In 2011, Camp Sunshine’s 29th anniversary, we
asked former campers who are now camp
counselors to reflect on this statement: “Because
of Camp...” We received wonderfully inspiring
responses and share several in this Annual Report.
Camp Sunshine means many things to many
people — love, support, fun, acceptance. A common
thread is the invaluable connectedness that
Camp Sunshine’s year-round programs provide.
Childhood cancer can leave a family feeling alone
and isolated; Camp Sunshine can help families gain
strength and hope. Connectedness is empowering
and priceless.

CONNECTEDNESS TOOK MANY FORMS IN 2011. We provided 140 programs over 157 days,
steadfastly connecting with our campers and families. We introduced 189 new families to
the warming rays of Camp Sunshine and served 6,564 individuals in all. We expanded our
statewide, regional programs and our in-hospital programs, reaching even more campers
and families. Using social media and other technologies, we stepped up our communications
with Camp Sunshine’s entire circle of friends.
WE COMPLETED THE FIRST FULL YEAR OF OUR LONG-RANGE MASTER PLAN IN 2011,

INCLUDING CREATING AN ADVISORY BOARD TO KEEP US PURPOSEFULLY CONNECTED
TO OUR MISSION AND VALUES. The year brought the staff addition of our first development
director, Mary Kyle, to fortify our connectedness to donors and the philanthropic community.
Alliance is another word for connection; in 2011, we teamed up with the Alliance Theatre for the
truly wonderful “Wizard of Oz” benefit performance, which took place in February of this year.
WE ARE PROUD OF OUR CONNECTEDNESS AND TAKE OUR RELATIONSHIPS SERIOUSLY.
In 2011, the first year of the Gold Ribbon Camp designation from Children’s Oncology Camping
Association International, Camp Sunshine was one of only 17 camps in the United States
and Canada to earn it. Our Board of Directors demonstrates extraordinary connection to
our mission and programs, with 100 percent contributing a financial gift to Camp Sunshine.
The generous giving of our many donors, the awesome dedication of 1,149 volunteers and
the enormous commitment of our staff keep the Camp Sunshine connection strong.
We are deeply grateful to each and every one.
