An Early Lent…
Father Tim will be returning from vacation
late Thursday and he has asked me to write
this column. Since I work with the RCIA and
Lent is a special time for us, I thought I
would share my reflection for this holy time
of the year.
• Area Activities ............. Page 4
An early Lent can pose challenges for all of us. Remnants of the
Christmas season are still with us. How many of our homes still have
poinsettia plants in full bloom? How can we think about Lenten
practices when we’re still working on our New Year resolutions? But I
believe God always has a plan for us and this year He doesn’t want us
to curl up by the fireplace these cold days and nights! Instead God is
inviting us to join Jesus in the desert and experience the power and
mystery of Lent that leads to personal conversion.
• Mass Schedule ............. Page 5
The Church teaches that “Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter.”

ST. BEDE THE VENERABLE
February 7, 2016
continued from page 1
It is a time of intense preparation for those involved in the RCIA as they get ready for full initiation into the
Church at the Easter Vigil. These candidates and catechumens are reminders to us of our own baptisms and
the call we have all been given to be holy people.
Lent is a time for all of us to embrace who we are, shed our extra baggage, and truly reach out in love and
forgiveness to all those whom we are blessed to encounter. And how do we accomplish this?
We are fortunate that Father Tim and the Staff have started making plans for Lent 2016 which begins with
Ash Wednesday, February 10th. There are opportunities for both personal and family spiritual growth. Here
are some items from our “Lenten menu:”
Ash Wednesday Mass
9:00 AM and 7:00 PM
12:10 – Liturgy of Word
Stations of Cross
7:30 PM Fridays
Individual Activities:
Retreat Days
Men’s – March 5
Women’s – March 12
Communal Penance
Wednesday, March 16, 7:00 PM
Family Activities:
Pierogi Dinner
Friday, February 26
Scouts Pancake Breakfast
Sunday, April 3
K of C Pasta Dinner
Saturday, April 16
So we have the challenge. Make Lent 2016 a Lent to remember. After all, an early Lent means an early Easter.
Karen J. Roman
Pastoral Associate
Ash Wednesday, a day of fast
and abstinence, is February 10th.
Mass will be at 9:00 AM and
7:00 PM. There is a Liturgy of
the Word at 12:10 PM. Ashes
will be imposed at all three
services.
Our Lenten Vespers Service will
be next Sunday, February 14th at
5:00 PM in the Chapel. Please
consider making this half hour of
song and prayer a part of your
preparation for the Easter Season.
Vespers is the Evening Prayer of
the Church and is one of the most
ancient Offices known. It has been in existence
under various names and forms since at least the
fourth century. Vespers is a very tranquil unhurried
service that can provide us a good way to take time
out from all the busyness of daily life, and instead,
focus on the preparatory season of Lent.
Fasting
Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday by all Catholics who have completed their
18th year and have not yet reached their 60th year.
Those bound by this rule may take only one full
meal. Two smaller meals are allowed with no eating
between meals.
Abstinence
Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday
and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics who have
completed their 14th year.
Widows, Widowers and Senior Singles will meet
for Brunch on Saturday, February 13th at 11:00 AM
in the Youth Ministry Room. Please bring a dish to
share.
Memorial plaques have come in from the
manufacturer. If you ordered a plaque, please look
for yours on the pillars facing the shrine area behind
the altar.

St. Bede, St. John Vianney,
and St. Mary of the
Assumption.
The Social Justice Committee’s mission is to be the hands
and feet of Jesus in serving the needs of the most
vulnerable and voiceless in our society. We strive to
inform, educate, make aware and empower parishioners
and the wider community in the Catholic social teachings.
In past years, we’ve collected for Project Hope for the
Homeless, held Fair Trade Sales, and hosted events on
human trafficking and addiction awareness. Meetings are
held on the 4th Tuesday of each month. We would love to
add new members and welcome everyone who wants to
make a difference in the lives of others in our community.

FEBRUARY 7, 2016
2016 First Step Program: One of the significant
issues that a person faces after a divorce is their
place in the Church. Does the Church still care about
me even though I am divorced? Am I allowed to go
to Mass? Can I receive communion? How can the
Church help me heal? If I decide to marry again,
what do I have to do?
The Tribunal of the Diocese of Cleveland, especially
during this Jubilee Year of Mercy, offers its First
Step Program in order to help individuals deal with
these questions in order to renew and/or strengthen
their relationship with God and the Church.
Using webinar technology, several parishes have
been designated to host the First Step Program.
Locally, the program will begin at 7:00 PM on
Wednesday, February 17th at St. Gabriel Parish
(9925 Johnnycake Ridge Rd., Concord) in the parish
school. Trained personnel will be there to facilitate
the session. There is no need to preregister.
Everyone is welcome to:
 Deepen knowledge of the Church’s teaching on
marriage…
 Learn about the Church’s ministry to the
divorced/separated in the Diocese…
 Hear about the annulment process and how to
submit a case…
 Discover a path to healing after divorce in order
to strengthen and/or renew a relationship with
God and the Church.
Note that the Diocese of Cleveland no longer requires
any fees for this process. For more information check
out the website www.dioceseofcleveland.org/tribunal
or call the Tribunal at 216-696-6525 or 800-869-6525,
ext. 4000.
