Leaving
a Legacy
It was the early 1950s. Daniel Green, a
Hospital board member and local bank
Mr. Donehower’s retelling of the story of dedication day is much like
listening to an oral history of the Hospital.
“The nurses marched over on Route 15 like a military group,” he said,
explaining that they wore all white, their capes from nursing school, and
their white caps. “In those days, what you wore was a sign of who you were
and where you belonged. The cap was an important part of the uniform.”
The ceremony was attended by several community leaders, including
Mr. Green, Attorney Merrill Linn, W.J. Busser, Dr. John Arbogast Sr.,
Dr. Charles Tomlinson, and Dr. Amos Persing, many whose names and
faces line the annals of Evangelical’s history. How fitting it was, then,
that a young Bob Donehower stood among them.
president, approached Bob Donehower
and asked him to play an important role
as a volunteer fundraiser for Evangelical
Community Hospital. Mr. Donehower,
a young entrepreneur, along with
Bucknellian Howard Kieft, went
door-to-door in Lewisburg’s Ward 1
to raise money for a new facility along
Route 15. So began Mr. Donehower’s
lifelong friendship with the Hospital.
“We didn’t raise much—one dollar, five dollars,
occasionally 15 or 20 dollars,” Mr. Donehower
said, but the volunteer opportunity allowed
him to be part of an important community
endeavor. It also earned him an invitation to the
dedication of Evangelical Community Hospital.
On a more recent day, a hot evening this June, Mr. Donehower stood on
the same site among a different crowd. The group gathered to honor
him and his late sister-in-law, Ethel Eisenhauer, RN, the Hospital’s first
supervisor of surgical services. The ceremony marked the dedication
of the Hospital’s newest addition, the Donehower-Eisenhauer Pavilion,
which recognizes a joint gift made by Mr. Donehower and Ms.
Eisenhauer and their lifelong commitment to the Hospital.
“We grew up here, the Donehowers and Eisenhauers,” he said,
explaining his affinity for the Hospital.
Ever humble, Mr. Donehower noted that he is grateful for the
opportunity to add to Ms. Eisenhauer’s gift in creating a prominent
legacy for each family. He’s careful to make it clear that when he gives
and speaks, he does so not for himself but to represent donors who
make great things happen at the Hospital.
About his own philanthropy, he is very matter-of-fact, adding, “I just
want to leave something for the people to enjoy and appreciate.” 

In 1995, the Board of Directors established The Legacy Circle for friends who have
included the Hospital in their estate plans or made other planned gifts such as a gift
annuity or charitable trust. The Legacy Circle is a way for Evangelical to express its
gratitude now to those who have made future provisions for the Hospital.

2012 Gala
The annual Evangelical Gala raises funds to support
important programs and services that enable
A more recent addition is the Crystal Snyder Nursing
Scholarship, a fund established in 2008 to honor the memory
of the Sunbury area nurse through a gift from the Degenstein
Foundation. The scholarship primarily supports students from
the Shikellamy School District. Both scholarships benefit local
students who have been accepted to an accredited program
to pursue licensure as registered professional nurses.
The Gala is the Hospital’s signature event. It has evolved over
the past 40 years, from the Snow Ball of the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s
to the Starlight Ball of 2002 to 2005 to the Evan Gala as we know
it today. Something that has not changed is the remarkable
support of this event and the Hospital from the community.
Evangelical Community Hospital to better serve the
Susquehanna Valley and surrounding communities.
This formal affair features dinner, dancing, and live
music in the elegant Larison Hall at Bucknell University.
The theme of this year’s event was “Supporting
Tomorrow’s Nurses.” Attended by nearly 300 people,
the Gala raised more than $90,000 to provide for
nursing scholarships.
Since 1989, Evangelical Community Hospital has awarded
more than 266 nursing scholarships thanks in part
to generous contributions from the community and
fundraising events such as the annual Evangelical Gala. The
Hospital awards nursing scholarships through two different
funds each year. The Mae Keefer Nursing Scholarship Fund
was established to honor the late Mae F. Keefer, RN, upon
her retirement as Director of Nursing in 1988.
“The evening was such an incredible success,” said Tami
Radecke, Vice President-Community Relations for Evangelical
Community Hospital. “This year’s total is the best in the history
of the event. We owe a great deal to our incredible volunteers,
sponsors, and attendees who support the Gala every year.”
Aside from enjoying an evening of dinner and dancing, guests
were there to give. The event featured both live and silent auctions
of items ranging from tropical vacations to fine jewelry—all
generously donated by community sponsors and supporters.
Proceeds from the auctions alone totaled nearly $25,000. This
year, guests also had the option to “text-to-give,” a new initiative
using the latest technology to help donors contribute. During the
event, guests were encouraged to get out their phones and send a
text message to give a gift in support of nursing scholarships.
The Gala benefits a different Hospital program each year.
Recent beneficiaries of the Gala fundraiser include the
Thyra M. Humphreys Center for Breast Health, Community
Health Education programs, and Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Fiscal Stewardship
Evangelical Community Hospital continued to build
on its 86-year tradition of financial excellence despite
a sluggish economy, decreasing reimbursements,
and uncertain healthcare reforms.
Steady, consistent growth marked the trend for fiscal year 2012.
The Hospital’s net operating margin increased a full percentage
point, ending at 8.7 percent, while net patient revenue grew by more
than $9 million. Hospital volumes increased during the year with
outpatient procedures growing by 4 percent, operating room visits
moving up 3.4 percent, Emergency Department visits increasing by
3 percent, and Laboratory Services seeing an increase of 2.4 percent.
A series of acquisitions supported the growth in volumes
and revenue. During fiscal year 2012, Evangelical acquired
Central Susquehanna Surgical Services, PC, a practice
consisting of eight board-certified surgeons. The Hospital
renovated Old Trail Imaging and reopened the facility as
Selinsgrove Imaging Center and welcomed Family Medical
Care, PC, Lewisburg, to its group of family practice clinics.
The increase in Emergency Department visits was supported
by a strategic effort to move Pre-Hospital Services into the
Middleburg area.
At the close of the fiscal year, the Hospital opened the new
Donehower-Eisenhauer Pavilion, a 42,000-square-foot addition
housing surgical and cardiovascular suites. The new suites
provide expanded capacity, allowing for continued growth
in the Hospital’s surgical and cardiovascular volumes.
Expanded capacity and corresponding volume increases,
continued investment in advanced technology, and a sustained
focus on promoting a positive patient experience have the
Hospital poised for yet another successful fiscal year.
