The cycle of poverty is broken. The appearance and value of the community is improved. Money is spent locally on materials. Volunteers gain valuable experience and learn new skills. Benefits to Families Studies have shown that families who become homeowners have: Increased involvement in their neighborhood Increased civic engagement Increased academic performance in schools by school aged children Increased family stability and cohesiveness Benefits to the Environment We use SIP construction– panels of wood and insulation that are glued and then pressed together. They are very heavy, but make it possible to heat the home with very little energy All our homes are 5 stars Energy Star rated. To be energy star rated, a home must be 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC), and include additional energy-saving features A New Beginning Habitat for Humanity of Missoula partnered with the Missoula Fire Department to help prepare our build site for construction in 2013/2014. When Habitat purchased the land at 1625 S. 7th Street West, there was an inhabitable structure on the lot that needed to be removed before Habitat could begin building. The Missoula Fire Department was able to use the structure for a few weeks training Firefighters and running drills. Then on March 27th the Fire Department completely burned down the structure. After cleaning up the debris, Site Supervisor Mike Sehorn and Habitat’s volunteer crew leaders have completed construction of a 3-bedroom home for the Mittlestadt Family. Thank you to Matt Kerns, Training Officer, and the entire Missoula Fire Department for all of their assistance with the project. Construction on an additional home at this same site began in 2014. Middlestadt Family Home Dedication—2013 How do you squeeze a hundred people into 1,100 square feet? It’s not hard when everyone is there to celebrate the completion of a Habitat house, and help dedicate the home with good wishes and blessings. This year, we worked with the Mittlestadt family; Kyle, Kim, Taylor and Hunter. This summer the Missoula community came out and raised their hammers to help. By our calculations, over 350 Missoulians and a few out of town-ers donated well over 5,000 hours to bring the Mittlestadt home to reality. Earlier in the afternoon on the day of the Dedication Ceremony, many volunteers stopped by to see how the project turned out, and show off the work they themselves had done. Neighbors stopped by bringing house warming gifts and curious folks from the community took a peak to see just what a Habitat house looks like. A Habitat House is Energy Star rated and typically uses at least 50% less energy than a standard code built home. A Habitat house has built in Visit-Ability features: one entry with no steps, wider hallways and wider interior doorways. A Habitat house is built to fit into the neighborhood and creates community and camaraderie. A Habitat house is well built and crafted with not just skill, but artistry and loving care. A Habitat house makes the dream of home ownership a reality. “It's a beautiful house and we are so thankful. The kids are excited to have their own rooms and we're so excited. Kyle and I, for as long as we can remember, it's been a dream of ours to have a house for our kids and it's a dream come true honestly," Kim Mittlestadt said. Habitat Volunteers Creating affordable housing and affordable home ownership is a community effort. When we work together to help people be successful homeowners, we create thriving communities because homes and families are the foundation of vibrant communities. We want to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to all who respond to the need for affordable home ownership by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Missoula. Over 500 volunteers donated more than 7200 hours in FY2014 to Habitat for Humanity of Missoula projects.
