Success: Implementing the “12 Days of Fitness” to encourage active brain breaks
during the month of December for all students from K-9
Main resource: Apple School’s monthly health campaigns
Challenges: Morning routines in classrooms from K-9 vary widely so the “morning
announcement” structure as suggested by our resource would prove disruptive for
some. We also wanted to create some buzz around the project and increase
enthusiasm for the project. This way, students would encourage (bug) their teachers
to allow them to participate if they were less inclined to be on board.
Solution: Having our SWAT team assist us in creating videos with a different staff
member featured each day allowed teachers to use the videos in their classrooms as
they saw fit. Many teachers told us that they would do the videos several times daily
as energizers. Also, each day ‘teasers’ about the next exercise or mystery staff member
were posed to the students to create more interest.

Woodhaven Connects!!!
During our school year each grade level participates in three activities where
they either give back to the school, community, or on a global scale. Throughout
the year students, plan, organize, and execute their grade level projects.
After students have completed their Connects Activities they are given a chance
to share their contributions to the school community during an assemble. Here
is an example of a Connects Presentation created by the grade nines.
Grade Nine Connects
S.W.A.T.
Student Wellness Action Team!
At Woodhaven we have a 6/7 and 8/9 SWAT option class. These two classes are
designed to continually maintain and create a healthy school environment for
all. These are some examples of what the SWAT students organize and are
responsible for:
- school wide activity days (examples: fall fair/ Scarecrow Building
Competition)
- reading buddies to the students at Brookwood
- assist the Health Team with school wide events, such as the Terry Fox Run
and Meet the Teacher Night
- school wide recycling
Health Days
At Woodhaven we teach our Health Curriculum through various “Health Days” throughout the school
year. During these Health Days students are exposed to a variety of topics through interactive lessons,
guest speakers and specialists.
Topics that are covered throughout the school year include: Mental Health, Career Day, Substance
Abuse, Sexual Education, and Physical Wellness.
This year we have taken our Health Days one step further by incorporating student led workshops on a
variety of topics that deal with mental wellness and substance abuse. We are excited to see how the
students respond to being a part of student led conversations and lessons.

S.W.A.T. (Student Wellness Action Team)
The team is made up of grade 4, 5 and 6 students (grade 7 and 8 have leadership
option). The philosophy behind S.W.A.T. is that it is students who are promoting
healthy eating, active living and positive social environments in the school, with the
help and guidance of teachers. This is the 3rd year Coloniale has had S.W.A.T. and
the number of students who participate grows every year; as well, as parent support.
In the past year, S.W.A.T. has been added to the monthly School Council, Staff
meeting and assembly agendas. With the support of School Council, S.W.A.T. was
able to purchase team t-shirts, that make the group recognizable at events, as well as
sponsor an Apple Challenge. S.W.A.T. is also working with the C.A.P. (community
attachment purpose) mentors and School Counselor to provide additional support.
